The Vice Chancellor of Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State, Professor Dayo Alao has expressed worry that Nigeria’s leaders in the past and present are just a replica of the colonial masters who exploited and impoverished Africans nations. Alao who is a Professor of Mass Communication was the Special Guest on the “News Point”, a programme organised by the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Osogbo, Osun State on Tuesday where he posited that Nigerian politicians are too greedy and wasteful. He lamented that the current recession in the country was due to negligence on the part of the leaders who failed to plan well for the nation because of their self-aggrandisement. Alao who was a General Manager of defunct Daily Times newspapers said that the time has come for those at the helms of affairs in the country to maximize the natural resources that God blessed Nigeria with, particularly in agriculture. He said a lot of natural resources are wasting away in Nigeria and charged the federal government to ensure that the natural resources are well exploited to boost the nation’s economy. His words “Owing to the crude oil which used to be the mainstay of the economy, we forgot our groundnut pyramid, cocoa and cotton that God has blessed us with. But it’s unfortunate that oil money is no more. We have overslept,” he said. “To get out of the present economic mess which has made life difficult for us, the Federal Government has to be proactive by encouraging everybody to be productive, especially those in the rural areas who have access to land and engage in agriculture. “There are a lot of agricultural produces that must be exploited which can help boost our export profile. It is high time people stop starching money away in foreign accounts but plug it into useful economic ventures,” he added. A 23-year-old, self-acclaimed pastor, Nkechinyere Ndukwe, on Thursday appeared before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing jewellery valued at N10 million. Ndukwe is facing a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, stealing and obtaining under false pretence. When the charge was read out to the accused, she entered a plea of not guilty. The Magistrate, Mrs Helen Omisore, granted Ndukwe bail in the sum of N1 million with two responsible sureties in like sum. The magistrate ordered that one of the sureties must possess land property within the court’s jurisdiction. Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Cousin Adams had told the court that the accused and others now at large committed the offence on March 9, at GRA, Ikeja. He further told the court that Ndukwe had asked the complainant, Ifeoma Isiuwa, to bring all her jewelry valued at N10million for her to commence prayers on behalf of Isiuwa. “When the complainant asked that her jewelry be returned to her, the accused was unable to produce them,” he said. The prosecutor said that rather than return the jewellery to Ndukwe, the accused told her that she had converted them into her own personal use. Adams said that the offences against the accused contravened Sections 285, 312 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. Section 285 prescribes three year jail term while 409 states two years for offenders. The court has adjourned the case till Oct. 17, for mention. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has acknowledged getting reports that banks undermine its policy to sell forex from international remittances to Bureau De Changes (BDCs). Speaking after the 252 Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting in Abuja, Tuesday, the CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, said that the CBN may review the current mechanism if the banks continued to undermine it. As part of measures to arrest the situation, the CBN may allow remittances pass directly through the BDCs, rather than going through banks. Emefiele said: “We have received reports of the BDCs challenges in getting the fund and we are working on ways to improve the flow of the funds to the BDCs. If need be, we would change the existing mechanism to ensure the funds flow to the BDCs.” Recall, in a circular dated July 22, 2016, titled: “Sale of Foreign Currency Proceeds of International Money Transfer Operators,” the CBN said that the BDCs can access forex from international money operators. They were previously not allowed by the CBN to do so. But BDCs had complained that banks had refused to sell FX to them as directed by the CBN, alleging that few banks that agreed to sell to them requested for brokerage fee or tips. “It is regrettable,” Emefiele said. “What we did was to ensure monies from international money transfer agencies will flow through the BDCs from them to people who wants to buy FX from BDCs of not more than $5,000.” He warned that any bank caught demanding for brokerage fee would be dealt with.
