estcood: understand what you are saying perfectly and that is the Holy truth. We can shout and point fingers at the Government all we want. The region needs a revolution against its on leaders. Primarily the Chiefs and Governors and administrators at LG levels. The money that goes into some of the communities is unthinkable. I have a first person experience. It never get used for its purpose or simply dropped in someone's account.
The people of the region need to come up with one voice, come out of regional politics and make their leaders accountable. God bless you bro, 3 bottles of your choice drink is on me. |

duni04: I get irritated whenever someone says the government hasn't done enough. I've been to bonny (stayed at hospital road), brass (Ben mark hotel), warri (Cyprian hotel refinery road), Escravos ogidigben and Portharcourt and onne. These people have DESOPADEC and the other oil agencies in the other states. They have the NDDC, they have the Ministry of Niger delta. Then they have the office of the special assistant to the President on Niger delta or Amnesty. What the hell else do they want? They give them billions of dollars and Naira every year and they keep squandering it on rubbish. Then they go and plant Dynamites on the pipelines and threaten to blow them if we refuse to give them more! We can't continue living like that! Enough is enough! I think it all still boils down to accountability, all these agencies have not truly made an impact on the grassroots (with respect to riverine communities). In the less than 1 year I spent, DESOPADEC provided a single 15 seater bus, the likes used by all these transport companies and the bus wasn't even a new one and they expect the bus to serve 4 communities (we had just one school in the midst of 4 oil producing communities). You will agree that shouldn't be, they deserve more than a bus. Now considering a sizable portion of the population are not literates, if the powers that be in these agencies tell them we are not getting money from the Centre hence we can't carry out projects, they will take it in hook, line and sinker because they believe their 'people' can't deceive them so blaming the FG becomes a easy thing to do. The FG has a fault in the sense that they need to show they care, she shouldn't be comfortable with setting up agencies to take charge of what's going on over there. |

NavierStokes: Well put bro, just to state educating these children is the duty of the government, reason why it's always important to catch them young because it saves you some avengers in the future. Don't be surprised that the oil company or oil activities has been taking place in that community and the company as part of her CSR hasn't deemed it fit to provide conducive learning environment. The children who weren't educated 20/30 years ago will become the thorn on the flesh of society you find today. I always say something and in this case its for the oil companies, if you are blessed and you are not a blessing to those around you, then you are a curse and people do anything to break free from curses. A rich man in the midst of poor people shouldn't consider himself safe. Hopefully majority of these problems will be solved either under the aegis of One Nigeria or smaller nations that will emerge from her split (I pray for the former) cause the Riverine communities have really been through a lot. Meanwhile, to whom it may concern, I dey find work abeg. House don dey tire me |

NavierStokes: Any one with a heart will know that government owes a lot to these communities rather than peanuts given to their leaders. If government wants to touch their lives they should go ahead and do so rather than give peanuts to their leaders and use that as accused to deny these people of development. On a final note some friends from these indigenous companies have told me about the wonderful ways they engage the communities for their csrs and they achieve meaningful results that positively impacts on the communities. The government can borrow a leaf or two from there. I had to delete part of your post to avoid taking up space on the thread, apologies for that. I agree the government has not done enough, in fact it is safe to say the government has done nothing at all but at the same time I'm speaking from my own point of view which might not be rational to other people, I believe these people have not done enough for themselves too, there is a chain of command, why are they not holding their respective LG and SG by the throat to ensure there is increased government presence in their midst. Again, maybe because I've the mindset of do what you can with the little you've, I feel they've not put to good use the little they got, I will give you a scenario, I served in a secondary school in one of the Ijaw communities, this is a school that has a single block of 6 classrooms then buildings that housed offices and residential quarters, no laboratory or similar things. Based on what I heard, the community usually has one or two slots with the oil company domiciled there, the community fixes in someone to work, the person gets paid part and remits the other part to the community (this is different from the numerous positions available to indigenes), going by this I expected them to have a certain amount that goes into developing their children vis a vis provision of conducive learning environment since the government at all tiers have failed in their responsibilities, rather what I saw is a case of once the money comes, we divide and eat and wait for the next pay day. Just maybe my side of the argument is borne out of me being a non indigene of that area but it's an open secret the Nigerian govt has failed her citizens and has failed the South South even more. |

NavierStokes: At this point President Buhari should do a simple cost -benefit analysis of going after Tompolo and negotiating with the avengers. The cost of maintaining an army down south in the face of dwindling income will be devastating while depleting our armoury. I wonder what scares the northerners on this issue of fiscal federalism. A careful look at the big picture shows that the centre will have more to gain in the long run, if all states are trading in the areas they have comparative advantage, the taxes to the centre will be more considering that the centre will mainly be in charge of making policies and maintaining security. This current structure/ system only breeds laziness, envy, anxiety and the end product WAR. It can never hold indefinitely, I just hope Buhari realized. The fact that Aguiyi Ironsi put Nigeria into this less doesn't mean years after people get enlightened they shouldn't do some thing about it.
To the issue of pipeline sabotage, I'll advise the security forces to look into those areas where these explosions have been taking place. It's been largely the same areas for the individual companies. Gbaramatu for Chevron, and Ogbainbiri-Tebidaba-cloughcreek for agip.
But e no easy sha, that Tebidaba clough creek axis be like death zone, only mosquitoes soldiers go run. No sane human will want to stay there, so out keyboard warriors can imagine what these host communities go through despite the resources being siphoned from under their feet. Any one who is human or has ventured into the Niger Delta interiors will not even think twice to show empathy for these communities.
As regards the bold, I still maintain my stand that the FG is not to be totally blamed, you've to include community Chiefs and excos and the average Niger Deltan youth who has a mindset of receiving crumbs. 1) People complain the FG didn't put in place infrastructures for these people, I agree based on things I saw in my short stay in one of the riverine ijaw communities but how do we explain a situation where youths steal cables that are meant to run electricity into their town? Do we blame the FG for that? 2) Prior to the shut down of whatever is supplying light to the community, I noticed nobody is taking advantage of the almost 24 hours power supply to run businesses that can make money? All I saw were stores selling drinks and some household needs. 3) How do we explain a situation where money that accrue to the community's purse through their dealings with the oil company and related services can not be accounted for? A lot of things go on in that region and I can boldly say, they've not done enough to help themselves but the FG can also not be left out as she has failed in her duties to her citizens. |

Femich18: Rehabilitation Of Akure-Ilesha Road In Ondo/Osun States- 296,760,207? what is there to rehabilitate because that road is 100% pothole free...its one of the best roads in the country
Maintenance Of Osun And Ondo Interstate Road – Ipetu, Ijesa, Ile- Oluji Road- 20,282,452....What are they maintaining? Pardon? When was the last time you went through that route? Cos if we are talking of the same road that leads from FUTA gate to Ilesha, that road is not 100 % pothole free although it can be said to be better relative to some other roads in the country. |
