Leftrightcenter: If I may add to what others have already written, I think you would need to work on your funding. For example, you graduated in 2016, it is expected that the deficit should be funded majorly (if not solely) by you instead of your dad. You should also state how much your earn and how much of the deficit you will cover. More so, the correlation between your intended course in your masters degree program, your BSc and your current work do not seem to align very well. It would have been good to focus you graduate program on pharmaceutical science or any other field that is much closer to that instead of biology. In summary, just as the last VO that interviewed you pointed out, you need to change something in either your deficit, course or school,... Alright, thank you |

BabaIbo: Using my own understanding, I think your shortcomings is not trying to have your own life/business/field outside your dad's own.
Ok, look at it this way.
VO: What have you done since then? You: I started my own pharmaceutical company, which main business deals majorly in supplying small(optional) medicine stores in the rural areas with the help of me and my sales team, why my manager handles my physical store while I am on supply duty. Again, having seen the way I handle my own business, my dad gave me a temporary employment to oversee the hospitality section of his business portfolio as a 1st level manager or 2nd level manager or line manager(just find any role that suits that position which you can work temporarily or remotely).
If he ask while you are traveling to us, you may want to say "to help you in your journey of starting your own production line(Pharmaceutical company) since you already have the sales area covered and available market. Extra: because you feel your people don't have adequate access to medication blah blah blah.
Depending on the vo, the answer may show you as someone who won't Japa but come back to his or her country once they are done with their study, that is they may believe you have every reason to come back to Nigeria since you have a growing business and a very promising plan.
Well, that is just my opinion on what you posted here. Thank you! |

GboyegaD: As to what has changed, you could talk about your retrospection and how you realized you were not eloquent enough in passing across the information which you believe was the reason you were denied. Thank you very much! |

Najdorf: Exactly. There is no need to defend the sponsor so aggressively in this case. He should keep it short and simple just as you said, and allow the VO ask him questions that will give him the chance to defend his home ties. That's where the effort needs to be and not in defending an 8k deficit.
Honestly, thet should have gotten in that their second attempt...Everything about their profile is good but it's clear that the first interview highly influenced the verdict of the second Alright, well noted. |

Observer25: Yep agree. Full funding with 8k deficit is a slam dunk case to me. His whole delivery wasn't succinct. Keep it simple and short. My dad will cover the deficit. I also have some savings. You spent most part of the conversation defending how your dad can come up with 8k. And you were all over the place..about being a principal investigator then later how you will manage your dad's pharmacy. Two combo roles with a masters? Keep it simple please Alright, thank you. I'll work on it |

GboyegaD: In my opinion everything looks good except that you may want to be answer strictly the questions you are asked without providing too much of details except you are nudged to continue.
Also, link the study to your past education, current job, and the prospects it offers you in the future in an eloquent and sequential manner.
For example, I chose this course because it builds on my foundation of Pharmacology where I did my undergraduate research in ABC. The APSU Biology avails me the opportunity to specialize in drug ***** which is an area that I can greatly contribute to the success of my dad's pharmaceutical business which I intend to take charge of upon returning from my studies.
Most importantly, pray and let God guide you. Thank you very much. Any ideas on how I'll answer the "what has changed" question? |

Hello everyone, I got denied twice at the Lagos embassy and I have another interview coming up on October 17 at the Abuja embassy. Please advice me on what I need to do better this time and also how to respond to the "what has changed" question. I am going to the same school for the same course.
First Attempt:
Lagos Embassy: 18/08/2023 while he collected my passport and i20 he asked
VO: where are you going Me: I am going to Austin peay state university Clarksville Tennessee for my master's degree in biology.
VO: Who is funding? Me: I have a graduate research assistantship position which covers 100percent of my tuition. And my dad will be covering the deficit. He is an established business, the CEO of Bleep a 3star hotel with branches in Lagos and Ogun state. He has a staff strength of 80employees and makes an annual income of over 100million naira. He has made arrangements for a standing order to have $3000 travelled to my domiciliary account monthly for a period of 4months and this will cover my deficit. Asides this having worked for half a decade I have being able to save up for this career goal.
at this point he took my i20 and started looking at it while I talked
VO: where did you do your undergraduate? (Now looking at me for the first time) Me: I finished from the college of medicine university of Lagos, where I studied pharmacology in 2016.
vO: do you have any friend or relative in the US? No I don't
Vo: have you traveled out of Nigeria before? Me: No, I have not had any reason to until now
Vo: what do you do? (Looked at me to ask the question but focused on the system - browsing with his mouse - while I gave the answer) Me: I am a senior research associate at Bleep where I enhance public health and wellbeing through active participation in community and school based educational initiatives. I also work with professors and doctors to carry out community based research
Vo: Cuts me that's fine, how are you covering your deficit (still looking at the system, this time typing as well - at this point I felt he wasn't interested in this question as he was focused on the system) Me: like I said earlier asides my gra position which covers 100% of my tuition, my dad will be covering my deficit, he is the CEO of Nijis palace (repeated what I said before)
Types for a long while, then the sorry response.
Second Attempt: Lagos Embassy: 21/09/2023
At first I was directed to the same vo, I told the cgi but he said let the vo say that by himself.
Then at the begining of the interview I was already asked how I am funding the program. He stopped and called the cgi that he should direct me elsewhere and I was place with the vo beside.
Vo: Pass your passport and i20 Me: Good morning Vo: Good morning. Scanned my finger print again.
Vo: I see you are going APSU for masters in Biology. Me: yes
Vo:You have a graduate assistantship and deficit of about...$8000, so who's covering your deficit. Me: having worked for half a decade I will be covering my deficit that's my living expenses and also with the support of my dad. He is a recently retired branch manager of first bank with over 30years in service. He is also the CEO of Bleep a firm that operates in agricultural pharmaceutical and hospitality sectors. He manages two hotels and has pharmacies in various locations in Lagos. He is also a major supplier of palm oil to south western states in Nigeria generating over a 100million naira.
Vo; what's your highest qualification Me: bachelors of science in pharmacology from the college of medicine university of Lagos in 2016
Vo: and the what year did you graduate Me: 2016
Vo; what have you done since then Me; worked as a scientific officer at raw materials development council in abuja for my nysc and worked in my dad's pharmacy for 3years before securing a position as a research associate at Bleep where I work till date. . Vo; so why a master's at this time Me; the second phase of the current grant research project by my employer on drug drug interactions will require molecular processes and technical skill set. This degree will equip me with this knowledge and also improve my research and technical skill set. Also having a master's qualifies me for a higher position as a principal investigator (I paused) where I will lead and conduct meaningful research (that's fine by gesticulating with his hands)
Vo: typing Me; I would also like to mention that my dad's company, Bleep will be opening a pharmacy branch and I will be overseeing the establishment.
Vo: you where here earlier this year Me: yes Vo; you have the same school, same course and deficit, (already trying to put my i20 back into passport) Me: Yes, Vo: so nothing has changed. Me: my deficit changed its 2000 dollars less Vo: how did it happen? Me; having deferred to spring, my coa lessened. And my GA covers my full tuition and also comes to with monthly stipends.
VO: I'm sorry you are not qualified.
I will appreciate your feedback on the above transcripts. |
