The Presidency has condemned some international news outlets ascribing the detention and release of the Convener of Revolution Now, Omoyele Sowore, to journalism.

Malam Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, said Sowore was detained and later released on bail today by the Department of State Service (DSS) not due to his work as a journalist but because he called for a revolution to overthrow the democratically elected government of Nigeria.

Shehu made the clarification in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday.

The presidential aide, therefore, frowned at those ascribing his detention and release to his job as a journalist.

The statement read in part: “The Presidency wishes to clarify the release on bail of the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress in the February 2019 elections, Omowale Sowore

“Some international news outlets have mistakenly been describing his release as that of a journalist.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Buhari administration has never, since coming into office in 2015, detained a journalist, seized copies of newspapers or shut down a medium of information.

“Sowore called for a revolution to overthrow the democratically elected government of Nigeria. He did so on television, and from a privileged position as the owner of a widely read digital newspaper run from the United States of America.

“He founded an organisation, Revolution Now, to launch, in their own words, “Days of Rage”, with the publicised purpose of fomenting mass civil unrest and the elected administration’s overthrow.

“No government will allow anybody to openly call for destabilization in the country and do nothing.

“The government believes strictly in observing the rule of law but must safeguard public security and will not allow trouble makers to incite the public and cause a breakdown of law and order.’’

Also, the presidential aide disclosed that Federal Government may appeal against the court judgments that granted bails to the former National Security Adviser, retired Col. Sambo Dasuki and Convener of #RevolutionNow, Omoyele Sowore.

Malam Garba Shehu stated this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday while reacting to the presidential directive on the release of Dasuki and Sowore.

He said that the decision by the Nigerian government to release the affected persons on bail was informed by the need to observe the rules of the law.

“Not withstanding the right of the government which are very clear to it under the constitution of Nigeria to appeal this order for their release, to the Court of Appeal in fact to follow the entire judicial process leading up to the Supreme Court.

“The government has decided, as an important lesson, that compliance to the rule of law of the court of the land is important, government is asking them to go, is releasing them.

“The processes of their trials will continue and the government will be using the same process to assert its right also appealing the terms and conditions under which the court said they should be released.

“However, the President wants an important lesson to be taught in the country – this is that – `we will obey the order and they will be let go and the processes will go.”

It’s no more news that Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the federation, Abubakar Malami, through the DG, has ordered the DSS to release Omoyele Sowore after spending 124 days.

Despite two court order to effect Sowore’s release, the federal government and the Department of State Security (DSS) failed to comply with court rulings with continued incarceration of the Sowore, who was accused of trying to overthrow the FG with his call for revolution.

The Buhari administration has come under several condemnation form both local and international community due to her action on Sowore’s detention, likening this administration to a military dictatorship ruling.

However, new evidence has came to light since Sowore’s release around 6pm on Christmas eve that the govt released Sowore due to immense pressure from the United States. The US govt had threaten Buhari, stating that his failure to comply with court order would mean that the White House might severe all relationship with the 77-year-old president.

Leaked letter from the United States Congress, date December 20, 2019 showed how 4 US Senators and 2 Congress Men wrote letter to the Nigerian Government demanding the releases of Omoyele Sowore, who is the publisher of US based online news publication; The Sahara Reporters.

In their letter, the US Congress states that;

“ Mr. Attorney General, we request that you take immediate steps to ensure the safety and security of Mr. Sowore while he is held in government custody; work to facilitate a speedy and fair resolution to the current circumstances of his re-detention ; and ensure that he receives a legally sound and credible trial, consistent with Nigeria's established judicial proceedings and therulings that follow.

Indefinite detention in defiance of court orders and/or unfairly conducting Mr. Sowore's legal prosecution will only serve to tarnish Nigeria's international reputation and its standing as a leading African democracy. Doing so risks empowering other voices who would seek to work against you. Your leadership in facilitating genuine progress toward respect for the rule of law can continue to pave the way for closer ties between the United States and Nigeria for years to come, strengthening continue economic growth, development and security cooperation. We urge you to show leadership in this case and on critical issues.”

The China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC)has designed a high-speed modern train using 21st century technology to travel at a speed faster than an aero plane.

Report indicates that a bullet train which ‘floats’ above the tracks using magnetic levitation could soon hit 373mph in China – making it faster than travelling by plane.

A prototype body of the science fiction vehicle was shown off in the eastern Chinese city of Qingdao this week.

The machine, designed by China’s China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC), is slated to go into production in 2021.

CRRC Qingdao Sifang will now build an experimental track to test the train.

Meanwhile, Nigeria is still operating and celebrating ancient locomotive train blowing off thick carbon while on transit.

From my little knowledge of cryptocurrency, there are so many projects that are not even successful, and that appeared to be scam from the onset, but they didn't have to face as much hurdles as Onecoin is facing. My questions are:
1.why are some people very desperate to stop this project?
2. Assuming it's actually a scam as people claim, why haven't they been able to stop them since 2014?
3. Why would any normal person deploy so much resources, time and energy to call another person or company names?
The questions could go on and on, but the bottom line is that whatever it is, we will surely see the end of it.

I was already rounding off work (not ‘rounding up’) on the topic I initially wanted to discuss this week when a visual artist and friend, Mufu Onifade, brought up the issue of ‘My names are …’ on Facebook. Like many other people, he finds the expression nauseating and thus wondered why some people feel comfortable using it.

Despite the fact that it has been established several times that ‘My names are…’ is grammatically wrong, a lot of people still flaunt it the way Davido and many other stars flaunt their super cars. At different events, I have heard many people say it, usually with exaggerated confidence, when they wanted to introduce themselves. To them, it is better to say ‘My names are…’ than ‘My name is …’ because they have more than ‘a name’. They notionally take into account their first name, surname, middle name and every other one they might have amassed.

Truly, many Africans cherish having a wealth of names. I am at least sure of what obtains in Yoruba culture where, apart from the name(s) that one’s parents give, the grandparents and other relatives can bless the child with other appellations – some capturing the circumstances of one’s birth, some appealing to one’s heritage, some denoting prayers while some are simply pet names. Whichever nationality or tribe is involved, the fact remains that it is extremely rare for people to have and bear just the first name or surname.

Well, the Nigerian cultural/literary community will quickly remind me that there is the legendary Chinweizu, a cultural activist and author of books that include ‘The West and the Rest of Us’, ‘Decolonising the African Mind’, ‘Anatomy of Female Power’ as well as ‘Energy Crisis and other Poems’. Interestingly, there was also another younger writer who projected only one name – Ebereonwu. The author of some literary works and producer of ‘Piccadilly’ and some other movies, unfortunately, died in an auto accident in 2007. For one reason or the other, Chinweizu and Ebereonwu chose to bear just one appellation. What is most important, however, is that no matter how many items are in the collection of one’s name, the correct thing to say is ‘My name is…’, not ‘My names are…’:

My names are John AdeolaAjagbe. (Wrong)

My name is John AdeolaAjagbe. (Correct)

My names are Umar Yakubu Danladi Abdulahmed. (Wrong)

My name is Umar Yakubu Danladi Abduahmed. (Correct)

There are facts you need to consider towards understanding that you neither pluralise ‘name’ in the context under consideration nor do you use ‘are’ instead of ‘is’. First, no matter how long the first name, middle name or surname is, it is still a name and ‘is’ is the right verb for it – even if it is as long as comedian Ali Baba’s Atunyota Alleluya Akporobomerere.

Your name is your identity or who you are. Know, however, that criminals have names. They are one name somewhere and another name somewhere else.

Also, no matter how many items you combine in the compound name, you still treat it as a singular subject. This applies to the three examples given above. Of course, you must realise that pluralising your name is not a status symbol because many of those guilty of the error seem to portray it as such. If anything, it is a status error.

An exception?

Experts have somehow reluctantly conceded that there may be one or two occasions the plural structure can be accepted. An instance is if a person parades a real name and an unconventional, a fake or an assumed name like a pseudonym. For instance, if an armed robber with a real name (Ken Waziri) bears a coded name (Bobby Scorpion) among his or her colleagues, when caught, he can combine the real name and the coded one with ‘are’:

My names are Ken Waziri Bobby Scorpion. (Wrong)

My name is Ken Waziri aka Bobby Scorpion. (Correct)

My names are Ken Waziri and Bobby Scorpion. (Correct)

You would observe that the last example has a semblance of plurality; but then you should note the use of ‘and’ in the structure. It is not like the first example without the conjunction.

On a more positive note, remember that there are some writers who write under pen names or pseudonyms. Imagine if they have cause to reveal their dual identity. The rare plurality may apply:

My names are Femi Osofisan and Okinba Launko. (Correct, very correct.)

Hope you know that the renowned dramatist, Prof. Femi Osofisan, has also published several works with the pseudonym, Okinba Launko. Yet compare this example to wrong ones such as

My names are Akinwande Oluwole Babatunde Soyinka. (Wrong)

My name is Akinwande Oluwole Babatunde Soyinka. (Correct)

My names are Albert Chinalmg Achebe (Wrong)
