President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday paid glowing tributes to men and women of the nation’s Armed Forces for their courage and sacrifices in the war against insurgency in parts of the country. He spoke while launching the emblem and appeal fund for the 2015 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Jonathan restated the Federal Government’s commitment to the welfare of military veterans and families of the nation’s fallen heroes. “We salute and appreciate the courage and sacrifices of men and women of our armed forces in grappling with the wave of terrorism in some parts of our dear country. “They have displayed unalloyed loyalty and commitment to Nigeria. In their demanding task to keep Nigeria one and united, some of our gallant officers and men have lost their lives. “To these officers and men we pay tribute and pray fervently for the repose of their souls.” The president called on all Nigerians to identify with the Armed Forces by procuring and wearing the emblem with pride as well as donating generously to the appeal fund. He took responsibility for the yet-to-be-redeemed financial pledges made by individuals and corporate bodies to the fund during the 2014 celebration. Jonathan said that his office was to blame for not contacting those who made the pledges, and directed his Chief of Staff to compile their names with a view to reaching out to them. “After this emblem launch, I encourage all Nigerians to procure and wear the emblems with pride throughout the remembrance period, that is from today till Jan. 15 next year. “This will symbolise our appreciation for the sacrifices of our fallen heroes and veterans and also assure those in service that their fatherland will never forsake them and will continue to remember them. “Last year I instructed that all should identify with our armed forces, and this year is no exception. “I, personally, will put on the emblem from today till Jan. 15, and in the State House it is a tradition that for you to come in from tomorrow, you must wear the emblem.” The president said that as part of efforts to improve the welfare of ex-service men, the government recently implemented an increment in military. He noted with delight that the Military Pension Scheme was now running efficiently. Jonathan said that the Minister of Defence had been directed to initiate programmes that would improve the living standard of veterans in the country. He commended the Nigeria Legion for introducing the Nigerian Legion Humanitarian Day as part of activities marking the Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration. He said the legion was using the event to reach out to the society through social works, humanitarian activities as well as empowering women and dependants of the nation’s fallen heroes. He also lauded the efforts of state governors who are patrons of the Legion in their various, and urged them to continue to lend their support to the veterans. Earlier, the National Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Col. Micah Gayya (rtd), said that out of the N105 million pledged last year, only N30 million had been redeemed. He said the pledges were made in public, leaving the legion with no avenue to tell the world that they had not been redeemed. While calling on all those concerned to redeem their pledges, Gayya urged Nigerians pledge amounts they could redeem. On his part, the Minister of Defence, Lt. Gen. Aliyu Gusau (rtd), attributed the continued unity and corporate existence of the country to the patriotism and sacrifices of the Armed Forces. Gusau also lauded the commitment of the military to the fight against insurgency in the north eastern part of the country and urged Nigerians to continue to support their efforts. Jonathan; former Head of the National Interim Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan, were decorated with the emblems. - Source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/12/youve-done-well-proud-jonatan-tells-armed-forces/#sthash.gZ2D6XQM.dpuf

General Muhammadu Buhari has said it is possible he picks a Muslim running mate if his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) agrees. Speaking on a Channels Television interview on Sunday night, Buhari, one of the strong contenders for the presidential ticket on the platform of APC, noted that the country had produced same religion leaders in the past. Recalling that former head of state, General Yakubu Gowon and his service chiefs were Christians and the late MKO Abiola and Babagana Kingibe ticket in 1993 and even his team with Idiagbon, he said nobody complained. “Gowon filled his government with Christians, Buhari/Idiagbon were Muslims, Nigerians voted Muslims with Abiola, maybe time has changed now,” he stressed. On the forthcoming APC presidential primaries, Buhari said “if the processes are done freely and fairly, I will accept the result if I don’t win.” Describing the Federal Government’s fight against terror as “unsatisfactory,” he added that the insecurity gripping the nation was intolerable. •8,000 APC delegates arrive in Lagos for national convention NO fewer than 8,000 delegates drawn from across the country will gather in Lagos, on Wednesday, to pick the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate for the 2015 election, with the delegates expected to arrive on Tuesday and commence immediate registration. The exercise is billed for December 10 and 11, 2014 and will hold at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere. The APC presidential aspirants are: former head of state, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari; former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwanso (Kano), Governor Rochas Owelle Okorocha and the publisher of Leadership newspapers, Mr Nda-Isa. National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, disclosed this in Lagos, on Sunday, while addressing newsmen. He reiterated that the APC was poised to bring the desired change to Nigeria from the sorry state it was currently and to enable her to take her rightful position in the comity of nations. He assured that the APC was committed to ensuring this change by presenting for election, credible and purpose-driven candidates that would drive the change at various levels of government. Mohammed, who said that the party was going for "a convention and not coronation" to pick its presidential candidate from among the five that lined up for the race, enjoined Nigerians to join hands in realising the desired change. This is just as he said the party's national convention was brought to Lagos after careful and thorough consideration by the convention committee headed by former Governor Kayode Fayemi. According to him, Lagos was finally picked from among others, including Kano, Benin, Port Harcourt, Owerri, Jos, because it was favoured in terms of accessibility, accommodation for no fewer than 8,000 delegates and finally, security. Text of the statement reads: "As you are all aware, our dear country is in a dire need of change. The All Progressives Congress (APC) is determined to bring that change. The process of effecting that change has commenced with the effective mobilisation of Nigerians to demand the change in the 2015 general election. "The APC as a party that is committed to seeing Nigeria leave its present sorry state and take its rightful position in the comity of nations, is set to ensure this change by presenting for election, credible and purpose-driven candidates that would drive the change at various levels of government. "The party’s congresses and election of candidates for the various positions that commenced earlier in the month will climax in the election of the APC presidential standard- bearer in the February 2015 presidential election. "The national convention of the party is scheduled to hold at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere , Lagos between December 10 and 11, 2014. "No fewer than 8,000 delegates drawn from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are expected to participate in the convention and the presidential primaries that would elect the party’s standard-bearer out of the five presidential aspirants of the party. "The five aspirants of the party are eminent citizens with proven credentials. It is our belief that, at the exercise, one of them would emerge the presidential standard-bearer of our dear party in the coming election. "The aspirants include: a former head of state, General Mohammadu Buhari; a former Vice President of the country, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar; Governor of Kano State; Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso; Governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha and Publisher of Leadership Newspaper Group, Sam Nda-Isaiah.The five aspirants would address the delegates, stressing their programmes before the commencement of voting, which will be by secret ballot. "Adequate arrangements have been made by the National Convention Committee (NCC), headed by former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi for a hitch-free convention. The various sub-committees are working round the clock to ensure that the convention succeeds and become a reference point in the political history of the country. "We are also collaborating with relevant agencies to ensure effective security, crowd control, traffic management, medical attention among others. "And for the millions of Nigerians who may not be opportune to be at the venue of the convention, arrangements have been made for effective live coverage of the entire process by some radio and TV stations." President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday lambasted the Kano State Governor, Musa Kwankwaso, saying he is a political “gambler” who is hallucinating about becoming Nigeria’s president. Mr. Jonathan, who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ruben Abati, was responding to criticisms by Mr. Kwankwaso that the president lacked the capacity to serve as commander in-chief of Nigeria’s Armed Forces. The governor, who is a presidential aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, had during his campaign fund launch in Abuja on Saturday made scathing remarks about the Presidency. He urged APC faithful and Nigerians to vote for the right person to replace Mr. Jonathan, who he accused of failing to secure the lives and property of the citizenry. But responding, Mr. Jonathan said the Kano State governor is an incompetent and clueless presidential aspirant. “The point must be made very clearly that the kind of comment Governor Kwankwaso made at an occasion where he was doing a fund raiser for his gamble to become the presidential candidate of the APC shows that he is a very incompetent and a clues presidential aspirant,” said Mr. Abati. “One would have expected that at an occasion where he was raising funds to promote his gamble to become the presidential flag bearer of the APC, he would project himself as a man who has a vision and an agenda for moving Nigeria forward. “Instead, what he has done at every turn in this his new found gamble and hallucinatory ambition to become the president of Nigeria is to rundown President Jonathan at every opportunity.” The president noted that Mr. Kwankwaso is one aspirant who believes that by pulling him down, the governor can rise. Mr. Jonathan drew attention to how Mr. Kwankwaso poured invectives on the presidency when he declared for the presidential ticket of the APC and again at the campaign fund raising, saying the actions were unfortunate. The president continued, “I think it is a tragicomedy because at every point he goes into this his gamble to become a presidential candidate of the APC, the only thing he does is complain about President Jonathan, instead of using the opportunity to talk about what he wants to do for Nigerians. “It is obvious that he is clueless and an incompetent presidential aspirant and is not in a position to talk about incompetence. He is even the one that is incompetent and that is masked gross paranoia. He is complaining that President Jonathan is not doing enough to check insurgency and we are inviting countries that we have helped before to come and help us.” Mr. Abati explained that the Federal Government did not reach out to its neighbours in the fight against insurgency out of desperation. Rather, as a global threat, he said the only way to tackle terrorism is for countries to work together and exchange intelligence. He, therefore, described Mr. Kwankwaso’s diatribe as counterproductive and unreasonable, saying any aspirant playing politics with insurgency lacked the basic understanding of the complexity of the problem. “Any intelligent aspirant will see very clearly that insurgency affects all of us and what is required is for all Nigerians to walk together. Governor Kwankwaso wants to be the president of Nigeria in his dreams,” Mr. Jonathan said. “He doesn’t understand the nature of our security challenge and I think it is most unfortunate that a person of such low level of understanding can seek the office of the president.” On the claim that some top PDP members will soon defect to the APC, Mr. Jonathan said the Kano State governor is trapped in a drivel and should not be taken seriously. While confirming his status as the sole presidential candidate of the PDP, having been endorsed by party members at all levels, Mr. Jonathan expressed confidence that he will emerge not only at the party’s convention, but also during the 2015 polls. At the time he would again emerge as president, Mr. Abati noted that the garrulous APC aspirant will be nowhere to be found given the way he has so confidently and arrogantly advertised his ignorance. “His ambition at every point ends up as a tragicomedy and the clearest illustration of the tragicomic nature is to gamble in lies. Mr. Kwankwaso doesn’t even understand what insurgency is all about or what terrorism is all about. “He makes it seems as if the terrorism in Nigeria is a fault of Mr. Jonathan and everything must be heaped on his head,” the president said.
