By Comrade Olufemi Lawson

In the heartlands of the southwestern region lies Ondo State, a State of progressive politics and governance, currently, under the able leadership of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa. Stepping into office nearly six months ago, Governor Aiyedatiwa has swiftly embarked on a journey marked by inclusivity, development, and a resolute commitment to the welfare of all Ondo State citizens.

One of the hallmark characteristics of Governor Aiyedatiwa's administration is its unwavering dedication to engaging with all segments of Ondo's diverse society. From meetings to digital platforms, and political party engagements, the Governor has ensured that the voices and aspirations of the people resonate within the corridors of power. This inclusive approach has been pivotal in shaping his developmental agenda, which prioritizes the needs and aspirations of every community across the state.

Governor Aiyedatiwa's vision for Ondo State is anchored on robust developmental plans that foster sustainable growth and prosperity. Central to this vision is an unprecedented commitment to revitalizing the agricultural sector. Recognizing agriculture as a linchpin of the state's economy, the Governor is implementing innovative policies and initiatives aimed at modernizing farming practices, enhancing productivity, and ensuring food security for all.

In a significant stride towards enhancing judicial efficiency and accessibility to justice, Governor Aiyedatiwa recently approved the construction of a state-of-the-art Judicial complex. This initiative underscores his administration's commitment to strengthening the rule of law and judicial independence in Ondo State.

Furthermore, the Governor's proactive stance on infrastructure development extends beyond the judiciary. Politics / Ten Years Ago, President Jonathan Confab Recommended The New-old National Anthem by aguele(m): 10:01am On Jun 03
TEN YEARS AGO, PRESIDENT JONATHAN CONFAB RECOMMENDED THE NEW-OLD NATIONAL ANTHEM- AJULO

It is with the utmost gravity and reverence that I once again elected to address the concerns surrounding our New-Old National Anthem, "Nigeria We Hail Thee."

I empathize profoundly with the immense economic challenges and the spiraling cost of living that have tried the patience of our people which invariably will make any populace kick against any policy that failed to address these economic concerns.

Nevertheless, I must assert, in the most explicit and unequivocal terms, the adoption of the New-Old National Anthem by the President Bola Tinubu, GCFR and passed into law by the National Assembly in 2024 was ten year ago, recommended by the 2014 National Conference, put together by presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan, this we must note holds profound legal and historical significance.

Let us not forget that our nation, as it stands today, is a construct of British imperialism. While this fact may be unpalatable, it is an inescapable reality that we, as a people, have come to embrace and build upon. Similarly, the adoption of our current national anthem, penned by the British author Lillian Williams, was a considered and purposeful decision made by our forefathers upon the attainment of independence. Similarly, Nigeria as it is, is a comptraction put together by the British Imperialists and most our our institutions till date is part and parcel of such heritage.

The legal and legislative process that led to the recent codification of "Nigeria We Hail Thee" as our national anthem was transparent and inclusive. The fact that our citizens did not voice their concerns during the deliberations in the National Assembly does not diminish the validity of the outcome.

I must also address the concerns raised by our feminist compatriots regarding the lack of explicit mention of "sisterhood" in the anthem. Their observations are indeed valid, and we must acknowledge the crucial role of women in shaping our national identity. The recognition of our "sovereign Motherland" in the first stanza can be seen as a nod to this vital contribution, but we must remain vigilant in our pursuit of greater inclusivity and representation in our national symbols.

As we navigate these challenging times, we need to approach issues with a spirit of constructive dialogue cum civic engagement and civil disobedience.

While the economic hardships we face are undoubtedly immense, we must not lose sight of the historical and legal significance of our national anthem. By working together, in a manner befitting the dignity of our sovereign Motherland, we can strive to create a more just, inclusive, and prosperous Nigeria.

Let us remember that it is our sacred duty to have regard and respect for our State symbols, National Flag, Coat of Arms, Anthem, and Currencies, as enjoined by our laws. It is axiomatic that legislative enactments inherently entail correlative sanctions, which may manifest as punitive measures and/or financial penalties.

In conclusion, I empathize with the challenges faced by our compatriots and the desire to express their dissatisfaction. However, I would encourage a more holistic approach that addresses the underlying economic and social issues, while also considering the historical and symbolic significance of our national anthem. By working together in a spirit of constructive dialogue and civic engagement, we can strive to create a more just, inclusive, and prosperous Nigeria, befitting the grandeur of our sovereign Motherland.

“I have the full meaning of myself when I am unbearably unhappy” - Kafka Franz

Miss my gossip partner. An incredible character with a native intelligence. “Proudly Kalabari” is his motto.

He has this curious way of knowing my moods, sending messages, each appropriate as a balm to my ailing heart.

Hmm, “the wizard from Kalabari”, Like Maria in “Sound of Music”, the fake Kano Chief makes me laugh, he makes me happy. He's lucky I told him I am not gay; I would have advised him to be wearing armour as underwear.

He will bring in groundnuts, this is your brother’s groundnut, ditto dates. He mops and cleans the toilet and floors always.

“The floor tiles will fade quicker," I always tease him.

Sometimes, we get serious and emotional about our “Umbrella." His four-year-old daughter is so fond of him that she calls several times daily. My first date with Dates was with our Imam, a handsome goatee-bearded young man. He has this sweet infectious smile, always plastered on his face. He never cease to talk about our “Umbrella's” kindness to other human beings. It seems he has a soft spot for me.

“Alhaji says, we should always pray for you.” He always reminds me of the Prophet’s pity for one who had wealth before and lost it. That has always been his theme to me. He comes to my room to pray for me, either awake or sleeping.
Saw him sober one night, I asked “What the matter”? He said he remembered his late parents Tears and Rains. Reminds me of Everly Brothers - “I do my crying in the rain”.

Yes, Fishes cry, too. In misery, one can find the definition of oneself. Life has no vacuum. If fate plays its pranks, one becomes a philosopher. One loses all when the mind becomes dead to hope and faith.

Our Mama Pastor too, when around, has a way of lifting souls. She has this unflinching faith in God. Late for me to choose either of the faiths, all roads lead to heaven, wherever it is.

House No 2 is an interesting barrack, full of communal laughter and gossip. When you seek the end, there is always a beginning. House No 2 is where we all stay under our “Umbrella.” I had paid a visit to House No 2, and I knew I had become a financial and psychological wreck in burning bubbles of troubles. Alabo said, “Oga Idowu, you must stay with me here.”

Told him, I can’t, that my cigarette smoking will pollute the compound. He insisted, bordering on pleas for me to stay. He will instruct that the bungalow in the compound be cleaned for me while I hold on and stay in one of the main buildings.

“Sir, you can use any of the cars; there are drivers for your personal use.” Benji eventually became not only my driver, but also my Personal Assistant in House No. 2.
Later, from our healthy gossip mill, I learned he was so sad about how my fortune had nosedived.

He immediately placed me on a monthly allowance among his other compassion for me and my family.

Alabo and I often could not look into each other’s eyes; his compassion for me and my family was becoming embarrassing. From the gossip mill, I learned that hundreds like me are on monthly allowances ranging from five hundred thousand naira upwards. Stories of his benevolence abound in our rumour mills.

One is the story of a widow that called him requesting assistance of five hundred thousand naira to start a business. After the call, his head drooped, and he asked no one what 500k would do. He instructed that 5m be sent to her.

Alabo is an interesting character, sober in compassion, which is at variance to his other character, roaring like a lion in anger, which is at numerous times.

I got tired of admonishing him of these high pitched voice for the sake of his health. It’s the “scar” of that long stay in the jungle. He will never change.

You’ll often see youths coming to House No 2 with envelopes. Later learned, they are CVs looking for employment. He has sponsored hundreds of graduates through both government and private universities.

Alabo has thousands of workers of which the minimum wage is one hundred and fifty thousand naira monthly. Read the history of King Arthur and Robin Hood. Alabo is even a better mould of Robin Hood. Hear him - “Take what belongs to me and rule me! No!”

In house No. 2, I became religious; I do prayers with both Muslims and Christians, though I must confess that I am not a committed and adherent worshipper.

I belong to the Aristotle school of thought, that God is Nature. Then on a turbulent flight, it’s the Pagan that will first shout “Blood of Jesus.”

Alabo’s life has been a necklace of sacrifice from many detentions and exiles, which today has left agony of physical pain on him. Among his unseen pains is the mutilation and slaughter of the children of Gaza.

“To live is to suffer, to survive is to find some meaning in the suffering” - Friedrich Nietzsche

On behalf of Tolu, Tobi, Tomi and Toba, I sincerely wish him and the family more and more glorious years.

Politics / Legal Implication Of New-old National Anthem by aguele(m): 9:08am On Jun 01
As a concerned citizen and legal practitioner, I feel compelled to address a pressing matter.

I have been dismayed by recent commentaries from certain individuals who brazenly boast about their disdain for the New-Old Nigerian National Anthem.

They openly defy the law, refusing to stand, sing, or show respect when the anthem is played.

Let them be reminded that such actions are considered a grave sign of disrespect and can incur serious legal consequences.

The Nigerian National Anthem Act stipulates that failure to stand during the rendition of the anthem is an offense punishable by imprisonment, fine and or both fine and imprisonment

I implore all to take heed and show the necessary respect for our national anthem.

Senator Jimoh Ibrahim Withdraws Ondo APC Primary Case, Thanks Tinubu; Ajulo Praises Legal Team

Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, representing Ondo South Senatorial District, has officially withdrawn his lawsuit challenging the recent All Progressives Congress (APC) primary in Ondo State. The senator attributed his decision to the intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose assurance of commitment to internal party democracy prompted this development.

In a letter addressed to the press, Senator Ibrahim detailed the reasons behind his withdrawal. He noted that President Tinubu personally intervened by meeting with him and assuring improvements in the party's democratic processes. "The suit is now withdrawn due to the intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR. The President called me, had a meeting with me, and assured me that he will, as the leader of the party, improve on the internal democracy within our party," Ibrahim stated.

Further emphasizing his respect and trust in the President, Ibrahim added, "I cannot disobey the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria because the issue I am fighting for is not personal. It is simply to improve internal democracy to which the President has promised improvements. My respect for the President is absolute."

The senator also expressed gratitude for the President's guidance and encouragement during their interactions. "Let me use this opportunity to thank Mr President for the words of wisdom and encouragement during my meeting with him which lasted over one hour and his various interactions with me on the telephone during which he emphasized his commitment to internal democracy over and over again."

Coinciding with President Tinubu's first anniversary in office, Ibrahim described the withdrawal of the lawsuit as a "gift of the 'cake' of the first anniversary."

Reacting to this development, Dr. Kayode Ajulo SAN, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State, lauded the legal team defending Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, INEC & APC.

He praised Chief Wole Olanipekun SAN, Mr. Tayo Oyetibo SAN, Mr Charles Uwensuyi-Edosomwan SAN, and other lawyers for their robust and persuasive defense, which demonstrated Governor Aiyedatiwa's legitimacy as the duly elected APC candidate.

"With unwavering conviction, the defence team presented an unassailable defence, bolstered by meticulous forensic analysis of facts and figures, which unequivocally established Governor Aiyedatiwa as the party's unequivocal choice. This masterful presentation left no room for doubt, utterly demolishing the baseless claims of no Direct Primary Election by the APC in Ondo State, and silencing all opposition with the weight of irrefutable evidence."

Ajulo also commended Senator Ibrahim for his dedication to the party and his touted deference to the President's leadership. He urged all APC members in Ondo State to unify and support Governor Aiyedatiwa in delivering good governance and securing victory in the upcoming November governorship election.

Politics / Setting An Agenda For Civic Engagement Under Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa by aguele(m): 6:57am On May 23
...... by Olufemi Lawson

Since assuming office, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has set a commendable precedent in fostering government-civic engagement. His administration has demonstrated a genuine commitment to nurturing a strong relationship with the people, which has been evident through various meetings and programs that have actively involved a cross-section of Ondo State's populace. This inclusive approach not only builds trust but also ensures that the government remains attuned to the diverse needs and aspirations of its citizens.

Governor Aiyedatiwa's open-door policy is a cornerstone of his administration's success, so far. By maintaining accessibility and encouraging direct dialogue with the people, he has promoted a culture where citizens feel heard and valued. This approach is crucial in a democratic society, as it enhances transparency and accountability, while also fostering a sense of ownership among the people over the decisions that affect their lives.

It ensures that policies are not only top-down but also reflect the grassroots realities and needs. This bottom-up approach is essential in a state as diverse as Ondo, where each community has its own specific challenges and opportunities.

Politics / Niger Delta: The Hunter And The Black Snake by aguele(m): 7:49am On May 15
_By:Esef Atan -Akpaniko_

For generations, under the watchful glow of the moon, elders have woven tales that shape the moral compass of the young. These stories, far from mere entertainment, are cautionary whispers passed down through time. One such tale speaks of a cunning black snake and a prideful hunter.

The moon, a silent witness, bathed the forest floor in silver as the hunter stalked his prey. A rustle in the undergrowth alerted him, and there, coiled beneath a luminous moonbeam, lay a magnificent black snake. The serpent, sensing danger, spoke in a sibilant voice, warning the hunter to leave it be. The hunter, fueled by arrogance and a thirst for conquest, ignored the plea. With a swift strike, he ended the snake's life.
But the tale doesn't end there. The snake, in its final throes, uttered a chilling prophecy. Its flesh, it warned, was not meant for human consumption. The hunter, blinded by greed, dismissed the warning as mere snake talk. He built a fire, roasted the snake, and devoured it with relish.

Later that night, as the moon dipped below the horizon, the hunter doubled over in excruciating pain. A cold, slithering sensation filled his abdomen. He writhed in agony, his screams echoing through the silent forest. The snake, whole and alive, had burrowed from within, reclaiming its stolen form and escaping back into the night.

This cautionary tale serves as a stark reminder: sometimes, what seems like easy prey holds a hidden power. Ignoring warnings, especially from those we deem lesser, can have dire consequences. Last season, the sirens of the mermaids lured the sailors to their watery graves with enchanting songs. Next season, the sailors will sit stoic by the cliffs, deaf to the new lullaby, their hearts hardened by the echoes of past folly. The moonlit whispers, though soft, hold a wisdom worth heeding.

In a gathering reminiscent of the proverbial town and gown, when the Nigerian Economic Summit Group ably led by my good friend Tayo Aduloju decided to gather men and women from all works of life to reflect on the 30 years of existence and founders day and lecture of the NESG.

In doing so decided to host this in an institution renowned for its rich intellectual and academic integrity – The Lagos business school Pan African university, it will appear that this event is planned to be iconic.

From the very rich key note address delivered by @Ifueko Okauru to the very powerful remarks by the Governor of Lagos state @sanwo olu, and a very diverse panel made of up my boss @enase Okonedo the VC of Pan African University , @imo itsueli and others from the NESG board and ably moderated by another boss @Olayinka David west, a deputy dean of the LBS, my decision to join this event physically was worth it.

While I congratulate the NESG and the PIC led by @osasuyi, it is apt to state that with all the challenges the NESG has passed through in the last three decades, Nigeria as a country has fared better with an NESG in place rather than the lack of it. Their independent and bi-partisan approach to issues has helped enrich the conversations around the competitiveness of the Nigerian economy.

Congratulations to @tayo aduloju and the team at the NES and NESG @30.

Politics / Gov. Fubara Presents N3.6b For 3,066 Msmes As He Launches Loan Scheme by aguele(m): 5:04pm On May 03
...Charges BOI on supporting more businesses in Rivers State

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara has presented cheques valued at N3.6 billion to 3,066 micro, small and medium-scale enterprises and 100 companies drawn from the 23 local government areas of the state including non-indugenes.

Governor Fubara made the presentation at the flag-off and commencement of Rivers State Government/BOI N4billion Matching fund loan scheme for SMEs at the Obi Wali International Conference Centre, Port Harcourt on Friday.

The governor pointed out that it could only be imagined the economic value and impact the over 3000 beneficiary MSMEs will add to the positive economic dynamics of the State and the local government areas in terms of gross domestic product, increased tax returns, employment creation, income distribution and production of goods and services.

Governor Fubara noted that credit support to the small businesses is the best approach to entrepreneurial success and enabler of economic prosperity of the people.

He restated his passion for businesses in the state especially the small ones, which he saw on assumption of office that they were struggling and some closed down due to lack of access to credit, which only banks can provide at cut throat interest rates.

While pointing out that as a State there cannot be economic growth without stimulating business activities to create wealth and jobs through policies that will engender greater public access to credit and financial inclusion, the governor also emphasised that MSMEs are well known as critical drivers of inclusive economic growth and development.

"By empowering our people to cultivate available economic opportunities, access to credit is a powerful tool for achieving financial security and prosperity."

"This was why we allocated substantial funds in our 2024 budget to support entrepreneurial development and growth of small and medium-scale businesses in the State."

"To translate the budgetary provisions to reality, we agreed with the BOI to jointly set up a four-billion-naira (N4,000,000,000.00) naira matching loan fund with both parties contributing two billion (N2,000,000,000.00) each to the Fund, which has since been established and ready for disbursement to the beneficiaries."

Governor Fubara therefore charged the Bank of Industry to grant more credit opportunities and business support funds to more Rivers entrepreneurs to establish and expand their businesses.

He implored the beneficiary MSMEs to use the opportunity provided by the loan to grow their businesses, expand into new ventures, hire more hands, and even aspire to become bigger in your businesses.

"It is important to make it clear that this is a very liberal loan, not given as a charity, and therefore, must be paid back so that some others, including your relations, friends, neighbours, and even your enemies can also access it to fund their businesses because the Fund belongs to all."

The governor commended the Bank of Industry and the management of the Rivers State Microfinance Agency for consummating the financial partnership arrangement and expressed satisfaction with the professional approach in disbursing the loan, believing even more strongly that the potential outcome will be greater to further strengthen and cultivate it for the benefit of the people of Rivers State.

He also charged the management of RIMA to monitor the progress of the beneficiaries in their businesses and ensure a 100 per cent recovery of the loans to guarantee the sustainability of the programme

"I assure you that I will continue to support the scheme to enable Rivers people to take control of their financial circumstances and ensure that they overcome the present state of despair to economic security for themselves and their families."

Earlier, the Managing Director of Rivers State Microfinance Agency, Pastor Jonathan Tobin applauded the governor for initiating the programme which is intended to "Touch lives and Create Wealth" for Rivers people.

He noted that due to the passion of the governor towards revamping the small and medium-scale businesses in the state the governor insisted on a single digit interest rate on the loan scheme which amounts to 7.5% per annum on a reducing balance.

On his part, the Managing Director of Bank of Industry, Dr. Olasupo Olusi, thanked the governor for the opportunity to be part of the scheme and assured that the Bank is ever disposed to further drive the socioeconomic development of the state, by supporting to create jobs for the teeming youths in order to check insecurity and improve the state's internally generated revenue.

On friendship:
No matter how friendly you are to the wife of a close friend, always learn to set boundaries around issues for discussion. For instance, don’t tell her, her husband is a drunkard, she already knows that, don’t say her husband is jobless, that is a direct attack on her family and it shows how insensitive you are, don’t say her husband is a womanizer, it’ an exhibition of your hatred for that family.

Do not reinforce what she probably already knows or suspicious of her husband. Doing this will amount to destroying a home and confirmation to the woman that you are a betrayal of a supposed solid relationship.

Remember the words of Jesus in Mathew 26:24 on what awaits betrayals of friendship.

- The grace of God, the soundness of the mind, independent mindedness, and intellectual freedom, with these a man has a pathway towards total self-liberation.

---------------

- The truth is blind to its audience, does not need to be memorized, it comes with the mind, soul and heart, the truth is a package, its selfless, not tied to a reward, at least not a priority, the truth is free albeit in its entirety.

--------------
- When a society finds more happiness in dancing to the relics of its music rather than reflect on the message, that is a red flag towards a slide to chaos, indifference to moral virtues and a descent to a societal collapse.

---------------
- When the character of a man driven by his own principles only appeals to you when its of value to you and you resent the same principled- driven character when it is in opposition to your future stand on issues, it would appear then that you are a user and not a fair minded personality.

The beautiful nature of data is that it reveals the size of a problem and exposes the gap required to address the issue at stake. Data is not only the key to solving societal problems but also the supreme ‘spirit’ that drives development planning across the modern world

------------

- Let my death come from any other source but not from envying my neighbor, or malice towards my fellow being, hatred and jealousy towards any other God’s creation, for my blessings cometh not through the heaviness of my heart but through the freedom of my soul and embrace of love to all.

--------------

- A man’s dignity is diminished when he finds himself in a community of those who diminishes his value, but the same man’s dignity suddenly becomes magnified and heroic, a superman when he finds himself in the middle of those who value his talents, his intellect, and innate ability. Could this be another form of environmental determinism?

-------------

- Don’t pity men when they are down, don’t console me when Iam inconsolable, rather create an environment that will lift my soul and bring me closer to my spirituality.

--------------

- I have seen more of poverty (it humbles me anyway) I have tasted power, I have seen crowd amassing towards me, I have seen loneliness (it makes me reflect anyway) in all these I remain committed to my principles and beliefs and the strength of God has been sufficient for me.

-------------

- Knowledge should come with humility, wealth should come with compassion, poverty should be accompanied with equanimity, spirituality should come with piety, power should be accompanied with consideration. In all these, time is the best revealer of all secrets.

------------

- I have never seen a medicine so potent as time, time is created by God and yet with technology and innovation, time is still the greatest and irreplaceable creation of God.

Promoting the Respectful Handling of Naira Currency: Upholding the CBN Act and Extant Laws

Introduction:
The Nigerian Naira, as the official currency of Nigeria, holds significant value and importance in our everyday lives. It is our responsibility as responsible citizens to understand and adhere to the guidelines and laws established by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) concerning the proper handling and respect for Naira currency. By doing so, we contribute to the preservation of the currency's integrity, durability, and widespread acceptance. This article aims to emphasize the importance of respecting and handling Naira currency in accordance with the CBN Act and other relevant laws.

1. Understanding the CBN Act:
The CBN Act serves as the legal framework governing the regulation and management of Nigeria's monetary system. It provides guidelines and regulations that safeguard the integrity and value of the Naira currency. Sections 20 and 21 of the CBN Act specifically outline the responsibilities of individuals in handling and preserving Naira banknotes.

2. Prohibition of Defacing and Mutilating Naira Currency:
The CBN Act strictly prohibits defacing, mutilating, or tampering with Naira banknotes. This includes actions such as writing, tearing, stapling, or intentionally damaging the currency. Engaging in such practices not only devalues the currency but also undermines trust and confidence in its authenticity.

3. Consequences and Legal Ramifications:
Individuals found guilty of defacing or mutilating Naira currency may face legal consequences as stipulated by the CBN Act. Penalties may include fines and imprisonment, which are determined based on the severity of the offense and the discretion of the court. It is crucial to recognize that these consequences are in place to protect the integrity and sanctity of the Naira currency.

4. Proper Handling Practices:
Respecting Naira currency involves adopting responsible handling practices. The CBN recommends the following guidelines:
a. Handle with Clean Hands: Ensure your hands are clean to prevent transferring dirt or oils onto the banknotes.
b. Avoid Folding and Crumpling: Handle banknotes gently, avoiding excessive folding or crumpling that may lead to damage.
c. Store in Clean and Dry Conditions: Preserve the quality of Naira banknotes by storing them in clean and dry environments, protecting them from moisture or other damaging factors.
d. Use Currency Holders or Wallets: Utilize currency holders or wallets to safeguard banknotes from wear and tear.
e. Educate Others: Spread awareness about the proper handling and respect for Naira currency, encouraging others to follow the guidelines set forth by the CBN.

5. Promoting a Culture of Respect:
Embracing a culture of respect for Naira currency contributes to a stronger economy and a sense of national pride. Upholding the CBN Act and other relevant laws demonstrates our commitment to preserving the value and integrity of our currency, thereby bolstering public trust and confidence in the Nigerian financial system.

Additional Examples of Legal Consequences for Defacing Naira Currency:
1. Monetary Fines: Individuals found guilty of defacing or mutilating Naira currency may be subject to monetary fines determined by the court. The specific amount of the fine depends on factors such as the severity of the offense and the court's discretion.

2. Imprisonment: In addition to fines, the court may impose a prison sentence as a penalty for defacing Naira currency. The length of imprisonment varies based on the nature and extent of the offense, as well as other factors considered by the court.

3. Community Service: As an alternative or in addition to fines and imprisonment, the court may order individuals to perform community service as a means of reparation for defacing Naira currency. Community service can involve activities that benefit the community and raise awareness about the importance of respecting the currency.

4. Criminal Record: Being found guilty of defacing Naira currency can result in a criminal record, which can have long-term implications for employment prospects and personal reputation.

5. Legal Expenses: Individuals accused of defacing Naira currency may also incur legal expenses related to hiring legal representation and court proceedings. These expenses can add financial burdens in addition to fines or other penalties imposed by the court.

It is important to note that the specific legal consequences for defacing Naira currency can vary depending on the circumstances of each case, the jurisdiction, and the discretion of the court. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act provides the framework for addressing such offenses, and the enforcement and application of penalties lie within the jurisdiction of the judicial system.

Conclusion:
Respecting and handling Naira currency in accordance with the CBN Act and extant laws is not only a legal obligation but also a civic responsibility. By adhering to the guidelines provided by the CBN, we contribute to the longevity, acceptance, and integrity of the Naira currency. Let us foster a culture of respect for our national currency, recognizing that its preservation is vital for the prosperity and stability of our nation.

Travel / *the Crucial Need To Rally Behind Allen Onyema's Air Peace by aguele(m): 8:07pm On Apr 03
By Philip Agbese

As a concerned citizen deeply invested in our nation’s economic prosperity, I find it imperative to shed light on the paramount importance of rallying behind Allen Onyema and recognising the aviation sector as a pivotal gateway to our much-needed economic breakthrough.

Meanwhile, the views expressed in this piece are not representative of the parliament, but rather reflect the fervent belief in the necessity of awakening the sleeping giant that is our aviation industry. It is a great concern to me. Being a deep cut in my heart, and in the heart of every other patriotic citizen, it is imperative that such charades done by foreign countries need to be addressed as soon as possible.

It is commendable to note that, the central bank governor has been so helpful in supporting our indigenous flight carriers to start international operations, in a bid to save money for the country. But unfortunately, foreign nations aren’t allowing us into their country as much as a small fraction are being permitted into ours. Nigerians have been spending more money than any other country for the same distance miles of flight.

In the last 25 years, people from South Africa have been paying a lesser fee for a 9hrs flight to London in comparison to Nigeria’s 6hrs flight to the same London. It’s such a despicable act and a conscious wickedness of the highest order.

The current state of Nigerian aviation is unacceptable. Foreign airlines exploit us to the detriment of our economy. They enjoy a disproportionate number of flights into Nigeria while stifling our own airlines’ access to their markets. This is economic sabotage, plain and simple, and these are the reasons behind the fight for Justice by Allen Onyema; the chief executive officer of Air Peace.

Turning our attention to the indispensable task of bolstering Allen Onyema as a national asset, it is imperative to draw lessons from his unwavering patriotism and dedication, particularly during the challenging times brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Mr. Onyema’s selfless efforts to evacuate our citizens from foreign countries exemplify his commitment to the well-being of our people and the nation at large.

He flew to these locations to evacuate stranded Nigerians. It's time for a collective response. We must stand tall and reclaim our economic sovereignty. Supporting Allen Onyema, the visionary behind Air Peace, is the first crucial step.

Furthermore, it is essential to commend Minister Festus Keyamo for his remarkable achievements in recent times, which unequivocally demonstrate that there are no limits to our success when provided with a conducive environment. We, like his mentors, know Keyamo’s tenacity and dedication. His commendable stewardship at the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace has not only been a testament to his capabilities but has also served as an inspiration to many who recognize his unwavering dedication to the advancement of our aviation sector.

Minister Keyamo has also been a strengthening voice in this fight for more recognition of indigenous flight, just like its foreign counterpart. During his facility tour of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo spoke about the dilemma in BASA agreements, saying that if the foreign airlines' operations in Nigeria are stopped, air travellers would suffer; but foreign airlines are enjoying the frequencies in Nigeria which they cannot give to Nigerian airlines. Keyamo insisted that there must be a midway where the foreign airlines would be accommodated as well as also create opportunities for domestic carriers.

In addition, it is crucial to address the detrimental impact of foreign airlines on our citizens and our economy. These entities not only pose a threat to our national interests but also perpetuate economic sabotage, thereby necessitating a critical examination of their actions and the need to hold them accountable for their exploitative practices.

Arik Air once battled the British airport authorities when they refused to grant it the Abuja-London route and insisted that the Nigerian airline must pay for slots. But British Airways did not do the same in its operations from London to Lagos and from London to Abuja, same as UK-based Virgin Atlantic Airways, which does not pay for slots in its London-Lagos operations. Arik Air was forced to pay for slots and while the two British Airlines operated 21 flights a week, Arik Air was operating about four flights a week.

The Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) which strengthens countries’ aviation relationships, and helps in the repartition of funds, and its disbursity, has been disrespected, and ridiculed by these foreign countries. They didn’t respect the BASA they signed with Nigeria. One of the countries from the Middle East is doing up to 21 frequency weekly into Nigeria, and we had to fight for it, but just one was granted to Air Peace. UK has 21 frequencies in Nigeria, while Nigeria has none in the UK. They even dare to ask us to stop requesting any and will get to us whenever they are ready.

There have been numerous cases where these foreign countries employ diverse dirty tricks to delay our local carrier flights. They first use Immigration; then they insist on searching every piece of luggage in the aircraft, just to delay the flights so that it would lose its on-time performance record.

Such could be likened to an incident that happened about two years ago when Air Peace started flight service to Sharjah. UAE inspectors at the airport started a long search that culminated in just the replacement of a small bulb in the aircraft. Consequently, the flight was delayed for hours. These evil tactics have always been perpetuated by foreign countries just to discredit our indigenous flights, and further discourage citizens from using them.

The question we are asking the concerned bodies in Nigeria is, “Why should Nigerians be paying N2.3 million naira for economy tickets to board foreign airlines to London, while our indigenous airlines like Air Peace are willing to charge N500,000 for the same?” Why should we be treated unjustly, while they get good treatment from us?

The absurdity of this boring drama needs to stop, and that is why we need to give our unwavering support to the main face (Allen Onyema) behind this struggle because he deserves it. Allen Onyema can be easily described as:

A Champion of Nigerian Aviation: Air Peace, under his leadership, has become a symbol of national pride. It’s a vibrant, homegrown airline that creates jobs, boosts tourism, and challenges the dominance of foreign carriers.

A Committed Patriot: Onyema prioritizes Nigerians. He has consistently offered competitive fares, making travel more accessible to our citizens. During the pandemic, he demonstrated his commitment by evacuating Nigerians free of charge.

A Catalyst for Economic Growth: A thriving domestic airline industry fosters economic diversification. Air Peace creates a ripple effect, stimulating related sectors like hospitality, tourism, and logistics.

However, it is worthy of note to state that Allen Onyema's fight isn’t just for Air Peace alone, but it’s for all of Nigeria’s domestic carriers. It is a fight for every one of us to pick up, and this is where we, the citizens, come in.

As a concerned patriotic citizen, I believe here are a few things we can do to support Allen Onyema and the Nigerian aviation sector:

Public Advocacy: This will help to raise awareness about the lopsided practices of foreign airlines. Let your voice be heard through social media, letters to the editor, and public discussions.

Support Domestic Travel: We need to choose to fly Nigerian airlines whenever possible. Rich Nigerians and top officials should understand that a preference for patronizing foreign airlines over domestic carriers on international routes is a sabotage to our economy. Irrespective of our position or office, our hardened support in patronizing our own will send a powerful message and strengthen our domestic carriers.

Demand Fair Practices: We need to urge the government to create a level playing field for Nigerian airlines. Advocate for policies that encourage competition and protect our national interests.

By uniting behind Allen Onyema and Air Peace, we can achieve several things:

Economic Empowerment: A robust domestic aviation sector fuels economic growth and job creation. It positions Nigeria as a regional aviation hub, attracting investment and foreign exchange.

National Pride: Supporting a homegrown success story like Air Peace fosters a sense of national pride. It demonstrates our ability to compete on the global stage.

Global Influence: A strong Nigerian aviation industry strengthens our position in international negotiations. We can demand fairer treatment for our airlines and citizens.

The time has come to put an end to the friendly sabotage of our economy. We can’t keep enriching other people’s economies at the expense of the growth of our economy. It is business, and they should understand that they need us as much as we need them.

The time has come for a unified and concerted effort to rectify the prevailing challenges within our aviation sector, with a particular emphasis on extending our support to Allen Onyema. This is an opportune moment for collective action, and it is incumbent upon us to seize the momentum and embark on a transformative journey toward a more vibrant and resilient aviation industry that reflects the true potential of our nation. It’s time for us to awaken the sleeping giant, claim our rightful place in the global aviation sector, and unlock the path toward economic prosperity.

By doing so, we can collectively endeavour to rectify the existing inadequacies and pave the way for a more robust and prosperous aviation industry that serves the best interests of our nation. This is the time to get it right, and starting with Allen Onyema will be apt. This is a call to action and sustained commitment. Let’s make Nigeria soar!

Agbese MHR, the Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, writes from Abuja.

Politics / Re: Aiyedatiwa Disowns 273 Aides Appointed By Commissioner by aguele(m): 5:57am On Apr 03
My attention has been drawn to a news story with the above headline published in The Nation newspaper and reproduced by some online media outlets on Tuesday, April 2, 2024.

The line credited to me in the story to the effect that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa did not approve the appointment of aides made by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, SAN, was a fabrication of the author of the story.

That statement did not emanate from me and the author of the original story has since admitted his error, apologised and promised to do a retraction.

For clarification, the Attorney General only appointed those lawyers, including some notable Senior Advocates of Nigeria, as honorary advisers to assist him in promoting various reforms in the judiciary in Ondo State.

The said lawyers are not expected to receive any financial remuneration or employment advantages from the Ondo State government.

Most of the lawyers who have been appointed are renowned, trusted and experienced lawyers and jurists who have willingly decided to contribute their services to Ondo State as a gesture of goodwill.

THE 8 POINT REFORMATIVE AGENDA OF THE OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL AND COMMISSIONER FOR JUSTICE

In view of the functions of the office of the Attorney General of a State donated by sections 195 and 211 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999) as amended, together with all the stakeholders, we shall work within an 8-point performative agenda to recalibrate the law and Justice sector in Ondo State for a renewed hope and in line with the mission and vision of His Excellency, Hon. These agenda will inform the objectives and strategies the office of the Honourable Attorney General of Ondo State and the Ministry of Justice will pursue as well as performance indicators to measure our progress while in office.

Particularly, the Office of People Defender will be established with the mandate to safeguard the fundamental human rights and freedom of the vulnerable and disadvantaged groups through a strong, vibrant, and high-quality pro bono service in collaboration with stakeholders nationally and internationally.

Politics / International Community, Partners Proud Of NASS - Reps Deputy Spokesman by aguele(m): 2:50pm On Mar 30
The Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese, says the country's legislative arm is now the toast of the international community and development partners around the world.

Agbese said the House's focus on transparency, citizen participation, and accountability has made other nations stand up and take notice.

The Ado/ Okpokwu/ Ogbadibo Federal Constituency member spoke to reporters on arriving in Nigeria from South Africa after the recently concluded Extraordinary Session of the Pan-African Parliament.

Assessing the impact of the Rt Hon Tajudeen Abbas-led leadership, the lawmaker said the House has made access to legislative information easy.

According to him, mechanisms for public participation and accountability have been put on the ground, thus enhancing an open, trusting relationship with citizens.

While holding the executive accountable, he added that the House of Reps has proactively made information related to parliamentary operations, details of lawmakers, meeting agendas, bills, debates, and voting records available.

Agbese said the perception of the country's legislature is changing in the international community and can only get better.

He said this has further been highlighted at the 148th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly where the National Assembly was commended for its diplomatic efforts.

"At the just concluded Pan-African Parliament's extraordinary congress, I was surprised to know about what my fellow African lawmakers think about Nigeria," he said.

"From my interactions with many, the Nigerian House of Representatives is now highly rated for its transparency, citizen participation, and accountability.

"There seems to be greater awareness about the leadership of the House led by the Rt Hon Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Ph.D. African nations are paying attention to us.

"This is not rocket science. The House has taken some drastic steps such as consultations and public hearings that give citizens opportunities to provide feedback and demonstrate their interests.

"The House has also strengthened communication between legislators and their constituents and given opportunities for citizens, especially vulnerable groups, to give input.

" We are also aware of how well civil society groups have been carried along throughout the legislative processes. In all, Nigerians should be proud and I believe they are".

Commissioner for Justice Clarifies Misrepresentation and Calls for Integrity in Political Discourse

When I convened my inaugural meeting with the lawyers at the Ministry of Justice after my inauguration, I passionately discussed numerous visionary ideas, including a reformative agenda to propel the ministry forward.

One of the proposals I ardently advocated for was the mandatory court appearance of all lawyers who have been called to the bar, regardless of their department. It came to my attention that while all lawyers in the ministry received an allowance for their legal robes, only those in the Department of Civil Litigation and the Department of Public Prosecutions were actively involved in courtroom proceedings. I emphasized that this innovative approach would effectively equip lawyers for courtroom practice at all times.

Furthermore, I expressed my sincere preference for the esteemed title of "State Attorney" over the more commonly used designation of "State Counsel." I proposed that we embrace the title of "State Attorney" to better align with my personal inclination, stemming from my career's start as a Federal Attorney at the Federal Ministry of Justice, Abuja under Chief Bola Ige, SAN, former Attorney General of the Federation.

During the weekend, I came across a photograph capturing a moment when I warmly shook hands with one of the Chief Campaigners of His Excellency Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa. Notably, the background of the photo featured a banner extending congratulations to me as the newly appointed Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State.

Regrettably, an error was made in the caption, mistakenly referring to me as "Anthony General" instead of "Attorney General."

The misguided use of the name "Anthony" on the banner sparked discussions regarding the photo. However, it is important for me to clarify that at the time the picture was taken, I commended the individual presenting the banner, the Convener of Lucky Aiyedatiwa Campaign Organisation Foot Soldiers, Hon. Dipo Okeyomi, also known as Carry-Go, in the presence of other party stalwarts for accurately capturing the title. This is significant, as many individuals often mistakenly refer to the title as "Commissioner of Justice" rather than "Commissioner for Justice." Additionally, I took the opportunity to highlight that apart from being a Commissioner for Justice, I hold the honourable position of Attorney General, which unfortunately was not mentioned on the banner.

Consequently, I am now concerned about the existence of another version of the picture circulating, where the name "Anthony General" in black colour has been added to generate content and create a dramatic impact.

While it is commonly said that all is fair in politics, I firmly believe that this particular game has been taken too far. Such insinuations should not be made, as they are detrimental in every aspect.

Beyond the aforementioned incident, I have recently observed with deep regret how political rivalries have driven many individuals to engage in various acts with potential criminal liabilities. I earnestly pray that such actions cease immediately.
