A pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God who was kidnapped 10 months ago escaped from Boko Haram militants in Borno on Tuesday Pastor Rotimi Obajimi, who served as a pastor in the rural area of Borno/Yobe province, was on his to Maiduguri on January 6th this year when Boko Haram militants abducted him. According to a pastor in Redeem church in Maiduguri told SaharaReporters that they were surprised to see Mr. Obajimi emerge from nowhere, he said, “we were so amazed to see him because we have been praying earnestly for long time trusting Jesus that he would surely come back but lo and behold he was brought to our headquarters in Maiduguri by the military.” The pastor told his colleagues that was taken to Sambisa Forest where he was tied down for months, he was later moved to an unknown destination and thereafter brought back to Sambisa forest again. He reportedly told his colleagues that his escape was made possible by a heavy downpour that led to massive floods which sacked everyone in the camps. Due to the rains, armed men left him and others so he was able to escape and for days he wandered in the forest before he could arrive to a village where the military picked him up after narrating his experiences to them, they later brought him to Maiduguri. He was later driven to Maimallari Hospital by military escorts, who had his face covered. Another pastor revealed that the senior military official at 7 Division has advised them to relocate the pastor to Redemption Camp in Lagos for his safety, in fact, adequate provision has been made to fly him out of Maiduguri according to the pastor. A military source at 7 Division confirmed the escape of Pastor Obajimi claiming that he has been fully debriefed by the military. source: saharareporters.com/2014/10/09/redeem-pastor-escapes-boko-haram-after-10-months-captivity

The Bundesliga outfit have decided to part company with the 43-year-old and turn to the man who led Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2012 Schalke have confirmed the dismissal of Jens Keller as coach and the appointment of Roberto Di Matteo as his successor with immediate effect. Keller's position had come under intense scrutiny after a poor start to the 2014-15 season in which they fell at the first hurdle in the DFB- Pokal, to Dynamo Dresden, but a Champions League draw away to Chelsea lifted spirits in Gelsenkirchen and back-to-back wins over Werder Bremen and rivals Borussia Dortmund eased the pressure on the 43-year-old. However, after a disappointing draw at home to Maribor last week and defeat at Hoffenheim on Saturday, Keller met with sporting director Horst Heldt on Monday and was relieved of his duties. Schalke then announced the following morning that Di Matteo, who led Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2012, had been installed as the club's new coach. "Schalke have parted company with Jens Keller," read a brief statement on the club's official Twitter feed. "Roberto Di Matteo takes over." Keller initially joined Schalke as the club's Under-17 coach but took charge of the senior squad in December 2012, succeeding Huub Stevens at the helm. He was given a contract until the end of the season but signed a two-year extension in the summer of 2013. However, Keller has now paid the price for a run of just two wins from 10 games in all competitions at the start of the current campaign. Consequently, Schalke have now turned to Di Matteo, who has been without a full-time job since being sacked by Chelsea in November 2012. The Italian led the Blues to Champions League glory in his then capacity as caretaker coach the season before, with the Premier League outfit overcoming Barcelona in the semi-finals before beating Bayern Munich on penalties in the decider at the Allianz Arena. However, after being given the job on a permanent basis before the start of the 2012-13 season, he was fired after Chelsea's defence of their European crown was effectively ended by a 3-0 loss to Juventus in Turin.

Rivers State Governor and Chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has urged Rivers people to vote out the PDP-led federal government in next year’s election to secure their future. Amaechi spoke at the weekend in Degema, the headquarters of Degema Local Government Area of the state after commissioning an 8,000-sitting capacity football stadium complex built by the local government administration. Amaechi said the PDP have nothing to offer Kalabari people, and one way for the people to regain their lost oil wells and benefit from democratic governance was to vote out the PDP. Amaechi explained that the President was taking sides in the Soku oil wells matter, as he narrated the president's reaction during a meeting with Kalabari Chiefs. “In that meeting, before Kalabari Chiefs, Mr. President said to us, ‘you people call it Soku, we from Bayelsa call it Oluasiri’. ‘Is Soku Oluasiri?', he questioned and the people said ‘no’. “As President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he is not supposed to take sides. The moment he said it is called Oluasiri, he is taking sides and we have no faith in Mr. President returning our oil wells. They have taken the (Soku) oil wells, they are spending the money because they have the Presidency. "The only way you can get back your oil wells is to vote out Mr. President. The only opportunity you have now is your vote. Vote him out, he is not from Rivers, he is from Bayelsa. He has not and will not serve us and I have said here, let Mr. President tell us what he has done for us," Amaechi said. He noted with regret that his efforts to build Trans-Kalabari road in the state and reconstruct the Emohua-Abonnema federal road already in deplorable condition was frustrated by President Jonathan. He therefore called on the people to fight for their rights by using their voting strength to correct all anomalies by voting out the ruling PDP. “When I was coming here (to Degema), I saw the Emohua-Abonnema road, it’s going bad. When I met the President with Kalabari Chiefs and I told the President: ‘that road is going very bad, if we don’t intervene now, that road will soon be impassable. Mr. President, that road is a federal road’, and he said, he knows. And I then asked: ‘Mr. President, can the Rivers State Government reconstruct that road? Because that is the only road by which Kalabari people come out to town’ but Mr. President said no." "He told me ‘no' and said he (federal government) would do it. One year plus, he has not done it. So what you will do to make sure you have a road next year is to vote out PDP. If Mr President says he is our brother, because I hear Kalabari people say he is our brother, let him do our road, let him return our Soku oil wells." “I begged him (President Jonathan) that the federal government is owing Rivers State N105 billion, he should take N50 billion from there and help me construct Trans-Kalabari road, he said, 'Amaechi, I will do it’. Three years after, Mr. President has not done it, so he is not a Kalabari man. Don’t follow your buccaneer brothers, who want to be governor and all that and because of their personal selfish interests, they want to sell the Kalabari Kingdom. You are the youths, defend your kingdom. Nobody should take away what belongs to you. The Kalabari people are known to fight for their right. They are people who can stand up to any challenge to protect themselves and their people. One way to defend your kingdom is to vote out those who don’t have your interest at heart," he noted. On the commissioned project, Governor Amaechi commended Degema Council Chairman, Hon. Ibigoni Daddy Pokima for constructing the state- of-the-art Sports Complex named after late Rt. Hon. Tonye Harry, immediate past Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly. Earlier, the Degema Council boss, Hon. Pokima said history was made in the local government area by the visit of the governor. He said his administration has concentrated on providing democratic dividends to the people of the local government area and thanked Governor Amaechi for his immense support. “Your Excellency, I feel a sense of fulfillment to say that Bakana, Oguruama, Amatamgbolo and Fuche communities have been hooked up to the national grid. Then we thought of coming back to our first dream – engaging and channelling the energy of our youths into meaningful venture other than in restiveness and militancy, hence the vision to build this sports complex." “As a government, we are gratified that the vision we conceived about three years ago has come to solid fruition. I believe this complex will provide a serene and conducive atmosphere for our people especially our youths to develop and exhibit their sporting prowess," he said. After the commissioning, Governor Amaechi took a shot at goal to kick-off the peace tournament between Team Rivers and Team Degema. saharareporters.com/2014/10/05/jonathan-has-not-done-anything-you-vote-out-pdp-amaechi-tells-rivers-people

Directing their anger at both the state and national leaders of the party, the protestors said they were aggrieved that their party immediately welcomed Governor Mimiko without probing his role in the deaths of some party leaders in the state. “I can’t imagine that these leaders of our party would allow Mimiko into our fold again. He is just an Ebola Virus that would further destroy us. If [former Governor Olusegun] Agagu were alive, would [Mimiko} have decamped today?” an angry member asked. S ome members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State today gathered at the party’s secretariat, along Oyemekun Road in Akure, the state capital, to protest the defection of embattled Governor Olusegun Mimiko back to the party. The protesters, who came from 18 local government areas of the state, chanted songs and castigated the PDP’s state executive officials for welcoming the governor back to the party. An original member of the PDP, Mr. Mimiko in 2006 abandoned the party after accusing it of lacking “internal democracy.” He then announced that he was joining the then relatively unknown Labor Party. Two days ago, Mr. Mimiko capped off months of speculation about his likely return to the PDP, announcing his decision to return to the PDP at a meeting in State House, Abuja. But his much-publicized return has left some members of the party in Ondo State disaffected. Some of the aggrieved party protesters described the governor’s return as an “infection,” comparing it to the “Ebola virus disease.” According to the protesters, Mr. Mimiko’s defection to the PDP would further deepen the crisis that was already besetting the party in the state since the governor’s plan to defect became public. The PDP protesters said they would resist any attempt to collapse the structure of the party with the governor’s, adding that they would not allow Mr. Mimiko to hijack the leadership of their party. Many protesters jeered at members of the party’s state executive as they entered the secretariat, accusing the officials of absolving a traitorous Mimiko. Some of the protesters said they were angered that the leadership of the party in Abuja had not consulted them before welcoming Mr. Mimiko. Another protester said, “We don’t want him because I don’t know why someone who called himself a governor would go to Abuja and declare his defection. It is uncommon and we must resist it.” In a move aimed at calming the protestors, the state deputy chairman of the party, Fatai Adams, said the party was not ready to collapse the structures to accommodate Governor Mimiko. Mr. Adams said that, although the party officially received the governor into its fold in Abuja, it would not agree for him to hijack the structure. “The [members of the] State Working Committee have met in Abuja and resolved that there is need for us to protect the structure of the party at the state, local government and the ward levels. He added: “We have filed a motion of injunction at the Federal Capital Territory High Court to protect the structure of the party because we are not ready to dismantle the structure of the party at this very crucial moment. “Our primaries are less than a month and a lot of aspirants have shown intention to contest for various positions under this umbrella. We are fully prepared to protect the interests of all members who have worked assiduously and committed a lot of resources.” The state deputy chairman continued: “We are not ready to surrender the structure of our great party to anybody. We were elected. saharareporters.com/2014/10/03/ondo-pdp-members-protest-mimiko’s-defection

T he National Industrial Court sitting in Akure, the Ondo State capital, has ordered the immediate reinstatement of 15 of the 32 workers of the state-owned Rufus Giwa Polytechnic Owo (RUGIPO), who were illegally sacked in January 2013. In addition, the court also directed the institution to arrange for the immediate payment of all their outstanding salaries and allowances that it has withheld since the 2nd of January last year when they were relieved of their jobs. On the 31st of December 2012, the institution, through a circular pasted at its administrative building, ordered the security guards on the main entrance of the school not to allow the 32 workers into the premises of the institution. They comprised 10 academic and 22 non- academic staff. The circular claimed that their services were no longer needed because the management had met with the key principal heads of the institution and carried out reorganization. A SaharaReporters correspondent who obtained the letter on the 14th of January 2013 authoritatively reports that no offence was stated in the circular. Some of the workers during the struggle to reclaimtheir jobs had alleged that the institution had victimized them based on their rejection of the appointment of the rector of the institution, Prof. Igbekele Ajibebun. On three consecutive cases, the presiding judge had postponed the case, declaring that some sections of the suit lacked merit, but the affected employees did not relent, and justice came their way on Tuesday. In his ruling, Justice Ndidi Ubaka admitted that the institution had wrongly sacked the polytechnic workers, and that it failed to tender substantive reasons for their sack. Justice Ubaka said that the court could only return 15of the workers to their positions because they proved to the court with documents that they were real senior staff members of the institution. Of the remaining 17, the judge said they were not reinstated because they could not prove to the court with their employment letters if they were junior or senior staff of the school. The workers' reinstated by the court today are: Mr. Oluwabamiji Kumuyi, the institution's former chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP), Ogunbode Benson, Abodunrin Moses, AdeoniOlusegun, Agbi Nelson, Arijeniwa Adedotun, Ayodeji Akinsanmi and Mrs. V.O Ayodele. Others are: S.B Bolaji, Ekundayo Gbenga, A.M Elegbede, T.L Olemija, Olugbamila Omotayo, OmotolaAlaba Olumayowa and S.O Oniyelu. The non-reinstated workers are as follows: AkinyemiOluwafemi, Taiwo Alonge Titus, Arealepo Michael Oluwasola, A.E Adebayo, Aderigbe Olamide Olajope, Ajanaku James Akinyemi, Akinrolabu Dare Raphael. Others are: T.M Ogunleye, A.O Olayode, J.A Oluyede, Omoge Edward Taiwo, Omole Olayinka, Idowu, J.K Omole and Shoyege Ayodeji Olayinka, Arolowo Clement Jimoh, A. a press statement released today, Deputy Director of Public Relations for the Department of State Services, Marilyn Ogar, reacted on behalf of the department to the judgement of the Federal High Court given yesterday, which ruled in favor of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai in a case against the SSS. The case, which Rl-Rufai brought against the SSS following his detainment last November during the Anambra gubernatiorial election. Delivering judgment in Awka, Justice Ibrahim Bature Gafai held that the SSS had no statutory powers under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria or under any Nigerian law to have detained El Rufai without showing cause to a court of competent jurisdiction. The court therefore ordered the SSS to publish an apology in two national dailies for the unlawful and unconstitutional violation of his liberty. The SSS was also ordered to pay El-Rufai N2 million in damages for unlawfully detaining him last November during the Anambra gubernatorial election. In a statement today, Ogar asserted that some facts were "overlooked", and stated that El-Rufai was not detained for more than two hours, and that the detainment was urgent and necessary. "The Instrument setting up the Service and the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended gives the Service statutory powers to detain and investigate any suspect for not more than 48 hours before recourse to a Court of Law," Ogar said. "In this instance, the complainant was not confined or 'detained' for more than two hours. If we cannot intercept, detain and investigate, then we would, with due respect, be operating like any Ministry of the Federal Government." Read the full statement below. PRESS STATEMENT The Department of State Services has reacted to the judgment of the Federal High Court sitting in Awka asking the Service to apologize and pay N2million to Mallam Nasir el-Rufai saying that some facts may have been inadvertently overlooked and will therefore appeal the judgment. "As a responsive Service, we hold the Judiciary and its sanctity in high esteem, but when you disagree with certain pronouncements of Court, you have the right to appeal and in this case, we will appeal", Service spokesperson, Marilyn Ogar said when asked to comment on the judgment. "The Instrument setting up the Service and the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended gives the Service statutory powers to detain and investigate any suspect for not more than 48 hours before recourse to a Court of Law. In this instance, the complainant was not confined or 'detained' for more than two hours. If we cannot intercept, detain and investigate, then we would, with due respect, be operating like any Ministry of the Federal Government. "It is also pertinent to clarify that the Service never imposed a general restriction on movement during the elections as averred. It is the duty of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to take measures necessary for the smooth conduct of any election, and in this case they deemed it proper to restrict movement during voting hours", she added. Signed: Marilyn OGAR, msi Deputy Director, Public Relations Department of State Services 30th September, 2014

Immediately after Lt. Felix Olanrewaju Odunlami squeezed the trigger of his service pistol, firing 9mm bullet at his target, the attention of a huge crowd of bystanders was drawn. The crowd suddenly metamorphosed into a lynch mob. One morning in July 2005, Lt. Odunlami drove through the Lagos' traffic snarl from the State Secretariat, Alausa to Apapa. At Allen Roundabout, Ikeja, an Okada rider bashed his car. Furious about the dent on his car, the naval officer unsheathed his gun from the holster. The Okada rider, Mr Peter Edeh, abandoned his bike and knelt down before Lt. Odunlami pleading for mercy. Edeh's plea fell on deaf ears as Lt. Odunlami shot him point blank in the mouth. Mr Edeh died instantly. The military officer's action therefore drew the ire of the crowd who set aflame Odunlami's overprotected car and attempted to lynch him. The police, quite unlike them, arrived at the scene immediately and rescued Odunlami from the mob. In its tradition, the military subjected Lt. Odunlami to General Court Martial, and charged him with "manslaughter, loss of service item (for inability to account for four rounds of 9mm live ammunition) and conduct prejudice of service discipline". The offences are punishable under sections 68(1)(a), 103(i) AFA 105 and 106 of the Armed Forces Act Cap A 20 laws of Nigeria. At the end of the military trial in July 2006, THISDAY reported that "the Court Martial convicted him on counts one and two. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment for manslaughter and dismissed him from service on count two." But despite the fact that the court martial didn't sentence him to death, Odunlami headed to Court of Appeal, praying that he be acquitted. After the appellate court upheld the decision of the Court Martial, the officer rushed to Supreme Court, which, to his chagrin, also upheld the decision of the Court of Appeal. On May 14, 2014 when some Nigerian soldiers in the newly-established 7th Division fired shots at the car of their General Officer Commanding (GOC), Major General Ahmadu Muhammad, for allowing their colleagues to fall into Boko Haram trap and suffer casualty, the soldiers were charged with mutiny. PREMIUM TIMES reported that "the aggrieved soldiers blamed the death of their colleagues on the military hierarchy in the division". Quoting sources in the military, the online news medium said "the dead soldiers and the survivors were ambushed while on a special operation in Kalabalge Local Government Area where locals had on Tuesday morning killed about 150 insurgents and arrested 10 others. After the operation, during which some military equipment were recovered from the insurgents, the soldiers who had arrived (at) the council (area), were asked to return to Maiduguri." Sensing the impeding danger, the soldiers requested their superiors to allow them pass the night in the area, and return to Maiduguri the following morning. The superiors turned down the request and insisted they return to the base. Midway into the night journey, Boko Haram ambushed and killed 12 soldiers among them. After Boko Haram murdered 12 soldiers, it appears the Nigerian Army too is following suit by sentencing 12 soldiers to death for protesting the killing of their colleagues by Boko Haram. Now I am wondering, after finding the 12 guilty of "three charges of conspiracy, mutiny and attempted murder of Major General Mohammed, I wondered why the same court martial did not sentence Lt. Odunlami to death for killing Okada rider in 2005. I also wondered what punishment did the court meted out on the GOC, whose wrong order led to the death of 12 gallant soldiers. He was sentenced to 'redeployment'. I was expecting to see General Muhammad and other top commanders being tried for giving the ruinous order that led to Nigerian army suffering the casualty. Naught! I'm bemused, seriously. I quizzed myself severally. Does this mean by attempting to kill a soldier, you get a death sentence but by killing Okada rider you only get a life sentence? So life of an Okada rider is not a life. It's just like killing a stray goat, huh? Issues of court martial and Sharia law under the Nigerian constitution always baffle me. I am not a fan of Nigeria's politico-doctrinal contraption called Sharia. But if the decision of Sharia court regarding apostasy or adultery can be reversed by the upper courts on the premise that the constitution does not regard them as capital offenses, the decision of the court martial regarding the 12 soldiers should also be looked into. Thank God the condemned soldiers have appealed their case. Similar instance occurred in 2009 when Brigadier-General Ishaya Bauka-led court martial sentenced 27 Nigerian soldiers who returned from UN peacekeeping in Liberia to life imprisonment for protesting the non-payment of their peacekeeping allowances. What sentence did the court martial pass on the senior officers who stowed away in their pockets the allowances of protesting soldiers? They were only 'sentenced' to demotion! But military brutality is not new to Nigerians. On slight infraction, Nigerians are killed, maimed, tortured, threatened, abused, raped or molested by those responsible for protecting us from being killed, maimed, tortured, threatened, abused, raped or molested. Nearly 20 years ago, a young man named Auwalu in Brigade area of Kano was beaten to death by a DPO. The DPO, bearing the monicker 'Kwanta Kwanta' because of his brutality, was notorious for torturing suspects. In order to seek justice, the father of the murdered young man left the body in the mortuary for years, writing all manner of petitions and traversing all manner of courts, including the Oputa Panel, in search of justice. To the best of my knowledge, the highest punishment Kwanta Kwanta received was redeployment to South. Nigerian law is always funny. It jails pickpockets and sets free a person who steals billions. Terrorism, to me, is greater than mutiny. You may disagree. But before you charge me with mutiny, let me ask you this question: who between notorious Boko Haram kingpin Ali Sanda Konduga and 12 mutinying soldiers deserve death sentence? Konduga, onetime spokesman of Boko Haram, was jailed for only three years! Only two days ago, the Federal High Court in Lagos sentenced three Boko Haram members to 25 years imprisonment each. Not life sentence, let alone death sentence! Again, earlier through the trial, The Nation reported, the Attorney General of the federation had entered a nolle prosequi (do not prosecute) in respect of two of Boko Haram members, and were subsequently discharged. "Later (on), another 11 were also discharged in the course of the trial following another nolle prosequi by the prosecution", said the newspaper. What kind of country is Nigeria?! I remember reading an editorial in the heat of Lt. Odunlami's killing of the Okada man in one of the Nigerian dailies, faulting the court martial's decision of sentencing the young officer to life imprisonment instead of handing down a death sentence on him. If my memory serves me right, the editorialists (perhaps bearing in mind the nature of Nigeria) argued that sentencing the officer to life imprisonment was a tactical way of preparing him for pardon and gaining freedom after serving a few years. The manner with which criminals are pardoned and thieves are honoured with National Merit Award, I wonder if Lt. Odunlami hasn't been surreptitiously pardoned and allowed to jet out of the country. source: saharareporters.com/2014/10/01/when-death-dozen-doesnt-matter-jaafar-jaafar
