Politics › Buhari: Looters Recruited Niger-Delta Militants Against Us by agwom(op): 6:30pm On Sep 23, 2016 |
President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday explained how and why Nigeria got into trouble.
The president blamed the country's woes the failure of his predecessors, from 1999 to 2015, to save for the rainy days .
He was in New York addressing top rate Nigeria professionals in the United States of America, whom Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Diaspora Matters and International Relations, described as "15 of the best people God ever created."
Among them are top flight aeronautics engineers, physicians, I.T experts, a judge, a top policewoman, entrepreneurs, an import specialist at Customs and Border Protection, professors, two straight A students and many others.
Buhari stated: "I am very pleased with this meeting," President Buhari stated. "Wherever you go in the world, you find highly competent and outstanding Nigerians. They not only make great impact on their host countries and communities, their financial remittances back home also help our economy, particularly at a time like this, when things are down.
"We got into trouble as a country, because we did not save for the rainy day. For example, between 1999 and 2015, when we produced an average of 2.1 million barrels of oil per day, and oil prices stood at an average of $100 per barrel, we did not save, neither did we develop infrastructure. Suddenly, when we came in 2015, oil prices fell to about 30 dollars per barrel.
“I asked; where are the savings? There were none. Where are the railways? The roads? Power? None. I further asked; what did we do with billions of dollars that we made over the years? They said we bought food. Food with billions of dollars? I did not believe, and still do not believe.
“In most parts of Nigeria, we eat what we grow. People in the South eat tubers, those in the North eat grains, which they plant, and those constitute over 60 per cent of what we eat. So, where did the billions of dollars go? We did a lot of damage to ourselves by not developing infrastructure when we had the money.
"Talking of our military, they earned respect serving in places like Burma, Zaire, Sudan, Liberia, Sierra-Leone, and then, suddenly, that same military could no longer secure 14 out of 774 local governments in the country. Insurgents had seized them, calling them some sort of caliphate, and planting their flags there; till we came, and scattered them.
"We raised the morale of our military, changed the leadership, re-equipped and retrained them; USA, Britain, and some other countries helped us, and today, the pride of our military is restored.
"Boko Haram ran riot, killing innocent people in churches, mosques, markets, schools, motor parks, and so on. And they would then shout Allahu Akbar. But if they truly knew Allah, they would not do such evil. Neither Islam, nor any other religion I know of, advocates hurting the innocent. But they shed innocent blood, killed people in their thousands. Now, we have dealt with that insurgency, and subverted their recruitment base."
President Buhari also stated that "those who stole Nigeria dry are not happy. "They recruited the militants against us in the Niger Delta, and began to sabotage oil infrastructure. We lose millions of barrels per day, at a time when every dollar we can earn, counts. It is a disgrace that a minimum of 27 states, out of 36 that we have in Nigeria, can't pay salaries. http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/looters-recruited-n-delta-militants-against-us-buhari/163605.html#FGM6qzFfWOVh502u.99

Politics › PDP’s Problem Can Only Be Resolved Through Dialogue – Sheriff by agwom(op): 5:08pm On Sep 23, 2016*. Modified: 7:51am On Sep 24, 2016 |
By Ben Agande The former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ali Modu Sheriff has reiterated his commitment to the reconciliation process in the party, saying that the statement by the governor of Ekiti state, Ayo Fayose that the courts should be allowed to resolve the leadership crisis in the party “has no impact whatsoever” on the process. Speaking yesterday while inaugurating a faction leadership of the party in Delta state, Sheriff said the problems in the party can only be resolved through dialogue as has been initiated between him and Senator Ahmed Makarfi. It would be recalled that Senators Sheriff and Makarfi early this week resolved to work together to end the leadership crisis that had engulfed the party since May this year. While the move has been hailed by many, the governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose pooh-poohed the initiative, saying “it will not work unless the matter is decided on by the Appeal Court. “When cases are in court you allow the court to lay them to rest. The moment this thing doesn’t favour one side, they will tell you ‘we are still in court. But allow the court to take a stand and reconciliation would be made easy. I’m not against anybody reconciling with each other but when you see that meeting, ask the conveners if governors were briefed” he said. But Senator Sheriff who was represented at the inauguration by his Deputy National Chairman, Dr Cairo Ojuogboh said not minding the outcome of the cases in court, there would still be need for reconciliation. “We want to tell Nigerians that the two leaders,( Sheriff and Makarfi) are committed to reconciliation, and to encourage our teeming supporters that the statement made by Fayose has no bearing on the reconciliation. In spite of what the Appeal Court or Supreme Court decides, there would still be need for peace. It is either we do it before or after the court judgement. “We want to appeal to Fayose to key into the peace process that the two leaders are championing,” he said. Crime › Woman Arrested, Released Over 3 Cups Of Rice by agwom(op): 9:11am On Sep 23, 2016 |
A mother of three who said her children starved for four days was arrested for running away with three cups of rice without paying last Tuesday at Sabon Lugbe, Airport Road, Abuja. Aso Chronicle gathered that the woman went to a shop and asked the shop owner, Mr. Christopher Chinedu, to sell three cups of rice to her and after she was given the rice, she ran away. A witness, Mr Kelvin Nwachukwu, who spoke to our reporter said that the shop owner pursued her until she got to her house, then he went and reported to the police. “When she was arrested and taken to the police station, she was asked why she refused to pay for the rice and she said that her three children had not eaten for four days and she had no hope of feeding them that day so she had to do what she did,” he said. He added that the police took pity on her and pleaded with the shop owner to forgive her. “The police released her after they paid the shop owner for the three cups of rice. They also contributed money and gave her a token to buy more food for her children,” Mr Nwachukwu added. He said he is the woman’s neighbour and doesn’t know her to be a thief. “She even gives food to neighbours when she has. I’m sure it is the harsh economic condition that led her to do what she did. More and more people are becoming desperate so the government has to wake up and revive the economy,” he added.
