I hardly come back home without being angry over the primitive pattern of driving on PH roads plus those rickety and old vehicles running around. The society is crazy but it's not impossible to fix. We have experts in these fields but the system has NO space for such.
It won't take me more than a year to effectively manage PH traffic situation. It won't. I'm sure it will happen. |

We learned all these crazy habits over the years. We can unlearn them. And we can replace them with better habits. Every little helps. I hope one person will through this medium rethink. Everybody on the road is the other person for another person. |

Nigeria us weak when it comes to consistent enforcement of laws and allowable standards.
If a person is sure he's gonna get way with routine traffic violations, they will seek to continue it.
I've driven against traffic on two occasions and I felt so awkward and extremely selfish. I've stopped that primitive and selfish ever since.
If we must sanitise this madness, then the government must come put really hard and firm about it. People only obey enforced laws. Yes. you are right. The govt has to be resolute but the problem is, the govt is made up of people from among us. |
Car Talk › Traffic Questions For Drivers In The House by agabaI23(op): 8:43pm On Aug 06, 2015 |
I have been wondering for a long time why certain things happen on our roads. I have long wanted to create this thread out of my experience and observations of what happen on our roads but somehow, I have not been able till today. My questions are
1. How do you really feel when you deliberately drive against traffic knowing very well that you will obstruct traffic flow on the opposite lane?
Have you tried to check the amount of time you gained by breaking traffic laws?
2. Do you really feel stupid or happy when a lot of motorists are kept at a standstill because of your selfish decision? Do you know that apart from gridlocks resulting from bad spots on the road or police's N50 tolls, most gridlocks result from selfish decisions of people like you who are well dressed and are on long ties.
3. Do you know that when you patiently queue in your right lane that the gridlock clears faster than when you try to cut corners? It is possible that you may escape if you are the first to start the madness but those who follow after you will end up closing up the road. You could be among those trapped on a different day.
4. Are you one of those who drive against traffic in a 4 lane road even when your side of the road is devoid of traffic or roadblocking pothole just because you won't bother to drive up to to a U-turn before you turn to get to where you can branch off the road? You end up flashing your headlamp at on-coming vehicles who are not expecting any intruders in your mould? The funny thing is that most times, the time it will take you to do the right thing would be just less than 2 minutes.
Do we just enjoy breaking laws or we prefer to be chased around? Do not come here to tell me that police do the same. Yes they do the same because they are selected from among us. Do you have to do it because others are doing it? What right do you have to criticize the government when you cannot do little required of you?
Always remember that when we do things right on the road, we save more time than when we do the wrong thing. Always remember that the happiness and 'less stress' you feel in developed countries is because majority of the citizens choose to do the right thing.
When we break traffic laws, we impose stress on ourselves and other road users who will have to adjust to accommodate your careless and selfish conduct.
Oya bring it on
Moderators, I will actually like to hear what many Nigerians think when they drive on our roads |

Politics › Re: Naira "Appreciation": Why Nigerians Should Not Celebrate by agabaI23(m): 4:32pm On Aug 04, 2015*. Modified: 9:09pm On Aug 04, 2015 |
barcanista: Is the value of the Naira really appreciating in the real sense or the CBN and the FG are playing pranks on Nigerians? Why are commodities still high in the market?
Ideal Situation Ideally, customers operating domiciliary accounts will go to the banks, deposit their dollar and through that account they do whatever transaction that they deem necessary. The Banks inturn will take the dollars(and other foreign currencies) to the CBN.
The Buhari/Emefiele Situation 1. The CBN has stopped receiving dollars from banks, as a result the banks has stopped accepting dollars at the counter because their vaults are full.
2. Because of the restriction at 1(above) the demand for dollar reduces in the BDC. The BDCs seek every means to trade the currency including reducing the cost at the black market. The CBN will go to the press to scream "NAIRA IS APPRECIATING."
3. As a result of 1(above) the banks also refuse to request dollars from the CBN's foreign exchange reserve. The CBN will then come out to scream "RESERVE IS GROWING".
Is that the best way to manage the naira?
Salient Question and Effects: 1. What happens to a businessmen with domiciliary account seeking to deposit dollars and transfer to their partners abroad after buying the dollar from BDC or Bank?
2. The bank's refusal to accept dollar deposit means business transaction on that will be halted. Because no domiciliary account holder will be willing to withdraw from his account when he knows that he won't be able to make further deposit due to the CBN's policy except if his intention is solely for converting the dollar to naira for local transaction.
3. Instead of doing transactions from domiciliary account, businessmen will be left with no choice but to operate domiciliary account in neighbouring countries where they will be making transactions or resort to wiring money via Western Union in neighboring country.
4. As a result of 3(above) the cost of commodities will go UP because businesses will make up for the extra expenses. Also, that will mean reduction in business activities in the banks.
5. Should the above persist it will get to a certain point where there will be scarcity of the dollar in the market. When it get to that point, the dollar rate is astronomically shooooooot up in the market because demand will outweigh supply. At this point, the naira problem will be worse than it was.
Is The Naira Really Appreciating? Make no mistake, the naira-dollar rate is yet to appreciate in the international market. As at May 29 the naira/$ rate was N199 in the market. The rate as at today Aug 5, 2015 is still N199. You can't appreciate a currency via the backdoor. Even the black market rate cannot be regulated through the back door.
What "Sane" Countries Does: The CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele made it look like one can't deposit foreign currencies in cash in another country. This is contrary to the facts on ground. No country will shut down foreign currencies transactions in banks. Let me give two instances...
On February 27, 2015, the Central Bank of Egypt instituted a new policy to help the Egyptian pound. As part of the policy, Individuals and businesses are allowed a maximum of $10,000(or equivalent) deposit daily and $50,000(or equivalent) monthly. The measure would stop companies from buying large amounts of dollars from the black market and then depositing them briefly in banks in order to open letters of credit for imports.
In China the maximum daily deposit/withdrawal of foreign currencies is $10,000(or equivalent).
Is it not better to place a transactional limit for foreign currencies than discourage deposit completely(that will solve nothing)? We don't produce, we import, we have no policy to promote local production nor infrastructures in place toencourage manufacturers, yet we expect the naira to appreciate. That is no done anywhere.
I will be glad to get the views of others.
God Bless Us All Physical fiscal policies like it was in 1984 comes to mind. The lightening is striking twice and it is a bad omen. MizMyColi, I'm here and I know this guy has come again with his abracadabra economics. We are watching! |

But most time, the 100k plus covers for it all. Thanks for the criticism though. Espeaklekwa! 100k is OK for for a standard Engineering and science-based undergraduate project in this 2015. This your thread is funny to be honest. Refinery: he said he can't take credit, do you think he will accept credit for NEPA? Yet listed all those as his achievements. Please how can one allow a program run more than expected? Is it by failing a course? I intend doin it full time though.
Thanks for your contribution bro. Your project is a research. You propose to do stuff that no one has done or to find out what will happen if some variables are changed. For instance, if you the normal practice is to use XY in building roads, will using XYZ make the road stronger... Or maybe pouring certain chemical on fragile untarred road will eliminate the need for asphalting. You will have to test the idea. It is not certain. You will have do the costing of what you want to do. Staying extra year may due to many factors 1. You are not serious with the work. 2. Your supervisor doesn't have time for you 3. The project you started failed or you made a mistake 4. You could not get a certain research material delivered on time etc. |

iyisco2001: You really need to decide yourself, can u handle business, then go for it. Msc will cost you around 300k, about certification in civil engineering, I am not really familiar. But, try and see if you can get internship to gain some work experience. Remember, only you know your capabilities, in this kind of situation, only you can advise yourself, best of luck. How did you arrive at 300k? The cost of a masters training will depend on 1. Tuition 2. Time of completion 3. Type project Tuition is a constant which can increase in multiples of 2, 3 if you allow your programme to run more than the minimum number of sessions allowable for your programme. For instance, if you do not finish under 1 year, you will pay for the next academic session. Engineering projects are capital intensive. The cost of getting your materials and the cost of the materials; the cost of seminars and a whole lot. You can limit this cost if have a good proposal and a good supervisor meaning that you know what you are doing. However there is no guarantee that your experiment will work out in first attempt. Go into research/academics if it is your passion if not ....... Goodluck |
