"If your greenhouse culture must make sense, then it has to be soilless"

Soil is the uppermost layer of the earth crust where plants grow. As a man that eats at least once a day, you will agree with me if i say that "soil is one of the greatest gift of nature to man" as almost every(if not all) agricultural activities depends on the soil.

"Agronomically", the major role that soil plays can be classified under 2 basic categories;
1. Providing support to the plants.
2. Harbors water and nutrients, needed for growth and productivity of the plants.

SOIL IS THIS IMPORTANT YOU SAY?? WHY THEN DO I HAVE TO GO SOILLESS??

Over time, due to continuous cultivation and other human activities, the productivity of the soil has been declining and as a result of this, the yield , relative to the effort invested is low and hence, farming gets tougher and not encouraging. Also, there are notorious soil borne diseases(an experience with bacterial wilt of tomato will explains better)that can be responsible for 100% loss of investment when they strike.
Furthermore, the current trend of climate change has posed a lot of threat to productivity of the soil.
These amidst other factors increases the level of uncertainty in plant cultivation lately.

BUT IN ALL THESE THINGS, CANT I APPLY FERTILIZER TO AMELIORATE THE PERFORMANCE OF MY SOIL??

of course yes, but it is important to note that there are some adhesive properties of the soil that makes nutrient unavailable to the plants , despite application of fertilizer.

WHY HYDROPONICS!!!!!!

Simply put; I want to be in reasonable control of the nutrition of my crops; this is the justification for my choice of hydroponics;

Recall, that it was earlier spelled out that the basic role that soil plays in crop life is the support for the root ,provision of water and
nutrient for growth... hydroponics systems has found alternative ways to support the plants and feed the plants better than the soil. soilless culture(hydroponics is such that, the necessary nutrient elements (Micro and macro) are made available in the required proportion in solution for uptake by plants. This accounts for the significant difference that is seen when hydroponics is compared to the conventional way of growing on the soil......
