The Coalition of Human Rights Groups in Nigeria (CHRGN) has commended President Bola Tinubu for reappointing Mohammed Goni Alkali as the MD/ CEO of the North East Development Commission (NEDC).

In a statement signed by its President, Pastor Israel Abiodun, the group said this attests to Alkali antecedents as a performer.

Abiodun said the development shows that the current administration recognises excellence and rewards hard work, integrity, and accountability.

According to him, it was no surprise that Alkali was considered for a second term due to his groundbreaking achievements in the agency.

Describing the MD/ CEO as a trailblazer, reformer, and model for public officials, Abiodun said the NEDC performed way beyond expectations in the last four years.

“The establishment of the North East Development Commission (NEDC) in October 2017 by President Muhammadu Buhari was to lead the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the North Eastern region of Nigeria," he said.

"Among other things, the agency is to receive and manage funds from allocation of the Federal Account and international donors for the settlement, rehabilitation, and reconstruction of roads, houses and business premises of victims of insurgency as well as tackling menace of poverty, illiteracy level, ecological problems and any other related environmental or developmental challenges in the North-East states

"You will agree with us that the said mandate has been achieved in so many ways, thanks to Mohammed Goni. He came with a solid blueprint to transform the region from something of a wilderness into a flourishing land. Thousands of displaced persons have returned home. Infrastructures have received a facelift too.

“This much was achieved due to the transparency and accountability entrenched in the Commission by Goni. Northeast resources have benefited the entire people of the region and not some selfish bunch".

Abiodun explained that under the current leadership, the NEDC strategically assessed, reviewed, and implemented key crucial programs that drastically ameliorated the poverty matrix in the North-East Region.

He outlined some of the activities including the development of the North-East Stabilisation and Development Master Plan (NESDMP), an all-inclusive roadmap for the Reconciliation, Rehabilitation, Reactivation, Replacement, Reconstruction, Resettlement, Renewal, Regeneration, Redevelopment, and Sustainable Growth of the North-East Zone.

The group added that it is only logical to allow Goni to complete the good work he started.

He added: "Under Alkali, NEDC carried out various interventions with zeal, patriotic passion, and commitment to bring succor to the people.

"The MD/CEO's ability to coordinate, harmonize, and oversee the Commission brought success to many intervention and initiative programs for the Northeastern States through his effective, top, and outstanding managerial skills.

“We can boldly say his achievements are projects everywhere apart from human and agricultural interventions there are physical projects for all to see. We believe that soon the North East will be completely restored to not just its former glory, but better than it once was.

"Since returning to the office, the Northeast is radiating with smiles as residents know that the projects begun by Alkali will be completed".

The South-East Revival Group has congratulated the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon. Benjamin Kalu, for another victory at the National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.

In a statement signed by its President, Mazi Kennedy Osita, the group described Kalu's mandate as divine and can never be stolen by anyone.

In the last two days, the Tribunal struck out two petitions by the Action Alliance (AA) and Labour Party challenging the Deputy Speaker's election for Bende Federal Constituency.

Osita said Thursday's case was unique especially after the AA candidate Ifeanyi Igbokwe had distanced himself from the suit, saying he never filed or authorized anyone to initiate any legal action against Kalu.

Mazi Osita said this all but confirms that there are individuals who have sworn to bring the Deputy Speaker down at all costs.

He noted that besides their fake court case, they have gone as far as blackmailing the former Spokesman of the House of the Reps in a bid to discredit him in the eyes of Nigerians.

But Osita said that Rt Hon. Kalu, in his characteristics manner, has remained focused on his promises to his constituency and commitment to Nigerians.

He reckons that the two judgments have not only validated Kalu's victory but affirmed that he is God's choice to lead his people at this time to champion a new era for the Igbo nation.

"We welcome the decision of the Tribunal to strike out a non-existing suit against the Deputy Speaker. This is proof of God's grace," Osita said.

"It is true that some elements of darkness are against Kalu, the light of the Igbo nation. We are aware that they resorted to different gimmicks to tarnish his reputation. But the Deputy Speaker is a man on a mission who can't be stopped.

"Being the highest-ranking Igbo man in government, some persons are not happy. What exactly are Kalu's crimes?

"This a man who has changed the landscape of politics in the South-East. He is kind, generous, and a lover of his people. Kalu oozes excellence, capacity, and hard work.

"He believes in the unity of the nation and sees every Nigerian as his brother. This is the sort of leader we need in our land if we must make progress".

Osita, therefore, urged the Deputy Speaker to forgive his detractors and show them love as he has always done.

While noting that Kalu is a man of peace, he further charged the lawmaker not to change his good ways.

"As a Christian and father, we wish to beg the DSP to embrace all his detractors. Indeed, they are still struggling with the new glory that God has brought upon the South East.

"Rt Hon. Kalu is not known as the Ijele of Igboland for nothing and that is why we urge him to stay true to the title as his reign is bringing about reconciliation between the Igbos and the rest of the country. Something that eluded the Igbo nation since after the civil war.

"On this note, we wish to emphasize that nothing supersedes peace, unity, and love. If our region must grow, we must support each other. Kalu needs all of that right now".

Osita, however, advised "enemies of Igboland" hell-bent on frustrating Kalu to repent immediately.

Jeremy Bentham once said, “The greatest happiness of the greatest number is the foundation of morals and legislation.”

In this wise, one can easily deduced that, a nation can never be worth being called a nation, and will never be complete until democracy becomes power to make law given to the people by the people for the people.

Hon Tajudeen Abbas has taken on the monumental task of redefining democracy in Nigeria and he has already made significant strides in achieving this goal. Since his election, he has made it a priority to clean up the corruption and inefficiency that has plagued the parliament for years.

One of Abbas’s first acts as Speaker was to introduce a new code of conduct for lawmakers. This code prohibits lawmakers from accepting gifts from lobbyists or engaging in any other corrupt practices. Abbas has also cracked down on absenteeism, and he has made it clear that he will not tolerate any wrongdoing.

In relation to Montesquieu quote which says, “A good parliament is the foundation of a good government”, Abass multiplicity of splendor in the 10th assembly has stirred up a remarkable intellect which has led to a magnificent increase in Nigeria’s helm of progressive-democracy.

Abass is a passionate and dedicated politician. He is also a skilled orator and a shrewd negotiator who is not afraid to speak his mind, even when it is unpopular.

As a great parliamentarian, John Locke, once said, “The people are the masters, and the parliament is their servant.” Undoubtedly affirming to this, Abass has been committed to using his position in the House of Representatives to fight for the rights of the people and to make Nigeria a better place.

In showing his commitment to economic development and the understanding that democracy cannot work if people are not able to meet their basic needs, he has been working to ensure that the House of Representatives passes laws and policies that promote economic growth and development. He has also been a vocal advocate for the rights of workers and has taken steps to ensure that they are treated fairly.

His sincerity and honesty have had a profound impact on the parliament. He has been a vocal advocate for the people, consistently pushing for reforms that benefit the citizens. The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Odo Ape ward, Kabba/Bunu local government area of Kogi state, Obaganye Isaac, has alerted the public about a fake letter circulating on social media which claimed Hon. Duro Meseko, has been suspended from the party.

The ward Chairperson of the APC, in a disclaimer he issued on Thursday described the letter as an unholy lie peddled by people seeking attention.

“I hereby state with authority that Hon. Duro Meseko was never and has never been suspended from the party in his ward. The general public and members of our great party should disregard the information as it is a blatant lie and misleading,” Mr Obaganye Isaac stated in the disclaimer.

He described Meseko as a true party man and a great supporter of a united party in the ward.

He further said that his signature was forged by the state governor, Yahaya Bello due to his desperation.

“The ward entire Exco never signed any letter of expulsion nor sat for any meeting regarding same.

“ Hon Duro is still a serving member of Kogi state assembly commission till date and I urge members of our party to remain focused and concentrate on our campaigns,” he added.

The Oduduwa Citizens Action for Progress (OCAP) has described the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon. Benjamin Kalu, as a symbol of national unity.

Speaking at a parley on Tuesday in Lagos, the President of the group, Comrade Kolawole Abe, said Rt Hon. Kalu has already proven his mettle in the 10th National Assembly.

Abe was reacting to the news of the dismissal of the petition challenging Kalu's victory in the Bende Federal Constituency election.

The Oduduwa youth leader said the Deputy Speaker's victory has widely settled the anxiety of the Yoruba nation who have found Kalu as a dependable ally and compatriot.

According to Abe, the emergence of the Abia lawmaker as Deputy Speaker initially created panic owing to his modest lifestyle and calm demeanor.

He said there was skepticism and discontent among some southwest elites over President Bola Tinubu's insistence on Kalu, having just spent one term in the parliament.

However, Abe reckons that the Deputy Speaker has silenced these critics, including his group, and justified the President's trust with his sterling performance so far.

Beneath his gentle and easygoing traits, Abe said there is a passionate Nigerian with a burning desire to make things right.

He added that the Deputy Speaker is vibrant, charismatic, and vocal when it comes to issues of national interest.

"When the ruling party announced its decision on the leadership of the 10th National Assembly, a lot of us from the southwest didn't quite know about Rt Hon. Kalu," he said.

"Naturally, there were doubts. Many of our elites felt the position should come to the southwest and not an Igbo man. We were wrong.

"As a visionary leader that he has been for almost all his life, President Tinubu saw something unique in Kalu. Thank God, he didn't succumb to pressure.

"Today, the Deputy Speaker has repaid the faith by performing excellently. That the 10th House of Reps is already breaking records is down to this articulate, capable, and talented young man.

"But what has struck us the most is his acceptability across the nation. For that to happen, Kalu is doing something right.

"We have discovered that he is a unifier, peace lover, and nation-builder. He epitomizes friendship, loyalty, and dedication."

Comrade Abe, therefore, described Kalu as the perfect example of what is expected from southeast leaders.

He said if Igbo elites can embrace others with love not minding their religion or ethnic affiliations, the country would witness more peace and economic prosperity.

Abe said the little they have known about the Deputy Speaker shows that he has something Igbo leaders must emulate going forward.

"We know that leadership is from God but we need each other to build a prosperous nation," he added.

"For the Igbo presidency to come to reality, the southeast would need more detribalized and unsentimental sons and daughters like Kalu.

"Similar to President Tinubu, he believes in making friends across the country, collaborating with everyone irrespective of age, religion or tribe."

Oil theft and pipeline vandalism have been a major issue in Nigeria's oil sector for many years, defying government and security measures. The Niger Delta region in Nigeria has been particularly affected by this issue. The theft and vandalism of oil pipelines have had significant economic implications for the country, which is Africa's largest economy. This article aims to critically examine the causes and implications of oil theft in Nigeria, its ruinous effects on the economy, efforts of past administration to cure the tumour and how President Bola Ahmed Tinubu can deescalate the raging fire and turn the tide for the good of the country and its people.
Tinubu in his Renewed Hope Agenda had pledged to address oil theft and pipeline vandalism and substantially grow oil and gas production as well as eliminate PMS Subsidy- a promise he kept on Inauguration Day. Now that he wears the crown of rulership and holds the sceptre of authority, he is very much well placed to halt the bleeding occasioned by the evil of pipeline vandalism and oil theft which will ensure that what now goes into the private pockets of oil cartels and criminal gangs in the Niger Delta and their international collaborators is taken back and redirected into the nation’s coffers to drive the economic aspects of his renewed hope agenda. One thing must be made clear: as the drive to diversify the economy and reap the benefits inherent in the digital ecosystem and blue economy, the economic survival of the country still lies in the oil oozing out of the Niger Delta, and any other inland discovery of large deposits of hydrocarbons and their exploration and production.
Finally, this writer will make recommendations on what needs be done at community, state, and federal government levels to stem the tide of oil theft and pipeline vandalism and accrual of much needed foreign exchange into the federal coffers for the attainment of the Renewed Hope of the present administration.
Causes and Implications of oil theft in Nigeria: Oil theft in Nigeria has been caused by various factors, including political sabotage, organized crime, corruption, and poverty. The Niger Delta region, which is the main oil-producing region in Nigeria, has been particularly affected by this issue. The theft and vandalism of oil pipelines have had gargantuan economic, political and social implications for the country, which is Africa's largest economy. For instance, in 2021, crude oil accounted for 41 per cent of the total federal government revenue, translating to N4.34 trillion ($10.1 billion) in earnings into the Federation account.
However, the theft of oil has led to a significant loss of revenue for the government, which continues to plague the country's economic growth and development. Specific cases of oil theft in Nigeria: In 2015-2016, oil theft, illegal bunkering, and pipeline vandalism led to a loss of $41.9 billion, which is equivalent to 5.8 per cent of Nigeria's GDP. In 2019, the defunct Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) reported that it lost 22.6 million barrels of crude oil, which is equivalent to $1.35 billion, due to pipeline vandalism and oil theft. In 2020, the NNPC reported that it lost 1.7billion liters of petrol, which is equivalent to $1.1 billion, due to pipeline vandalism and oil theft. In 2021, the NNPC reported that it lost 60.4 million liters of petrol, which is equivalent to $39.4 million, due to pipeline vandalism and oil theft. In 2022, the NNPC uncovered an illegal oil connection from Dorados Terminal that had been operated for nine years, leading to a colossal loss of revenue for the government. In 2022, the country's crude output in August averaged 972,394 bpd, a multi-decade low, due to pipeline vandalism and oil theft. The Federal Government has intensified its crackdown on oil thieves and pipeline vandals. The government has increased surveillance and security measures around oil pipelines and installations. The latest of such efforts being the engagement of a former militant warlord whose security organization Tantita Nigeria Nigeria Limited - has proved a hard nut to crack by high class thriving gangs who having failed in their attempt to compromise the genuine efforts of the organization have resorted to all manners of propaganda and lies to get the contract cancelled. These vermin and vampires are no doubt saboteurs whose only interest is dollars from stolen crude. It is yet to be fathomed if Tinubu would listen to their death cries against a company that had bet its life to safeguard the commonwealth of the people emanating from the soils and the waters of the Niger Delta. Come to think of it, Government Ekpemupolo - Tompolo - knows the creeks like the back of his arms and is doggedly dedicated to protect the nation’s oil assets notwithstanding the high voltage blackmail by his traducers. Tinubu must not listen to them. He is doing the job in tandem with the terms of the contract. Security agents who apple cart of illegal income has been overturned must not be allowed to dictate the pace.

Above all, past governments had introduced legislation to prevent oil theft and pipeline vandalism like the Petroleum Industry Act which grants oil bearing and host communities a percentage of income derivable from oil exploration, production and exports. The government has equally engaged with communities in the Niger Delta region to address the issue of oil theft and pipeline vandalism. It also increased penalties for oil theft and pipeline vandalism and implemented transparency strategies in the oil sector to prevent corruption. It has equally increased investment in alternative sources of revenue to reduce dependence on oil.

What should Tinubu do to completely turn the tide of raging illegal bunkering, pipeline vandalism and humongous oil theft? The present administration should engage with communities in the Niger Delta region to address the root causes of oil theft and pipeline vandalism, such as poverty and unemployment. The government should increase investment in infrastructure development in the Niger Delta region to create jobs and reduce poverty. The government should as a matter of urgency increase transparency in the oil sector to prevent corruption and reduce the incentive for oil theft and pipeline vandalism. It must be noted that the recent removal of fuel subsidy by Tinubu has become a huge disincentive for PMS smuggling. A similar action is required to stop vandals and thieves from profiting, appropriating or benefiting illegally from the nation’s oil assets. Above all, the present administration must reinforce penalties for oil theft and pipeline vandalism to deter potential offenders. More so, the present administration must of necessity increase investment in alternative sources of revenue to reduce dependence on oil and diversify the economy. In this wise, it must collaborate and work with international partners to prevent the export and sale of stolen Nigerian oil in the global market. The Federal Government must also be courageous to break elite cartel and expose top members of the armed forces aiding and abetting pipeline vandalism and crude oil theft in the country.
In conclusion therefore, the Tinubu-led Federal Government must urgently operationalise the use of technologies to detect and prevent oil theft. International waters and shipping companies plying the trade of oil exports must be profiled to ensure that they are not double agents of legitimate and illegitimate trade in Nigeria’s oil resources. Local remedies like the engagement of Tantita by the NNPCL must be further encouraged to ensure more boots on ground for round the clock surveillance on crude oil pipelines and export terminals to deter would be thieves.

The Civic Centre on Policy and Strategic Engagement has called on Nigerians to disregard the circulation of mischievous news on the constitution of boards of government parastatal and agencies targeted against the Chief of Staff to Mr. President.

The organisation described it as fake news which is at best a distractive plot by some paid agents to heat the polity unnecessarily with the ultimate aim of causing an imaginary rift in the President Bola Tinubu administration.

Peter Enyigwe, said as concerned stakeholders, we have keenly followed the present administration's efforts to address the country's myriad of socio-economic challenges.

He said, "This much we are aware of after extensive consultations and advocacy with key stakeholders in the country.

"As such, we are aware of the level of commitment of the Chief of Staff to Mr. President in carrying out his duties, which is a result of his experiences in governance and administration and his capacity to stay focused.

"It remains a figment of imagination to assume that Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila would throw caution to the wind by acting against the interest of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the administration settles down for the task ahead.

"Those behind the distractive news items are disgruntled, possibly by the tough stance of the Chief of Staff on doing the right thing to their detriment and the benefit of Nigerians.

"President Bola Tinubu is not a stranger to governance and has definitely identified the selfless attributes of Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamilla and his loyalty before he was appointed Chief of Staff.

"The Civic Centre on Policy and Strategic Engagement advises Nigerians to be circumspect in our public conduct and desist from promoting and peddling falsehoods to score cheap political points. The narration is, at best uncharitable and aimed to paint the President Bola Tinubu administration in a bad light.

"We urge the unsuspecting general public to disregard the fake news as the Chief of Staff is a man of high standards and unequivocal commitment and loyalty to his principal, President Bola Tinubu.

"As a former high-ranking member of the National Assembly and fourth in the leadership hierarchy of the county at the time, Gbajabiamila is a selfless Nigerian that understands leadership.

"The members of the general public may disregard the fake news about him and lend their support to the Bola Tinubu administration in the efforts at setting Nigeria on the path of progress.

In line with the law establishing the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and subsequent amendments, which enhances its capacity to provide protection, crisis resolution, security of public infrastructures, maintenance of peace and order and the protection and rescuing of the Civil population during the period of emergency.


The Corp has over the years, struggled in its quest, towards increasing the capacity of its Officers and Men, in order to achieve these set out objectives.
It is therefore remarkable, that the Corp, has remained committed, despite the numerous challenges confronted with, over the years. In an astonishing determination, towards fostering a more efficient and accountable Corp, the incumbent Commandant General of the NSCDC, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi has undertaken initiatives that warrant both recognition and applause.


Few days ago, history was made, when the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Command and Staff College, Jos, Plateau State, graduated about 280 pioneer set of staff course 01/2023 of the Corp.


The establishment of the College, under the leadership of Dr. Ahmed Audi, coupled with significant improvements in the welfare of men and officers of the Corp, underscores a commitment to enhancing law enforcement standards and the lives of those who serve the nation.


The establishment of the Staff College, under the leadership of CG Ahmed Audi, signifies a pivotal moment in the advancement of the NSCDC. This institution stands as a testament to the CG's vision of providing cutting-edge training to officers, equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and ethical foundation required to carry out their duties effectively and professionally. By investing in modern training facilities and methodologies, the Ahmed Audi led leadership of the Corp, has taken a significant step towards bridging the gap between theoretical understanding and practical application, thus elevating the caliber of law enforcement personnel across the country.


The transformative reforms led by CG Ahmed Audi extend beyond training facilities; they also encompass an enhanced focus on the welfare of NSCDC officers.

Recognizing the essential role that officers play in maintaining law and order and most importantly, the protection of Nigeria’s Critical National Infrastructures, the CG has championed changes that improve their quality of life. Nigeria is a beautiful country. A good people and a great nation. But we have our share of the good, bad, and the ugly. It is not peculiar to us. It is universal and a norm in every society inhabited by humans.

In the course of my engagement as a member of the House of Representatives, I have had the privilege of interacting with my colleagues. We have shared ideas on how to make a meaningful impact in our various constituencies. I must confess that the interactions have been engaging and an eye-opener for me. Most members of the 10th Assembly are in-tune with our reality, and the urgency to make a difference is intense.

One such individual is the Rt. Hon Benjamin Kalu, the deputy speaker of the House of Representatives. He is such a character that you find interesting because of his line of thought. He can be brash when the need arises. He can be meek, and he can also be a lion, depending on the circumstance.

One thing stands out in all these circumstances. He is passionate about Nigeria and that explains why when he stands up to introduce himself in plenary, Kalu expresses his joy, happiness and pride in being a Nigerian. Its very rare.

He is also passionate about his people. The Igbo race occupies a strategic place in his heart, as it does in the country. He tells all that cared to listen that his emergence as the deputy speaker of the House of Representatives is a function of the home support he received. He owes the people the duty to ensure that issues that concern the Igbo race are given due attention.

Despite this love, Rt. Hon Benjamin Kalu is firm. He calls a spade a spade. He is a firm believer in justice and equity. He sees Nigeria from a broad perspective and has formed the habit of inclusiveness. He is fond of saying that we need each other regardless of ethnicity and religion. He has vowed to bring about this truism by pushing for patience and tolerance.

I subscribe to the school of thought that postulates that every generation has one man who champions the cause of his people. Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu is one such, and he reminds me of W.C.H. Prentice, who stated that "Effective leaders take a personal interest in the long-term development of their people, and they use tact and other social skills to encourage the people to achieve their best. It isn't about being "nice" or "understanding"—it's about tapping into individual motivations in the interest of furthering a goal."

Prentice defined leadership as "the accomplishment of a goal through the direction of human assistants," a successful leader can understand people's motivations and enlist participation in a way that marries individual needs and interests with the group's purpose. He called for democratic leadership that allows the people to learn and grow—without creating anarchy.

When the leader succeeds, it will be because he has learned two basic lessons: humans are complex and different. Human beings respond not only to the traditional carrot and stick but also to ambition, patriotism, love of the good and the beautiful, and many more dimensions and patterns of thought and feeling that make them human beings.

Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu fits the bill. His approach emphasized that the Igbos are reliable, friendly, and trustworthy and believe in one Nigeria, our democracy, regardless of what some might want to think. This much he has preached in the green chambers. His passion for his people and desire to ensure peace and unity in Igbo land impressed me.

In all ramifications, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu has demonstrated that it's a new era of Igbo leadership. Through his current position as the highest-ranking political office holder of Igbo extraction in Nigeria today, he is ready to champion this struggle for his people.

Maybe he is the messiah that had been long awaited to address the concerns of our Igbo brothers. With his position, the Igbos would have a sense of belonging in the Nigerian project. We must do well to admit that our Igbo brothers have not been carried along in the journey of the Nigeria of our dreams, and that is why I am excited by the position of Rt: Hon Benjamin Kalu and the steps taken so far.

I know he has the support of members of the 10th Assembly due to his intellectual approach. It is a case of using what you have to get what you want for the collective interest. This is a departure from the past, where persons in positions of authority need to remember easily that the people are central to their position and must act in their interest at all times.

I am glad the Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu is leading this new charge that would benefit the Igbo race and Nigeria because we all must unite as Nigerians in our quest for sustainable growth and development. Wangari Maathai once stated that " It's the little things citizens do. That's what will make the difference." Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu has toed the path of honor, and with our support, he can achieve great things.

In all ramifications, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu has demonstrated that it's a new era of Igbo leadership. How this crusade of love will take Kalu and the Igbos can only be seen in the future. I wish him luck.

The Save Ijaw Nation Group (SING) , is deeply concerned about the rising levels of political violence in the lead-up to the November 11 Bayelsa State Governorship election. SING says it believes, that the foundation of a healthy democracy rests on the principles of peaceful coexistence, open dialogue, and respect for diverse opinions. It urge all political actors, supporters, and stakeholders to put an immediate end to any form of violence or intimidation.

Reacting to the recent political violence witnessed in Opu-Nembe community of the State, the organization in a statement signed by its South South Director of Organizations, Emmanuel Gilead says "it is essential that the electoral process is characterized by fairness, transparency, and the free expression of the will of the people. Engaging in violence not only threatens these principles but also erodes public trust in the democratic process. We call upon all political parties, participating in the forthcoming election, to prioritize issue-based campaigns, focusing on policies and plans that can contribute to the betterment of our state." the Statement said.

"We further implore law enforcement agencies to uphold their duty to protect citizens, maintain order, and ensure that no individual or group is allowed to disrupt the peace of Bayelsa State. Equally, we appeal to media organizations to maintain responsible and unbiased reporting, facilitating the dissemination of accurate information to the public, ahead of the election."

"SING remains committed to promoting civic education, fostering inclusivity, and advocating for a violence-free political environment. The last two weeks have been weirdly interesting. Laced with sundry necessary controversies regarding the meteoric rising of the Akoko-born sterling law-maker, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. The saga came with weird weavings of losses, lessons, and, of course, incredible offerings, all of which combined to make the development an interesting narrative.

It is true that Tunji-Ojo dumbfoundingly took a rare leap from his seat at the lower (green) chamber to the membership of the national executive council on account of his nomination as a ministerial candidate by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. Agreed, the shades of opinions that have since greeted the unusual rise are warranted; what is not true is for any one, either envious or disgruntled to pontificate that the star boy did not earn what he got.

When a position, particularly a supposedly big deal like a ministerial, is opened for take, a contest is expected, tepid or fierce. And one could not have anticipated that a man would have it seamlessly without a bruise, push or pull, and that is what Bunmi Tunji-Ojo has recieved, either in form of laudations, disapprovals, expressed and implied rancour from the various circles. The commentaries are therefore within the ambit of the game so long they are innocuous.

The trends, as they unfold, were gauged. The temperament of the sources were justly measured and their imports well harvested as materials for future plays.
What has been observed, however, is that, at some layers, some of these criticisms hidden under the cloak of patriotism become helplessly ulterior and acerbic. Or how does one situate defamatory suppositions in the guise of either intra or inter party opposition? That, for sane minds, is a joke taken too far.

Tunji-Ojo cannot be sanctimonious. Yes, not saintly, but faults should be raised where they truly exist, not of phony formation in the name of "anything goes in politics". The fellow involved plays the refined part of politics. He does not believe in falling one to raise another. BTO, as being affectionately addressed by teeming admirers, works his way through daunting life's upheavals, learning the curves and fortifying himself with certain esoteric schemes beyond the reach of detractors.

Life, as we all know, can be a pack of pranks on humans; sometimes it turns in ones favour; at other times, it tilts full circle against our pursuits, not because we are insufficient but because it is not in the character of the planet to give all good. That is not to underrate the place of destiny in the dance of nature. After all thesis and theories, what a man has predestined to be he will ultimately become.

Even so, to both praises and praises, the attitude of Olubunmi has been that of faultless equanimity. A new, emerging leader that he is, he accommodates all with impeccable temperance and preaches mutual tolerance as a consummate party man. BTO, who, in no small measure, has put in so much into building and nurturing his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the state, is reaching out to all and sundry to allow healthy consolidation of the party and its lustrous achievements.

Before reaching this height, Hon Olubunmi has been a worthy representative of the state, delivering significant dividends to its various parts and exuding all-round finesse through his sterling performances. He cannot afford to go low but even more inspired to exemplify effective leadership and its core essence. Ondo state can only gain more from a fella whose expertise has been about bringing benefits home for his people. Small wonder he is calling on friends and fiends alike to prioritize with him the future of the party in the state, including the ways to achieve improved socioeconomic status for the state.

This, for him, is the ultimate goal for Tunji-Ojo; not any gainless trade. To take Ondo State to greater heights and to defend her interest where and when it matters.He kept nudging those who care to listen that this is the time all hands should be on deck; calling all genuine patriots, party men and women to agree and evolve a happier and greater Ondo State, and to rally President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in his expressed commitment to make Nigeria win at once. This is where BTO stands!

It is no longer news that the federal lawmaker representing Akoko North East/North West federal constituency of Ondo State, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has been confirmed as a minister, alongside 44 other nominees. While the nomination of BTO might have come as a surprise to some political gladiators in Ondo State, keen watchers of the political situation in Ondo State anticipated it.

Tunji-Ojo enjoys a very robust relationship with the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila; the Akoko born politician equally boasts of a very impressive resume. Ordinarily, the outstanding resume that Tunji-Ojo possesses could readily secure a ministerial slot for him, any day. He is sufficiently educated and has equally garnered outstanding work experience over the years.

BTO was trained as an Information Communication Technology expert at the London Metropolitan University. Upon graduation, Tunji-Ojo established an ICT firm and he became a successful ICT expert and consultant at the relatively young age of 24. Since his graduation, he has been undertaking regular trainings as a Certified Ethical Hacker

Long before he delved into partisan politics, the newly confirmed minister had carved a niche for himself in the world of ICT. He had worked abroad with different organizations and had likewise undertaken several consultancy jobs for private firms, government enterprises and the Nigerian National Assembly. Tunji-Ojo was already a multi-millionaire before he attained the age of 30. The egghead should ordinarily not have had anything to do with politics because he was doing extremely well in his private business, but the passion to serve and impact many lives directed him to the path of partisan politics.

Incontrovertibly, the first tenure of BTO as a member of the House of Representatives was a rollercoaster of successes. He blazed the trail of quality representation and clearly outperformed all his predecessors put together from 1999 to 2019. He undertook and delivered infrastructure projects that were never thought possible within and outside of his federal constituency. In a manner that was unprecedented in Akoko North East/North West federal constituency, BTO magnanimously extended his infrastructural revolution outside his immediate federal constituency. Every part of Akokoland has benefitted immensely from the
his unmatched legislative representation.

In saner and developed climes, politicians with impressive pedigrees like Tunji-Ojo's are encouraged to push for the highest offices in their countries. This was the same way the likes of Emmanuel Macron of France, Justin Trudeau of Canada and Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine became leaders of their countries at relatively young ages. However, this is Nigeria, where a whole lot of factors would usually be considered before one is allowed to go near the country's top positions, including the presidency.

If a man as gifted and intellectually endowed like Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo cannot, for Nigerian reasons look in the direction of the presidency or even the governorship, he is definitely more than qualified to take up the ministerial slot of Ondo State in the Federal Executive Council. However, inasmuch as no one can in good conscience doubt the eminent qualifications of Tunji-Ojo as a minister, some hiccups surfaced during the cause of screening Tunji-Ojo in the Senate.

The Senate in its wisdom had graciously confirmed the nomination of Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo as a minister and now, political discourse has since shifted from lobbying for ministerial slots to the imminent allocation of portfolios to ministers. One credit that cannot be taken away from this young minister is the fact of his amazing brilliance and eminent qualification to serve and deliver on his new national assignment. Tunji-Ojo has
promised to be a minister for all and not for any section of Ondo State. Besides, the confirmation of BTO also means a new height of political attainment for the youth of Ondo State and Nigeria at large. Though a youth, Tunji-Ojo has promised to operate an open door policy that will readily accommodate the interests of both the young and the old in Ondo State and Nigeria at large. Head or tail, the confirmation of Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo is surely a win-win situation for all generations of political players in the Sunshine State.

*Niger Coup; International Civil Rights Group, Top Diplomat & Nigerien/Nigeria Lawyer Invoke the Protocols of ECOWAS Court to stop Tinubu, and ECOWAS, from using the military against Niger Republic*

An International Civil Group, Egalitarian Mission for Africa (EMA) has dragged President Bola Tínubu of Nigeria before the Economic Community of West African (ECOWAS) Court of Justice, invoking the Protocols of the Court to stop the planned military action against the Republic of Niger over coup plot.

The group in the suit instituted on its behalf by a Nigerian lawyer, Dr Oluwakayode Ajulo, is praying the Regional Court to invoke relevant ECOWAS treaties and international laws to stop the military invasion of Niger Republic being spearhead by the Nigerian Government.

The grouse of the Civil Group, among others, is that the planned military action or invasion will run foul of the obligations in the ECOWAS treaties and therefore amounting to illegality.

The suit marked ECW/CCJ/APP/3/23 emphasized categorically that ECOWAS treaties prohibit aggression among member States.

Apart from the Egalitarian Mission for Africa (EMA), other plaintiffs in the matter are a former Director General of the Nigerian Institute of the Internal Affairs (NIIA), Professor Bola Akinterinwa and a Nigerian Northern Region lawyer, Hamza Nuhu Dantani.

Defendants are ECOWAS, Authority of Heads of State & Government of ECOWAS, President of ECOWAS Mission, Federal Republic of Nigeria and Republic of Niger.

A military group led by General Abdourhamane Tchiani had on July 26 toppled the civilian and democratic government of President Mohammed Bazoun who has since been clamped into unlawful military detention.

Although the three plaintiffs in the regional suit described the coup detat as most unfortunate, they however warned that Nigeria should not travel the dangerous road of military hostilities that may further escalate the crisis in the Niger Republic.

According to them, over 300,000 refugees, mainly Nigeria citizens, have already fled the Niger Republic adding that military action against Niger Republic would lead to breach of fundermrntal rights to life, right to dignity of human persons and liberty to life.

The plaintiffs therefore prayed the ECOWAS Court of Justice for a restraining order against any form of military action in Niger Republic that may undermine the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of Niger Republic.

Besides the Court action, the plaintiffs’ Counsel, Dr Ajulo wrote a strongly worded letter to President Tinubu, notifying him of pendency of the suit and invoking the Protocol of the ECOWAS Court on the need to respect and obey the rule of law as well as to refrain from doing that will militate against the subject matter.

The letter is entitled "NOTIFICATION OF PENDENCY OF CASE BEFORE THE ECOWAS COMMUNITY COURT OF JUSTICE
CALL FOR STRICT ADHERENCE TO THE PROTOCOL OF THE HONOURABLE COURT THE ECOWAS COMMUNITY COURT OF JUSTICE".

It read in part "We are Counsel to the Plaintiffs/Applicants in the above case before the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice and it is on their firm and unequivocal instructions that we write.

"Sequel to the Resolution and several sanctions imposed by the ECOWAS in the aftermath of the unfortunate and unconstitutional takeover of the democratically elected Government of the Republic of Niger, we have lodged a Case before the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice in an application for reliefs as the proposed military intervention in the Republic of Niger would be tantamount to aggression between ECOWAS Member States.

" The intervention will specifically violate Articles 1, 5, 15, 16, 17, 21, 22 & 24 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights; Articles 1 (2), 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13 & 14 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights; Articles 1, 3, 22, 23 (3), 25 (1) & 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948; Articles 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10 of the Declaration on the Right to Development 1986; Articles 6, 15, 31, 63 & 64 of the Revised Treaty of the Economic Community of West African States; Article 10 of the Supplementary Protocol (A/SP.1/01/05) amending the Protocol (A/P.I/7/91) relating to the Community Court of Justice and Articles 10 (c), 22, 26, 27, 28, 56 of the ECOWAS Protocol Relating to the Mechanism for Conflict Prevention, Management, Resolution, Peace– Keeping and Security 1999.

"The Case, an official copy of which has been duly served on your Excellency through the ECOWAS Secretariat, 101, Yakubu Gowon Crescent, Asokoro, Abuja, has invoked the jurisdiction of the International Court to consider conventions, treaties, Protocols and regulations to which your Excellency and the Federal Republic of Nigeria are signatories and which override the resolutions, sanctions, domestic law and practices and which the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice has been called upon to declare illegal. Another copy of the Case is attached for your informed action.

"We wish to further draw your attention to Article 22(2) of the Protocol on the Community Court of Justice which mandates that “When a dispute is brought before the Court, Member states or institutions of the Community shall refrain from any action likely to aggravate or militate against its settlement”

"In the Case before the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice, The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Authority of Heads of State and Government (of which your Excellency is the Chairman), President, ECOWAS Commission, The Federal Republic of Nigeria (of which your Excellency is the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces) have been sued as sovereign legal representatives of respective institutions including the Republic of Niger.

"It is your Excellency’s sacred duty as the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS and the President and Commander-in-Chief of Armed Forces of Federal Republic of Nigeria under your hand to bring the institution of the Case before ECOWAS Community Court of Justice to the attention of the other Defendants/Respondents and to insist, particularly in your Excellences’ subsequent meetings, that the Defendants/Respondents, refrain from taking any action in respect of the subject matter pending the determination of the case, in view of your Excellency and Nigeria’s protocol obligation under the Article above quoted.

"Your Excellency, it is our firm confidence that by your enviable knowledge of high international standard of due adherence to the rule of law and respect for the supranational judicial process obtainable in a Case of this nature, we need not further stress the need to ensure that all the Defendants/Respondents concerned maintain the status quo presently obtaining, and restrain themselves from taking any step susceptible to being regarded by the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice and international Community as prejudicial to the interest of our client or any of the parties in court.

The story of MT PRAISEL is getting more bizarre by the day. The Nigerian Navy has just released a statement saying tests have confirmed that the product on board the vessel intercepted by Tantita Security Services operatives is indeed HPFO as logged in the permit issued by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Agency (NMDPRA). 


What the Nigerian Navy fails to understand is that Nigerians won’t accept any report emanating from the Navy. How can a Navy that has been accused of complicity in a case of suspected oil theft be the judge and jury in its own case when it manages the process of conducting a test on the products within the vessel. 


This is simply unacceptable. Too many red flags have been raised by Tantita Security Services that warrant the National Security Adviser or the President to set up an investigation panel on this matter.


The facts known so far are that a navy personnel by the name of Cdr Samuel Samba Musa engaged in a conversation with a Tantita operative that suggested there was more to meet the eye concerning MT PRAISEL.


The permit issued by NMDPRA showed that the voyage of the vessel was from Lagos to  Koko in Delta State while the Navy permit said the vessel was going in the opposite direction. The Master of the vessel upon interrogation said the vessel was headed to Bonny. Two permts with conflicting information and the Master with another information so which are we to believe? 


Beyond this two tanks of the vessel were said to be fully loaded with AGO suspected to be from an illegal refinery and without accompanying documents.


Knowing this how then can the Nigerian Navy expect  Nigerians to accept a laboratory report from a test managed by them?


The Navy was silent on the discrepancies in the documents and the story of the Master. The Navy was silent on the source of the AGO in the vessel. The Navy refused to allow Tantita operatives access to the product so they could conduct an independent test. This in itself speaks volumes.


For how long will we allow a few unscrupulous individuals in the Navy continue to dent the image of the whole Nigerian Navy. It is embarrassing to the nation that the brazen theft of crude oil continues unabated inspire of the humongous amounts spent equipping the Nigerian Navy. 


What is more injurious is that anytime an incident like this occurs the Navy is quick to issue press statements denying her complicity but is always slow to bring errant personnel to justice.


Right before our very eyes a cover up of gargantuan proportions is taking place. The NNPCL and other regulatory agencies who should take ownership of this process are quiet as the Navy bullies her way through.


In recent times the cartel behind crude theft hides behind bogus permits identifying their product as HPFO knowing it is a black product. The question that must now be asked is the source of the HPFO and who the supposed end users are.


It is important to note that if the Navy succeeds in moving this vessel without the NNPCL, NMDPRA, NUPRC and Tantita operatives all converging on same vessel for a joint inspection then the war on crude oil theft by this administration should be kissed goodbye.

The innovative reforms being implemented by the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Mele Kyari is yielding positive results for Nigeria's oil and gas sector, a member of the House of Representatives, Hon Philip Agbese has said.


Agbese (APC-Benue) is currently representing Ado/ Okpokwu/ Ogbadibo Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives.


Kyari who was appointed as the NNPC Boss on July 8,2019 has put in place robust operational blueprint that has reduced costs and improved profitability for the National Oil Company.


Shortly after his appointment, Kyari made his plans very clear for the Corporation which has now been transformed into a Limited Liability Company in line with the Petroleum Industry Act 2021.


Specifically, his plans centered around operational efficiency and transparency for the NNPC Limited.


Speaking on the impact of the GCEO in the oil and gas sector, Agbese said under Kyari’s Transparency, Accountability and Performance Excellence (TAPE) agenda, the era of opaqueness in managing the affairs of the NNPC has since ended.


He commended Kyari for his exceptional performance as the NNPCL Boss, adding that Kyari has overseen a remarkable turnaround in the oil company which was once the cesspit for corruption, fraud, and abuse of office.


The lawmaker said the NNPC CEO has spearheaded a transformative effort to revolutionize the way the nation produces and distributes its most vital resource.


According to Agbese, from the moment he assumed his position at the helm of affairs, Kyari was driven by a fierce sense of purpose and an unshakable commitment to excellence, implementing a series of bold and innovative reforms that have transformed the sector.


He said, "Under Kyari’s leadership, the NNPC has entered into a partnership with Italian oil company, Eni, to rehabilitate and upgrade the refinery, with a target of achieving full production capacity by 2023.


"Kyari has overseen the implementation of several innovative initiatives designed to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the NNPC’s operations.


"These include the establishment of a new trading subsidiary, the creation of a new crude oil marketing division, and the implementation of a new performance management system.


"Under the leadership of Mele Kyari, the company has taken significant steps towards enhancing accountability in the industry, by publishing monthly financial and operational reports.


"The NNPC has also embarked on a massive effort to increase domestic gas utilization, reduce its energy mix, and reduce its carbon footprint. This has involved the development of new gas infrastructure, the expansion of existing facilities, and the promotion of gas-based industries such as petrochemicals and fertilizers


"These efforts have yielded impressive results, with Nigeria now the largest producer of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in Africa, and one of the top 10 producers globally.

Under his leadership, he added that the NNPC has become a beacon of hope and a model of excellence for Nigerians.


Agbese said NNPC has revamped and upgraded its refining capacity, with the ultimate goal of achieving self-sufficiency in the production of petroleum products.


According to him, Kyari's biggest legacy has been the approval of fuel subsidy removal which has already saved Nigeria over N1trn.


The lawmaker said Kyari would have ordinarily kicked against the move for the obvious benefits that come with it, noting that the NNPC GCEO chose national interests over personal gains - an act of patriotism, integrity, and commitment.


Agbese further described the 350MW first phase of the NNPC Ltd Gwagwalada Independent Power Project (GIPP) as the brainchild of Kyari.


The project is expected to generate between $700m and $800m annually for Nigeria in its first ten years of operation.


The GIPP project is led by NNPC Ltd in a joint venture with China Machinery and Engineering Corporation (CMEC) for the EPC, and General Electric (GE) for the Long Term Service Agreement.


It is designed to provide reliable electricity, strengthen Nigeria’s energy sector, and accelerate economic growth in the country.


He, therefore, said more upright and honest citizens like Kyari are needed to eradicate the endemic corruption in the oil and gas sector.


Agbese noted that the NNPC is very much on track toward sustainable growth and development.


He, however, urged President Bola Tinubu to appoint more Nigerians like Kyari into key positions of government to enable him deliver his renewed hope agenda.

Agbese said the Scheme has witnessed a remarkable transformation in the last six months.

The lawmaker said his interactions with corps members and staff of the NYSC have been positive as they rated the revered Army officer highly.

Agbese noted that recent tours of NYSC camps and offices showed that young Nigerians are now more excited about the Scheme while the staff are better motivated than in recent times.

The House of Reps member said this is down to the high-level professionalism, patriotism, and commitment introduced by Brig Gen Ahmed.

He added that the NYSC DG has also instilled integrity, accountability, and discipline in the operations of the Scheme.

The lawmaker also said Brig Gen Ahmed has brought fresh air to the NYSC with recent policies and innovations.

Agbese described Ahmed as a reflection of the high level of professionalism and training that men of the Nigerian Army receive to become respected officers.

He, therefore, charged Nigerians to continue to support the NYSC to fulfill its mandate to encourage and develop common ties among the youths of Nigeria and the promotion of national unity.

The House member added that the NYSC under Ahmed is imbuing in young Nigerians a tradition of industry at work and patriotic and loyal service to the nation.

The Civil Society Network for Good Governance (CSNGG) has passed a vote of confidence on the management of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) under the leadership of Engr. Gbenga Komolafe.
The CSNGG, an umbrella body of 87 CSOs in Nigeria, made the declaration at a press conference by its President, Ambassador Adefila Kamal in Abuja on Tuesday.
Ambassador Adefila Kamal said the network was impressed with the reforms that the NUPRC has implemented in the oil and gas sector, including the introduction of regulations to curb oil theft and losses through operational and administrative leakages.
The CSNGG also commended the NUPRC for its sterling performance and ability to raise about N174 Billion in signature bonuses paid for marginal oil fields and developed regulatory initiatives within a short period.

The network, however, expressed concern about the plot by a few misguided members of the public who are anti-reform to bring the name of the Commission and that of the CEO to disrepute over fabricated and unsubstantiated claims.

The CSNGG said it is aware that some issues that bordered on staff welfare have either been addressed or are in the process of being addressed.

The network urged members of the public to disregard further lies that will be dished out by these detractors that are anti reforms.

The CSNGG also appealed to the management team of the Commission to remain focused, consistent, transparent, and accountable in ensuring compliance with petroleum laws, regulations, and guidelines in the upstream oil and gas sector.

Finally, the network charged staff, unions within and outside the Commission, CSOs, and media to cooperate with the Commission in the discharge of their responsibilities which involved monitoring operations at drilling sites, producing wells, production platforms and flow stations, crude oil export terminals, and all pipelines among others. 
This is the only way NUPRC and Nigeria at large can achieve her oil and gas goals.[left][/left]

No fewer than 34 civil society organizations have announced that they will embark on an inspection tour of the Rural Electrification Agency's (REA) projects across the country.

The groups, under the auspices of the Coalition for Probity and Accountability (COPA), said this is the first in a series of expeditions to Ministries, Department and Agencies.

In a statement signed by Dr. Uzah Thomas, the groups said the essence of this exercise is to appraise the performances of the MDAs with the view to enhance accountability, service delivery, and good governance.

Uzah added that it is also necessary to separate facts from fiction, mediocre from excellence, and results from oversights.

He said the choice of the REA is due to the reports of some groundbreaking feats by its Managing Director, Mr Mr Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad.

Dr. Uzah said that from the information on the ground, Ahmad has transformed the agency with a dint hard work, courage, and clear-minded focus.

He added that Engr Ahmad has bequeathed efficiency, transparency, and accountability in the operations of the REA.

"It is all over the news that the REA is now known for timely and quality execution of projects, especially structures. It is said that Ahamd's training as an architect is the game-changer," Uzah said.

"From available figures, over 1.2 million households have been electrified while over six million Nigerians have received electricity through its capital projects. The REA is understood to have implemented programs from the Rural Electrification Fund, Education Energising Program, and Grid Extension.

"We are told that the agency initiated and completed several solar projects across the nation keeping with its mandate to provide all rural dwellers access to reliable and affordable power.

"From many testimonies, Projects are now well planned, packaged, and selected by the beneficiary communities for review and concurrence by the NEA. No more delay, corruption, and misappropriation. "

Uzah, therefore said that after the exercise, a detailed report will be made public to Nigerians on how the Rural Electrification Agency has fared under Engr Ahmad.

Former Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress Dumebi Kachikwu has criticized President Tinubu's economic policies, saying that they are "tokenist" and will do little to help Nigerians.

In a statement released today, Kachikwu said that President Tinubu's speech on the economy "once again highlighted the absence of a solid team behind the Presidency." He also criticized the President for not mentioning what his administration would do to ensure that those who have abused the subsidy scheme are brought to justice.

Kachikwu said that President Tinubu made the same mistake of his predecessors in formulating policies and plans that assume ceteris paribus is in play. He said that "deep rooted multi-dimensional corruption is an unquantifiable variable that distorts and disrupts every economic plan and policy."

Kachikwu also criticized the President's palliatives, saying that they are "tokenist in nature and will do little or nothing to ameliorate the plight of Nigerians." He said that the N1 billion that the President has prescribed for industries is "just $1.1 million" and that the Nigerian Custom Service alone takes about N10 million per 40ft container.

Kachikwu also criticized the President's plan to procure 3000 CNG powered buses, saying that Nigeria has only sixteen installed CNG skids and most of them are in the southern part of Nigeria.

Kachikwu concluded by saying that "President Tinubu means well but there still remains a big difference between meaning well and doing well. It is hard to do well with the assemblage of a mediocre team."

No fewer than 25 pro-democracy groups came together to applaud the Speaker for a harmonious and seamless running of the Green Chamber in the last two months.

Under the aegis of the National Democratic Group (NDG), the coalition said they have been particularly impressed with how the standing committees emerged.

In a statement signed by Hon Ochonu William, the 25 groups said Rt Hon Abbas has potentially put together the best committees in the history of Nigeria.

According to Ochonu, the Speaker gave priority to capacity, experience and mastery, adding that party politics, religion and ethnicity were never on the front burner.

He further said the creation of extra committees is a masterstroke as it will "enhance efficiency and productivity".

Describing Abbas as a servant leader, Ochonu noted that the House leadership has carried all the members along by running an open-door policy.

He said the result is glaring as the 10th House of Reps has operated with oneness, openness and fairness to all.

He said the choice of TETFUND is due to the reports of some groundbreaking feats by its Executive Secretary, Sonny Echono in less than two years on the job.

Ali said that from the information on the ground, the revered architect has transformed Nigeria’s Tertiary Education Fund with a dint hard work, courage, and clear-minded focus.

He added that there have been procurement and project management reforms at the agency, eliminating corruption, the delivery time of projects, and cost escalation while improving general efficiency in the discharge of the Fund’s mandate.

"It is all over the news that TETFund is now known for timely and quality execution of projects, especially structures. It is said that the Echono's training as an architect is the game-changer," Ali said.

"However, sources say this is linked to his wide experience in public service, being one of the nation’s pioneering procurement officers who saw to the development of the procurement system that has come to change the narrative in public offices.

1.0 It is with a heart full of grief that I pen down this condolence message following the demise of a great jurist the Late Honourable Justice Chima Centus Nweze JSC, CFR who was of tremendous service to the Legal Profession and Nigeria in general.

2.0 The Judiciary and Nigeria at large has during his life time enjoyed his quintessential and cerebral spout of scholarly pronouncement. There is no reservation in noting that our jurisprudence, our dear country, Nigeria, the Legal Institutions, the Legal Practitioners and particularly my humble self, will continue to benefit immensely from the wisdom, sagaciousness, competence and cerebral prowess of my Lordship during his lifetime. The life of the Late Honourable Justice Chima Centus Nweze JSC, CFR is one that will never be forgotten.

3.0 My Lord’s legacy, integrity, high value service, erudite pronouncements and scholarly display of wisdom as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria will always be etched in the sands of time. I pray that the Almighty God grant him eternal rest amen!

A frontline civil society organisation in Africa, Egalitarian Mission for Africa (EMA) has advised President Tinubu and other African Heads of States who are members of ECOWAS and the African Union against resorting to further military operations in response to the military junta's seizure of power in Niger.

While condemning the unconstitutional takeover by the armed forces in Niger, EMA, through its Director of Foreign Operations, Dr. Sadiq Jobu, firmly restated that Democracy is the best form of government, leaving no alternative to it. While commending the resolution of African heads of States to restore democratic order, EMA urged that this should be pursued through diplomacy rather than armed struggle, which could prove counterproductive.

"We salute the courage of President Tinubu and salute his leadership quality in addressing the issue promptly, however the situation in Niger is delicate, with the armed forces pledging their support to the coup leaders, who are rallying the citizens behind their cause. However, any military confrontation risks jeopardising the life of Bazoum, who is currently being held as a bargaining chip by the coup makers. This could escalate into internal conflict or even war between Niger and countries opposed to the coup." EMA said.

Niger has a history of military putsches, experiencing around seven failed or successful ones since gaining independence from France in 1960.

The latest coup is the seventh in West and Central Africa since 2020, and the fourth among the 15-nation ECOWAS members where the military has seized political power.

While ECOWAS has threatened the use of force and military intervention, EMA emphasized the importance of pursuing diplomatic solutions and engaging in dialogue with the coup leaders, saying "The situation in Niger requires a cautious approach, and international actors must avoid being drawn into a proxy war, especially given the long borders and historical ties shared by both countries."

EMA called for a strong signal to be sent to the Niger junta, condemning the military coup, and applying effective sanctions to pressure the coup leaders.

The group said "however, kinetic intervention should be a last resort due to the high-risk nature of such actions. The socio-economic and political environment in Niger remains fragile, with existing insecurities and mistrust between ethnic groups, making it imperative to handle the situation with utmost care and diplomatic tact.

As the crisis unfolds, it is crucial for leaders to prioritize diplomacy, engage in dialogue, and seek peaceful resolutions to restore democratic governance and stability in Niger. The support and collaboration of the international community will play a vital role in fostering a positive outcome for the nation and its people."

All Progressives Congress Ondo State chapter has appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Hon. Bunmi Tunji-Ojo as a minister designate.

Tunji-Ojo, a member of House of Representatives, representing Akoko Noth East/Akoko Noth West, was among the minter nominees screened by the Senate on Thursday.

In a statement personally signed by the state Chairman of APC, Engr. Ade Adetimehin, the president was appreciated for choosing Tunji-Ojo among the minister designates.

Adetimehin described Tunji-Ojo as a brilliant and competent personality worthy of representing the state and the federation.

The statement reads in parts: “On behalf of our leader, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu SAN,CON, the leadership, membership, the State Working Committee and the State Executive Committee, I wish to express our profound appreciation for the appointment of our illustrious son, Hon Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, as a Minister-designate, of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

I am extremely worried for the President of Nigeria, Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I am worried because as his ardent follower since his days in NADECO and then later in 1999 when he became the Governor of Lagos, I have come to admire him as an ultra-progressive fellow. He is a man that desires the poor to breathe, he is a capitalist with a socialist conscience, a man that understands the importance of balancing economic growth with the quality of life of the people.

These pedigree and more made it easy for some of us to join forces with him after he won the APC primaries to secure victory at the February 25, 2023, polls, despite the very weak points of the opposition against him. But right now, his honeymoon with the Nigerian people may not last if he allows the prodigal sons of Nigeria to have a foothold in the implementation of his post-subsidy removal programs and general economic policies.

Recent economic policies that have been rolled out show very clearly that he is a man of his words. The renewed hope agenda upon which we campaigned is very rich and implementable, but the Nigerian ‘family black sheep’ must be tamed. This time around, the bulk does not stop at Mr. President’s table but the bulk that will shape the happiness of Nigerians will now stop at the table of 36 people plus one. The weakest link in this game will undermine every genuine intention of Mr. President.

When the announcement of palliative for Nigerians was made occasioned by subsidy removal, I knew there was going to be a problem of implementation. How do we get the proposed N8,000 to the targeted populace? Which method do we use? Who will be in charge? Will it not be politicized and hijacked? Do we have a reliable database of poor Nigerians outside the disputed National Social Register (NSR)? If it exists, how updated is it? What role will the governors play? Do we have reliable local government systems in the country?

These and many others agitated my mind and many others in the social protection space. This also formed the foundation of my contributions during the launching of the Nigerian Update report hosted by the World Bank on the 27th of June 2023 – how do we get this done in view of our past experiences which led to more issues.

In the last fifteen years, I am constrained to say that the Nigerian governors have been the albatross of all federal government efforts aimed at fast-tracking the developmental trajectory of this country and I have my few instances to prove this assertion.

In a very summarized manner, I will start with the Paris club refunds to states, there are no tangible results to show for the huge amounts received by state governments from this window. It took the ex-Governor of Rivers, Nyesom Wike, to appreciate then President Buhari for Nigerians to know that states have collected such a huge amount of money, as we pen down this, most governors are still denying they ever received extra cash from the federal government.

How many of us remember the Excess crude account/sale jumbo of the Obasanjo and Yar’ Adua administration? Billions of naira were shared between the states and local governments, and no Nigerian can point to any sustainable economic project that was built from that window that is impacting the lives of Nigerians right now. I stand to be corrected.

Anchor Borrowers program: About five years ago under the leadership of the then Central bank Governor Godwin Emefiele, a very noble agriculture-based project was birthed known as Anchor Borrowers program, just as Nigerians were looking forward to the benefit of this project around food security and all the value chains associated with it, the governors hijacked this project at the state level and the rest seems to be history just like billions of naira may have gone down the drain without consequences.

ENDARS/COVID-19 palliatives, at the advent of COVID-19 in 2020 and the ENDSARS protests which rocked Nigeria afterward, the Federal government under President Buhari distributed foods and other emergency stuff around Nigeria for the benefits of the people.

Unfortunately, to the chagrin and shock of many Nigerians, most state governments blatantly refused to share these things with the people of their states amidst biting hunger and anger in the land against the Nigerian government, it took the youths in some states to burst the warehouses for these things to be made available by force albeit in a chaotic manner. The rest they say is history with billions of naira gone with it.

The World Bank assisted NGCARES project appears to have succeeded because the federal government/world bank having learnt its lesson from previous exercises decided to manage this project directly from a dedicated office coordination unit from Abuja with direct contact with their state liaison officers, otherwise the success rate would have been abysmally poor as of today.

Multi-dimensional poverty: The annual multi-dimensional poverty poor routinely issued by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) indicates very clearly that there is a complete failure of governance in most states of Nigeria. In 2022, it was reported by the NBS that over 113 million Nigerians are multi-dimensionally poor.

The good thing about their own indicators of poverty is that it is measurable and trackable, for instance, it says millions of people lack access to basic health services, basic education, sanitation, and food security and all these are under the purview of the states and local governments. If over 60% of Nigerians are dimensionally poor due to lack of services that ought to be provided by a certain tier of government, your guess is as good as mine – FAILURE without any other form of classification.

It is against this backdrop that gets one agitated that the Bola Tinubu’s government should be wary of the level of engagement or involvement of the state governments in the implementation of his post-subsidy removal program either in the distribution of any form of palliative, in the execution of the Infrastructure Support Program (ISP), or any other measure whatsoever that is aimed at bringing the desired succor to the people of Nigeria – The governors’ have not proved to be reliable partners in progress.

Suggested next steps.
As an actor in the social protection space in Nigeria, it is my considered opinion.

1. The Nigerian state governors should be compelled to disclose how much they are expecting in terms of savings/additional revenue from the federation account occasioned by the subsidy removal. Full disclosure and accountability are the key words here.
2. This must be followed up with a supplementary budget to their state assemblies.
3. They should design and come up with their own states-based programs/work plans that are aimed at cushioning the effects of subsidy removal on the people, with a dedicated project monitoring and evaluation office, while the Federal government complements with a counterpart support measure.
4. There should be a citizen-led engagement around reporting and evaluation of each state program with verifiable data and impact on their people.

Good enough, Mr. President has been very proactive in setting his agenda very clearly with the N500bn approved by the National Assembly. However, the success of this intention is dependent on the strength of the implementation and the capacity of the handlers to break the cycle of policy failures that have marred pro-poor programs since the return to democratic rule in 1999, especially at the state level.

Secondly, it is advisable that the cash component of the intervention should be considered highly. This is because while the poor and vulnerable households across the country patiently and eagerly await the infrastructure support program and other measures approved by the National Economic Council (NEC), they will need an immediate disposable income for feeding, local transportation, childcare, and health services.

The National Social Register should not be discarded but reviewed, updated, and more beneficiaries should be mined in addition to the current register. Cash-in-aid to the poor, even in the United States and Canada, brings a lot of immediate succor and encourages citizenship faith in the governance process, while future tax payment from the beneficiaries is enhanced when the economy gets on track.

While I wish President Bola Tinubu well, we must learn from the past and navigate our ways from the stranglehold of the Nigerian prodigal sons and the Black sheep of Nigeria.

Ajulo Condemns Infringement on Governor Akeredolu's Privacy, Calls for Respectful Support

Dr. Kayode Ajulo, OON, a distinguished lawyer and rights activist, has strongly condemned the video that surfaced online, showing the Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu, in a hospital receiving greetings from a well-wisher on his birth anniversary.

The lawyer said the clip was a violation of the privacy of the Governor as it portrayed him in a vulnerable state. He said it is essential to prioritize the privacy and dignity of private and public figures, especially when they are facing health challenges.

"Sharing such a video of the Governor in a weakened condition is highly insensitive and uncalled for. Irrespective of the rumour making the rounds, his privacy and integrity must be respected especially during this time of health struggles." He said.

Ajulo stressed that a more respectful approach could have been taken, such as arranging a private meeting or a personal video call to convey greetings from the esteemed well-wishers, particularly the Acting Governor, SSG, the Deji of Akure, the Olowo of Owo Kingdom and other dignitaries.

He said "I maintained that it was a total invasion of the Governor's privacy and an act of insensitivity towards his well-being. As concerned citizens, we must support him and pray more for his speedy recovery, not exploit his vulnerable state for any purpose."

He emphasized that the picture showing him and his wife was sufficient to assure the public of his well-being, noting that crucial health matters are personal and should not be exploited for political or any other purposes, underscoring the need to maintain ethical standards in public disclosure of information and images.

Ajulo, addressing the duties of the attending medical professionals, said they are held to high ethical standards and are duty-bound to prioritise patient confidentiality. He said allowing the Governor to be filmed in such a state was unethical and could warrant calls for sanctions against the healthcare providers involved, saying it undermined the trust and confidence usually reposed in them during critical times of illness.

"Critical medical care should be managed with utmost professionalism and sensitivity. It is disheartening that medical practitioners could allow such unethical behaviour. Healthcare personnel should be well aware of their ethical obligations to maintain patient privacy and confidentiality because the medical profession prides itself on upholding the Hippocratic Oath, and any breach of this sacred commitment is highly condemned. It is therein appropriate that patient confidentiality and dignity are upheld." Ajulo added.

The lawyer, in light of the Governror's extended medical leave, called on the people of Ondo State to rally behind the Governor with more prayers and well-wishes while respecting his right to rest and recover in peace. He also urged government appointees and politicians to refrain from unnecessary political calculations that could further burden the Governor during his period of medical treatment, saying "they should prioritize the welfare of the Governor and the State, allowing him the necessary space and time to focus on his health."

In today’s world “Big Data” has become the major buzz, which sometimes gives the impression that the use of data in decision making at all levels is an entirely new phenomenon. A careful study of the evolution of human society however reveals that what is today known as development has always been directly proportional to the amount of information available to mankind and the ability to process such information at scale and speed.
Human societies have always been driven forward by learning new ways to interact with, exploit and enrich the enormous resources that nature has endowed in our world. Of all creations inhabiting the earth, man stands out in the unique ability to take in information, analyze and convert it, to decipher data patterns, towards making better decisions. By making better decisions, man is able to have a better understanding of the world in which he lives to preserve his race.
Man has gone through various stages of development, which are basically bookmarked by new discoveries that change the way we understand our world and the possibilities we can extract out of time and space. Man’s quest for leverage, the ability to do more with less, has always driven man to develop tools to guide his decision making.
In the early days of history, man’s quest for leverage led to the use of stone tools to till the land and hunt for game. Further exploration of stone led man to discover fire, from which man converted stones to iron tools, marking the end of the stone age and the beginning of the iron age. In the iron age man was able to fashion tools that enabled him to till more land in less time, and then the invention of the wheel led to animals being to be used to till land with agricultural production growing astronomically, and marking the agrarian age. The discovery of the compass made travelling across continents more reliable, leading to agricultural produce travelling far as well.
Excess agricultural produce led to wheel led man to create machine tools that standardized production at a greater scale and speed, than man could by hand, marking what has become known as the industrial revolution and industrial age. The industrial age gave birth to the computer age when, in the mid-20th century, the Integrated Circuit (IC) was invented following the invention of transistors. Integrated circuit led to the invention of electronic computers that had the capacity to process information and produce data in one generation at a faster rate than the rest of history combine.
In 1965, Intel co-founder and CEO Gordon Moore observed that the number of transistors in an IC would double every decade and in 1975 revised this position to say it would double every two years. This rapid growth in computing power led to the creation of super computers, then the internet and worldwide web, which effectively marked the internet age. The internet age has in turn put so much computing power literally in the hands of the average human being that the average smartphone user carries in his hand a device that is millions of times more powerful than the 4kilobyte computer used to power the first man to the moon.
This processing power has led to excess information leading to the current age of big data analytics, with the competitive advantage now being psychographic data analytics over demographic data. The competition is no longer about wanting to know how many people live in this city, so can I spread information about my products, services or ideas, in the hopes of catching a few. The competition is now about finding out how many people have a particular need so I can present a custom-made solution to their challenges. It is no longer about casting my net in the hopes of catching as much fish as possible, but it is now about going where the fish are. It is no longer about doing it this way because we have always done it this way, but doing it in the way that best captures the needs of the people now and moves them to a better future.
Today companies that are less than 20years old have upstaged competitors with decades and even centuries of experience. Jeff Bezos’ Amazon was written off by pundits early in its life because it was assumed it could never compete against bigger book sellers that basically controlled the distribution network, but today it is a behemoth that sells practically everything that human beings use, not just books. Hilton, a company with over a hundred years’ experience in hospitality is valued at about 39billion UD Dollars whereas Airbnb, which is less than 20years old and doesn’t own properties of its own is valued at over 90billion US Dollars. Whereas Uber, a company that is less than 15 years old, has a market capitalization of 92billion Dollars, just by connecting drivers who own cars with passengers who need a ride, Ford a much older manufacturer of automobiles is valued at less than 50billion US Dollars.
The most dominant companies of this era, are those that have found ways to serve large numbers of people with solutions based on an analytical understanding of human behaviour, AKA Data. Companies like Nike, and later Apple, Microsoft, Google and Facebook, have understood this fact for awhile now and the rest have to follow to find their way in a fast-changing world. The realm of politics has not been left out as the Barrack Obama campaign of 2008 marked the beginning of technology-based campaigning, which resonated with people beyond the usual barriers of partisanship, race and religion.
Being able to navigate the new age with multiple platforms and multiple gatekeepers across these platforms, which continue to change practically on a daily basis at a dizzying pace, requires a knowledge of what is constant in the equation: HUMAN BEHAVIOUR. It may have become a more precise science, where ads popup based on what internet users are thinking, but it has always been driven by human behaviour, which technology is only recently enabling us to understand at scale.
Having done it effectively, Barack Obama’s advise to the graduating class of 2020, to “build a community” is most apt, because human are social beings, that have always lived in communities at different levels. As Obama said in his speech to the US High School graduates of 2020 “no one does big things by themselves……………………………..we’re going to have to do it together”. Indeed if you are going to make a success of this world that is changing before us, you are going to have to learn how to collaborate effectively in order to compete effectively, by wielding the tools of data.

OPEN LETTER: Ensuring Effective Implementation of the Infrastructure Support Fund (ISF)

Dear Mr president,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express my concerns regarding the potential decision to unilaterally surrender the new initiative of the Infrastructure Support Fund (ISF) to the state governments. Instead, I strongly recommend that the federal government supervises and co-equity finances the ISF, taking into account the antecedental experiences we have witnessed in the past.

As we embark on this ambitious infrastructure development initiative, it is essential to recognize that nobody will drive and implement the vision like the owner. The federal government, as the custodian of national interests, possesses the necessary resources, expertise, and oversight mechanisms to ensure the successful execution of the ISF. By maintaining a central role in the project implementation, the federal government can uphold the principles of passion, dedication, accountability, and transparency, which are vital to delivering the dividends of development to the people and meeting the expectations of Nigerians at the grassroots level.

Here are a few key reasons why I believe the federal government should retain a significant role in the supervision and co-equity financing of the ISF:

1. National Vision and Consistency: The federal government is responsible for setting and implementing the national vision. By maintaining control over the ISF, the federal government can ensure that infrastructure projects align with national development goals and are consistent across all states. This approach will help avoid discrepancies and disparities in the implementation of the ISF.

2. Resource Allocation and Efficiency: The federal government possesses the necessary financial resources to ensure the equitable distribution of funds for infrastructure development. By directly coordinating the financing, the government can allocate resources efficiently, considering factors such as population density, economic potential, and regional disparities. This will help address the infrastructure deficit and promote balanced development across the country.

3. Expertise and Technical Capacity: The federal government has access to technical expertise and knowledge required for effective project planning, execution, and monitoring. By leveraging this expertise, the government can provide guidance to state governments, assisting them in overcoming challenges and ensuring the successful completion of infrastructure projects. This approach will guarantee that projects are executed with the highest standards of quality and adherence to established timelines.

4. Accountability and Transparency: The federal government, due to its national mandate, is better equipped to enforce accountability and transparency in the implementation of the ISF. By maintaining oversight, the government can establish robust monitoring mechanisms, conduct audits, and ensure that funds are utilized appropriately. This will help prevent mismanagement, corruption, and unnecessary delays in project completion.

In conclusion, I urge the federal government to retain a central role in supervising and co-equity financing the Infrastructure Support Fund. By doing so, we can ensure the effective implementation of infrastructure projects, guarantee the delivery of dividends to the people, and meet the expectations of Nigerians at the grassroots level. It is essential to prioritize passion, dedication, accountability, and transparency throughout the entire process, and the federal government is best positioned to uphold these principles.

Hon Philip Agbese (APC-Benue), representing Ado/ Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, has commended President Bola Tinubu for appointing the new service chiefs led by Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Christopher Musa.

Agbese, in a statement on Monday, said the move is timely and strategic in the fight against terrorists and other criminal elements in the country.

According to him, the current security heads have started on a strong footing, taking the war to the criminals.

He said they have already shown enthusiasm, vigor, and patriotism for the job with fresh ideas, and strategies to achieve their targets.

Agbese also said that the security heads have developed a workable template and are in sync with each other unlike in the past where synergy was an issue.

He noted that Maj-Gen Musa has formulated and executed policies, and programs towards the highest attainment of national security and operational competence of the Armed Forces.

The congressman said Gen. Musa’s tenure as Force Commander, Operation HADIN KAI, helped to restore the peace in the North-east region and those displaced returned home.

Agbese added that the issues of the welfare of the frontline troops and entire personnel are already getting top attention from the CDS.

Famed for decimating bandits, cattle rustlers, and terrorists in the North West and North Central, Agbese noted that the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, has expanded his warfare drive to the entire nation.

He revealed that the body language of the service chiefs is already sending shivers down the spine of troublemakers in the country.

The federal lawmaker, therefore, expressed confidence in their capacity to win the battle against insecurity within six months.

He said all hands must be on deck and urged Nigerians to give the necessary support to the security chiefs.

Agbese said citizens must be ready to engage security agents at all times to defeat the lingering security challenge.

He, however, warned those behind the insurgency, banditry, and other crimes to have a change of mind as their end is near.
