*Independent Democratic Monitors Hails Appeal Court Ruling Affirming Gov Alia's Victory*

The Independent Democratic Monitors (IDM) has welcomed the Appeal Court ruling affirming Hyacinth Alia's victory as the elected governor of Benue State.

In a statement signed by Dr. James Bawa, its Executive Secretary, the group said the outcome has laid credence to the governorship tribunal which was also in the favour of Governor Alia and his deputy, Dr Sam Ode.

Recall that the appellate court earlier today dismissed an appeal brought before it by the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Titus Uba challenging the election of Alia.

In a unanimous judgment, the court resolved all three issues formulated for determination against Uba and PDP for various reasons.

Bawa says the ruling is a testament to the confidence that the Benue people have in Governor Alia and must be respected by all and sundry.

“This outcome has laid credence to the Benue State Elections Petition Tribunal which was also in Alia's favour. We appreciate the due diligence done by the judiciary in arriving at this conclusion.

“This affirmation of the victory is a pointer that the judicial system in our country has evolved, can be trusted and relied upon. Not only that, the judicial process was thorough and deep, as all the issues were delved into without leaving any stone unturned.

"The justices stood against every attempt to induce them. The opposition tried its usual gimmicks of blackmail, intimidation and campaign of calumny but that too didn't work because today the judiciary has proven to be the last hope of the common man.

"We want to use this medium to urge the opposition to support the governor. We also believe now is the time for work and action. Governor Alia has shown capacity. He is on track" .
Politics / Reps Urge Tinubu To Sign DICON, Armed Forces Trust Fund Bills Into Law by aguele(m): 2:46pm On Nov 19, 2023
Insecurity: Reps urge Tinubu to sign Defence Industries Corporation, Armed Forces Trust Fund Bills into law

House of Representatives has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to, as a matter of national importance, assent to the two Bills recently reintroduced and passed by the 10th Assembly, which bother on providing support for the Armed Forces and the Defence.

Recall that the two bills, Defence Industries Corporation (DICON) Bill and the Armed Forces Trust Fund Bill, were passed by the 9th Assembly but could not receive the assents of President Muhammad Buhari before the expiration of his administration.

The Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, while speaking at the closing ceremony of a 2-day post inuaguration retreat organised for members of the House Committee on Defence by the National Defence College, Abuja on Friday; said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu usually gives attention to activities of the National Assembly and the people, and as such, would ensure the bills will not suffer under this dispensation.

According to him, the 10th House, under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, would continue to work for the overall good of the Nigerian populace.

Stressing that the security of lives and property is one of major mandates of government, the Deputy Speaker added that the Parliament would ensure the needed logistics that will effectively energize the work of the Armed Forces are in place.

Speaking on the DICON Bill, Kalu said, "with the Bill, there will be a stimulation of local content, in manufacturing the tools and the equipments needed to keep our nation safe.

"It is a call on Mr. President to do it and do it as urgently as possible. So that some of the funding contracts of the military at the moment will be converted into military industrial complexes.

"And I can assure you, alot of value addition to what we do with our Defence. So that the nearby countries, they will be coming here to purchase that which our ingenuity and innovations through technology is able to produce".

Kalu further stated that, local content should not only be with oil and gas, adding that, "we should be seen with the expression of our local innovation and ingenuity. The target is nation’s security through industrialisation. This will stimulate our local economy and attract patronage from all countries in africa and beyond".

The Bill, sponsored by Hon. Babajimi Benson, fmember representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency of Lagos State, seeks to authorise the agency to produce and supply arms and ammunition in Nigeria, in addition to the exclusive right to purchase manufacture and sale of explosives (subject to the provisions of the Explosives Act).

The Bill will also empower the agency to set up subsidiaries in partnership with local and international companies towards meeting the material needs of the armed forces and other security agencies through wholesale ownership or acquiring equities in enterprises with relevant products.

On the Armed Forces Trust Fund Bill, the Deputy Speaker said, it would enable the Nigeria's Armed Forces to operate outside the usual envelope funding system, as it would create more avenues for findings that are available for other countries.

"We are in support of the Armed Forces Support Fund Bill, which was also presented and sponsored by my friend, Hon. Jimi Benson in the 9th Assembly. Some of the members here present were not there. I was a member of that committee, so I knew that he sponsored that Bill.

"Gone are the days when you depend on envelope funding for military and the Armed Forces. Many of you have said it here, over and over again; giving solid reasons why such restrictive funding strategy is inimical to the core mandate that the Military, the Defence, wishes to achieve.

"Therefore, by this Bill, we will be opening up other extra supports, in terms of funding for the Defence, the Armed Forces", Kalu added.

Politics / 500 Lawyers Storm Appeal Court Over Plateau  Pdp's Attack On The Judiciary by aguele(m): 11:47am On Nov 17, 2023
.... say its evil to denigrate Nigeria's defenceless justices

Over 500 lawyers this morning stormed the court of appeal in Abuja to demand an urgent end to the campaign of calumny against the justices of the court by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The lawyers unanimously said it is an evil act to continously denigrate the defenceless justices.

Led by the lawyer of Conscience,  its Convener,  Sylvanus Okpe said the actions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are, at best, an assault on the judiciary due to the avalanche of sponsored diatribes against the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Plateau State.

He said as a body of lawyers dedicated to the defense of the rule of law and democracy in Nigeria, it wish to draw His Lordship's attention to the implication of the actions of the PDP on the reputation and integrity of the Court of Appeal.

"While it is succinct to state that the Justices of the Court of Appeal delivered a sound judgment in line with the provisions of the law, the diatribe perpetuated by the PDP  smacks of mockery and an attempt to ridicule the judiciary.

"It must be stated that the PDP acted in breach of a subsisting court order in a suit marked PLD/J/304/2021, which directed it to conduct a fresh Congress involving all the 17 Local Government Areas in Plateau State.

"The implication of a breach of a subsisting court order amounts to a lack of party structure, which is a breach of Section 84 (13) of the Electoral Act as amended, “where a political party fails to comply with the provisions of this Act in the conduct of its primaries, its candidate for election shall not be included in the election for the particular position in issue.”

"As His Lordship may be aware, the violation implies that the PDP candidates in the National Assembly elections could be regarded as null and void for lacking party structure" he said

The Supreme Court, in its ruling in May 2019, nullified the elections of all the candidates of the All Progressives Congress in Zamfara State in the 2019 general elections for failing to conduct primaries. This conformed to the provisions of the law that held that political parties must conduct ward congresses. As in the case of Zamfara state, the All Progressive Congress didn't have a structure, so the nominations of candidates for elections were null and void.

Okpe said It has become a stock in trade of the PDP to sacrifice facts on the altar of selfishness in an insatiable quest to build something on nothing, as in the case of Plateau State. This much has been evident in the serial campaign of calumny launched by the PDP against the rulings of the Court of Appeal.

"We observe that the ultimate aim is to cause disrepute to the Justices of the Court of Appeal and discredit the judiciary's impartiality in Nigeria. This action is an affront and an assault that must be rebuffed.

"His Lordship may wish to be informed that the reputation and integrity of the appellate court is at stake. The issues canvassed by the PDP lack merit and substance, and as such, the judiciary must not succumb to blackmail to ensure that Justice is served.

"We'd like to call on His Lordship to stand firm in defence of the sanctity of the appellate court in the dispensation of Justice. The impartiality of the judiciary in Nigeria is never in doubt. An independent, strong, respected, and respectable judiciary is indispensable for the impartial administration of Justice in a democratic State.

"Lessons must be learned on the implications of flouting court orders. Contempt of court is an affront to the authority and dignity of the court. A court order must be obeyed until it is set aside on appeal. There is no evidence that the subsisting court order in the conduct of fresh ward congress for the PDP in Plateau state was appealed.

"His Lordship may wish to grant our prayers that the Court of Appeal rejects the position of the PDP in Plateau state with regards to the outcome of the judgement of the Court of Appeal sacking PDP members of the National Assembly for lack of party structure that rendered their eligibility to stand for election null and void" he said

Politics / Judiciary: Coalition Hails Judgements In Plateau, Warns PDP, Others Against Blac by aguele(m): 4:02pm On Nov 16, 2023
Judiciary: Coalition hails judgements in Plateau, warns PDP, others against blackmail

In what appears as the biggest solidarity match in the city of Abuja; a Coalition of Civil Society Groups, has thrown its weight behind the judiciary in Nigeria, saying it has lived up to its expectations by Nigerians.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja during a solidarity rally in support of the judiciary, the Coalition, made up of Northern Christian Civil Rights Movement; the African Patriots; the Guardians of Democracy and others with membership over 10,000; specifically commended the judiciary for the recent judgements in various election petitions Plateau.

The Coalition also sounded note of warnings to the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) and others, against what it described as "blackmail" of the Court of Appeal.

The convener of Guardians of Democracy, Mr. Adamu Kabir, in his speech, explained that the Coalition expressed profound gratitude and appreciation to the esteemed Justices of the Appeal Court; and honored their unwavering commitment to safeguarding the principles of justice, equity, fairness, and democracy in the nation.

"Today, we stand united to celebrate the triumph of the judiciary over the nefarious attempts by political parties to manipulate and undermine the rule of law.

"However, we, the Guardians of Democracy, stand firm in our belief in the judiciary's ability to uphold the rule of law and deliver justice for all Nigerians", he said.

He further stated that in recent months, his group witnessed a disturbing trend of attempts to undermine the judiciary.

These attempts according to him, came from various quarters, including politicians, lawyers, and even members of the public, adding that, these individuals have sought to influence the judiciary's decisions "through intimidation, bribery, and even threats of violence".

Other members of the coalition expressed their firm believe in the principles of equity, fairness, and justice, adding that it is the duty of the judiciary to uphold these principles without compromise.

Meanwhile, Convener, Northern Christian Civil Rights Movement, Mr. Tobias Ogbe, in his speech, emphatically cautioned the PDP in Plateau State to desist from the unholy enterprise in the interest of peace and tranquility.

"It must be stated that the resort to cheap blackmail and propaganda serves no good and does not augur well for preserving democracy in Nigeria. Ironically, this has been one of the potent weapons of destabilization that political parties and actors employ to destabilize the system when election results do not go their way." Ogbe said.

He therefore stated that the case of Plateau presents a vivid example of how politicians selfishly heat the polity and end up causing a conflict of unimaginable proportions, adding that the enterprise must stop, and those responsible must desist from such ignoble endeavors.

Politics / Edo 2024: Elders Move To Reconcile Obaseki, Ex Aides And Others. by aguele(m): 1:56pm On Nov 16, 2023
Odubu, Osagie, Akerele, Idahagbon others listed.....

There are indications that following the peaceful gestures and reconciliation between Adams Oshiomhole and Godwin Obaseki of Edo state, Nigerians and indeed the people of Edo state are in for better days ahead 2024 elections.

Information reaching us indicates that some elder statesmen have volunteered to broker peace between the governor and his former aides and top chieftains of the APC in Edo state. We learnt that recent altercation between the governor and his former chief of staff has not gone down well with certain mutual friends of the duo hence the call for a truce and reconciliation similar to that of Obaseki and Oshiomhole.

To this extent, top members of APC may have been shortlisted for this reconciliation moves, aside Akerele, former Commissioners who either resigned or were sacked, former Deputy governor Pius Odubu, Hon Samson Osagie, Barr Henry Idahagbon, former Speaker Hon Frank Okiye, Mrs Aisosa Amadasun, Dr (Mrs) Omorede Osifo and few others were named.

The governor is said to be unhappy with the betrayal he has received from the legacy PDP members and the resistance he has received from selling his anointed candidate, hence has decided to reconcile with his old allies in both APC and PDP in order to start the healing process of the state ahead of his last year in office.

Efforts to confirm this story from media adviser, Crusoe Osagie proved futile as he didn't pick his calls from our correspondent.

However, an ex commissioner in the state, speaking to us from London refused to comment as she has not been approached by any of the committee members, she insisted she has nothing personal against Godwin Obaseki.

While the Dan Orbih group have vowed not to allow the governor produce a successor, former Chief of staff Taiwo Akerele had accused the government of non performance.

Its yet to be seen how the elders comprising of religious leaders, traditional rulers, a former governor of the state and retired Justice of the Supreme Court intend to achieve their aims as most of the people listed are not resident in the state and drawn from different political parties.

You will recall that Senator Adams Oshiomhole and Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state have openly confessed that they are friends and have nothing against each other.

Hence it's not surprising that these elder statesmen have decided to extend this reconciliation moves to other political players who have strained relationship with the Governor.

It's yet to be seen how this gesture will impact the processes leading to the 2024 elections in the state.

Sacked Plateau Lawmakers: Thousands Take Mass Rally To Supreme Court, Submit Protest Letter To CJN

Over 1, 000 Nigerians under the auspices of Coalition for Truth and Justice in Africa have held a peaceful rally to the Supreme Court, Abuja, to protest the Appeal Court judgements sacking some People Democratic Party, PDP, lawmakers in Plateau state, from the National Assembly.

Dr. Daniel Okwa, National President of the body said political developments in the state is indeed worrisome and calls for concerns from all well-meaning Nigerians.

According to him, democracy is indeed under threat, if such anomalies are allowed to stand.

In a protest letter to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, the organisation accused some All Progressivea Congress, APC, of claiming some seats in the National Assembly through the courts amd it turned out to be so with the Court of Appeal decision sacking some lawmakers from Plateau state.

Parts of the letter to the CNN read, "The Coalition for Truth and Justice believes that the judgment of the Appeal Court in Abuja is a case of injustice, else, how could one explain a situation where lawmakers of the All Progressive Congress (APC) would boast and predict the outcome of the Court of Appeal judgment even before the pronouncement.

"This is unacceptable and indicates that the justice regime in Nigeria has been thrown to the dogs. What happened in Plateau State is an aberration of immeasurable proportion. There is a distinction between a pre-election matter and a post-election matter.

"The Supreme Court has established this fact on several occasions. It is now a wonder why the Appeal Court would act otherwise and in a despicable manner that tends to truncate our nascent democracy.

"The Coalition for Truth and Justice entirely condemns the actions of the justices of the Appeal Court that sat in Abuja. They displayed insensitivity to the electoral choices of the people. This is a worrisome trend that the Chief Justice of Nigeria must address.

"This is on the heels that the Judiciary, the world over, is regarded as the last hope of the commoner. This presupposes that it is the only place the commoner can get justice. The function of the Judiciary is not to twist the truth or fabricate facts but to interpret the law. The consequence of the interpretation of the law is justice.

"However, what played out in Plateau state negates the Judiciary's position as the common's last hope. The Judiciary is for sale to the highest bidder in Nigeria, if such positions could be taken without recourse to the implication of such on the psychological state of the people.

"The Coalition for Truth and Justice is using this protest to drive the point that justice in Nigeria should not be reserved for a section of the country or any political party. What happened in Plateau should not be allowed to stand or repeat itself. The implication of such is that the reputation of the judicial arm of government would be eroded."

Politics / Ajulo Commends Ondo Elders For Proactive Steps In Political Crisis Resolution by aguele(m): 6:09am On Nov 14, 2023
In a significant move towards restoring political tranquillity in Ondo State, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, OON, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Egalitarian Mission for Africa (EMA), has applauded the wisdom demonstrated by Ondo State elders.

Ajulo said the State has, again, demonstrated its resourcefulness in the area of politics, governance and human development. He said "Ondo elders have demonstrated the uniqueness of the Omoluabis we are known for and it is commendable"

The state has been grappling with a political crisis, exacerbated by the absence of Governor Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu and the contentious impeachment process of Deputy Governor Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

At a pivotal meeting hosted at the residence of Afenifere leader Pa Reuben Fasoranti on Monday, Ondo State Elders and Leaders Forum converged on the residence of Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti to discuss the peace and development of the State amidst current political turbulence.

Egalitarian Mission for Africa, a not-for-profit international Organisation, which Ajulo is the Chairman, amid the continued unrest, had on 16th October in a widely publicised press statement urged the State elders to intervene in the crisis which has generated unwarranted enmity among political players and their followers in the State and indirectly disrupted smooth governance. He made phone contact with some of the elders concerning the matter.

In the statement, Ajulo speaking for the Organisation expressed optimism in Ondo State's ability to address its challenges independently without external intervention.

He eulogised the elders for heeding the call and rising to help Ondo State in navigating its political challenges, saying "nothing is more crucial than such a meeting at this time"

The lawyer also expressed gratitude to the Leaders and Elders of Ondo State, using Pa Reuben Fasoranti and Bashoun Seinde Arogbofa as points of contact. He appreciated the royal fathers and religious leaders present at the meeting for heeding the call for peace.

"Again, I want to call on other Ondo State leaders absent from the meeting to unite for the benefit of the State and its people; Chief Olu Falae, General Bajowa, Prince Adetokubo Kayode SAN, former Governor Olusegun Mimiko, former Deputy Governors, former Speakers of the House of Assembly as well as Chief Judge and head of the State judiciary.

Also, I call on Senators representing Ondo State at the National Assembly, using Senator Niyi Adegbomire, SAN as a point of contact, Ondo State Representatives members, other traditional rulers using the Deji of Akure, Oba Ogunlade Aladetoyinbo as contact, and religious heads with the Archbishop of Ondo Diocese of Anglican Communion, Bishop Simeon Borokini and Chief Imam of Akure, Alhaji Abdulmalik Yayi-Akorede as contacts respectively to join this noble cause." He said.

Ajulo expressed that the assignment is a joint effort, saying "the collective efforts of everyone are important in fostering a harmonious and progressive Ondo State."

Apoi Community Leaders Raise Alarm Over Soldiers Hijack of Election Results In Southern Ijaw

Community leaders in Apoi Community, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, have expressed deep concern and alarm over the reported invasion of Apoi Community by soldiers in a military gunboat with registration number NA6DA3. The incursion is alleged to be an attempt to confiscate election results from yesterday's governorship election, specifically those belonging to Apoi Ward 15 in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.

Eyewitnesses and community members report that the soldiers arrived in the community, creating a tense atmosphere and causing anxiety among residents. The soldiers are said to have demanded access to election materials and results, raising suspicions about the intention behind this intrusion.

The reported hijack of the election results suggests a potential interference with the electoral process, undermining the credibility of the recently conducted governorship election.

The invasion by the armed soldiers has caused distress among the residents of Apoi, and community leaders are calling for immediate intervention to address the situation.

Finally, the group said It is imperative that the democratic process is protected from any form of interference or intimidation, as they appeal to all relevant stakeholders to ensure the integrity of the electoral results.

*PDP Raises Alarm Over Alleged Plot to Compromise INEC Officials in Brass LGA, Bayelsa State Governorship Election*

The Peoples Democratic Party Vanguard has raised alarm over suspected plot to manipulate the outcome of the Bayelsa State Governorship Election by the APC and some officials of INEC in the Brass Local Government Area of the state.

A statement by the Publicity Secretary, of the group, Prince Mike Ebele alleged that there is a fresh plots by the APC and certain
officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to compromise the outcome of the Guber election in Brass Local GovernmentArea, where the PDP, is in an early lead.

He said the group has been made aware of fresh plots by the defeated All Progressives Congress (APC) and certain compromised officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Brass, to manipulate the outcome of the Governorship election in the State.

"It has come to our knowledge that the APC and its candidate, having realized that they cannot defeat Governor Duoye Diri, given his popularity and determination of the people, are now putting pressure on INEC to alter already collated and declared results in other Polling Units where no cases of malpractice or disruption of election took place.

This is part of Sylva’s plot to facilitate the manipulation and/or alteration of the already declared results in favour of the APC against the expressed Will of the people.

"We hereby in very strong terms caution INEC and the APC not to, under any circumstance or guise whatsoever, tamper with the results already announced and declared at the Polling Units where election has been concluded and Returns made by the Returning Officers without any reported case of disruption or cancellation, as this will be vehemently resisted by our people."

The people of Brass already know the figures from the Polling Units as announced by INEC. Any attempt by the APC and INEC officials to tamper with the results already declared is a clear recipe for crisis.

"The PDP remains firmly on ground in Bayelsa State. Our Party and Candidate, Governor Diri are in clear lead." The statement added
Politics / Guber Poll: Police attack Protesting Bayelsa Women by aguele(m): 3:58pm On Nov 10, 2023
In a disturbing turn of events, peaceful women protesters in Nembe town were reportedly subjected to tear gas by the police during their demonstration earlier today, accusing the Bayelsa Police Commissioner of bias ahead of the upcoming Saturday governorship election in the state. Election monitors in the state, have strongly condemned the use of force against the women, emphasizing the need for a peaceful electoral process.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the women, who had gathered to voice their concerns over alleged bias by the Bayelsa Police Commissioner, were met with tear gas and forceful dispersal by the police. The protesters, many of whom were carrying placards and chanting slogans, had accused the commissioner of favoritism and called for a fair and transparent electoral process.

The Bayelsa Police Commissioner has come under criticism from various quarters for his handling of security matters in the run-up to the election. The women protesters alleged that the commissioner's actions were politically motivated and aimed at influencing the outcome of the governorship election in favor of the candidate of the All Progress Congress in the election.

Election monitors, including local and international observers, have strongly condemned the use of tear gas on peaceful protesters, emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic values and allowing citizens to express their opinions without fear of reprisal.

Human rights organizations and civil society groups have also called for an immediate investigation into the incident, urging authorities to hold accountable those responsible for the use of force against the women. They argue that such actions not only violate the right to peaceful assembly but also undermine the credibility of the electoral process.

Political tension has been escalating in Bayelsa State in the lead-up to the governorship election, with various parties and candidates vying for support. The use of force against peaceful protesters adds another layer of concern as the state prepares for the crucial electoral exercise on Saturday.

The Bayelsa State Police Department has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident. As the situation unfolds, stakeholders are closely watching to see how authorities respond to the allegations of bias and the use of force against the women protesters.

Political Parties Reject Appeal Court Judgement On Plateau Reps, Senate Elections

Political parties under the aegis of the Conference of Allied Political Parties (CAPP) has criticized the Appeal Court judgement in the Plateau State National Assembly a rape of democracy. A statement signed by Dr Amos Sani, its director of publicity, described what happened in Plateau state as insensitive and a gross abuse of the judicial process.

"The decision to declare the Minister of Labour, Simon Lalong, winner of the Plateau South Senatorial election is a travesty of justice. For the Appeal court to declare Simon Lalong winner because the PDP didn't have a structure is insane and rape of democracy."

"On what basis would the APC canvass that the PDP as a party didn't have a structure? What is the business of the APC with the structure of another party? It indicates that the justices of the Appeal Court delivered a kangaroo judgment."

He further stated that the actions of the Appeal Court tend to set a dangerous precedence in the country.

" The judiciary is now for sale to the highest bidder. It has succeeded in turning the law on its head. This is a worrisome enterprise that should be discontinued for its potency to truncate our nascent democracy."

" This is a clear case of rape of our democracy, and any well-meaning Nigerian must reject it in its ramification. There is no sense in the judgment. It read like a prepared speech which smacks of pecuniary gains."

The group further alleged that the justices of the Appeal Court that entertained the matter acted like they had been induced monetarily to give a damning verdict.

"The Appeal Court judgment smacks of a rehashed endeavor unknown to law. It is worrisome that the justices of the Appeal Court would elect to throw caution in the wind."

The Appeal Court in Abuja recently upheld the tribunal's judgment, which declared the Minister of Labour, Simon Lalong, winner of the Plateau South Senatorial election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission had declared Napoleon Bali of the Peoples Democratic Party winner with 148,844 votes, while Lalong scored 91 674 to come second in the February 25 elections.

The Election Petition Tribunal nullified Bali’s election on the grounds that the PDP did not have a proper party structure and, therefore, could not file candidates for the elections.

In a unanimous judgment read by Justice Muhammad Tukur, the tribunal said the PDP, having no structure, lacked the right to take part in the election.
The three-person panel of the Appeal Court, led by Justice Elfrieda Williams-Dawodu, held that the matter was both a pre and post-election matter, adding that the tribunal was correct to have looked at the issue.

In a related development, the Plateau South People Assemblies (PSPA), an umbrella body of six LGAs that makes up the Plateau South Senatorial district, has condemned the ongoing waves of judicial pronouncements upturning the elections of elected representatives of the people of Plateau state at the state and National Assembly.

“We are shocked by the pattern of the judgments, nullifying elections of some of our representatives, under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) over what is termed as improper nomination and sponsorship of candidates by the PDP.”

"We must further state that these developments are a great threat to democracy in Nigeria today."

Politics / Subsidy Removal: Northern Csos Laud Tinubu, NEDC by aguele(m): 6:58am On Nov 09, 2023
The Northern Transformation Agenda (NTA) has praised the efforts of President Bola Tinubu towards rehabilitating and rebuilding the North-East sub-region.

In a statement signed by Patriot Salisu Luqman, the group said the President demonstrated his love for the people of the zone with his selection of the board of the North East Development Commission (NEDC).

In particular, Luqman said the reappointment of Mohamed Goni Alkali as the Managing Director affirms President Tinubu's penchant for hard work, capacity and integrity.

He said having overachieved in his first four years, Alkali's return didn't come as a surprise to many, especially those he provided succour to by helping to reintegrate them back into society.

Luqman said Goni has continued from where he stopped, implementing his well-designed blueprint for the North-East to cope with the fuel subsidy removal.

Under Goni, he added that the NEDC is strategically assessing, reviewing, and implementing key crucial programs that will drastically ameliorate the poverty matrix in the North-East Region.

Luqman said the NEDC's interventions have touched many aspects including agriculture, education, job creation/ entrepreneurship, health, infrastructure and many others.

"The Commission is planning to build a mental health support centre for victims of Boko Haram insurgency in the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Maiduguri. This is highly commendable," he said.

" A fully equipped ambulance and N2 million cash was recently given to the management team of the General Hospital in Marama Town of Hawul local government area of Borno State.

"Over 60 Electrical Technicians (linesmen) from across the six states of the North-East were recently trained also.

"8,000 traders whose goods and services were destroyed following the February 26, 2023 fire inferno that erupted at the Maiduguri Monday Market, Borno state have been compensated.

"These and many others have been achieved by Goni in less than three months. This is a man who clearly wants a better life for the people.

"Recently, he led board members to an impromptu on-site inspection of multi-billion naira projects in Bauchi State, including 300 housing units and a mega school in Dungal Village along Jos road.

"Goni expressed dissatisfaction at the pace of the job. We believe that with men like him, Tinubu will fulfill his Renewed Hope Agenda."

Politics / 100 Csos Reject Appeal Court Judgement On Plateaus Reps, Senate by aguele(m): 7:47pm On Nov 08, 2023
_...say it is a threat to democracy_

No fewer than 100 civil society organisations have rejected the Appeal Court judgments for Plateau State National Assembly elections.

The group under the auspices of the Coalition for Justice in Africa described the ruling as biased and targeted at members of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The Convener of the coalition, Daniel Okwa who addressed a press conference in Abuja said the action of the court is a rape of democracy.

He said since pre-election matters are decided before elections, there is no locus standi under the law for it to be used to form a judgment.

He said, "Ironically, this played out during the Appeal Court judgment that removed from office some members of the PDP in the National Assembly. It is indeed worrisome that the judgment of the justices of the Appeal Court was in contradiction with the position of the Supreme Court.

Okwa said the Coalition for Justice in Africa is at a loss as to how and why an internal party affair should be in the interest of another party and on which basis a judgment was passed. It is disturbing and distressing that the revered justices of the Appeal Court would turn the law against its head.

He said the implication of the decision of the justices of the Appeal Court is that the judgment would set a dangerous precedence and a gateway to endless litigation in the future.

"The wisdom of dealing with pre-election matters before polls has now been undone, with the consequence that those who contested and won political office will now be spending the time they should have committed to delivering their mandate in court," he said.

"The Coalition for Justice in Africa frowns on such a miscarriage of justice. It is our conviction that the internal affairs of a political party do not have anything to do with winning elections.

"This is a rape of democracy that tends to discredit the reputation of the judicial arm of government. The judgment is political and not on its merit. The assumption that the judiciary is the people’s hope has been grossly eroded.

"It is also evident that some powerful forces have taken control of the country’s judiciary. These vested interests would spare nothing in their insatiable desire to continue to rape democracy in Nigeria" he added

Okwa said It is unfortunate that they also explored the gullibility of the justices of the Appeal Court into a macabre dance.

He added: "If this is not the case, how on earth would a party challenge the primary elections of another party and, on that basis, get a judgment in its favor?

"It is an abracadabra that all well-meaning democrats in Nigeria should resist. Democracy is on the verge of annihilation with the disposition of the justices of the Appeal Court in the dispensation of justice.

"Where is the principle of a meddlesome interloper if APC will challenge the primaries of another party and succeed? This is dangerous for our democracy. The Supreme Court must address this evil decision in any future Appeal before it.

"The Supreme Court has stated the importance of locus standi in pre-election matters in the case ALAHASSAN & ANOR V. ISHAKU & OTHERS (2016) LPELR-40083(SC) (Pp. 39 paras. D), where it held thus:

“As I said earlier, the appellant is a member of the PDP, not APC, and even if he is a member of the APC, he would have no locus to challenge the nomination of the 1st Respondent as he is not one of the aspirants who participated in the primary election.

"There is a plethora of cases and decisions on the issue of whether a member of a political party can sue another party for non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act. This is what played out at the Appeal Court, and it is such a shame that the custodians of the law have bastardized the law.

"The Coalition for Justice in Africa wishes to state in unequivocal terms that this decision questions our values as a nation if this brazen rape of democracy is allowed to stand.

"The judgment has painted the judiciary in a negative light. It’s clear and evident that while the cases were before the Appeal Court, some highly placed individuals took advantage of the gullibility of our judicial officers to desecrate our democracy.

"We are further concerned that the Court of Appeal has wilfully decapitated the opposition in the country since fewer PDP lawmakers mean the country has edged one step closer to becoming a one-party dictatorship.

"The few PDP lawmakers left in the National Assembly are now easier targets for the ruling party should it decide to clamp down on the opposition. This is a consideration our dear judicial officers should have borne in mind before reintroducing pre-election matters into post-election litigation.

"Questions on our values as a nation will be asked if this brazen rape of democracy is allowed to stand. It is our firm conviction that the Supreme Court will address this anomaly in the fullness of time and save our democracy from destruction."

Politics / Nscdc's Impact On The Renewed Hope Agenda by aguele(m): 4:13pm On Nov 07, 2023
By Muyiwa Adetokumbo

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) was established by Act 3 of 2003 with numerous security responsibilities. This Act was amended in 2007 to strengthen and empower the Corps for better service delivery.

The Corps has carried out its activities in line with the provision of the Act and has, over the period under review, succeeded in making landmark achievements. Stakeholders in the country have corroborated this much. However, the activities of the NSCDC gathered momentum with the appointment of Ahmed Abubakar Audi as the commandant-general in 2021.

Since then, there has been no looking back. The Commandant-General, in a short space, introduced notable reforms that indeed placed the organization in good stead to deliver on its mandate.

I have long advocated that what is needed in the country is leadership. Once we get the leadership question right, things will naturally fall into place. The NSCDC example is a worthy one that should be emulated. Ahmed Abubakar Audi brought to bear his passion and commitment on the job, and the results have been pouring in in truckload.

One area that has gone unnoticed is the issue of staff welfare, which, in my opinion, is instructive and in line with the Renewed Hope mantra of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration. This is aside from the clearing of the backlog of promotions that have stalled for several years.

Today, the promotion backlog has been cleared, and staffers get promoted when due. The implication of this is that the staff morale received a tremendous boost. It is now common to find the NSCDC recording tangible achievements in its operational mandate.

Sometime in 2022, the Commandant General was recognized for exceptional performance. He was conferred with the National Honour of Order of the Federal Republic of Nigeria alongside other eminent personalities who have distinguished themselves in service to the country.

In appreciation, the Commandant General stated that he was grateful to be acknowledged and awarded with such a National Honour, and this signifies the need to put in more effort towards improving national security.

Under the leadership of the Commandant General, the NSCDC has been rejuvenated and has not only recorded a string of successes in the Protection of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure and conviction of arrested suspects but has ensured regular and prompt sharing of actionable intelligence and effective synergy with other security agencies.
This is leadership at work and why the NSCDC example should be emulated nationwide. This reinforces that once there is a will, there will be a way. The stark reality on the ground requires proactive actions, using the NSCDC as an example.

Some might not fully grasp the impact of the NSCDC on our national life because some of its interventions have yet received adequate media attention. This is understandable because the Commandant General does not play to the gallery. He is a silent achiever whose short tenure has accomplished what successive administrations could not achieve.

I understand his philosophy is hinged on getting the job done first before any other thing. This is what is at play at the NSCDC today. But we must learn to give honor to whom it is due. So, in a way, this piece is in celebration and commendation of passion, patriotism, and commitment to nation-building.

We need more of such individuals in positions of authority in the country. The country needs people passionate about nation-building and people who see service to the country as a topmost priority.

I must not fail to mention the supervisory role of the Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who, within months, has displayed strong leadership in ensuring that all the agencies under his watch align with the Renewed Hope mantra of the present administration.

This was essential and a deviation from the norm that promotes a lack of transparency and accountability in governance. Once we get it right from the top, other components would naturally fall in line, and the rest would be history.

If this tempo is sustained, Nigerians would experience a new lease of life. Things that appeared as rocket science would look easy. This is what the country needs at this critical point of our existence. This has played out in recent months, and it is worthy of commendation.

I would like to use this medium to commend the interior minister and the Commandant General of the NSCDC for rising to the occasion. It is not Uhuru yet, as there is room for improvement. It is not the time to rest on oars. Instead, it is the time to redouble efforts.

I am glad with the efforts so far, which is indicative of the fact that in no distant time, the country will overcome its challenges. As a people and a country, we must understand that our destiny is in our hands, and the only option we have is to make concerted efforts toward making the country work.

The NSCDC example is a good one, and I want to encourage the organization's leadership to continue to give its best. I salute the passion and commitment of the NSCDC Commandant General towards purposeful leadership by his actions. He has written his name in gold.

Politics / Towards Building A New Edo by aguele(m): 2:12pm On Nov 07, 2023
By Kassim Afegbua

I returned from Benin City yesterday with a huge feeling of nostalgia, reminiscencing on the fond memories of events that dominated my engagements in 2016, after a fulfilling service as Commissioner for Information in the state. I looked back with nostalgia, reflecting on the time when Senator Adams Oshiomhole was in the saddle in the state. Recalled his fierce quest to see a new Edo, his vehement fear of failure, and his deep level of commitment to ensure that he left footprints of achievements across the state. His red roof revolution in the schools then was cheering news to many Edolites, his health sector reforms was another template of achievements coupled with the huge infrastructure ramp up in roads, and effective flood control. Adams Oshiomhole's well-intentioned administration was the denouement of recovering the state from inherited rots that dominated the state. In 2008, Adams Oshiomhole was in a hurry to rewrite the ugly state of affairs in the state, by the time he would be leaving. Indeed he was satisfied as he bade farewell to the number one seat, that he had made considerable impact to lift the state from its infrastructural doldrums to olympian celebration of lofty achievements, which the people have not forgotten till date. On Saturday, 4 November, was another rehash of those good years: Adams Oshiomhole sauntered into the arena for the celebration of life of the mother- In-law of the sports maestro, Mike Itemuagbor, in Benin City. As Oshiomhole entered the arena, the shout of "Oshio" rented the air as he made triumphant gestures to the audience. Edo people have a way of appreciating those who led them well, and Adams Oshiomhole is one former Governor the people cannot forget in a hurry. His huge achievements during his eight-years stint renew themselves everyday.

Edo State is presently in a state of quandary, enabled by a government that has paid little attention to important details. Edo state is flustered by a concatenation of developmental issues begging for attention. The intra-city roads wear the soreful eyeglasses of rotten underbelly. Potholes dot the streets in Benin like oasis of water in the desert. Benin City GRA is an embarrassment to any rational mind. With many big houses, many roads have been washed off by agents of denudation. The rain had just stopped when I arrived Benin City, and I saw the drugerous effort of my driver as he tried to navigate the pools of water and run-offs that make the roads almost impassable. The once beautiful GRA is a far cry of its old self. As we chatted on our way , I couldn't help asking questions, in a bid to reconcile what I have read on paper from Obaseki's media rottweilers and the reality I saw on ground. I was completely nonplussed. When I see the Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on Television trying to undercut the Federal Government for neglecting Federal Givernment roads, I see the height of hypocrisy at play, using Federal roads to take the people's attention away from the mess that his township roads have become. Such administrative rot, wickedness and deliberate complacency and neglect of critical infrastructure has been the normative order in a government that is high on profligacy and low on performance. In Edo state, it has become a game of altercation between the government and the people; and the ugly sights of the township roads are quite discomforting.

Obaseki’s government continues its tales by moonlight; tales of backward integration and under-performance, tales of crass abandonment of critical infrastructure, and tales of hypocrisy promoted to the pinnacle of greed and avarice, and functionally fueled by gossip, hate, suspicion and subterfuge. I took time out to travel round the state and I saw how deplorable some of Oshiomhole's projects have become for lack of maintenance by Obaseki, his successor. Each time I watch Governor Obaseki talk about the Federal Government’s deplorable roads around the state, I laugh at the folly of a man whose polluted sense of hypocrisy and selective amnesia has doubled in recent times. He needs to be referred to the Bible passage that addresses his malady. Whatever is in his own eyes cannot be smaller than tree trunks. Aside from turn-key projects which were meant to paint existing buildings of government offices, I didn't see any tangible, legacy projects to speak of in relation to the huge revenue of the state; and federal allocations have increased far beyond what obtained during Adams Oshiomhole's time. Bail-out funds have also been poured into the coffers of the state in recent times: palliatives from the Federal Government have been encouraging, refunds for federal roads that were built and renovated by Adams Oshiomhole also came into the state in billions since Obaseki took over. With all these inflows, the quantum of work done is alarmingly low and not commensurate. Even those with established low IQ ask questions. The main question is, where is Governor Obaseki putting the money?

As it is, Edo State is balkanised and there is an urgent need to build a state cohesion and enhance the usual spirit of camaraderie that formerly bound the Edos together. We are a people of shared commitment and values, with our cultural heritage that defines our identity. Governor Obaseki has blighted that and the state is now in disarray from different perspectives. The Benin Royalty, which used to be the strength of our communal linkages, is "suffering" in the hands of Governor Obaseki; no thanks to the Governor's deliberate effort to hurt its historical ingenuity, by trying to create other Kingdoms in a most abominable manner. When a Governor doesn't connect with the people, the effect is the development of inferior complexes in form of conquistadorial mentality, that assesses every esteemed personality as a threat. The state has lost Chief Anenih, General Ogbemudia, Alhaji Inu-Umoru, Chief Uyigue, and quite a number of political bigwigs who made Edo's politics thick, and have rallying points in each Senatorial District. The vacuums created by the demise of these political heavy weights have not been filled and attempts by Senator Adams Oshiomhole and Chief Lucky Igbinedion to patch up those vacuums have been quashed by a Governor that wants to be the singular and ultimate rallying point. For that reason, Edo is always in the news for the wrong reasons. News of boiling point political temperature, news of supplanting Local Governments with halleluyah boys; instead of the right persons that were voted for, news of poor development and news of insecurity across the state. For how long are we going to be rotating around the same axis and expect different results? The need for a fresh thinking is apposite.

Driven by the urge to offer a new paradigm from what obtains and further buoyed by the desire to ameliorate the pain caused my people by the failure of the present occupants of the Osadebe Avenue, and the despair that now dictates to my people because of the crass hypocrisy that has become the second nature of government in Edo state, I have elected to join the race for the governorship position of the state. Let it be known that unlike some of those being promoted by the incumbent Governor, I have a rich knowledge of the state in terms of demographics and geography, and can help to harness the potentials that the state can boast of. Plus, I have the capacity, courage and boldness and grit to take objective decisions that would add value to the wellbeing of citizens of the state and meet the peoples needs. Also, I have been a champion of good governance in the state, so, when given the opportunity to serve, it will offer me platform to translate my vision and mission for the totality of our people and will have to practice what I preach. I am confident that my understanding of the potentials across the state will help me tap into and explore the opportunities within and even outside of our state, for the overall good of our people. I am known for having the capacity to unite all the forces and factors in the state to create the nexus that would galvanise the people to promote a sense of homogeneity in our dealings and engagements. I want to bring back our lost glory in the past seven years in a manner that would elicit citizens participation in governance and enhance our productivity. We will revive and sustain previous effort of Red Roof Revolution to reclaim our schools, and boost our education sector in a most progressive way in line with modern global benchmarks.

Our present infrastructural decay brought on us by a tactless government with no discernible roadmap was headed for the poor service delivery that we presently witness ab- initio. Bringing on board "strangers" who do not have a grasp of the state to succeed the present government is a sine qua non for another round of ineffectual leadership and that will be most unwise. A leadership that promotes ethnic chauvinism, that promotes greed and self aggrandizement, and one that has shown a marked appetite for primitive acquisition of the most bizarre form., cannot birth anything good for the future. Briefcase business scavengers have taken over Edo state in such whimsical manner, that citizens struggle to be in the know of what transpires in the state. Beware of who is talking to you now, my dear people of Edo State; even those who can't even successfully run a home, are already criss-crossing the state in search of endorsement. Edo state will not travel that familiar route again; a route that foisted a leadership that never cared for our wellbeing or help to grow our collective destiny. The state needs a young, vibrant, result-driven leadership that can connect to the aged and the youths, and help drive the wheel of progress to build a home where peace, love and affection radiates in our heart of hearts and prosperity is assured for all. We must insist on building our state in a manner that furthers our collective aspirations and yearnings irrespective of our political and ideological persuasions. The Edo spirit in us must be consciously nurtured to enrich our sense of oneness and unity of purpose. The task to building Edo of our dream with respect for our traditional institutions and royalties is what will help us to reposition our thought processes for a better Edo state. This is no doubt a huge assignment which I am prepared to undertake in order to reclaim Edo state, and save my fatherland; the heartbeat of the nation.

New Nigeria Diaspora Movement, A Dying Movement Seeking Relevance, Says APC Diaspora Chairmen

As the ragtag busybody that calls itself the Coalition of New Nigeria Diaspora Movement has just found a perfect way to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians at home and the Diaspora with the purported target of raising a whooping $10 million to fight President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the APC Committee of Diaspora Chairmen has sounded the alarms to enable Nigerians be wary of this plan of the non-charlatan body of robbing them of their hard earned money.

In a press release made available by the Publicity Secreatry of the Commiittee of Diaspora Chairmen who also doubles as the Chairman of the party in Canada, Dr Omololu Nick Apata, described the ideas as silly and funny.

In his words, “now if this is not silly, it could be said to be funny. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the elected President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He has passed through so many obstacles, challenges, threats and even sabotage to get to where he is today. The Supreme Court has affirmed his election which enjoyed over 8 million votes from electorates who believe in his capacity to govern the country. Anyone naïve enough to yield their hard-earned money to this unpatriotic bunch will be doing so at their own financial risk and will also be guilty of contributing to the efforts of sore losers and unpatriotic elements who are bent on tarnishing the image of our beautiful country.

“In an election where the coming together of the two main opposition parties could have produced a different outcome, this group of antidemocratic rabblerousers have refused to come to terms with the defeat of their principal. To be certain, these are political mercenaries who have embarked on an inconsequential expedition, flogging a dead horse. But if the financial reward is worth it for them, then they must show their dumb but fanatical paymaster that they are at least doing his bidding. That’s exactly what’s happening here.

“It is laughable when Jackson Ude, a known purveyor of fake news and blackmail is the one in the forefront of this ethnic-laden body. What is patriotic about a bunch of people who are trashing their country’s democratic process just because their leader lost an election? Where is the patriotism in those who have taken their campaign of calumny to the Justices of the Appeal and Supreme Courts? Accepting the outcome of an election especially the one that has been adjudicated by the courts is a big requirement for any successful and progressive democracy. It is however shameful that this group possesses no such credentials, instead they are about to make a big fool of themselves at the global level.

“Why does anyone wonder why the US, and Western Europe and every other country wants to do business with Nigeria under the leadership of President Tinubu? The answer is quite simple. They see and know what the opposition in Nigeria does not know or does not want to acknowledge. Tinubu won the Presidential elections hands down. He is not guilty of all the allegations that have been peddled against him. The Judicial system has come through for Nigerians at such a crucial moment in our political history. These countries know all of these and more. So, Ude and his group should continue with their planned political misadventure that will definitely expose their stupidity the entire world.

“The behaviour of this unpatriotic group serves as a reminder of how critically important it is to domesticate our democracy. It is also a sad reminder of how they still subscribe and acquiesce to that proverbial slave mentality. They want the American Congress to intervene in Nigeria’s internal democracy. If the idea was not shameful enough, they’ve conveniently overlooked how difficult it has been for the US to choose a Speaker in their House of Representatives. A country where someone like Trump still has a chance of winning an election? And this is your role model of a functioning democracy? These people couldn’t be serious. They should know that every society will have to figure out the best way to manage their diversity and democracy.

“We in the Committee of Diaspora Chairmen appeal to the Nigerian government to start keeping a tab on her citizens who are bent on tarnishing the image of our dear country. As citizens, we are ready to defend the sovereignty of Nigeria with all that we’ve got. There should be no room or space for anarchists and insurrectionists to peddle their destructive trade.

“Finally, the world has changed. Ude and his fictitious coalition of 30 Diaspora organisation will do well to subject themselves to the democratic process by seeing the election of President Tinubu as a true testimony to the will of the people and that of God.”

Politics / Akutah: As A New Sheriff Enters Shippers Council by aguele(m): 12:50pm On Nov 06, 2023
By Ucha Wilberforce

One of Nigeria's finest learned minds, Pius Ukeyima Akuta, Esq, has been confirmed as Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nigerian Shippers' Council (NSC). Until his appointment and confirmation, Akutah was Principal State Counsel in the Office of the Honorable Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Federal Ministry of Justice.

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council is the Port Economic Regulator and a trade facilitation agency, with the responsibility to promote fair trade practices in the industry amongst the providers and consumers of shipping and port services. Its mandate is to establish an enabling environment for all stakeholders by instituting an efficient and effective economic regulatory system in the transport sector.

Versed in law, Akutah is an expert in International Criminal Law. His journey to becoming an advocate and solicitor of the Supreme Court (of the Federal Republic of Nigeria) started at the University of Jos, for a Diploma in Law from 1993 to 1995. He was at the University of Abuja, where he pursued an LLB, earning his Bachelor of Laws degree.

Between 2010 and 2012, Akutah studied at the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria for his LLM. An alumnus of the United States Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) and a chartered Mobile and Computer Forensics Examiner, Akutah has actively contributed to the successful negotiation of numerous Bilateral Agreements between Nigeria and several nations about Mutual Legal Assistance and Extradition.

While still serving as state counsel, the NSC boss was involved in the Department of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, International Criminal Law Division, Mutual Legal Assistance and Extradition unit.

Throughout his career, he has shown expertise in international law and justice, legal writing, and consultation, offering guidance whilst engaging in the prosecution of counter-terrorism cases, as well as actively participating in arbitration and dispute resolution processes.

Akutah is also well-versed in United Nations conventions, regional and sub-regional charters, as well as agreements, with a deep understanding of the operations of public international institutions and multinational corporations within the realm of international politics.

Among the critical functions assigned to him in this capacity was negotiating international agreements, and formulating Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA). He also prosecuted Extradition cases, a task that demands a deep understanding of the international legal framework.

Previously, he held the position of Senior State Counsel from January 2009 to January 2012, within the Federal Ministry of Justice. During this tenure, his professional focus was primarily on the practice of International Criminal Law where he handled cases of transnational crimes, including but not limited to cybercrime, terrorism-related offences, drug trafficking, bank fraud, and various other forms of transnational crime.

Born in 1968 at Ushongo Local Government Council Area of Benue State, Akutah is empathic and is deeply involved in community development and human empowerment.

In 2017, the Federal Government of Nigeria under the leadership of former President Muhammadu Buhari, honoured the Ushongo born with presidential civil service merit award and in 2022, Member of the Order of Niger (MON). All these were made possible due to his exemplary record of service to the state and humanity.

Indeed, a golden fish has no hidden place. This may explain why President Bola Tinubu picked him for the appointment. He is, therefore, bringing to the table his rich experience as a learned mind of profound erudition.

It must be emphasised that the Nigerian Shippers’ Council was appointed the Port Economic Regulator in February 2014, to create an effective regulatory regime at the Nigerian ports for the control of tariffs, rates, charges and other economic services, in line with the Federal Government port reform agenda.

The Council addresses the negative impact of port concession activities on the economy due to the absence of an economic regulator and to realise the optimal benefits of the Federal Government of Nigeria’s port reform processes.

NSC, being the Port Economic Regulator and a trade facilitation agency, has the responsibility to promote fair trade practices in the industry amongst the providers and consumers of shipping and port services. The council, therefore, remains resolutely determined to be the foremost economic regulatory agency in the country.

The important role of transport and logistics in international trade cannot be over-emphasised. That is why the Council as the port economic regulator is mandated to ensure that the quality, quantity and cost of services in the entire transportation and logistics chain is moderated and standardised in line with global best practice.

Lest one forgets, transport is a critical determinant in the conduct of international trade and impacts national economies. The availability, quality, cost, and efficiency of transport services influence the trading environment and the competitiveness of export goods on the international market as well as the cost of imported goods.

In this regard, the Nigerian Shippers’ Council serves as an agent for economic development through interventions in cost moderation and cargo transport issues resulting in a positive impact on inflationary trends in the country.

Barr. Pius Ukeyima Akutah is well-equipped to deliver on this very tall and challenging assignment. Let all hail the New Sheriff as he enters the Ship House.

*Group raises Fear over Camping of Political Thugs Ahead of Bayelsa Governorship Election*

A non-partisan and concerned community organization, Bayelsa Mandate Group has raised the alarm over the presence of political thugs in communities in the State ahead of November 11 elections.

This was contained in a statement signed by the group coordinator, Chief Mrs Esther Ikurite, raising serious concerns about the potential for violence, intimidation, and a lack of transparency in the electoral process.

The Forum called on all stakeholders, particularly the Chief of Defence Staff, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), other security agencies, and relevant authorities to take immediate action to address the pressing security issue.

The statement reads in part; "The Bayelsa Mandate Group, a non-partisan and concerned community organization, is deeply alarmed by recent reports indicating the camping of political thugs in some communities, across the state in preparation for the November 11, 2023, governorship election in Bayelsa State.

"These reports have suggested a direct association between the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Timipre Sylva, and his running mate, Mr. Joshua Maciver, in these concerning developments.

"This we wish to state, is not far fetched, from the series of threats, which have emanated from the campaign activities of Mr Sylva and His Deputy, over the past weeks, including the infamous declaration at Twon Brass, where Mr Maciver incited supporters of the APC, to chase supporters of the opposition political parties into the sea, on the day of election.

"Further reasons, for this alarm, is to inform the general public and particularly the security agencies, that in the last two days, our State have witnessed an incident of the killing of a member of the PDP, while as we speak, women and young people are being displaced in some communities in Nembe local government, by political thugs, being aided by some compromised security agents.

"The presence of political thugs in our communities raises serious concerns about the potential for violence, intimidation, and a lack of transparency in the electoral process. It is our firm belief that elections should be decided by the will of the people through a fair, free, and peaceful voting process.

"The Bayelsa Mandate Forum calls on all stakeholders, particularly the Chief of Defence Staff, who was in our state few days ago, with an assurance of protecting our citizens ahead of the forthcoming gubernatorial election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), other security agencies, and relevant authorities to take immediate action to address this pressing security issue.

"We are demanding for a close monitoring of political activities across our communities to prevent any form of intimidation, harassment, or violence.

"We urge all political actors, including Mr. Timipre Sylva and Mr. Joshua Maciver, to publicly disavow any connection with political thugs and to commit to a peaceful and violence-free election campaign. It is in the best interest of the people of Bayelsa State that the electoral process is conducted with fairness, integrity, and the highest regard for democratic values.

"The Bayelsa Mandate Forum remains committed to ensuring that the people's voices are heard and respected. We will continue to advocate for a peaceful and inclusive electoral process, and we implore all residents of Bayelsa State to remain vigilant and reject any attempts to disrupt the peace and security of our communities," the statement added.

Politics / Gbajabiamila: The Peter Who Saw Tomorrow by aguele(m): 4:01pm On Oct 29, 2023
By Okanga Agila

In the world of politics, loyalty is a virtue that is often tested, and those who remain steadfast in their commitment to their mentors are few and far between. It is a rare sight to witness a politician who remains steadfastly committed to their mentor, regardless of the challenges and temptations that come their way.

Femi Gbajabiamila, the former speaker of the House of Representatives and current Chief of Staff in Nigeria, is one such individual who epitomizes unwavering loyalty. His unwavering devotion to his mentor, Asiwaju Tinubu, has spanned over two decades, with Gbajabiamila proving himself time and again as a true political stalwart. Standing the rest of time, it is now well grounded into everyone’s consciousness that Gbajabiamila’s unwavering loyalty is not only commendable, but also a testament to his character and foresight.

In the tumultuous world of politics where “trust” is a scarce rare gem, and loyalty is often challenged, one would wonder how a man like Gbajabiamila could be steadfast with a single man in a political journey for more than a decade. With time, the answer to this mystery wasn’t Farfetch, Gbaja was simply a man that saw tomorrow while in the present.

Gbajabiamila’s loyalty to Asiwaju Tinubu has withstood the test of time. For over two decades, he has remained faithful to his mentor, never wavering in his commitment. Through the highs and lows of political landscapes, Gbajabiamila has consistently stood by Tinubu’s side, providing invaluable support and guidance. For example, in 2011, when Tinubu was opposed by some APC members in his bid to become the party’s presidential candidate, Gbajabiamila remained steadfast in his support. He also stood by Tinubu during the 2015 general elections, when Tinubu’s political enemies tried to sabotage his campaign.

Different from the case of Peter in the Bible who denied Jesus Christ 3 times in one day, Gbajabiamila has faced numerous temptations to forsake his loyalty to Asiwaju Tinubu, yet he has remained resolute. He has turned down lucrative offers, political alliances, and opportunities for personal gain, all in the name of preserving his commitment to his mentor. This unwavering loyalty is a rare quality in the political arena, where self-interest often takes precedence over principles. Gbajabiamila’s ability to resist such temptations is a testament to his unwavering dedication to the ideals and vision of his mentor.

Being familiar with the system of political-democracy, one can tactically conclude that loyalty in politics is often seen as a double-edged sword, as it can be viewed as blind obedience or a hindrance to personal growth. However, one of the most remarkable aspects of Gbajabiamila’s loyalty is his ability to see the potential in Asiwaju Tinubu when others were still skeptical. While many viewed Tinubu as a mere aspirant, Gbajabiamila recognized the qualities that would make him a great President to the Nation. His foresight and belief in Tinubu’s capabilities have been vindicated over the years, as Tinubu has risen to become a prominent figure in Nigerian politics. Gbajabiamila’s ability to identify leadership potential in his mentor showcases his astute political acumen and his unwavering belief in the transformative power of visionary leaders.

This bond created with Asiwaju in reciprocation has resulted into jealousy from detractors within and outside the party. This are disloyal sycophants that know not the value of loyalty. They are just bunch of new and old emergency activists who seek to fill their stomach infrastructure by denigrating Femi Gbajabiamila, with a hope of eliminating him, and filling up his close seat with Asiwaju.

These are people that are unstable , and can’t weather through the smallest storm before jumping ship to another master. A group of vile unpatriotic followers who are unworthy to lace the latchet on Gbajabiamila’s shoe, let alone standing in a position of criticizing him. All their efforts to pull Gbajabiamila down is visible to the blind, and audible to the deaf that everything done is for their own selfish interest.

Gbajabiamila’s leadership style is characterized by inclusivity, transparency, and a genuine desire to serve the people. it is only fair and just that he be given the opportunity to work and contribute to the progress of Nigeria. It will be in everyone’s interest that the detractors and false political-activist keep quiet, hereby allowing him to continue his work, which would further ensure the continuity of strong and effective leadership in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Throughout his career, Gbajabiamila has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills. As the current Chief of Staff , he has consistently displayed the ability to rally his colleagues, bridge divides, and push for meaningful change. His effectiveness as a leader has not only been recognized within his own party but also across party lines.

Given his unwavering loyalty, his ability to resist temptations, his visionary insight, and his exceptional leadership skills, it is imperative that Gbajabiamila be allowed to continue his impactful work. His experience, dedication, and political acumen make him an invaluable asset not only to Asiwaju Tinubu but to the Nigerian political landscape as a whole. Gbajabiamila’s track record speaks for itself, as he has consistently demonstrated his commitment to public service and his ability to navigate the complex world of politics.

Femi Gbajabiamila’s unwavering loyalty to Asiwaju Tinubu is a testament to his character, integrity, and political acumen. Through countless tests and temptations, he has remained steadfast, proving himself to be a rare political stalwart. His visionary insight and belief in Tinubu’s potential have been vindicated over the years.

Gbajabiamila has a clear vision for Nigeria. He wants to see a Nigeria that is prosperous, united, and democratic. He believes that Nigeria can achieve its full potential if its leaders are honest, competent, and committed to the public good.

As the former Speaker When Gbajabiamila said that he was going to use his position as Speaker of the House of Representatives to improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians, he did not just speak, he spoke it into manifestation in deed and action. He has pledged to work with other members of the National Assembly to pass laws that will create jobs, reduce poverty, and improve access to quality education and healthcare.

In a political landscape marred by opportunism and self-interest, Gbajabiamila stands out as a beacon of loyalty and integrity. His ability to see beyond the present and envision a future where Tinubu becomes president demonstrates his astuteness and visionary leadership. It is imperative that we recognize and appreciate such qualities in our politicians and allow Gbajabiamila the opportunity to work and contribute to the progress of Nigeria. By doing so, we not only honor his loyalty but also pave the way for a brighter future for our nation.

Nigerians should be grateful for Gbajabiamila’s loyalty to Tinubu and his commitment to working for a better Nigeria. He is a true asset to the country, and Nigerians should give him a chance to work.

It is time to acknowledge the Peter who saw tomorrow and grant Femi Gbajabiamila the opportunity to continue his exceptional service to the nation.

Asue Ighodalo: The Boardroom Guru Who is Poised to Shake Up Edo Politics Come 2024

_By J Omo-Edobor_

Asue Ighodalo is a man to watch. A prominent figure in Nigeria's corporate space, Ighodalo is known for his vision, hard work, and commitment to excellence. His accomplishments in the legal profession, business, and philanthropy have earned him a place of respect and influence in Nigerian society.

Ighodalo's journey from an economist and a young lawyer to a prominent figure is an inspiration to many. He is a shining example of what can be achieved with determination, talent, and a genuine desire to positively impact one's community and country.

It is no surprise that the mere mention of Asue Ighodalo is sending shivers down the spines of some political jobbers in Edo State. He is widely seen as a potential threat to the status quo, and his entry into the political arena would be a major shake-up.

Asue has not yet declared his intention to run for the office of the governor in 2024, but the fact that he is even considering it is enough to cause alarm among the opposition. They know that he is a force to be reckoned with and that he has the potential to bring about meaningful socioeconomic development and the real change the Edo people desire.

But who is truly afraid of Asue Ighodalo? It is not the good and amiable Edo people. They are eager for prosperity and change. They see Asue as a potential agent of change. He is a man who is not beholden to any special interests, and he has a proven track record of success.

It is the few political jobbers who are afraid of Asue Ighodalo. They are afraid of his vision for a better Edo. They are afraid of his commitment to transparency and accountability. They are afraid of his power to mobilize the people and demand change.

But Asue Ighodalo is not afraid of those few politicaljobbers . He knows that he has the support of the Edo people, and he is determined to make a difference. He is a man who is not afraid to stand up for what he believes in, and he is not afraid to fight for a better future for Edo.

Asue Ighodalo is a man to watch. He is a rising star, and he has the potential to shake up the status quo and take Edo to greater heights.

Politics / Kyari: When Competence Meets Courage by aguele(m): 6:17am On Oct 03, 2023
By William Ochonu

When competence meets courage, momentous occasions can unfold. Individuals with these characteristics are not hesitant to take chances, and they are not afraid to fail. They are also not afraid to stand up for what they believe in, even when it is unpopular. It’s because courage is the linchpin of character.

A man of such competence and courage is Mele Kolo Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited(NNPCL). A man who has had a profound influence on the National Oil Company and the petroleum industry in Nigeria. He has been instrumental in the passage of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), which is a landmark piece of legislation that has positively transformed the Nigerian oil and gas industry.

Kyari has a wealth of experience in the oil and gas industry, having worked in various capacities at the NNPCL for over 27 years. He is a highly respected technocrat who is known for his integrity and commitment to excellence.

Under Kyari’s leadership, the NNPCL has made significant progress in improving its operational efficiency and transparency. He has also introduced a number of initiatives to boost the company’s revenue and profitability.

One of Kyari’s most notable achievements is the passage of the PIA. The PIA is a comprehensive piece of legislation that will reform the Nigerian oil and gas industry. It is expected to create a more transparent and competitive environment for oil and gas exploration and production. It also led to the establishment of new regulatory bodies such as the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority.

The PIA is a major step forward for the Nigerian oil and gas industry. It will help to attract investment and boost production. It will also lead to increased government revenue from oil and gas.

Kyari has played a key role in helping to midwife the PIA. He worked tirelessly to build consensus among stakeholders and to secure the necessary approvals from the government. He is a visionary leader who has shown great determination and commitment to transforming the Nigerian oil and gas industry.

In addition to his work on the PIA, Kyari has also made significant progress in other areas. He has overseen the expansion of the NNPC’s gas infrastructure and the development of new gas-fired power plants. He has also launched a number of initiatives to improve the NNPC’s corporate governance and transparency.

Being a highly respected leader who has made a significant contribution to the Nigerian oil and gas industry, Kyari remains a man of integrity and commitment, one who is dedicated to transforming the industry and making it more efficient, transparent, and profitable.

In a view of more specific examples of Kyari’s impact on NNPC, it was recorded that:

He initiated the process of divesting NNPC’s non-core assets.

He led the development of the NNPC’s 2020-2024 Strategic Roadmap, which outlines a plan to transform the organization into a more efficient and profitable entity.

He also negotiated a $1.2 billion loan from the World Bank to help NNPC finance its capital expenditure program.

He terminated the contract with Vitol, a Dutch oil trader, which was accused of corruption.

He signed a memorandum of understanding with the Dangote Group to build a new refinery in Nigeria.

He launched the NNPCL’s gas expansion program, which aims to increase Nigeria’s gas production and exports.

Listed above, is just to mention a few in his distinguishable harem of beauties and magnanimous efforts in fostering the growth of our darling nation.

Kyari is a man of courage and he has demonstrated this time and time again in his career at the Nigerian NNPCL. He has never succumbed to pressure from critical situations faced, but instead, he works his way into solutions.

Looking back at the 2016 fuel crisis. At that time, there was a shortage of fuel in Nigeria, and the government was struggling to import enough fuel to meet demand. Kyari took charge of the situation and worked tirelessly to resolve it. He negotiated with oil producers to increase production, and further worked with the government to streamline the import process. As a result of his efforts in the front line struggles, the fuel crisis was resolved within a few months.

Not forgetting the 2017 oil price crash. At the time, the price of oil fell by more than 50%, which had a devastating impact on the Nigerian economy. Kyari took steps to mitigate the impact of the oil price crash, including reducing NNPCL’s spending and increasing its focus on renewable energy in salvaging the situation at the moment . As a result of his efforts, NNPC was able to weather the storm and emerge from the oil price crash in a stronger position.

Being a strategic thinker who has developed a long-term plan for NNPC’s growth and development, he knew that the 2023 fuel subsidy removal wasn’t a mountain challenge to be feared, as it was part of the plans to further fight corruption, and help build the Nigeria of our dream.

Prior to the announcement of the removal of fuel subsidy by Mr President, Bola Hamed Tinubu, Kyari kick-started the classified plans that were projected in different phases of execution, which were meant to cushion the effect of the removal, and also see to the uninterrupted availability and accessibility of fuel all around the country.

Though it appeared like plans are not in full gear because such action like the fuel subsidy removal isn’t what every Nigerian is accustomed to, but in no time, it would be a thing of the past like every other resolved challenges as each phase of the plans subsequently becomes fully implemented one after the other, and this will further prove to everyone that there is no supply issue as stipulated by the unlearned detractors.

Kyari has also demonstrated courage in his dealings with corruption. He has been outspoken in his condemnation of corruptible practices at the NNPC. He has taken steps to get it rooted, and further worked to improve transparency and accountability at NNPCL. As a result of this efforts, NNPCL is now a more transparent and accountable organization.

Kyari’s courage has made him a valuable and indispensable asset to NNPCL. He is a man who is not afraid to take on difficult challenges, and he is always willing to fight for what he believes in. He is a true leader, and he is making a real difference in Nigeria.

In addition to the aforementioned critical situations, Kyari has also faced other challenges during his time at NNPCL. For example, he has had to deal with the Niger Delta crisis, the Biafra agitation, and the COVID-19 pandemic. In each of these cases, Kyari has shown courage and determination in leading NNPC through difficult times.

Kyari’s courage is not limited to his professional life. He is also a courageous man in his personal life. He has faced many challenges, including the death of his wife and the kidnapping of his son. However, he has always shown strength and resilience in the face of adversity.

Kyari’s impact on NNPC has been significant. He has made the organization more efficient, transparent, and accountable. He has also laid the foundation for NNPC’s future growth and development. He is a visionary leader who is committed to making NNPC a world-class oil and gas company.

Kyari is a man of great courage and determination. His pragmatic and decisive leadership acumen has helped to improve NNPCL’s operational efficiency and profitability. He is a leader who is not afraid to make tough decisions, even when they are unpopular.

He understands that the exercise of any virtue requires the capacity to endure hardship, conquer fear and temptation, therefore, he choose the riskier and more strenuous path when he’d rather take the easier way out.

Kyari is results-oriented and has delivered on his promises to improve NNPC’s performance. He is a true leader, and he is making a real difference in Nigeria. He is an inspiration to us all.

Politics / Asiwaju 100 Days In Office And Keyamo’s Touch by aguele(m): 6:09am On Oct 03, 2023
By Williams Ochonu

Beyond the unprecedented expectations most Nigerians had on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet members, the aviation sector in no time came as a noticeable shooting star to behold. The marvel on every lips became short of their thoughts, leaving them in awe of what was yet to come.

The ascension of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the seat of Presidency in Nigeria has truly created an atmosphere of renewed hope, most especially, in the aviation sector. Just in his 100 days in office, the appointment of Festus Keyamo (SAN) as the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development has proven to be a masterstroke. This has made it obvious that the choice of cabinet members leaned toward savvy and competent people.

The progress in the aviation sector was made possible by the minister through the introduction of new reforms and policies. The wise would understand that a choice of Keyamo didn’t come as a surprise because Asiwaju is a pathfinder who is well known to have a penchant for success and a distaste for mediocrity.

For the record, Keyamo is a reputable lawyer, human rights activist, and an outstanding politician. He began his legal career in 1993 at Gani Fawehinmi’s Chambers in Lagos State, southwestern Nigeria. He later established his law firm, Festus Keyamo Chambers. Keyamo has represented many prominent Nigerians in high-profile cases, including the leader of the Niger-Delta Peoples’ Volunteer Force, Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, and the leader of the Movement For The Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Ralph Uwazuruike.

Keyamo entered politics in 2015 when he was appointed the Director of Media and Publicity for the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council. He played a key role in the election of President Muhammadu Buhari. In 2019, Keyamo was appointed the Minister of State for Labour and Employment. In August 2023, he was appointed the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

With such a track record and pedigree, Asiwaju knew that Keyamo was a viable instrument in his presidential political career. Also aware that over time, Keyamo has proven to be a good dose of aspirin in reviving any dying organization, and a booster when needed for any successful project, girdled with an acumen for conquest that is uncontestable, and a notable drive for greatness, Keyamo's nomination for the ministerial list was a revelation into the Asiwaju grand plan.

He is a man who has little patience with people who are insensitive to the suffering of ordinary, and vulnerable people in society because he grew up in a tough background, and knows what it means to be vulnerable, let alone toiling with hundreds of lives aboard on every flight all around the nation.

As detractors continued in their merchant of character assassination, Keyamo understood that indecision is the graveyard of good intentions, therefore, he quietly settled into the job and announced himself with some groundbreaking reforms, policies, and innovations.

Being a firm critic who stands up for what he believes, Keyamo isn’t bent by political gimmicks that are not in the interest of Nigerians. The minister is someone who never shies away from a challenge when faced with one. However, over the years, he has earned a reputation for his integrity, honesty, and passion for humanity.

It is worthy of note that Keyamo has brought several ingenious ideas and initiatives to the aviation sector since he was appointed minister. He has also been a strong advocate for the development of the aerospace industry in Nigeria which has further birthed more harems of positive initiatives as follows:

Being a man of plan and action, with Asiwaju’s support, Keyamo has pledged to establish a new national carrier for Nigeria. He has said that the national carrier will be a world-class airline that will compete with the best in the world.

Keyamo has launched several initiatives to rehabilitate and upgrade airports across Nigeria. He has said that he is committed to making Nigerian airports in class and in comparison with world-class facilities, thereby making Nigeria more visible in the international space.

Keyamo has been a strong advocate for the promotion of domestic aviation in Nigeria. Compassionately considering the cost of flight and standard of living, he has said that he wants to make it easier and more affordable for Nigerians to travel by air within the country.

Keyamo has also been a strong advocate for the development of the aerospace industry in Nigeria. He has said that he wants to make Nigeria a hub for aerospace manufacturing and maintenance.

Keyamo's actions were as though he knew there was a task ahead, and it clearly shows that the minister came fully prepared for the job despite his late appointment. Keyamo came with the Hallmark to sanitize, revamp, and revive the aviation sector to meet international best practices.

In just a few days in office, Keyamo has made significant progress in the aviation sector, creating a spicy delicacy in the 100 days of President Tinubu's tenure in office. The launched number of initiatives like the establishment of a new national carrier, the rehabilitation of airports, the promotion of domestic aviation, and the development of the aerospace industry, are testament to the preparedness for his ministerial position.

Keyamo’s initiatives have been well-received by industry stakeholders and the general public. He has been praised for his energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to transforming the aviation sector.

As a serving Minister, Keyamo has restored transparency, accountability, and integrity to the aviation business while winning the trust of stakeholders and international partners through his skilled negotiation.

Keyamo’s Midas touch is evident in the success of his various initiatives in the aviation sector. He has a knack for identifying and implementing solutions to complex problems.

Asiwaju wasn’t wrong when he told Keyamo, “Let’s Fix Nigeria”. He saw him as the best man for the job based on a dispassionate assessment of his previous public office records and superlative antecedents. His green alert for transparency and safety is invaluable, putting him on a pedestal to serve in his current position.

It Is important to rally behind Keyamo, helping to support and promote his initiatives to the general public. With the support of all stakeholders, it’s obvious that he will make Nigeria a leading aviation and aerospace nation.

Nigerians will celebrate Tinubu for fuel subsidy removal - Reps Deputy Spokesman Agbese

_...urges organised labour to give dialogue a chance_

The Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Dr Philip Agbese, has assured Nigerians that President Bola Tinubu's removal of fuel subsidy is in their best interest.

Agbese, the member representing Ado/ Okpokwu/ Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, spoke to newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja.

The lawmaker admitted that fuel subsidy has been a part of the nation since the 1970s, with the government routinely selling petrol to citizens at below cost to minimize the impact of rising global oil prices.

However, he noted that the outlay of subsidizing petrol has ballooned over time, adding that the regime has made a few richer.

Agbese said that available figures showed that the Buhari administration (2015 -2023) paid a subsidy of over N11.4 trillion, more than what the government spent on education, health, and infrastructure during the period under review.

While acknowledging that President Tinubu's decision to end the regime has come with hardship, he reckons that Nigerians will celebrate in the long run.

According to him, fuel subsidy constitutes 50% of the nation's problem and its termination will usher the country to her glorious era in history.

He, however, urged Organised Labour not to succumb to agents of destabilization, assuring that the resources saved from the policy would be channelled to developmental programs.

"President Tinubu must be commended for taking the bold step to save the future of our nation. Fuel subsidy was no longer attainable," he said.

"It is on record that about N40.1 billion is spent daily to subsidize every liter of petrol consumed in Nigeria by at least N600. It means the government spends about N1.24 trillion on fuel subsidies monthly.

"The country is in massive debt and would need more money to subsidize fuel. According to the World Bank, the government is projected to achieve fiscal savings of approximately two trillion naira ($2.6 billion) in 2023, equivalent to 0.9% of GDP. These savings are expected to reach over 11 trillion naira ($14.3bn) by the end of 2025.

"This will be invested in healthcare, education, and infrastructure. Indeed, the advantages of the removal of subsidy would not just come up immediately. It is not possible because the economy is not strong. We don’t have money to start implementing measures that will ameliorate the removal of the subsidy.

"However, we must look beyond the present. The future of our great nation is at stake. I want to commend President Tinubu for this brave decision. In a matter of time, Nigerians will smile.

"Let me also use this opportunity to appeal to the Organised Labour not to succumb to agents of destabilization who want to pull us back. The issue of palliatives and better welfare for all citizens is paramount before the Asiwaju government.

"Our nation can not withstand another mass action. We are trying to build not destroy. The Labour should, therefore, give dialogue a chance and at least be patient with this administration. It is still early days".
Politics / Csos Berate NLC, TUC Over Insistence On Indefinite Strike Action by aguele(m): 10:07pm On Sep 27, 2023
_...says move highly unpatriotic and targeted at destabilising Nigeria_

The insistence of organised labour to embark on an indefinite strike action has continued to attract widespread criticism, with the latest coming from the Civil Society Situation Room on Good Governance in Nigeria (CSSRGGN).

The group condemned the move by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) as highly unpatriotic and aimed to destabilise the country.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday in Abuja, Dr. Thomas Uzah, National President/Convener, said the organised labour is bent on bringing the government down through street protests.

Uzah said the NLC and TUC's obsession with mass action over dialogue despite calls from different quarters clearly shows that there is a hidden agenda.

"We hope that the leaders of organized labour fully appreciate the crimes they are committing with the sets of directives they have issued and that they also understand that they will invariably lose control of the mayhem they are trying to unleash on the country," he added.

"We are therefore calling on Nigerians and the rest of the world to note that the NLC and TUC are preparing the citizenry for war, they are preparing the country for final implosion. We further ask the discerning to note that the opposition and their foreign collaborators are bankrolling NLC and TUC to bring the government down.

"We hereby issue another advisory that the opposition, NLC, and TUC have perfected plans to grow their street protests and rallies into full-blown war by stagging or orchestrating attacks on protesters by fake security operatives so that they can accuse the government of being heavy-handed and attempt to delegitimize the government before the international community of being repressive.

"We are worried about how this dangerous plot will play out given the other security challenges that the country is already battling with. There is the obvious danger of how this could worsen banditry, kidnap for ransom, and separatist elements that have in the past used mass protests as an opportunity to plant new cells in areas where they do not hitherto exist.

"The Civil Society Situation Room on Good Governance In Nigeria therefore urges security agencies to take proactive steps to prevent the catastrophe that NLC and TUC have plotted for the country.

"We renew our appeal to the Federal Government to look beyond the NLC and TUC. The government should increase and accelerate the implementation of its palliative measures for Nigerians. "
Politics / Before Nlc Sets Nigeria On Fire by aguele(m): 7:00am On Sep 24, 2023

I have a concern with the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress. There is something fishy about the union. Recently, the disposition of the NLC has been suspect because most of its statements indicate a body acting the script of some vested interest.

The NLC has lost it completely. It is now a shadow of itself. Businessmen have taken over the group's leadership, which is business as usual. Aside from the deceit, my concern is the security implication of the activities of the NLC.

The posture adopted by the NLC defeats common sense in that as proof of its effectiveness, it is duty-bound to go against government policies, no matter how credible.

The position of the NLC in the aftermath of the removal of fuel subsidy is grossly unprofessional. As a first, Comrade Joe Ajaero is an erratic fellow who speaks from both sides of the mouth. How he was elected president of the NLC is a topic for another day.

I haven't seen a labour leader as bland in his thoughts and actions as Comrade Joe Ajaero. He reminds me of student union leaders in the university who are famous for confronting university authorities not for its merit, but to propagate the Aluta slogan without focus most times.

I won't be shocked if Comrade Joe Ajaero is acting in cohort with some disgruntled politicians in the country, who have obviously hijacked the NLC and are now a tool for destabilization and propaganda.

The NLC would scream at the slightest. It would cry murder, whereas its pocket is receiving some wads. I empathize with the members of the NLC because Comrade Joe Ajaero is smiling to the bank while giving others false hope of actions in their best interest.

I call what the NLC leadership is doing the macabre dance, depicting that the government is out to impoverish the workers in the country. Comrade Joe Ajaero seems to be the drummer boy, rendering divisive melodies that are sweet for the souls of the workers in the country.

Behind the seeming efforts at drumming, Comrade Joe Ajaero wears a grin, which ordinarily should depict sincerity of heart. But it is the other way around. He is busy counting his blessings and smiling to the bank. If this is not the case, how could one possibly explain fierce resistance to some government policies, regardless of the positives such policies would have on the socioeconomic fabric of the country?

It's hard to explain why the NLC leadership is now playing to the gallery. They cry wolf where none exist. They beat the drums of war to increase their negotiating power. After all, the more to share, the merrier. And if they don't bark, how would the money to share come in?

He is quite a smart guy. But what could be worse than deceit? I can only imagine the game Comrade Joe Ajaero and his co-travelers have been playing. It is evident that during government labor talks, he is very eager to address the press, stating why the meetings ended in deadlock.

The next you would hear is that the government needs to be more sincere in its dealings. We didn't reach any conclusion and the like. I wonder what runs through his mind when he stands on the podium to address Nigerian workers. I say this because Comrade Joe Ajaero is a character that needs careful observation.

This is where the security agencies have to come in by beaming their searchlight on the leadership of the NLC. The revelations would be mind-boggling, so much so that Nigerians would puke. There is a dangerous trend that most Nigerians have yet to realize.

Nigerians might not realize that Comrade Joe Ajaero might be playing an ethnic and political card in his attempt to discredit the government. This is the case and the reason for his recent bumpy stance on government policies.

If the ultimate aim is to instigate the people against the government, he needs to rethink. Even though he has made good profits since he became NLC president, there is still room to turn a new leaf.

I am saddened that Comrade Joe Ajaero-led NLC could declare an indefinite strike over subsidy removal. They are blind to the efforts to address the country's challenges. I beg to ask Comrade Joe Ajaero and his lieutenants what other option we have as a country in the face of the government's dwindling revenue.

What has the NLC done to address the issue of crude oil theft? Was there a rally to protest? We must call a spade, and I think the NLC under Comrade Joe Ajaero is a rudderless ship heading for the rocks.

The earlier Nigerian workers see through his scam, the better for them. What we call the NLC today is a sham and a veritable destruction tool for disgruntled politicians. But for how long this would continue is left to be imagined. My advice for Comrade Joe Ajaero is to tow the path of honor by retracing his steps. He should put an end to the regime of deceit.
