Politics / Nigerians Hail Tinubu For Automated Passports Portal by aguele(m): 8:14am On Jan 09
Nigerians world over hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the automated passports portal that was successfully launched on Monday across the globe.

A cross section of elated Nigerians that were interviewed on Monday described the innovative online passports portal as a deserved benefit of Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu.

While speaking on the successfully launched online passports portal, Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo ascribed credit of the project to the visionary leadership and support given by President Tinubu.

"This project is a success today because of the vision, support and enabling environment created by the president. I make bold to say that credit of this project should be given to President Tinubu because nothing could have been achieved without his support, encouragement and visionary leadership.

"I am indeed grateful to the father of our nation for his trust and confidence in my ability. Notwithstanding the ptoject's success, we have only been inspired to do more and continually justify the confidence reposed in us by the president".

Meanwhile, Tunji-Ojo was upbeat that the online passports portal would drastically reduce contacts between applicants and immigration officers. He also added that it would speed up the entire process of obtaining a new passports by Nigerians in any part of the world.

"This initiative is sure to bring relief to all Nigerians that desire to obtain the nation's passport. The portal has undoubtedly ended the long waiting period for passports issuance. It has also ended the cycle of daily wastage of
manhour by passports applicants", said Tunji-Ojo.
Crime / On Late Prophet T. B. Joshua & Bbc Profiling. by aguele(m): 3:02pm On Jan 08
I cant but to note with a heavy heart, filled with concern and disappointment regarding the recent interviews release by the BBC that portrayed the Late Prophet T. B. Joshua in a negative light. It deeply saddens me to witness a respected news organization present a one-sided story, devoid of the Late Prophet's ability to defend himself or present his side of the story.

The Late Prophet T. B. Joshua was an esteemed Nigerian Teleevangelist, whose influence touched the lives of countless individuals around the world. Through acts of compassion, healing, and spiritual guidance, he brought about transformative change in the lives of many. Regrettably, the recent BBC interview failed to acknowledge the profound positive impact he had on thousands of people.

It is crucial to recognize that every individual possesses their own strengths and weaknesses. While it is essential to provide a balanced perspective, the recent coverage seemed to be premeditated, focusing solely on a select few individuals who sought to tarnish the late prophet's name and the reputation of his church.

This approach not only undermines the credibility of the report but also denies viewers the opportunity to hear the multitude of testimonies from individuals who have experienced profound and positive transformations through the late prophet's ministry.

I kindly beseech the BBC to uphold the principles of fair and unbiased journalism by providing a platform for diverse perspectives. It is imperative that all sides of the story are thoroughly investigated and presented. By doing so, the BBC would not only restore the late prophet's reputation but also preserve the integrity of its esteemed news organization.

I fervently hope that the BBC interview is not intended to serve as a means of exonerating Constance Marten, a British aristocratic woman currently facing a manslaughter trial alongside her partner, a convicted sex offender, at a British Court. The claim that Constance Maureen was radicalized and traumatized after spending time with the Late Prophet T. B. Joshua and becoming one of his "disciples" lacks merit, as there are undeniable facts surrounding Constance's partner, Gordon, who spent 20 years in a US prison for committing rape at the age of 14 after burglarizing the victim's home.

I firmly believe that the BBC possesses the capacity to uncover and shed light on important issues in Nigeria and Africa that truly deserve attention. There exist numerous untold stories of resilience, progress, and positive impact that could inspire and educate a wide audience. By redirecting resources towards such endeavors, the BBC can genuinely contribute to a more informed and inclusive narrative about the region.

Once again, I implore the BBC to reconsider the approach taken in the recent casts and take meaningful steps to rectify the imbalance. By doing so, you will honor the memory of the Late Prophet T. B. Joshua and contribute to a more accurate portrayal of his life, his work, and his profound impact on countless individuals.

Thank you for taking the time to read this message. I sincerely hope that you will give due consideration to my concerns and take appropriate action to address them.

Yours faithfully,

Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, OON, SAN
Politics / X-raying President Tinubu’s Humanitarian Efforts by aguele(m): 6:16am On Jan 08
By Haruna Ibrahim

Nigeria, a vibrant nation brimming with immense potential, is no stranger to humanitarian crises. From the devastating floods that engulf swathes of land to the lingering insurgencies that displace communities, the country’s resilience is constantly tested.

All around the world, natural disasters unleash their fury, leaving communities drowning in floodwaters or gasping for air under searing droughts. The specter of war haunts regions, displacing families and shattering normalcy. Disease outbreaks, like silent assassins, stalk vulnerable populations, testing the resilience of healthcare systems. In the face of such adversity, finding solutions becomes a matter of life and death, a desperate search for pathways out of suffering becomes the only option.

The onus falls upon individuals and organizations to step up and provide succor to those in dire need. This is where President Bola Tinubu, with his unwavering passion for humanity and innovative approach, emerges as a beacon of hope.

With the appointment of Betta Edu as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, President Tinubu is answering the humanitarian needs of the nation. A woman with a god-like solution, Edu is an interpreter of humanitarian puzzles and a pacifier of crisis and violence.

Before delving into Edu’s contributions, it’s crucial to understand the complexities of humanitarian crises in Nigeria. These crises often stem from a confluence of factors, including:

Natural disasters like floods rampage through cities, that transform streets into murky canals. Droughts parch the land, turning fertile fields into desolate plains. Earthquakes crumble structures and live in a single tremor. These unpredictable outbursts of nature leave communities reeling, their livelihoods washed away or parched beyond redemption. These remain a challenge to any nation.

The major predominant occurrence is the conflict and insurgency that creates gnawing wounds of internal strife fester in various regions, displacing millions and leaving behind scars of shattered infrastructure and impeded access to necessities. The relentless echo of gunfire and the haunting wails of displaced families paint a grim picture of lives uprooted and dreams shattered. This used to be very prevalent in the Northeastern part of Nigeria before the intervention of Betta Edu.

Another is a disease outbreak that lurks in the shadows. Epidemics like cholera and Lassa fever unleash their virulence upon unsuspecting populations. Healthcare systems, already strained by limited resources, buckle under the pressure, leaving communities vulnerable and at the mercy of invisible foes.

The question in every heart remains, who is that worthy person who will bring a lasting end to all these throes? In no time, the answer sprung up in a human form, in the person of Betta Edu.

Amidst these challenges, effective humanitarian interventions hinge upon several key indicators like promptness, coordination, community engagement, and sustainability. These and many more have the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, harnessed into transforming Nigeria in a short time.

In a landscape often marred by bureaucratic hurdles and inefficiencies, Betta Edu stands out for her dedication to grassroots-driven, people-centered solutions. Her organization, the ”NaijaBetta Initiative”, embodies this philosophy, prioritizing direct engagement with affected communities and tailoring interventions to their specific needs.

Unlike her predecessors, Edu’s approach hinges on several key factors that have successfully helped in implementing the progressive changes being experienced all around the nation. Few among many are outlined below.

Her passion and empathy have been the strong driving force for her great cause of humanity. She connects with people on a human level, sharing their joys and tears, her empathy acting as a balm on their wounded spirits. This emotional connection ensures her commitment remains genuine and unwavering.

Her openness and accessibility are other key factors that have contributed to this success. Edu breaks down the walls of bureaucratic isolation, venturing into the “trenches” – the most devastated areas – with an open heart and open ears. She listens to the stories of hardship, witnessing firsthand the depth of suffering, ensuring aid reaches those who need it most, not just those who can navigate complex application processes.

Her level of transparency and accountability has been unmatchable, and outstanding in comparison with how her predecessors tackle situations. Due to her belief that trust is the bedrock of any successful intervention, Betta Edu's financial transparency and robust accountability mechanisms guided her to prevent misuse of funds and foster trust between aid providers and recipients.

Edu recognizes the importance of financial integrity, and maintaining open and transparent financial records. Regular reports and updates published on the organization’s website and social media platforms ensure complete visibility into resource allocation and expenditure, with the understanding that every naira must be accounted for, ensuring ethical and effective resource allocation. This commitment to accountability builds trust and encourages further support.

Realizing the limitations of immediate aid, Edu champions initiatives that empower communities to stand on their own two feet. Skills training programs equip locals with marketable skills, while livelihood creation initiatives provide families with sustainable income sources. This shift towards self-reliance fosters long-term resilience and reduces dependence on external aid.

As the official humanitarian aide to President Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, Edu serves as a bridge between the highest office and the grassroots. She carries the President’s message of hope and support to those affected by crises, demonstrating his commitment to alleviating suffering across the nation. She engages with individuals in the trenches, understanding their needs, and delivering messages of hope. As a mother would cares for her children without any disparity, she gives a listening ear to everyone, irrespective of their social status.

Through her unwavering dedication and innovative approach, Edu has demonstrably improved the lives of countless Nigerians caught in the throes of humanitarian crises. Her efforts have provided immediate relief to thousands of displaced persons through food, shelter, and medical supplies, and empowered communities through skills training and livelihood creation programs, fostering self-reliance and reducing dependence on aid.

She has advocated for policy changes and increased government investment in disaster preparedness and conflict resolution, addressing the root causes of crises. Her simplicity and tactful decisions have restored hope and dignity to countless individuals, reminding them that they are not forgotten amidst the chaos.

Betta Edu’s extraordinary efforts in addressing Nigeria’s humanitarian crises provide a fresh perspective on resolving such challenges. Her passion for humanity, accountability and transparency, and openness in dealings with affected individuals serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration. By analyzing key indicators for success and contrasting Edu’s approach with past methods, it becomes evident that her initiatives have the potential to transform the lives of those affected by natural disasters, war, and disease outbreaks.

Betta Edu’s story is not just about one woman’s extraordinary efforts; it’s a testament to the power of passion, empathy, and innovative thinking in tackling seemingly insurmountable challenges.

Edu continues to deliver the message of hope on behalf of President Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu anywhere she finds herself, creating a renewed birth of optimism for a brighter future in Nigeria’s pursuit of resolving humanitarian crises. She is a nation-builder and the epitome of humanity.

Politics / Before We Crucify The Nigerian Navy On Oil Theft by aguele(m): 7:52pm On Jan 07
By Goodluck Amuna

There is an interesting debate about oil theft in the country, but little emphasis has been placed on the quantity of crude oil produced in the country. I some issues with the narrative on crude oil theft. I believe its one-sided. The solution to this problem would be for the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited to conveniently provide accurate data on the amount of crude oil produced in the country.

I marvel when I read stories about the complicity of the Nigerian Navy in crude oil theft in the country. Even though I am aware these stories are propaganda, it is imperative for issues to be put in proper perspective. As a concerned stakeholder, I am privy to some mind-boggling information on the oil and gas sector issues and the attendant implications for the country's economy. It is a regime of impunity.

Unfortunately, the Nigerian Navy is the sacrificial lamb because its operations are on the sea. But only a few know about the vested interests in that sector, both in government and outside government. It is so bad that sanitizing that sector would be a full-fledged war. The beneficiaries dot the nook and cranny of the country. They have their contacts everywhere; the more you see, the less you understand.

Most unfortunate is that the Nigerian Navy is bearing the brunt of their actions for the audacity to confront them and end the illicit trade. The Nigerian Navy has lost several officers in the line of duty. Nobody talks about that. What has been propagated in the media is that the Nigerian Navy is complicit in crude oil theft. This is an anomaly.

There are pertinent questions I would like to ask. One of them is the identity of the owners of the private security guards contracted by the government. What have they done in terms of protecting oil assets? Are they complicit? Answers must be provided by the relevant authorities. There are a lot of complications in the crude oil regime, and to resolve these complications, the country must get it right regarding our production capacity.

This is the first step before we can delve into what quantity is sold and what quantity is supposedly stolen. We must also be careful not to disparage the Nigerian Navy's efforts in curbing crude oil theft. Let's not forget in a hurry that the Nigerian Navy plays a crucial role in protecting Nigeria's maritime resources. It ensures the safety and security of Nigeria's territorial waters and exclusive economic zone. The Navy conducts patrols to guard against illegal activities such as piracy, smuggling, and illegal fishing. Then, how come a section of the country would now turn around to accuse the Nigerian Navy of any act of illegality?

Here is an interesting fact: The Nigerian Navy has stated that since 2004, it has arrested the crews of 236 tug boats, barges, and ships in an effort to crack down on the theft of crude oil and other illegal activities taking place on the seas off the coast of Nigeria. Increased naval patrolling and a policy of intercepting the larger depot ships were responsible for achieving this result. Theft of crude oil without these depot ships becomes a more dangerous activity as the smaller ships cannot cross rough seas to other countries. The depot ships can receive stolen crude oil from smaller boats and barges for transport across deeper oceans. The effort had reduced the number of attacks on vulnerable naval personnel stationed at illegal loading points. This is a commendable effort, and there is expected to be a barrage of attacks against the Nigerian Navy.

I can understand the campaign of calumny against the Nigerian Navy. It is common in this clime and has been ongoing for several years. But for how long do we want to continue in this diatribe? Unfortunately, those vested interests have the means to control the narrative in the media and why the slander campaign has recently been scathing.

I still struggle to imagine the involvement of the Nigerian Navy in crude oil theft. It is akin to giving a dog a bad name to hang it. This is what is playing out, and I don't think the naval authorities should succumb to this blackmail.

This is my take on the whole issue. The operations of the Nigerian Navy are an albatross for the actors in the trade. I gathered that the Nigerian Navy has rejigged its operations in the Niger Delta region to reduce, to the barest minimum, incidences of crude oil theft and other illegalities that hurt the economy. The best we can do is to encourage the Nigerian Navy as concerned stakeholders.

Also, the media has a crucial role to play in this regard. The press must not be seen as encouraging propaganda and slander in this situation. They must be objective in the reportage of issues of national interest. The slander campaign against the Nigerian Navy is the handiwork of those entrenched in crude oil theft—my two cents.

Politics / Betta Edu's Luster And Her Desperate Mark Erasers by aguele(m): 5:42pm On Jan 07
By Uche Obi

The drama emanating from the allegations and counter allegations over the reported authorisation of payment to the tune of N585m by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, have treated citizens to plethora banters. The incidence has raised both dent and dust as much as I has raised far reaching questions.

Edu has called the allegation spurious, although she has been under heavy attacks for the supposed misdeed, or what some persons impliedly tagged unethical action, moreso since the memo wherein a directive was given to the Accountant-General of the Federation, Oluwatoyin Madein, to effect the payment surfaced within the public space. Edu vehemently denounced and described all as a delibrate plot by mischief makers to out him and, in the course, smear the government in which she currently serves.

In her analysis, minister Edu has explained how the approval was given in good faith. She also gave tenable reasons as justifications for the circumstance of approval, which includes guarding the public funds from falling into the usual conduits and never reaching the needy for which they are meant. Her side of the story portrays how those who have seem to have been gated from profiting from the drain pipes are infuriated and subsequently out to take a pound of flesh.

In a way, the drama is waking up the ghost of similar impression; the controversial incidence that short-lived the ministerial assignment Ogun born Kemi Adeosun, the nation's former minister of finance who was taken out of office at the time the country was enjoying her peak of prowess for an offence she did not commit in person. And, in Edu's case, the speed with which the said memo was let out to the public reeks of desperation by certain faceless forces who all along have been waiting for her fall by any means possible.

In Edu's words, she has, in the course of her work, encountered resistance from forces whose hands may not be clean. She said the claims are baseless and an attempt to undermine the efforts government is making to fight corruption and uplift those in need. She stressed that her commitment to transparency, accountability, and eradicating corruption remains unwavering, and that the challenges would only strengthen her resolve to serve with integrity and dedication.

Edu had asserted in a rather categorical tone: "Under my leadership at the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, there will be no embezzlement of government funds. Any attempts to tarnish the image of this administration, myself, or the Ministry will be futile." This is a resolve that should be encouraged by well meaning Nigerians, lest desperate mark erasers typically have their way.

This business by decoy, of subtly plotting the fall of the country's gifted hands appears to be a lucrative one for its sponsors and players. The other day, it was the President's Chief of Staff, Rt Hon Femi Gbajabiamila, whom they blackmailed unsuccessfully. It took the president's professed confidence in his Chief of Staff to shut down the left-handed game.

In the same vein, when weighed against the circumstances under which Adeosun walked into the trap emplaced by those she thought were friends and patriots, a credulous trait that cost her the name she laboured hard through the years to build and cost the country the opportunity to maximize her gifts and skills at the time her aptitude was direly needed.

Betta Edu has expressed believe in the power of truth prevailing. Banking on God, the ultimate judge of human deeds, she said her confidence that the collective efforts to continue to make positive impacts on the lives of the less privileged while confronting the sly men. To this end, Betta needs all the support that she can get in a time like this. To defeat defamers and sustain her good strides in favour of the disadvantaged Nigerians, she needs a prop in us because it's said that marks, when made, attract erasers.

Politics / I Learned From The Best, From The Grand Masters Of The Game by aguele(m): 12:10pm On Jan 06
-Kayode Ajulo, OON, SAN

My elevation to the prestigious rank of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria, holds a certain sense of magnificence for me as I find myself in a contemplative state, reflecting on how everything began.

For me it all started from when I began to recognize my surroundings while living with my parents in Ibadan, Oyo State. I received my basic education in various cities such as Ibadan, Ilesha, and Akure. Lagos like my home town, Ifira-Akoko is for holidays.

I had the privilege of accompanying my parents on their journeys as they were booksellers. My mother, who is now 89 years old, was an entrepreneur. I distinctly remember her textile stall at Dugbe Market and later her bookshop opposite WATECO in Oke-Bola, Ibadan. The shop was close to Chief Obafemi Awolowo's residence in Oke-Bola. I enjoyed going to my mother's shop, not only to count the visitors to Baba's house but also with the hope of being among them. I also recall Chief Adewale, whom I hope is his name, known as King of Boys, with his impressive vehicles, driving around and acknowledging people who hailed him. Interestingly, then my only wishes is to become King of Boys and eventually, we became friends. He would stop at my mother's place to give me gifts.

Furthermore, my late father, may his soul continue to rest in peace, was a manager at CSS Bookshop in Aminigun, Ibadan and other places. His clientele consisted of prominent and wealthy individuals and corporations surpassing those of my mother's shop.

Whenever these influential figures visited the shop, my father made sure that we were present, giving us the opportunity to be introduced to these great men and women. I became familiar with most of the movers and shakers in Ibadan during that time. One particular day, a well-dressed man wearing a bow tie visited the bookshop, and something surprising happened.

My father, who meant the world to me, showed an unprecedented level of deference to this man. It surprised me because my father had never gone to such lengths for even Chief Awolowo. I became deeply interested in this man. During the introductions, my father informed me that he was a renowned lawyer and judge. That's how I met my Lord, the honorable Justice Kayode Esho, and in that instant, I decided that I wanted to become a lawyer. It was due to the way my father praised him, combined with the man's impressive appearance and the fact that he shared my first name, Kayode.

And so, my journey to becoming a lawyer began when I was around 6 or 7 years old. Later on, during the Governor Ajasin and Omoboriowo’s petition in Akure, one of my dad’s friend a lawyer, Hon. Smart Omodunbi will come to our house in the evening to regaled us what transpired in Court, with such gusto that all will be well, and this came to pass. I also had the opportunity to meet Chief G.O.K. Ajayi, SAN, who served as Ajasin's lead counsel during the election petition. He was also the Chancellor of the Anglican Communion. He visited St. David Cathedral in Ijomu-Akure with Chief Ajasin, and the entire congregation went Gaga as they were delighted with him for restoring Baba Ajasin's mandate.

On that day, I made a final and firm resolution to pursue a career in law. However, it wasn't an easy journey. I was called to the bar in 2001 and began my career as a Federal Attorney/State Counsel at the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja. I had the rare privilege of working under Chief Bola Ige, SAN, and Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, both of whom served as Attorneys General of the Federation. My immediate boss was Chief Kumuyi, who later became and retired as the Chief Judge of Ondo State. He was a brilliant and compassionate advocate who introduced me to Chief Afe Babalola, SAN, where I worked briefly in his chambers.

During my time at Afe Babalola's chambers, I had the opportunity to meet Dr. Olumide Ayeni, SAN, who headed the Abuja office. He was an exceptionally cerebral lawyer and a workaholic. I never saw him leave the office during my stint at Afe Babalola's chambers. He was always there, meticulously attending to his work. He taught me about advocacy and how to conduct thorough research. After some time, I crossed paths with Dr. Tunji Abayomi, who appointed me as the Head of Chambers in his Abuja office. I had only been at the bar for a year and half then.

From there, I joined Prince Wole Adebayo at his House of Law. Prince Adebayo, who was a presidential candidate of SDP in the recent general election, possessed remarkable wit, generosity, and an extraordinary approach to practicing law.

Eventually, I established my law firm, Kayode Ajulo & Castle of Law, and despite having lawyers working under me, I never ceased to seek guidance from and serve under other lawyers as mentors. This led me to encounters with Late Chief FRA Williams, SAN, Late Miskom Peupet, Late Chief G.O.K. Ajayi, SAN, Chief Ebun Sofunde, SAN, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN and others.

I think this should serve as a lesson for young lawyers, seeking out mentors in the legal field. In my experience, mentorship has been the key to success in law. For me, I went all out to find the best mentors and pursued them relentlessly. Some may reject you initially, but once they see your determination, they may accept you. They may not offer you direct employment, but they can mentor you and guide you. Offer them your services, even if it means accompanying them to court without pay. Just do it, because you're learning. I'm proud to say that I learned from the best, from the grand masters in the profession. Success, to me, is about seeing opportunities given by the Almighty and being ready to grasp them. As I mentioned earlier, I feel a sense of greatness and challenge as I see this elevation not as the end but as a new beginning of even greater things to come.
Politics / Betta Hero Of Anti-corruption Campaign In Africa - Commonwealth Society by aguele(m): 11:54am On Jan 06
The Commonwealth Society of Nigeria (CSN) has named the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, as its anti-corruption hero and ambassador.

The group said Betta was selected owing to her zero tolerance for sharp practice as well as her uncompromising and resolute approach to governance as demonstrated in the last six months.

According to a statement signed by its Country Director, Prince Musa Abutu, the group noted that corruption remains a major stumbling block to the progress of Africa's biggest economy.

While admitting that President Bola Tinubu has demonstrated the will to buck the trend, Abutu said Betta Edu has given Nigerians hope with her honesty, transparency, and accountability so far.

He added that Edu has divulged the rot in the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA) which is now being investigated for corruption, fraud, and money laundering.

Abutu, therefore, applauded Edu for exposing over N44 billion theft that took place under watch instead of keeping quiet to benefit from the loot.

"Corruption undermines democracy and respect for human rights, impedes investment, stifles economic growth, hampers government services, and allows criminality to flourish," the statement said.

"Moreover, corruption often provides a foothold for our most dangerous adversaries, who exploit vulnerabilities in our systems and hurt the ability of government to deliver results for citizens, thus destroying public trust.

"We are excited that a Nigerian is standing up to end this nemesis. Betta Edu is someone like never seen - she is honest and transparent. She embodies the mantra of the current administration.

"We believe that her eagle eye exposed the corruption in her ministry. Edu must have meticulously scrutinised the expenditure of public funds by all the agencies under her watch and discovered discrepancies.

"We salute her bravery, not minding if her detractors will fight back. As we have seen, they are already at work with their cheap blackmail against her. For us, Edu is a champion already.

"She could have kept quiet to benefit from over N44 billion stolen from her ministry. But she chose to speak up. That is greatness.

"We wish to appeal to President Tinubu and the security agents to protect Edu at any cost. She is a national asset. With people like her in public service, there is hope for the continent.

"Finally, for African nations to succeed, we must treat economic security with the same urgency that we place on military security. Economic security includes shoring up the vulnerabilities created when our economies are influenced by corrupt actors."
Politics / Centre Lauds Tinubu Over Suspension Of NSIPA Coordinator by aguele(m): 10:42am On Jan 05
The Centre for Accountability and Transparency (CAT) has commended President Bola Tinubu for suspending the National Co-ordinator and Chief Executive Officer of the National Social Investment Programme Agency, Halima Shehu.

In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Dr Hassan Abdullahi, the Centre said the suspension was necessary to allow for a proper probe into alleged money laundering in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development under Sadiya Umar-Farouk.

Dr Abdullahi said as someone who has earned a reputation for his pragmatic leadership over the years, President Tinubu has demonstrated the will to end corruption, especially among government officials.

He said the President, not only flushed away the old order, he appointed competent personalities into his cabinet - those with a deep knowledge of his Renewed Hope Agenda and renowned for integrity, transparency, and accountability.

Dr Abdullahi further said President Tinubu is gradually ridding the rot he inherited, particularly in the Humanitarian Affairs ministry which was embroiled in different scandals.

Dr Abdullahi, however, urged security agents to ensure that Shehu, Umar-Farouk, and others allegedly involved in the fiendish act must face the full wrath of the law.

"The Centre for Accountability and Transparency (CAT) wishes to commend President Tinubu for taking the bold step to suspend the CEO of the National Social Investment Programme Agency. It shows that our President means business," he said.

"We are glad that Halima Shehu is currently in EFCC custody in connection with fraud during her time as the National Coordinator in charge of the Conditional Cash Transfer Programme. Former Minister Sadiya Umar-Farouk has also been mentioned.

" A monumental fraud is said to have taken place under her watch, reportedly laundering millions through a contractor, James Okwete. The former minister has shunned requests to appear before investigators at the EFCC Headquarters.

"As a Centre, we demand justice. Shehu, Sadiya Umar-Farouk, and their accomplices must face the full wrath of the law".
Politics / Oil Theft: N/delta Group Passes Vote Of Confidence On Navy, CNS, Ogalla by aguele(m): 6:34am On Jan 05
Group Commends CNS, Nigerian Navy On Protection of National Assets, Maritime Safety.

Foremost pro-democracy and development group, known as Niger-Delta Development Initiative (NDDI), has given pastmark to the effort of the Nigerian Navy in its effort to get rid of oil bunkers and illegal oil merchants in the South South region.

The group specifically acknowledged the bravery of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla and his team in waging war against the age-long oil theft in the oil rich region.

According to a statement signed by Rev. Sam Smith Tonye, President of NDDI, before Mr. Ogalla came on board as Naval henchman, the proliferation of pirates and illegal oil merchants in Niger Delta had caused Nigeria's Government a great fortune.

Rev. Tonye said, "the various efforts and machineries put in place by Ogalla in combating crimes and criminality around the seas and nation's waterways can not be ignored".

He added that, "the measures put in place to check the activities of those pirates and bunkers is seriously paying off", saying, "the top merchants and their Abuja collaborators now know it's no longer business as usual".

The group also praised the Chief of Naval Staff "for helping to reduce to barest minimal level, incidents of oil theft in the Niger Delta", as well as, "protecting the nation's coastal waters from external enemies who come in to steal the nation's wealth regularly".

This, the group alluded, was far from what was the state of the oil rich region before the inauguration of Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu as the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

The statement argued that, the reign of Ogalla barely six months as CNS, has brought about improved changes in Niger Delta region.

Recall that President Tinubu appointed Mr. Ogalla as Chief of Naval Staff in June, 2023, few days after his inuaguration as President.

Also recall that, the House of Representatives, had in July, 2023, raised alarm over the incessant oil theft in Nigeria.

Though the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas set up an ad-hoc committee to investigate the menace, but the committee was short-lived, even having made appreciable progress through revelations by various stakeholders.
Politics / X-raying Akuta's New Direction In Shippers Council by aguele(m): 5:37am On Jan 04
By Dan Abutu

The Nigerian maritime industry, a behemoth pulsating with the lifeblood of global trade, has long felt the tremors of change. Yet, amid the churn and churn of shifting currents, a figure emerges, steady and resolute, charting a course towards a brighter horizon. He is barrister Pius Ukeyima Akuta, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, and his leadership signals a new era of reform, reinvention, and renewed hope.

For decades, the Shippers’ Council, entrusted with safeguarding the interests of Nigerian shippers, has grappled with challenges that mirrored the broader complexities of the maritime sector. Inefficiencies plagued operations, disputes lingered unresolved, and the voices of shippers often echoed unheard. In this landscape, Barrister Akuta’s arrival is akin to a lighthouse piercing the fog, illuminating a path forward.

However, it is under his leadership that we are witnessing a truly transformative period, characterized by a wave of silent reforms that have the potential to shape the future of the Council and the nation’s economy.

His journey to the helm of the Council was itself a testament to his unwavering commitment to the maritime sector. As a maritime lawyer with years of experience navigating the intricate legalities of international trade, he possessed a deep understanding of the challenges faced by Nigerian shippers. This understanding, coupled with an unwavering work ethic and a visionary spirit, formed the bedrock of his audacious vision for the Council.

Barrister Pius Ukeyima Akuta’s tenure as the Executive Secretary of the Shippers Council has been marked by a series of silent reforms, aimed at revolutionizing the operations of the institution and enhancing its service to the nation. These reforms, though not always visible to the public eye, have been instrumental in improving efficiency, transparency, and accountability within the Council.

Barrister Akuta’s ideas have been nothing short of transformative. Without fanfare, he has embarked on a silent revolution - a quiet resolve of a captain setting his course. His focus has been on building strong foundations and establishing systems and processes that will weather the storms of the future.

One of the key areas of focus for Barrister Pius Ukeyima Akuta has been the digitalization of processes and services within the Shippers Council. Recognizing the need for streamlined operations in a rapidly changing global landscape, he has championed the implementation of cutting-edge technologies to automate various tasks, such as documentation, tracking, and communication. From online dispute resolution platforms to automated cargo tracking systems, technology is being harnessed to streamline processes, enhance transparency, and empower shippers.

Gone are the days of cumbersome paperwork and lengthy bureaucratic delays; under Akuta’s leadership, the Council is embracing the efficiency and accessibility that the digital age has to offer. This digital transformation has not only reduced bureaucratic bottlenecks but has also significantly enhanced the overall experience for shippers, leading to increased efficiency and cost savings.

But technology is merely a tool; the engine that drives it forward is people. Recognizing this, Barrister Akuta has invested heavily in human capital development and prioritized capacity building and training programs for the staff of the Shippers Council. By investing in the professional development of the workforce, he has empowered them with the knowledge and skills necessary to adapt to new challenges and deliver exceptional service. This focus on human capital has fostered a culture of excellence and professionalism within the Council, resulting in improved service delivery and customer satisfaction.

Training programs and capacity-building initiatives have equipped Council staff with the expertise needed to navigate the complexities of digital transformation. This focus on human development ensures that the Council is not just technologically advanced, but also equipped with the human touch that is vital in serving the needs of shippers.

However, Barrister Pius has spearheaded initiatives to foster stronger collaborations and partnerships with relevant stakeholders, both nationally and internationally. By forging strategic alliances with shipping lines, port operators, and other government agencies, he has created a conducive environment for dialogue, cooperation, and collective problem-solving. These partnerships have not only strengthened the Council’s influence but have also facilitated knowledge sharing and the adoption of best practices, ultimately benefiting the Nigerian maritime industry as a whole.

One of his most impactful initiatives has been the establishment of the Shippers’ Complaints Unit. This dedicated unit provides a platform for shippers to voice their grievances and seek redressal. No longer must their concerns fall on deaf ears; under Akuta’s leadership, the Council is actively listening and working to resolve issues with swiftness and fairness.

Furthermore, Barrister Akuta has been a vocal advocate for the rights of Nigerian shippers on the international stage. He has engaged with port authorities and shipping lines around the world, pushing for fairer tariffs, reduced demurrage charges, and improved service standards. His unwavering commitment to protecting the interests of Nigerian shippers is no doubt earning him respect and recognition across the global maritime community.

Barrister Akuta’s vision extends beyond the confines of the Shippers’ Council. He recognizes that the maritime industry is a complex ecosystem, and sustainable progress requires collaboration. He has forged strong partnerships with government agencies, private sector stakeholders, and academic institutions, leveraging their expertise and resources to drive positive change.

His efforts have been instrumental in the development of the National Transport Master Plan, a blueprint for the future of the Nigerian transportation sector. He has also played a key role in the establishment of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, a center of excellence dedicated to nurturing the next generation of maritime professionals.

Barrister Pius Ukeyima Akuta’s silent reforms at the Shippers Council are not merely administrative adjustments; they represent a visionary approach to transforming the Council into a world-class institution that can effectively support Nigeria’s economic growth and development. Through digitalization, capacity building, and strategic collaborations, he has laid a solid foundation for the Council’s future success.

The silent reforms he has championed will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the efficiency, transparency, and effectiveness of the Council’s operations. By embracing innovation and fostering partnerships, he is positioning the Council as a key player in the global shipping industry and a catalyst for Nigeria’s economic prosperity.

Barrister Pius Ukeyima Akuta’s leadership at the Shippers’ Council is more than just a series of impressive initiatives; it is a symbol of hope. It is a testament to the fact that progress is possible and that even in the most challenging of circumstances, dedicated leadership, strategic vision, and unwavering commitment can pave the way for a brighter future.

As the Nigerian maritime industry charts its course towards calmer waters, one thing is certain: the ship is in steady hands. Under the guidance of Barrister Akuta, a new era of prosperity, empowerment, and sustainable growth beckons. The echoes

Living legends like Barrister Pius Ukeyima Akuta are rare to find in this generation of ours. They are time travelers with a transformative nature of leadership skills. Indispensable rare gems to be sought after, and a hallmark
of transformation needed to make any country a great nation.

As Nigerians, we should rally behind these silent reforms and support the vision of a more efficient, transparent, and globally competitive maritime sector. With Barrister Pius Ukeyima Akuta at the helm, we can confidently embrace a future where the Shippers Council plays a pivotal role in driving Nigeria’s economic growth and shaping our nation’s destiny.

Politics / NCC Breaking New Grounds In Accountability, Transparency- Reps Deputy Spokesman by aguele(m): 12:22am On Jan 03
Hon Phillip Agbese, the deputy spokesperson of the House of Representatives, has applauded the leadership strides of the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr Aminu Maida, for entrenching a regime of transparency and accountability in the critical telecommunication sector.

Hon. Phillp Agebse spoke at a round table with stakeholders in the telecommunications sector in Abuja recently. He stated that the NCC, as the regulator of the telecommunications sector, has displayed an unalloyed commitment to sanitizing the sector and re-positioning it for excellent efficiency.

“The NCC under Dr Aminu Maida, in a short period, has created an enabling environment for competition among operators in the industry and ensuring the provision of qualitative and efficient telecommunications services throughout the country. This is unprecedented and indicates that the telecoms sector in Nigeria would experience a turnaround in ensuring efficient telecommunications services across the country.”

“ We must admit that purposeful leadership is central to quality service delivery, and this is what Dr Aminu Maida has displayed since he was appointed the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC. His impact has been felt in the telecommunications industry in Nigeria.”

“For example, after the World Radio-communications Conference (WRC) 2023, Nigeria joined the rest of the world to sign the Final Acts WRC-23, which constitutes a record of the decisions made at the conference. Among the decisions reached were the spectrum for International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT), which will be crucial for expanding broadband connectivity and developing IMT mobile services, also known as 4G, 5G and, in the future, 6G.”

Hon Agbese further stated that Dr Aminu Maida is a visionary leader who has brought his wealth of experience to bear.

“The NCC helmsman has started on a promising note. The NCC as a regulatory body has initiated strategic moves towards ensuring fair competition in all sectors of the Nigerian communications industry and also encourage the participation of Nigerians in the ownership, control and management of communications companies and organizations.”

“ These are tangibles that ought to be celebrated. It reinforces the truism that effective leadership is crucial for success and growth. A successful leader can inspire, motivate, and drive their team towards a shared goal and encourage a culture of growth and development.”

“ This is at play at the NCC under the stewardship of Dr Aminu Maida; it underpins the success of all other priority areas to achieve a significant all-round growth of the telecommunications industry.”

The lawmaker enjoined stakeholders in the telecommunications sector to join hands with the NCC helmsman to deliver an industry that promotes healthy competition using the principle of transparency.

“ I call on stakeholders in the telecommunications sector to join hands with Dr Aminu Maida, who has pledged that transparency and accountability will form the bedrock of his leadership at the NCC to build a resilient, accountable and efficient institution.”

“We must admit that the telecommunications sector in Nigeria is a major contributor to sustainable growth and development. The sector has contributed immensely to Nigeria’s GDP. This indicates the need for concerted efforts towards ensuring that the telecommunications sector is on the right path in our quest for sustainable growth and development.”

It would be recalled that President Bola Tinubu appointed Dr Aminu Maida as the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission in October 2023, and the Senate subsequently confirmed him on November 2023, for a term of five years, subject to renewal.
Politics / 2024 Budget: Group Scores Appropriations Chairman, Abubakar Bichi High On Meticu by aguele(m): 12:02am On Jan 03
2024 Budget: Group Scores Appropriations Chairman, Abubakar Bichi High On Meticulous Consideration

A Group, Transparency and Accountability Watch Initiative (TAWI), has scored the Chairman House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations, Abubakar Bichi, high on the detailed consideration of the 2024 appriopration bill which was recently signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Recall that the 2024 appropriation bill was signed into law by Mr President after it was passed by the two arms of the National Assembly.

The Transparency and Accountability Watch Initiative (TAWI) lauded Abubakar Bichi, Chairman House Committee on Appropriations, who not only led the scrutinizing of the 2024 appriopration bill but also presented an excellent report which led to the smooth passing of the bill by the lower legislative chamber.

TAWI in a statement by its President, Josiah Attah commended Bichi for his rare patriotism, noting that his decision to lead his Committee to carefully scrutinize the 2024 appropriation bill without fear or favour and for the overall interest of Nigerians, solidifies the belief that the 10th National Assembly is not a rubber stamp.

"Meticulous scrutinizing of the 2024 appriopration bill by the Abubakar Bichi-led House Committee on Appropriations is not only commendable but exemplary in the African legislative pantheon," Attah said.

"Bichi has yet again demonstrated unequivocal patriotism by working closely with the Senate Committee on Appropriations and the executive to ensure that the 2024 appriopration bill was duly scrutinized, vigorously considered, and timely passed and signed into law for the overall benefits of Nigerians. His timely and excellent presentation of his committee's report ensured that the House passed the bill on December 30, 2023, which ensured the sustenance of the long-established and cherished precedent of ensuring compliance with the Financial Year Act through budget passage on or before 31 December of each financial year.

"The decision of Bichi and his colleagues to increase the 2024 appropriation bill from N27.5 trillion proposed by Mr. President to N28.7 trillion is also laudable, considering the size of the country and current economic reality. The groundswell of commendations and praises that have been trailing the passing and signing into law of the 2024 appropriation bill is an indication that the Bichi-led House Committee on Appropriations and their colleagues in the Senate did their homework very well.

"We are proud to say that from our findings, Abubakar Bichi has been excellent in discharging his duties as Chairman of the Committee on Appropriations despite the committee having one of the broadest jurisdictions of any committee. We are aware that the Bichi-led House Committee on Appropriations held a one-day town hall meeting where citizens made contributions to the 2024 appropriation bill.

"Bichi is a known stickler for excellence and has continued to demonstrate that with his thoughtful legislative interventions. He has raised the bar with the recent role he played in the smooth passage of the 2024 appropriation bill. His patriotic values laced with chivalry have placed him in a position to always put the interest of people first. The versatile lawmaker has yet again justified his appointment as Chairman House Committee on Appropriations.

"The Transparency and Accountability Watch Initiative (TAWI), therefore, scored the Abubakar Bichi-led House Committee on Appropriations 100/100 in the scrutinizing, presentation, and passage of the 2024 appropriation bill which ensured the smooth and timely signing of the bill into law."

The group urged Abubakar Bichi and his colleagues not to relent in providing quality legislative interventions for the betterment of the appropriation sector.
Politics / Appraising Minister Betty Edu As Tinubu's Best Minister Of The Year by aguele(m): 10:08pm On Jan 02
By William Ochonu

In the tapestry of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, woven with threads of ambition and transformation, few figures shine as brightly as Dr. Betta Edu, the Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. Within just six months of taking office, Dr. Edu has emerged as a formidable force, her performance echoing the aspirations of the “Renewed Hope Agenda” with remarkable precision. To claim, as did a recent online platform, that she is the Best Performing Minister in this early stage is not hyperbole, but a testament to her dedication, her strategic acumen, and her unwavering commitment to alleviating the plight of the most vulnerable Nigerians.

In recent times, the Nigerian political landscape has witnessed the emergence of exceptional leaders who have made significant contributions to the growth and development of the nation. One such leader is Minister Betty Edu, who has consistently showcased her brilliance and dedication in serving the people.

From the very outset, Dr. Edu’s journey has been marked by a singular focus on service. Her Senate confirmation hearing was a masterclass in articulating a clear vision, grounded in deep empathy and a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by millions. She spoke not just of policy and programs, but of the human faces behind the statistics, the mothers struggling to feed their children, the young people yearning for opportunity, the elderly facing the twilight of their lives with trepidation.

No doubt that her expertise, qualifications, and unwavering commitment to public service were evident during this process. Her passion resonated with the Senators, securing her confirmation with an overwhelming majority, and her confirmation signaled the trust and confidence that Tinubu had in her capabilities.

From the moment Betty Edu assumed office, she embraced Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda like a religious book. She wasted no time in translating the agenda into action, spearheading transformative initiatives that have brought about positive change in various sectors. She recognized that the “Renew Hope Agenda” demanded not just good intentions, but nimble execution and a multi-pronged approach.

One area where Minister Betty Edu has excelled is in the transformation of the education sector. Recognizing the vital role that education plays in national development, she has implemented innovative policies aimed at improving access to quality education for all Nigerians. Education remains a cornerstone of Dr. Edu’s vision. Programs like the Girl Education Project and the Back-to-School Campaign prioritize access to quality education, particularly for girls and children in conflict-affected areas, breaking the cycle of poverty and fostering long-term social mobility.

Under her leadership, there has been a significant increase in investment in infrastructure, teacher training programs, and the provision of modern teaching materials. These efforts have resulted in improved educational outcomes and have set a solid foundation for the future of Nigerian youth.

Furthermore, Minister Betty Edu’s commitment to gender equality and youth empowerment is evident in her tireless advocacy and implementation of programs that uplift these marginalized groups. She has championed initiatives that promote women’s participation in leadership positions, economic empowerment, and access to essential services. The Minister spearhead initiatives tailored to support specific groups facing unique challenges. Additionally, she has spearheaded youth-focused programs aimed at equipping the younger generation with the necessary skills and opportunities to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Another area where Minister Betty Edu has made remarkable strides is in the healthcare sector. Recognizing the inextricable link between health and poverty alleviation, Dr. Edu has prioritized accessible healthcare and improved nutrition. Mobile clinics have been deployed to remote areas, and partnerships with health agencies have strengthened primary healthcare delivery. Additionally, nutrition programs like the School Feeding Programme ensure children receive essential nutrients for optimal development. Her pragmatic approach has resulted in tangible improvements in healthcare delivery and outcomes across the country.

Recognizing the devastating impact of conflict on vulnerable populations, Dr. Edu champions peacebuilding initiatives. Engagement with conflict-affected communities, promoting dialogue and reconciliation, lays the groundwork for sustainable development and lasting peace.

Recognizing the immediate impact of direct financial assistance, and the need to scale up cash transfer, she came with a suitable program where she oversaw the expansion of existing cash transfer programs like the Household Uplifting Programme (HUP) and Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT). This ensured increased reach and impact, directly alleviating the burdens of millions struggling with poverty and food insecurity.

In effecting Grassroots Mobilization & Participation, Dr. Edu understands the power of community voices. By actively engaging with grassroots organizations and community leaders, she ensures that interventions are responsive to local needs and empower communities to be drivers of their own development.

These are but a few brushstrokes in the vibrant portrait of Dr. Edu’s achievements. Her accomplishments extend beyond mere program implementation, for she has instilled a sense of dynamism and accountability within the Ministry. Regular monitoring and evaluation ensure that resources reach their intended beneficiaries, and innovative approaches are constantly explored to maximize impact.

Betty Edu’s tenure as a minister has witnessed a remarkable focus on infrastructure development. She has played a pivotal role in facilitating strategic partnerships and securing investments for critical infrastructure projects across various sectors. Her efforts have resulted in improved transportation networks, power supply, and the modernization of key facilities, thereby creating an enabling environment for economic growth and development.

Minister Edu’s exceptional leadership qualities have been instrumental in driving her success. Her ability to inspire and mobilize not only the ministry’s workforce but also relevant stakeholders from the private sector and civil society reflects her effective communication and negotiation skills. She is known for her collaborative approach, forging strategic partnerships, and leveraging the expertise of individuals across different sectors. By adopting a participatory and inclusive decision-making process, she has ensured that policies and reforms in the education sector have taken into account the diverse perspectives and needs of the stakeholders. Her leadership style has fostered a culture of innovation, accountability, and transparency within the ministry.

Minister Betty Edu’s exceptional performance and unwavering dedication to public service have undoubtedly positioned her as Tinubu’s Best Performing Minister. From her Senate confirmation to her brilliant outings in various sectors, she has consistently demonstrated her commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda. Her transformative initiatives in education, women and youth empowerment, healthcare, and infrastructure development have left an indelible mark on the nation’s progress.

Rating her as the best performing minister is obviously and evidently not a paid promotion as some others would have done. Her works spoke to the hears of billions, and her impacts have placed her in a position where her worth is unquantifiable and priceless. It has become evident that Minister Betty Edu has indeed left an indelible mark on Tinubu’s administration.

In the realm of politics, true success is measured by the ability to make a positive and lasting impact on the lives of the citizens. Minister Betty Edu’s performance during the last six months of Tinubu’s administration exemplifies the qualities of an exceptional minister. Her remarkable achievements, leadership qualities, and unwavering commitment to public service have solidified her position as Tinubu’s best minister. As the nation moves forward, it is crucial to recognize and support individuals like Minister Edu, who have the vision, drive, and capability to drive transformative change and pave the way for a brighter future for all Nigerians.

Dumebi Kachikwu Urges Personal Responsibility and Change to Tackle Lingering Storm in Nigeria

In a powerful address to the Nigerian people, Dumebi Kachikwu, Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress in the 2023 General Elections, has called for personal responsibility and change in order to address the longstanding challenges facing the nation.

Addressing the nation in the new year, Kachikwu acknowledged the storms that have overshadowed Nigeria's development for decades. He highlighted the persistent issues of unity, development, and commitment to the nation. Kachikwu expressed concern over the blame game that has perpetuated the nation's woes, urging Nigerians to take personal responsibility instead of pointing fingers at politicians, public servants, or other groups.

The recent 2023 general elections further exposed the divisions within the nation, prompting Kachikwu to emphasize the need for change. He posed an important question: "Who pays the price for change?" Kachikwu emphasized that to move forward, Nigerians must collectively answer this question in the year 2024. Failure to do so, he warned, would result in continued devastation caused by the storms of inequity, inequality, corruption, religious persecution, infrastructure deficits, insecurity, as well as failing education and healthcare sectors.

Kachikwu argued that Nigeria's problems are man-made and require personal sacrifices to bring about the desired change. He urged Nigerians to accept their personal responsibility and make the sacrifices necessary to mitigate these storms. Social media outrage and hashtags, he noted, will not bring about lasting solutions. Instead, he emphasized the importance of personal transformation and commitment to the common good.

Highlighting the need for Nigeria to no longer be associated with wasted opportunities and squandered resources, Kachikwu urged his fellow citizens to make their nation great. He emphasized that shortcuts and blame games will not suffice; the true price for change lies in personal commitment and change for the greater good.

In conclusion, Kachikwu called on all Nigerians to embrace personal responsibility and make the right decisions in the year 2024. He expressed faith in God's guidance and protection in the journey toward a brighter future for Nigeria.
Politics / 2024 Budget: Speaker Abass, 10th House Have Delivered On Promise -agbese by aguele(m): 12:39pm On Dec 31, 2023
Deputy Spokesperson, House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese, has congratulated Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Chairman of Appropriation Committee, Hon. Abubakar Bichi and the entire Members of the 10th House, for delivering on the promise on the 2024 budget.

The legislators had, during the special plenary on Saturday, passed a record N28.7 trillion as the budget for 2024, with the appropriation increasing by N1.27 trillion — from the N27.5 trillion proposed by President Bola Tinubu.

Out of the N28.7 trillion, the sum of N1, 742, 786, 788,150 was allocated for statutory transfers; recurrent expenditure amounts to N8, 768, 513, 380, 852; capital expenditure stands at N9, 995,143, 298, 028 and debt service was set at N8, 270, 960, 606, 831.

Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Hon. Bichi, had, while presenting the report at Saturday's plenary, explained the rationale behind increasing the estimates of the appropriation Bill, saying revenue-generating agencies and Government Owned Enterprises (GOEs) had a meeting with the Committee and have pledged a substantial revenue increase in 2024 to support the budget.

While reacting Saturday night, Hon. Agbese lauded the painstaking efforts of his colleagues, especially the leadership of the House and the Appropriation Committee, at ensuring the 2024 Appropriation Bill was passed as promised.

This sacrifice, Agbese said, "Nigerians will not take this for granted", adding that, "the 10th House is known for creating discomfort for its Members, in other to make Nigerians comfortable. This is the People's House and I'm glad the People are better off with the kind of leadership being provided here".

The deputy Spokesperson recalled how the House adjourned its plenary for three weeks to enable various Committees interfaced with relevant agencies and scrutinized the 2024 budget estimates.

He said, "at a point, we were almost going to spend our Christmas celebrations in the office. We had to suspend the House rules and were coming to the National Assembly on non-working days (weekends) and many times staying back at non-office hours.

"Today that is Saturday and at a time when everyone is out of his station preparing for new year celebration with his family, we came all out for the budget to be passed. I thank God we fulfilled our promise. The 10th House under His Excellency, RT. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas must be commended for this.

"I'm sure too, that the executive would be glad that the legislative arm lived up to its mandate and expectations. We are in alignment with the manifestos contained in the 'Renewed Hope Agenda' of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and with the resolve of all of us to sustain Nigeria on the pedestral of January-December budget circle".

Hon. Agbese, who represents Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency of Benue State, also hailed the decision of Hon. Bichi-led Appropriation Committee for allocating the differential N1.27 trillion to the capital component rather than recurrent expenditure.

"This is a good decision. This is the first time the capital component of the nation's budget is bigger than recurrent", he added.

It would be recalled that, President Tinubu presented a budget of N27.5 trillion to a joint section of the National Assembly on November 29 in Abuja.

The Speaker, RT. Hon. Abbas, had during the budget presentation, said President Tinubu’s government could not afford to fail Nigerians by changing the rots and charting a new course for the masses.

According to the Speaker, it is well-known that millions of citizens are living through difficult times.

Also, during a resumed plenary session of Tuesday, 19th December, 2023; following the resumption of the green chamber after a brief recess to allow committees to scrutinise the budget estimates submitted by the President; Speaker Abbas had assured Nigerians that the 2024 budget would be passed on Saturday, 30th December, 2023.

Today, we gather here to pay tribute to a leader who fearlessly spoke his mind, leaving an indelible mark on our lives.

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu was a paragon of boldness and fearlessness. His spirit knew no bounds when it came to standing up for what he believed in, consequences be damned. He possessed a rare courage that allowed him to express his thoughts, whether they were received as good or bad. His words resonated with unwavering honesty, a testament to his commitment to truth and justice. In a world often mired in silence and complacency, his unwavering voice served as a beacon of inspiration.

The impact of Governor Akeredolu's leadership on Ondo State will be a subject of discourse and how his guidance brought about transformative changes in the lives of countless individuals will soon be examined.

Like every mortal in greatness, Governor Akeredolu was not immune to imperfections. Like all of us, he had his flaws and shortcomings. But it was through acknowledging and accepting these imperfections that he demonstrated his humanity. His willingness to learn from his mistakes and strive for personal growth served as a powerful example, reminding us that perfection is not the measure of a person.

As I bid farewell to Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, an overwhelming sadness engulf my heart. The loss of a leader, a cherished friend, and a revered learned brother Silk leaves a void that will take time to be filled. Yet, I find solace in the inspiration and enduring legacy he leaves behind. The lives he touched, the dreams he nurtured, the positive change he wrought—all will continue to bear witness to his remarkable spirit.

May Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu's soul find eternal rest, cradled in the arms of serenity.

Rest in peace, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN.

Politics / Edo Apc Chieftain Fires Back At Amosun Over Attack On Senator Adams Oshiomhole by aguele(m): 6:33am On Dec 22, 2023
Without mincing words, Senator Ibikunle Amosun is one of the deadly and cancerous viruses that the Senator Adams Oshiomhole-led NWC had to fight and boot out of the APC body polity. You and your likes were the dangers that APC had to confront during Oshiomhole’s tenure as National Chairman.

Nigerians will recall how you constituted yourself into a cabal within and outside the villa, plotting against the party after your unpopular and weak candidate lost the primaries. You plotted the downfall of the party in your state by sponsoring your candidate to fly another party’s flag during the 2019 election, but you failed woefully.

You were one of the evil politicians that connived, plotted, and deceived former President Mohammadu Buhari to preside over an illegally constituted NEC to dissolve the NWC in the summer of the year 2020. The patriotic spirit and loyalty of our leader Adams Oshiomhole restrained members of the then NWC from seeking redress in a court of competent jurisdiction.

Available records shows that the Adams Oshiomhole-led NWC as National Chairman remains the platinum era of the party since it was formed winning several states for the party and defeating incumbent senators in opposition parties and getting majority for the APC at all levels. Yourself and Senator Saraki won't forget Oshiomhole for a long time. He was your albatross, he neutralized your anti-democratic credentials, insisted on party supremacy and today APC is still standing tall thanks to the principled position he took then.

We won't also forget in a hurry how you connived with the Judas Iscariots in Edo state to get a black market injunction to illegally remove our leader as the National Chairman of the party albeit clandestinely because of his perceived closeness to now President Asiwaju Bola Tinubu but the ways of men are not the ways of God, today, Tinubu is not just Mr President and C-In-C of Federal Republic of Nigeria , Oshiomhole is a Distinguished Senator, where are you now?

While we don’t want to glorify you with a dignified response, we challenge you to a debate over your own educational qualifications and credentials. You lack the moral and social rights to speak on another person’s educational qualifications when the public knows your antecedent. Senator Adams Oshiomhole remains one of the most cerebral public figures in Nigeria’s contemporary history with a deep understanding of development economics, law, human development, human rights and politics. What are you known for outside been a former governor or Senator? The quality of a human is not in how many certificates he displays in his library but the impact he makes in the overall development of humanity.

No matter how you try hard to twist the events leading up to the 2019 elections, Oshiomhole’s place in the political history of the APC and Nigeria in general is reserved and written in platinum.

Politics / Gov Alia Is A Dictator, Running Benue Like Parish, APC Lawmakers Cry Out by aguele(m): 10:33pm On Dec 21, 2023
***urge Tinubu to call him to order

Lawmakers elected into the National Assembly under the umbrella of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), on Thursday, came hard on the Governor of Benue State, Fr. Hyacinth Alia, describing him as “a dictator” who is running the state government like his personal business.

Rising from a one-day retreat organised in National Assembly on Thursday, the Lawmakers, under the aegis of Benue APC National Assembly Caucus, also called on President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, to quickly prevail on the Governor, before he runs the state aground, saying, Alia’s tendencies could cost the party a defeat in subsequent elections in the state, if he is not quiuckly called to order.

“We the undersigned are members of the National Assembly Caucus elected on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform from Benue State. Having watched with apprehension the absence of democratic leadership in Benue State in the last six (6) months exemplified by the arrogant and egocentric conduct of Governor Hyacinth I Alia, we have decided to draw the attention of Mr President and other leaders of APC in Nigeria to seek their immediate intervention before the fortunes of APC in Benue State are totally destroyed”, the text of press statement after the retreat, reads.

Reading further, Leader of the Caucus and Senator representing Benue North West, Senator Titus Zam, said, the matter had been reported severally to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, who has been mediating to see that things were normalised.

“It is necessary to state from the onset that, we have collectively and individually drawn the attention of the leader of the APC in Benue, Sen. Dr. George Akume Secretary to the Government of the Federation who has on several occasions pleaded for patience from us in the anticipation of a possible change of attitude from His Excellency Governor Hyacinth Alia, rather than change for the better.

“Governor Alia has become more emboldened and has continued to treat us and the party in general in the most disgusting, disrespectful and disingenuous manner”, he said.

In retrospect, the APC Lawmakers said, “Fr. Alia only came to reap where he did not sow. In any case, you are well aware of the rejection his candidacy received from older members of the party including litigations in several courts of Law up to the Supreme Court of Nigeria, it took the strident support of Sen. Dr. George Akume to extricate his candidacy from the destructive grip of his co-aspirants and eventual victory at the polls.

“Today, the ungrateful Fr. Alia, who had barely joined APC two months before the Governorship primaries assumes a messianic posture and tend to appropriate the victory of APC in Benue State as a product of his so-called popularity; without regard to the painstaking and systematic efforts of the subsisting formidable political structure which has enthroned all the governors in the State before him.

“The question begging for answers is; why did the self-acclaimed popular priest not contest on the platform of either APGA, PDP or other smaller political parties in Benue State?

“For clarity's sake, let us contextualize some of the dictatorial and egocentric tendencies of Governor Alia and his poor treatment of Benue APC in the last six (6) months of his administration in Benue State.

“The election of the speaker of Benue House of Assembly. The position of the speaker was zoned to the Jembagh bloc of Benue North West Senatorial District, coincidentally the birthplace of the SGF, Sen. Dr. George Akume, whereas APC has 22 members out of a total of 32 members of the Assembly. Governor Alia connived with former Governor Gabriel Suswam of PDP to produce a speaker different from the candidate preferred by APC. In the contest for the position of the Speaker, Governor Alia held midnight meetings at the Residence of Sen. Gabriel Suswam and got Ten (10) PDP members to align with 7 recalcitrant APC members to beat the APC preferred candidate by the margin of 2 votes; thus began his unholy alliance with PDP to undermine and maltreat the legitimate members of APC in Benue State.

“After the Speakership debacle, the party again nominated and made a spread of principal officers of the assembly, comprising; Majority Leader, Deputy Majority Leader, Chief Whip and Deputy Chief Whip. Surprisingly, the speaker joyfully agreed with the opposition party on all nominations from the Peoples Democratic Party as endorsed by the State Chairman of the PDP and Secretary but jettisoned the list submitted by APC and rather accepted the list that was unilaterally submitted by the Governor through his Chief of Staff.

“It was an embarrassing experience for the Party having to face the dejection in the hands of an administration it labored hard to install. However, the party submitted and sustained their faith in the Governor and his government even when they felt aggrieved and resorted to stand by the advice of the leader of the party Sen. Dr. George Akume whose counsel has always been for the party to keep praying for Fr. Alia to succeed.

“in the first meeting of the stakeholders that was held in government house the chairman of the party Comrade Austine Agada publicly went on his knees took all the blames even though there was no blame and apologized to the governor and party members requesting they put behind the State Assembly imbroglio and come together to save the party, in the meeting, the governor praised the leader of the party with promise to always work together so that Benue and the party will enjoy democratic dividends. He also pledged that going forward he was going to involve the party and other critical stakeholders in sensitive decisions particularly in the nomination of commissioners and local government caretaker committees, a promise he unfortunately kept in breach.

“In appointing his commissioners, His Excellency again exercised a sole discretion without recourse to the normal tradition of requesting for nominations from the local governments and disregarded the zoning arrangements and permutations and went ahead to make his independent choices as he deemed soothing, again the party did not oppose him but rather gave him support since it was his own State Executive and Security Council and needed people he could vouch for.

“The nomination of caretaker committees to man the various local governments was when the party received the most humiliation, governor Alia had thrown back to party members during the Stakeholders meeting by demanding an immediate nomination of 3 candidates each for the position of Caretaker Chairman, Deputy and Secretary as well Supervisory Councilors across the twenty three local government demanding for two slots of supervisory councilors from each of the local governments, this was first time a governor will demand such from the caretaker council formation against the usual one slot per local government. The party jubilantly agreed and followed the directive by holding meetings, and painstakingly submitting their various lists with the sigh of relief and sense of belonging.

“But surprisingly, when the nominations were finally announced the party was amazed that ninety percent of the names were outside the nominees that were sent to the governor at his directive. In all these misgivings and disaffection the announcement of the caretaker committee marked the pinnacle of a noticeably bad relationship between governor Alia and APC in Benue State and this has angered a lot of party men and women in the State which can be justified by all standards.

“Disrespect and disregard to members of NASS: Governor Hyacinth Alia since assumption of duty has not held any meeting with NASS members of Benue State who were elected on the same APC platform with him neither does he pick or return their telephone calls not to talk about consulting them on political matters in the State. He has assumed the posture of a conqueror who does not care about the welfare, nor status of National Assembly Members in his leadership of Benue State. In every State of the federation members of NASS are working in synergy with their governors to attract development from the center to their State of origin.

“Governor Alia has no single known developmental blueprint for Benue State. As at the moment, nobody in Benue State is aware of the direction of his administration, what he practices is personal rule and this is replicated by the lopsided appointment he has made in the State so far, with his immediate community of Kunav cornering all the strategic positions in government.

“Implications of his undemocratic rule in Benue State; the grave consequences of Governor Alia personal rule is that, the generality of APC members who are excluded and abandoned are beginning to lose faith in the APC led administration in Benue State. Therefore, care must be taken to safeguard APC from the tyrannical leadership of Governor Alia so as to prepare the party for subsequent electoral victories in the future. Governor Alia's street showmanship of non-existent huge support base is not predicated on a substantive love of a massive street followers, does not translate to the real political support which only leaders can guarantee”.

In addition, the Member representing Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, Hon. Philip Agbese accused the Governor of nepotism, saying he appointed over 30 key political officers from his immediate clan in Vandeikya LGA, whereas, the Idoma speaking people from Benue South were grossly shortchanged in the scheme of things.

The Lawmakers, comprising of Senators and House of Representatives Members elected under APC from Benue State, also used the occasion to pledge loyalty to President Tinubu, the National Chairman of APC, Umar Ganduje, Sen. Akume, the State Chairman of APC, Comrade Austine Agada and his state led executive.

Politics / MKK: Tribute To The Apostle Of Transformation by aguele(m): 6:54am On Dec 18, 2023
By:Phillip Agbese

I was not surprised when President Bola Tinubu renominated the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited for another term of 5 years. If there's anything the world can confidently associate with the president, it is his desire to recruit the best hands to get the job done.

I had to take time out of my busy schedule to pen this piece to tell how important this subject matter is to me. This opinion has nothing to do with the House of Representatives.

I will start on a high note. The NNPC helmsman Mele Kyari is a man of courage. He has continued to act like a stranger within the oil and gas sector. He has refused to partake in the pilfering of our commonwealth. He is just a different breed, and I am not surprised that President Tinubu has not only inherited him but made him a focal person in his administration.

The reasons are plausible. The president knows what we do not know. And the buck stops at his table. Those conversant with the inner workings of the oil and gas sector would attest that Mele Kyari has brought tangible innovations in the industry that have yielded and still yield results.

I stumbled on a piece that highlighted alternative funding facilities. In the writer's words, Mele Kayai has secured alternative facilities for the NPDC and some Joint venture projects to facilitate the further development of assets. They include the N875.75m NPDC OML 65 Alternative Funding and Technical Services package with CMES-OMS Petroleum Development Company and the $3.15bn Alternative Financing Package with Sterling Exploration and Energy Production Company Limited (SEEPCO) and other partners for the development of NPDC's OML 13.

The writer also averred that under Mele Kyari, "the NNPC commenced the construction of the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline project and saved over $300m from the initial amount. The AKK project has the capacity to make available around 2.2 billion cubic feet of gas per day with expansion of the pipeline systems to double delivery capacity from 1.5BCF/D to over 3.5BCF/D."

I was not surprised by these feats among a host of others. It goes to tell about the personality of Mele Kyari that buttressed my earlier position, describing him as a different breed. Unfortunately, Nigerians have not had the opportunity to analyse the operations of the NNPC under Mele Kyari. He has been judged even before the beginning of the race.

This is typical in this clime, but Mele Kyari could care less. He has focused on his job, fulfilling his mandate to revitalize our oil and gas sector. I know he is media shy and would rather concentrate on his job than grace the pages of newspapers.

Recall that upon his re-appointment, he urged industry stakeholders to stop issuing goodwill messages on his re-appointment. Instead, he restated his commitment to stabilising the oil industry and enhancing service delivery for increased revenue. This is sublime and the quintessential Mele Kyari.

Nigerians must study Mele Kyari more to understand his passion and commitment to re-positioning the oil and gas sector. The essence of this piece is to advise Nigerians to be circumspect in their analysis of the operations of the NNPC in the oil and gas sector.

A peep into his career would reveal a lot about him. He is familiar with the dynamics in the oil and gas sector. At some point, he was the General Manager of Crude Oil Stock management. He performed creditably well when promoted to Group General Manager to bring his expertise to bear in crude oil stock management and sales.

Hard work and innovation are what Mele Kyari represents. This much he has exuded since his appointment to lead the NNPC. Industry stakeholders can attest this, hence the torrent of goodwill messages that poured in after his re-appointment.

I call him the apostle of transformation for a reason. He has been nicknamed Mr Automation by industry stakeholders as the NNPC IT Division automated the Key Performance Indicator Dashboard across the entire IT Enterprise and Architecture, thereby improving reporting efficiency and real-time performance tracking. The Microsoft Enterprise Additional Licenses for NNPC Digital Transformation initiatives were also activated, leading to an estimated cost-saving of over $1 million. This is outstanding.

There are many more that are not in the public space. I often tried to imagine that if the NNPC boss enjoys praising singing; the media space would have been flooded. But, no, he elected to walk the talk because talk is cheap.

Are we aware that the innovations at the NNPC have been recognized globally? In 2021, the NNPC won an overall Best Company in Oil and Gas Reforms award at the Open Government Partnership Global Awards for implementing a Beneficial Ownership registry to end anonymous companies in their countries.

Establishing the beneficial ownership register helped Nigeria track, reduce and arrest corrupt practices undertaken by companies or beneficial owners of companies. The list is endless, and that is why he is the apostle of transformation.

National Fire Safety Summit Ignites Crucial Dialogues on Disaster Preparedness in Abuja

.....Critical Stakeholders Lead Initiative to Promote Safety Consciousness Among Nigerians

In a concerted effort to enhance safety consciousness and disaster preparedness among Nigerians, the National Fire Safety Summit was held on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, in Abuja. Organized by Unander Nigeria Limited, a leading fire and safety services consultancy, in collaboration with PR Times Africa, a leading African media group. The summit gathered a distinguished cast of partners and participants, including the Federal Fire Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), Nigerian Red Cross Society, Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP), and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The summit served as a platform for stakeholders in disaster management and the general public to discuss and strategize on collaborative efforts to prevent and effectively manage fire disasters across the nation. Participants emphasized the crucial role of cooperation among all stakeholders in achieving this goal.
One of the pressing issues highlighted during the summit was the removal of fire hydrants from streets and neighborhoods in major cities across the country. Representatives of the Commandant General of the Federal Fire Service expressed their concerns, noting that this removal impedes their ability to carry out their duties efficiently. The limited water capacity in their trucks, lasting only a few minutes, necessitates frequent returns to offices for refills, hampering the swift response required during emergencies.
In response to these challenges, the organizers announced plans for an extensive post-summit public enlightenment campaign. The campaign will encompass fire safety drills in public spaces, first aid training sessions, social media campaigns, and school and community outreaches. These initiatives aim to disseminate the strategic insights gleaned from the summit's discussions among participants and experts.
The National Fire Safety Summit represents a significant step towards building a safer and more resilient Nigeria. The collaboration among key stakeholders underscores the shared commitment to safeguarding lives, property, and communities from the devastating impact of fire disasters. As the summit concludes, the focus shifts towards implementing actionable strategies and fostering a culture of safety nationwide.
Stay tuned for updates on the forthcoming public enlightenment campaign and initiatives aimed at ensuring a safer Nigeria.
Politics / Unemployed Youths Laud Tinubu, Edu's Giant Strides In Addressing Poverty by aguele(m): 9:46am On Dec 17, 2023
The Coalition of Unemployed Youths in Nigeria (CUYN) has hailed the Federal Government's drive towards poverty alleviation across the country.

The group said President Bola Tinubu through the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, is implementing some groundbreaking initiatives and interventions to better the lives of the common Nigerian.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday in Abuja, the convener Comrade Adamu Adamu said Edu has demonstrated unwavering dedication and commitment to alleviating the plight of the unemployed youth in the country.

The Coalition also hailed her tireless commitment to nation-building and efforts to actualise  President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.

"We, the millions-strong Coalition of Unemployed Youths in Nigeria, have tasted the bitter tang of unfulfilled dreams, the gnawing frustration of untapped potential. But like a diamond hidden in the rough, hope lay dormant, waiting for the right hand to polish it, to reveal its brilliance, and that hand, belongs to Dr. Betta Edu," he said.

"A woman whose heart beats in rhythm with the aspirations of the disenfranchised, whose mind teems with solutions for the marginalized, and whose spirit burns with unwavering faith in the power of the human spirit.

"The new wave of Renewed Hope Agenda, spearheaded by Dr Betta Edu has taken us by surprise. This particular wave of Renewed Hope Agenda has provided a glimmer of hope for the unemployed youth in Nigeria. It has been duly observed by us that, Under her leadership, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation has implemented various initiatives aimed at empowering the youth and creating opportunities for them to thrive.

"From skills acquisition programs to entrepreneurship support, these initiatives have played a vital role in equipping us with the necessary tools to secure a better future. This Renewed Hope Agenda is not just a policy document; it is a symphony of opportunity, composed with the ink of empathy and conducted by the maestro of action. Each initiative, each program, is a carefully crafted note, weaving together a melody of empowerment, a harmony of self-reliance.

"Look around you, See the N-Power program blossoming, its tendrils reaching out to embrace thousands of our youth, equipping them with the skills and resources to become architects of their destinies. Witness the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP), a financial lifeline extended to countless micro-entrepreneurs, igniting the spark of self-sufficiency in their hearts.

"Feel the ground tremble beneath the collective steps of our young farmers, empowered by the Agricultural Revolution to till the land and reap the fruits of their labor. One key aspect of the Renewed Hope Agenda that we must reveal to Nigerians today, is its focus on inclusivity. Dr Betta Edu has ensured that no one is left behind, regardless of their geographical location or socioeconomic background.

"Through targeted interventions in rural areas, she has bridged the gap between urban and rural youth, providing equal opportunities for all. This inclusivity has ignited a sense of unity and national cohesion amongst the youth, fostering harmony and progress in our great nation. We are perplexed by this development and mode of operation, and we can only conclude that this is a well-executed agenda.

"Furthermore, the Honourable Minister has displayed exceptional leadership skills in her role. She has been instrumental in forging partnerships with both local and international organizations, such as the World Bank and the International Labour Organization".
Politics / Urgent Appeal To President Tinubu To Sell Correctional Centers For Education Fun by aguele(m): 8:21pm On Dec 14, 2023
Urgent Appeal to President Tinubu To Sell Correctional Centers for Education Funding.

Dear Mr President,

I write on the need to sell some of the Correctional Centers in prime areas to raise funds for education in Nigeria.

Firstly, I emphasize the pressing need for additional funding to support the development of education in our nation. Nigeria's education sector has been facing numerous challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, limited resources, and unequal access to quality education. These obstacles have hindered the growth and potential of our youth, preventing them from achieving their full capabilities.

To address this funding gap, I propose considering the sale of underutilized assets, particularly the Correctional Centers located in prime areas like the Ikoyi Prison and others in high value locations in Nigeria.

The market value of the Ikoyi Prison alone is estimated to be around 50 billion Naira and about half a trillion Naira could be realised from the sale of such centers that dotted the high premium areas in Nigeria.

By divesting such properties, we can generate a substantial influx of funds that can be allocated to improving educational infrastructure, enhancing the quality of teaching, and providing scholarships to deserving students across the country.

I understand that the decision to sell Correctional Centers requires careful consideration, taking into account legal implications, security concerns, and the need to maintain a balanced criminal justice system.

However, I believe that with proper evaluation and planning, we can strike a balance between addressing the funding needs of education and ensuring a well-functioning correctional system.

Secondly, I would like to take this opportunity to commend the Minister of Interior, Hon Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for his laudable policy implementation and unwavering passion for his role. His dedication and commitment to improving the conditions and welfare of inmates in our correctional centers deserve recognition and celebration. His efforts have demonstrated a genuine concern for the well-being and rehabilitation of individuals within the correctional system, aligning with the principles of justice, fairness, and humanity.

I believe that acknowledging and celebrating the Minister's achievements will not only boost his morale but also inspire other public officials to deliver their duties with similar dedication and patriotism.

In conclusion, I kindly request that you consider the proposal to sell select Correctional Centers for education funding.

Thank you for your attention to these matters.

Yours sincerely,

Politics / Saints, Sans And Sinners by aguele(m): 3:14pm On Dec 14, 2023
By Dare Babarinsa THE GUARDIAN December 14, 2023

The honour of becoming a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) has not lost its allure despite its age on the Nigerian scene. The SAN is an affirmation that Nigeria is a great country on the African continent and our strength are the people of Nigeria, the men and women who give substance and meaning to our ‘Nigerianess’.

The list this year is a proof that brilliance and industry can be transmitted through the DNA or acquired through close contact in the other room. What is clear is that you cannot be a SAN if you are not solid intellectually and know your law through and through.

Lawyers are very sensitive about seniority. In those days, Chief Rotimi Williams, the incomparable legend of the Nigerian Bar, would occupy a whole front bench in the court room while lesser mortals, including the venerable Chief Gani Fawehinmi, would dare not contest the space with him.

Today, there are many Senior Advocate of Nigeria, including my dear aburo, Kayode Ajulo, who at 49 is one of the youngest in this year’s team. Yet, the Inner Bar, as it is called, remains an exclusive sanctum for the chosen few. Every SAN has to prove that he or she is worth it. It is almost impossible to see a SAN and have any doubt about his or her competence.

The legal profession has done very well in protecting the value and quality of the award. During the colonial era and after, until Nigeria became a Republic in 1963, only few lawyers were admitted into the ranks of Queen’s Counsel. Among them of course was Chief Williams, the first Attorney-General of the defunct Western Region.

In 1975, the SAN honour was instituted with Chief Williams and Dr Nabo Graham-Douglas, former Attorney General of the Federation, as the first recipients.

They were joined later by a select few that included Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and Chief R.A. Fani-Kayode, former Deputy Premier of the defunct Western Region.

Over the years, the likes of Chief Richard Akinjide, Mr Kehinde Sofola, Chief G.O.K Ajayi, Chief Olisa Chukura, Chief Mudiaga Odje, Prince Bolasodun Ajibola, Alhaji A.G.F. Abdul-Rasaq, Mr I.A Bankole Oki, Chief Bola Ige and Professor Ben Nwabueze joined the rank.

In 1981, Mrs Folake Solanke became the first woman to wear the precious silk of the Senior Advocate, opening the door for the likes of Funke Aboyade, Otunba C.O Ajayi-Okunnua, Agada Elachi, Folashade Alli (daughter of Aare Babalola) and Funmi Falana, wife of Femi, also a SAN.

This year’s list has demonstrated enduring adherence to quality by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee headed by His Lordship, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, the Chief Justice of the Federation.

Ajulo is typical of those who made the list. He was born in 1974, and had his law degree from University of Jos in 1999. He has been in private legal practice since he left the Nigerian Law School in 2001. Like many of his colleagues, he is also a politician and human rights advocate. He was the Labour Party senatorial candidate for Abuja during the 2011 general election and served as the General Secretary of the party from 2014 to 2015. He is the Registrar of the Abuja Diocese of the Church of Nigeria, (Anglican Communion). Now he is a member of the Aristocracy of the Nigerian Bar.

This is one honour where Federal Character does not count much. That is why it is possible to have Femi and Funmi Falana both wear the silk. The patriarch of Funmi’s family in Akure was Justice Akinola Aguda, the former Chief Justice of Botswana, who later became the last Chief Justice of the old Western State as well as the first Chief Justice of Ondo State. He was the pioneer Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, at the University of Lagos where I first met him.

The Falanas are not alone in getting double portion. Chief Gboyega Awomolo is married to Mrs Victoria Oluwafunmilayo Awomolo and both of them are SANs. There are also families where both fathers and children are in the Inner Bar. The late Professor Gabriel Olawoyin and his son are both Senior Advocates. Chief Wole Olanipekun and his son Bode are both Senior Advocates.

Since this requires intellectual rigour, it is not surprising that Ekiti State is well represented. Among the SANs from Ekiti are: Tunde Adeoye, who got his laurel this year and the giants like Chief Olanipekun, Aare Babalola, Falana, Gbenga Oyebode, Olawale Fapohunda, Dele Adesina, Dayo Akinlaja, Olu Daramola and Gboyega Oyewole. It would not be surprising if in future, Ekiti comes to dominate the legal profession as it once did the teaching profession in the old Western Region.

There is no doubt that the SAN laurel helps to differentiate the boys from the men. In most instances, the Attorney-General of the Federation is often chosen from the ranks of SANs. I could think of the likes of Chief Akinjide, Chike Ofodile, Bola Ajibola, Michael Agbamuche, Olu Onagoruwa, Kanu Agabi, Bola Ige, Akin Olujimi, Bayo Ojo, Michael Aondoakaa, Adetokunbo Kayode, Mohammed Bello-Adoke, Abubakar Malami and the current AG, Lateef Fagbemi.

The Bar has done well by steering the honour from politics. Sometime during the military era, it was becoming apparent that many of the leading human rights lawyers would not be considered for the honour. People like Olisa Agbakoba, Chief Gani Fawehinmi and Femi Falana were conspicuously left out of the honour list for many years.

For their roaring opposition to military rule, people like Fawehinmi were regarded as sinners who should not be touched even with a long pole. One day, Fawehinmi was invited to deliver a public lecture at the Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife. The students were so elated that they gave the fiery lawyer the honour of becoming the Senior Advocate of the Masses (SAM).

Fawehinmi cherished the honour of being our SAM. Though in the end, he was given the SAN title, he remained one of us till the very end, hoisting the flag in the hottest part of the battlefield for human rights. I am not surprised that many of his former junior colleagues in the human rights struggle, including graduates from his chambers, are today holding top positions. I am talking of people like Tayo Oyetibo, His Lordship, Justice Abiodun Akinyemi and Festus Keyamo.

Of course, no chamber has produced more SANs than that of Aare Afe Babalola, who from his headquarters in Ibadan, has spread his tentacles across the country. From his chamber alone he has produced more SANs and judges than any other.

Other SANs have arisen from unexpected places and have become giants of the bar in their own right. We have people like former Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo, Wale Babalakin, late Deji Sasegbon, Adebayo Adenipekun, Olumide Olanipekun, Yusuf Ali, Rotimi Jacobs, Akin Onigbinde, Mike Igbokwe and Henry Oghogho Ogbodu, my old roommate at the University of Lagos.

In the past, it used to be journalism and law. Today, law has become the preferred profession of politicians. Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), the Governor of Ondo State, was President of the Nigerian Bar Association. Lawyers like Babatunde Fashola (SAN), Babatunde Ogala (SAN), Adeniyi Adegbonmire (SAN) and many others are holding important positions in the government and the legislature.

It is important now that we have many top priests in the temple of justice, the citizens would have easier access to social justice. Unlike the military era, the dichotomy between saints and sinners is no longer clear, but we expect a clearer view of justice.

As of now, a tragic drama is going on in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where social justice is confronting a mob trying to remove her cloth of sanctity. We hope the army of SANs would soon be deployed to that theatre to serve the interest of the people and the Rule of Law.

Ondo Political Crisis: Coalition of Interest Groups Salutes Ondo State Leaders & Citizens

The Ondo State Coalition of Interest Groups expresses deep gratitude to our fellow citizens, both within the country and abroad, for their unwavering dedication to democracy and the restoration of governance in Ondo State. We recognize and appreciate the collective voices that have advocated for an end to proxy governance during the absence of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu in Ondo State over the past few months.

We are particularly pleased with the display of love for our dear state and the active participation of all individuals in the various engagements organized by the group, hosted by the Convener Dr. Kayode Ajulo, OON, SAN. We cannot but salute the commitment of numerous civic organizations within and outside Ondo State, who consistently demanded the supremacy of the rule of law and constitutional order during the political crisis caused by those who sought personal gains from the unfortunate illness of Governor Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu. We must also acknowledge the invaluable role played by our esteemed elder statesmen, led by Pa Reuben Fasoranti, and the Ondo Redemption Front (ORF), patriotic members of the Ondo State Executive Council led by Engr Radar Obe among other groups.

While normalcy is gradually being restored in Ondo State following the intervention of President Bola Tinubu, we emphasize that the journey is not yet complete. We urge the government, under the leadership of Acting Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, to ensure the restoration of hope to our people by resuming full-time governance and making up for the lost ground in the past months.

We implore stakeholders in Ondo State, especially politicians within the ruling party, to provide the necessary support to the government for the overall well-being of our people. This collaborative effort ensures the continuity of governance and stability in our beloved state.

Together, we exemplify the strength of civic engagement and the power of a united citizenry. Let this serve as a testament to the resilience of our democracy.

Ondo State remains a source of immense pride.
Politics / Mele Kyari: Former, Serving Lawmakers Commend Tinubu Over Re-appointment by aguele(m): 9:05pm On Dec 12, 2023
...say NNPCL Enthroned transparency

The Forum of Former and Serving Lawmakers in Nigeria has hailed President Bola Tinubu for reappointing Mile Kyari as the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.

In a letter of appreciation to the President signed by its national president, Hon. Yemi Alli, the Forum said the appointment is well deserved and an indication of the president's ambition to bring an economic turnaround in the downstream oil sector.

Alli noted that Kyari has enthroned transparency and accountable in the oil and gas sector, adding that his impressive ideas and knowledge have brought massive improvement.

"Mr. President Sir, many of us are happy with this appointment because the GMD has demonstrated commitment to drive revenue growth and fortify the resilience of the economy in the Petroleum industry," the leader said.

"Before his appointment, Nigeria fell far below their OPEC quota of crude oil production for over eight years. But the award of pipeline surveillance contract to Tantita pipeline security outfit, owned and controlled by Tompolo, has caused over 70% of the oil criminals in the Niger Delta region to quit operations. This has increased the number of barrels produced per day (bpd), giving Nigeria a huge boost to be able to meet her OPEC quota.

"Apart from recording profits for the company, Kyari has also led the NNPCL to resolve age-old disputes with its business partners, notably the International Oil Companies (IOCs).

"The Kyari-led NNPCL also paid Nigeria’s joint venture cash call arrears to the IOCs totaling $5.1Billion. This was made possible through the introduction of the Alternative Funding Approach (AFA), which replaced the erstwhile cash call payment. The AFA model has allowed for the utilization of NNPCL's to finance its share of joint venture operations, thereby reducing the country’s reliance on external borrowing and increasing the flow of investment into the industry."

The group, however, reiterated its support for the President and his administration.

*Former Senate President Ebute Writes Tinubu, Hails Reappointment Of Kyari As NNPCL CEO*

Third Republic Senate President, Ameh Ebute, has applauded President Bola Tinubu over the reappointment of Mele Kyari as the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.

Senator Ebute, in a letter to the President, described the reappointment of Kyari as well deserved and a reward for a job well done.

Recall that President Tinubu last month appointed Pius Akinyelure as the new Board Chairman of the NNPCL with effect from December 1, 2023.

This was as he reappointed the incumbent Group Chief Executive Officer of the company, Mele Kyari, for another term.

In reaction, Senator Ebute thanked President Tinubu for picking Kyari, who he said has displayed unwavering dedication, remarkable competence, and exceptional leadership qualities.

In his previous role as Group Managing Director, he said Kyari demonstrably transformed the NNPC, breathing new life into an organisation that was long plagued by inefficiency, opacity, and mismanagement.

"Mallam Mele Kele Kyari has proven himself to be an exceptional leader and a true patriot. His unwavering dedication to the progress of our nation is evident in the transformative changes he has spearheaded during his tenure," the letter partly reads.

"As the Chief Executive Officer of the NNPCL, Mallam Mele Kele Kyari has displayed visionary leadership, a deep understanding of the petroleum industry, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

"Under Mallam Kyari’s stewardship, the NNPC has undergone a paradigm shift. Transparency and accountability have become the cornerstones of the organization’s operations.

"The publication of audited financial statements, the establishment of a robust whistleblower policy, and the implementation of a comprehensive corporate governance framework stand testament to his unwavering commitment to ethical conduct and responsible resource management.

"One of Mallam Mele Kele Kyari’s greatest strengths lies in his ability to solve complex problems with innovative solutions. In a time when our nation faces numerous challenges in the petroleum sector, we need a leader who can navigate through the intricate web of issues and provide sustainable solutions.

"Mallam Mele Kele Kyari’s track record speaks for itself, as he has consistently demonstrated his ability to tackle obstacles head-on and deliver results that benefit the Nigerian people.

"Furthermore, Mallam Mele Kele Kyari has shown himself to be a unifying force within the NNPCL and the broader petroleum industry. He recognizes the importance of collaboration and stakeholder engagement, fostering an environment of trust, transparency, and inclusivity.

"By bridging the gap between various stakeholders, Mallam Mele Kele Kyari has promoted harmony, enabling a more efficient and effective operation within the NNPCL.

"Mallam Kyari’s financial acumen and strategic foresight have yielded remarkable results. He has streamlined operations, reduced costs, and significantly improved the NNPC’s financial performance. This has allowed the organization to invest in critical infrastructure projects, create jobs, and contribute meaningfully to the national economy.

"Beyond his technical expertise, Mallam Kyari possesses a rare quality: the ability to unite and inspire. In a nation often divided by regional and ethnic differences, he has emerged as a unifying figure, working tirelessly to bridge divides and promote national unity."

Ebute, therefore, expressed confidence that Kyari’s re-appointment will not only ensure continuity but also provide the stability and expertise necessary to address the challenges that lie ahead.
Politics / Apology Demanded for Kayode Ajulo SAN, others from Ondo State Government by aguele(m): 5:18pm On Dec 12, 2023
The Ondo Redemption Front has demanded for a public apologies from the Attorney General and Commissioner for justice in Ondo State, Mr Charles Titiloye over his claim, that Dr Kayode Ajulo, OON, SAN, is “spreading misinformation”, when he alerted the public, about the forgery of the signatures of the ailing governor of the State, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu. Recall, that the Senior Advocate of Nigeria was first to expose the forgery of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu's signature by certain members of the Ondo State Government cabinet.

As a group, we demand a public apology from the Ondo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Titiloye, to Dr Kayode Ajulo, OON, SAN, and other patriotic citizens of Ondo state, for the malicious Claim, that he lied, when he alerted the world of forgery of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu's signature, as events, of the past few days, have not only vindicated the legal luminary's claim, but that such, is now a subject of investigation, by various security agencies.

The unethical conduct of Mr Titiloye undermines the trust citizens place in their elected officials and compromises the integrity of our democratic processes.

The citizens of Ondo State deserve transparency and honesty from their government. We further call upon the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into this matter and hold those responsible for the forgery accountable for their actions.

Dr Kayode Ajulo's commitment to exposing corruption and upholding the rule of law must be acknowledged and respected. Failure to address this issue promptly will erode public confidence in the government's ability to uphold the principles of justice and fairness.

We expect the Ondo State Government to take swift and decisive action to rectify this situation and restore the public's trust. Anything less would be a disservice to the people of Ondo State and an affront to the principles of good governance.
