KADUNA – A Kaduna State High Court yesterday threatened to jail the Commandant of Nigerian Defence Academy, NDA, Kaduna, Major General Muhammed Inuwa Idris over contempt of court order. The court’s warning was contained in ‘Form 48′, dated 25th May, 2015 and signed by the Registrar of the court Abubakar Habib. It was said to have been served on the Commandant through courier since last Thursday. The court document, titled; ‘Notice of Consequences of Disobedience to Court Order”, reads: “To Major General Muhammed Inuwa Idris (Commandant of Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna). “Take notice that the judgement creditors will on 18th day of June, 2015 at 9am in the forenoon, apply to this court for an order for your committal to proson for having disobeyed the perpetual order of injunction of this court made on 10th April 2014, restraining the defendants, especiall the 2nddefendant, NDA, whether by themselves, agents, servants, workmen, officers, privies and assigns whomsoever and howsoever otherwise from trespassing upon or disturbing the 1st and 2nd plaintiffs enjoyment of the properties known as Flat 4, no 11 Gongola Road, Barnawa and flat d, no. 36A Gongola Road, Barnawa, Kaduna. “And firther take notice that you are hereby required to attend the court on the fore mentioned day to show cause why an order for your committal should not be made”. The issue hanging over the NDA Commandant had to do with two contentious property, both in Barnawa GRA, Kaduna formerly belonging to NDA. But they were sold to the l Mr. Joseph Kingo Lafidi (now late) and to D. Akpam (also of blessed memory). Both were then civilian staff of the military institution. However, widows of the late NDA staff , Mrs. Elizabeth J. Lafidi (1st Plaintif) and Dorcas D. Akpam (2nd Plaintiff) were evicted from the property in 2010 by the NDA authority . The widows however took the matter to court and won the case on April 2014. But, the property were forcefully taken from them by the NDA. Counsel to the widows, Barrister Lekan Oyerinde approached the same Kaduna State High Court in Suit No: KDH/KAD/737/2015, alleged that the NDA commandant acted against the Judgment of the court and forcefully evicted the ‘original owners’ using armed soldiers. The NDA disregarded several summons over the case of contempt against it. But when contacted on phone, a source close to the academy who doesn’t want to be quoted said, the matter is in appeal court sand therefore, he would not want to comment much on it. Even though, he did not provide the appeal number, the source said, ”the widows were dubious about the house, NDA has announced severally that no staff should get any house through the monetization because the academy is an institution where people come and go, so there is no way it can monetize its houses, if it does, where will the people coming after live?” He further noted that widows were not told to evacuate NDA staff quarters until the entitlement of their husbands were paid. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/court-threatens-nda-commandant-with-jail-sentence-for-contempt-of-court/ |

An outbreak of a strange ailment has claimed more than twenty five lives in Ode Irele in Irele local government area of Ondo State, a community leader has told SaharaReporters. In a telephone interview with our correspondent, the community leader, Ayodele Omole, stated that the “strange ailment” broke out on Wednesday morning and had already created panic among residents, adding that many people were fleeing from the community. In a radio broadcast, the Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dayo Adeyanju, confirmed the outbreak, but assured residents that it was not Ebola. Even though the source of the epidemic has not been determined, Mr. Omole stated that many residents had blamed it on an “evil spiritual attack.” “We noticed the strange ailment yesterday (Wednesday),” said Mr. Omole. “Several people lost their sight before they died instantly. “As at the last count, in the early hours of today (Thursday), more than 25 dead bodies were counted in the streets of Irele. “Unlike yesterday, people are now scared of carrying the bodies because of fear of infections. Some residents have fled the community for Ore town while others are planning to leave for Akure for total safety.” He stated that, in addition causing blindness, the unknown disease also caused victims’ tongues to swell abnormally, rendering the victims incapable of speech, prior to death within a few hours. Mr. Omole said many in the community saw the ailment as having “a spiritual cause,” adding that they believed it was beyond the control of state health officials. He added that the residents were hoping that some traditional healers would quickly come in to help. A young resident in the town said the gods in the community were angry because “some section of the shrine was recently destroyed and some sacred objects stolen by unknown people.” He said some worshipers of the deity and traditional priests were meeting to discover those behind the theft. Meanwhile, the state government has confirmed the outbreak of the “unknown disease,” adding that it was on top of the situation. In a broadcast on a state-owned radio station in Akure, the state capital, the Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Mr. Adeyanju, said the ravaging disease was not Ebola as some feared. The commissioner stated that health officials and equipment had been deployed to the community to curtail the spread of the strange disease. “The community outbreak team informed us yesterday morning of disease outbreak in Irele. The unknown disease isn’t Ebola as it doesn’t manifest any of its symptoms, but only attacks the central nervous system of the victims. “We can’t really say what is responsible for this ailment. It was clear that those who had died had no symptoms of vomiting or diarrhea,” said Mr. Adeyanju, adding that the symptoms of the ailment included headaches and loss of sight prior to death. “The disease has been spread to the whole town and it has been very difficult to trace it to a particular source because it had already spread across the whole local government of Irele,” he said. The health commissioner disclosed that investigations had commenced to determine the cause and source of the strange epidemic stressing that blood samples from some victims have been taken to a laboratory in Lagos for tests. saharareporters.com/2015/04/16/infectious-disease-outbreak-kills-over-25-ondo-health-officials-claim-it-not-ebola |

Yesterday, the General Court-Martial sitting in Abuja which tried another batch of 59 soldiers for conspiracy to mutiny and mutiny convicted 54 of the accused persons and sentenced them to death while 5 were discharged and acquitted. The acquittal was designed to give the false impression that the dubious verdict was fair and just. The soldiers were in the SF 111 Batallion which has 174 instead of 750 soldiers. The soldiers in the Batallion were neither equipped nor motivated. They are young men whose ages range between 21 and 25. Most of them joined the army in 2012. With little or no training whatsoever they were deployed to fight the dreaded Boko Haram sect. The funds allocated for payment of the salaries and allowances of the soldiers and for purchase of arms and ammunition are usually diverted and cornered by corrupt military officers. Instead of bringing such unpatriotic officers to book the military authorities have engaged in the diversionary tactics of wasting the lives of innocent soldiers by sentencing them to death without any legal justification. On July 9, 2014 the Boko Haram sect launched a ferocious attack on the Batallion. As the soldiers were ill-equipped and ill-motivated the well armed terrorists killed 3 officers and 23 soldiers and inflicted serious injuries on 82 others. While sympathizing with the bereaved soldiers the army authorities assured them that adequate weapons would be provided to match the sophisticated weapons of the Boko Haram sect. But without the provision of the said weapons the soldiers were ordered on August 4, 2014 to recapture Delwa, Balubulin and Damboa in Borno State from the Boko Haram terrorists. The soldiers demanded for weapons so as not to lose more officers and men in the circumstance. A few soldiers who embarked on the suicidal mission together with the Commanding Officer were ambushed by the Boko Haram troops. When some weapons were made available on August 8, 2014, the soldiers moved to the battlefront, dislodged the satanic Boko Haram sect and liberated their captured colleagues and officers. They were commended for their bravery and sacrifice. But for some inexplicable reasons, the army authorities ordered that the soldiers be charged with mutiny for allegedly exposing the armed forces to embarrassment by asking for weapons! Thus, 60 soldiers were charged before the court-martial led by Brigadier-General M. Yusuf. The charge was however withdrawn against one of them on health ground. When the trial commenced against the remaining 59 the court-martial allowed defense correspondents and reporters to cover the proceedings. But the revealing testimonies of the prosecution witnesses embarrassed the army authorities. In particular, the defence pointed out that by not providing the soldiers with adequate weapons the Federal Government had violated Section 217 (2) (b) of the Constitution which provides that the Federation shall, subject to an Act of the National Assembly made in that behalf, equip and maintain the armed forces as may be considered adequate and effective for the purpose of maintaining its territorial integrity and securing its borders from violation on land, sea or air. It is public knowledge that it was when the trial of the soldiers was in progress that the President and Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, sought and obtained the approval of the National Assembly for a loan of USD$1 billion to purchase equipment for the prosecution of the war on terror. Up till now, the loan has not been utilized for the purchase of weapons! It was on the basis of such revelation that the court-martial resorted to sitting in camera and prohibited the media from further reporting the proceedings. In the judgment delivered yesterday the court-martial refused to consider the evidence led in court and convicted 54 of the soldiers for having the temerity to ask for weapons to carry out the task of defending the territorial integrity of the nation. Since the soldiers were justified in refusing to commit suicide the verdict which is characterized by gross miscarriage of justice will not stand. Apart from the fact that the Prosecution did not lead any scintilla of evidence to prove the 2-count charge of conspiracy and mutiny against any of the convicts the Court-martial did not consider the defence of the soldiers in any material particular. Convinced that soldiers who made a legitimate demand for equipment to fight the insurgents cannot, by any stretch of imagination, be properly convicted for mutiny we shall take all necessary legal measures to prevent the army authorities from giving effect to the genocidal verdict of the court-martial. We submit that the oath of allegiance taken by the accused soldiers is not a license to commit suicide. It is a solemn undertaking to defend the nation based on the expectation that the Federal Government would have complied with Section 217 of the Constitution on the mandatory requirement to equip the armed forces adequately. It is important to state that when equipment was made available on 18 August 2014, the accused soldiers fought gallantly. The son of a former Governor of Ondo State, Gboyega Adefarati, was on Sunday among the losers in the contest for the All Progressives Congress tickets for the House of Representatives elections. Adefarati lost the Akoko South West/East to Babatunde Kolawole, while Friday Olemija won in the Akoko North East/West. The exercise was largely peaceful, even as the party used the open ballot system in the process across the state. In Ondo, Ifedore, Akure, Owo and Akoko local governments, it was observed that the security operatives, Independent National Electoral Commission officers and party returning officers were all present in good time to screen the delegates. In Ilaje /Ese Odo Federal Constituency, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa emerged the candidate of the party after defeating Barrister Benson Enikuomehin. Also, in Akure South/North federal constituency, a former State House of Assembly lawmaker, Pastor Afe Olowokere, who scored 328 votes defeated his closest rival, Mr. Shaka Yusuf, who scored 292 votes. In Ondo West/East, there was consensus arrangement among the party delegates and Hon. Dele Olanubi emerged as the party flag- bearer. The Pro-Chancellor of Achievers University got the party ticket for Owo/Ose federal constituency, while the delegates from Ifedore/ Idanre federal constituency voted for Baderinwa Bamidele. A chieftain of the party, Chief Tayo Alasoadura commended the leaders for giving room for internal democracy, stressing that such system had helped the party to be transparent in producing popular candidates. Alasoadura, who is one of the senatorial aspirants for Ondo Central said, “The transparent system designed by the party where aspirants were allowed to test their popularity on political field has helped to curb rancour in the primaries so far. How can you be angry when you are allowed to participate in the primaries voting system? “And also members of the party are interested in winning power in the state and if we start fighting how are we going to win the hearts of the people. I am very sure that at the end of the day, the winners will call upon the losers and make sure they work for the progress of the party.” www.punchng.com/news/adefaratis-son-enikuomehin-lose-in-ondo-apc-primaries/ |
T wo factions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State on Saturday held separate primary elections to select candidates for election into the House of Representatives. The two factions belong to aggrieved “Old” PDP and the “New” PDP members. Correspondents of SaharaReporters who monitored the primaries in Akure, the state capital, reported that two separate hotels were used as venues to conduct the primary elections. Members of the “Old” PDP met at Helena Hotel along Ado/Owo expressway while the “New” PDP members used Solton Hotel in Ijapo for their primaries. In the end, two parallel candidates emerged from the factions to represent the party in Akure South and North Federal constituencies. The “Old” PDP faction selected Mr. Adedayo Omolafe whilst the “New” faction went for Mr. Dare Aliu. Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who recently defected from the Labor to the PDP, is the main mastermind of the “New” PDP while a controversial businessman, Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim, controls the “Old” PDP. Both factional leaders have also chosen different parallel executive members for their state chapter. Mr. Mimiko’s executive is headed by Clement Faboyede, while Mr. Ibrahim’s executive is led by Olu Ogunye. Both men are from the central senatorial district of the state. Both have since christened their different camps “PDP Gbasibe” for the “New” PDP and “PDP Koniba” for the “Old” PDP members. Our correspondent who visited the primary election at Helena Hotel reported that Mr. Adedayo Omolafe emerged as the party’s factional candidates for the Akure South and North Federal Constituency unopposed having polled 67 votes of the total delegates. Although 89 delegates were expected at the primary, 71 delegates showed up while 67 were accredited. All of them endorsed Mr. Omolafe. Another correspondent at Solton Hotel reported that Mr. Dare Aliu emerged as the party’s consensus candidate for the same Akure South and North Federal constituency. 72 delegates attended the primary and unanimously picked Mr. Aliu. The PDP in Akure South local government has 11 wards while Akure North local government has 12 wards. Ondo State has nine seats at House of Representatives. Our correspondent also reported that Mr. Akin Akingbesote emerged as the party’s candidate in Idanre Ifedore Federal Constituency with 41 votes while Moshood Bakare scored 15 votes and Ayo Agbomuserin polled 10 votes. There are strong indications that the former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Banabas Gemade has decided to join the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, to realize his re-election bid in the Senate. Already Senator Gemade who represents Benue North East Senatorial District has tendered a letter of withdrawal from the PDP’s senatorial primaries expected to hold tomorrow as a result of the alleged hijack of the process by the State Governor, Gabriel Suswan. A close ally of the erstwhile National Chairman of the PDP who spoke to Saturday Vanguard on the condition of anonymity hinted that Senator Gemade may likely pick the APC form on Monday to contest the senatorial election in the area. The source further stated that Gemade who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on National Planning will join forces with the former governor of the state and Senate Minority Leader, Senator George Akume to ensure that APC captures the state in 2015 general elections. The source claimed that Senator Gemade decided to leave the PDP because the National Working Committee, NWC, of the PDP, turned down the list of his (Gemade) delegates and recognized the governor’s list which he claimed were allegedly written in the comfort of his Anyiim, Logo country home, Benue State. It will be recalled that Senator Akume was allegedly pushed out of the PDP and he joined the opposition party to win his election in 2011 and has become a Chieftain of the APC and Minority Leader in the senate. Senator Gemade in his withdrawal letter addressed to the National Chairman of the PDP Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu dated December 2nd, 2014, with the title “PDP primary elections for Senate 2015-withdrawal”, complained about lack of transparency and level playing field in the way and manner the party’s primary election is being conducted. He lamented over his alleged forceful withdrawal from the PDP senatorial primaries, saying that he had realised that things had degenerated to the level that no one should expect a level playing field or even any democratic action in the party’s affairs. He said that as a founding member of the PDP in 1998 and indeed the leader of the Conveners in Benue State, he was pained by the undemocratic developments in the party where the party structure was surrendered to the state government. Senator Gemade noted, with dismay, that there was no room for an honest and law abiding member of PDP in having a fair chance in any contest in the forthcoming primary elections as anyone who was capable of manipulating the process, albeit illegally, was free to do so, and will be protected. The letter for his withdrawal read in part: “I am constrained to write you for the fourth time in two months on the subject matter of the happenings in the PDP in my state as they affect me and our teeming members who have toiled over the years to give victory to our party for four consecutive general elections. “As a founding member of this party in 1998 and indeed the leader of the Conveners in Benue State, I am pained by these developments and I want to put on record my feelings even if there is no result arising from it. “At least, the history of my service as convener, member national steering committee, member Executive Committee (NEC), member National Working Committee (NWC), member Board of Trustees (BOT), National Chairman and Chairman National Caucus should count. “I have come to realise that things have got to a point where one cannot expect a level playing ground or even any democratic action in our affairs in the party. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/12/ex-pdp-national-chairman-gemade-joins-apc/?utm_source=&utm_medium=facebook
