A man, believed to be in his 30s, stripped naked in a broad day light and walked about freely to earn N10,000 at Kabayi, Mararaba, near Abuja. The City News gathered that the drama started when the man, whose identity was not disclosed, decided to prove to his friends that he could do anything for money. The man told his friends that he could walk naked for money but they did not believe him, challenging him to walk his talk for N10,000. A witness said that the man surprisied his friends, pulled off his clothes and walked on the streets naked while people trooped out to watch the ‘absurdity.’ A witness, who pleaded anonymity, told our reporter: “I couldn’t believe it but it is real. I saw people running to have a glimpse while others, maybe scared, stayed away.” The witness, however, said that the man was probably insane while some residents said he may have been influenced by drugs. Our reporter learnt that after the parade, the man was promptly paid the agreed sum of N10,000 by his friends. A pastor, living in the area, who did not want his name in print, described the act as indecent, adding that it was a sign of the end time, urging people to desist from such behaviour and avoid wrath of God. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is meeting today with security agencies over their request for the postponement of Edo State governorship polls scheduled to hold on Saturday. Department of State Security (DSS) and Force Headquarters at a joint press conference in Abuja asked the electoral body to shift the election over security concerns. The security agencies said intelligence reports had unveiled a plan by terrorists to attack vulnerable population. INEC said it would seek to know the depth of threat at today’s meeting with the security agencies before taking a stand. Force spokesman DCP Don Awunah who read the joint statement in Abuja said: “Credible intelligence availed the agencies indicate plans by insurgent/extremist elements to attack vulnerable communities and soft targets with high population during the forthcoming Sallah celebrations between 12th and 13th September, 2016,” adding that Edo State was amongst the states being targetted. He said similar threats were issued during the May Labour Day and Democracy Day celebrations as well as the Ed-el-fitr holidays in July, but that security agencies thwarted the plan. He said while election is important, the security agencies cannot allow the peace of the country to be disrupted. “It is in regard of these that we are appealing to INEC which has the legal duty to regulate elections in the country to consider the need for possible postponement of the date of the election in Edo State in order to enable security agencies deal decisively with the envisaged terrorist threats. Awunah urged the political stakeholders to bear the inconveniences arising from the shift in the election. He also called on members of the public to remain vigilant and to report any unusual movements or actions by groups or individuals in their neighbourhoods. The request came at a time when the INEC, chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu and his commissioners as well as the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Joshak Habila, were meeting in Benin with the 19 candidates contesting in the election. But following the advisory, INEC went into another round of meeting with the stakeholders. Prof. Yakubu, who spoke to journalists after the meeting, said under the circumstances, he would have to meet with the security agencies who gave the advice before taking any decision. “The commission will return to Abuja and take a decision. We need to consult with the security agents to know more of the threat and take a decision thereafter. I assure you that INEC would be jealously guided and protected. It is only the commission that has the power to fix the date for election. I assure you that INEC will protect our democracy,” he said. It’s a false alarm – Makarfi The Senator Ahmed Makarfi”s faction of the PDP said yesterday the security agencies should address the threat rather than postponing election. Spokesman of the faction, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, said “We are taken aback on this advice coming a day after the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, was present at the mega rally of his Party, the APC, in Benin which was concluded without any hitch. “It is on record that INEC recently conducted a ‘hitch free’ Senatorial By-Election in Borno State, which is a high-point of insurgency in the country but, the security agencies saw no reason to call-off the election. “It is, therefore, lamentable to hear from these same security agencies that the election cannot be held in a state where in less than 24 hours, the President and all the APC leaders and members had an uninterrupted rally. “We are calling on the President, Muhammadu Buhari, to caution the security agencies and direct them to provide full security and also to desist from doing anything that will jeopardize this forthcoming gubernatorial election in Edo State. “We are equally counting on INEC not to succumb to this false alarm by acting independently and holding election as scheduled.” We’re watching first – APC Though the National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie Oyegun and the Secretary, Mai Mala Buni could not be reached for comment, a source said contrary to insinuations, the party was not consulted before the police and DSS issued their advisory. “We are also watching the unfolding scenario and would react at the appropriate time. It’s not true that we are afraid of failure,” he said. APC has a hidden agenda – APGA National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA),Chief Victor Oye, faulted the advisory by security agencies, saying there must be a hidden agenda by the ruling APC. “Why should the election be postponed? This shows that they have a hidden agenda because they know APGA is going to win the election.” Nip the threat in the bud-UPP Similarly, a former presidential candidate and current national chairman of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Chief Chekwas Okorie, in a text message said: “the UPP is concerned by this alarm coming from the Nigeria’s major security agencies. If indeed, they have reliable intelligence information about such impending attack, then they must take steps to nip it in the bud, instead of calling for the postponement of a scheduled gubernatorial election in Nigeria.” The candidate of the People Democratic Party, (PDP), Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who spoke during the meeting, urged the commission to say something about the date of the election as declining to give a date raises fears about the credibility of the election. “So I want to advise the commission that as soon as possible the commission should either brief the people on the date this night or tomorrow morning. Also speaking, the APC State Secretary, Chief Osaro Idah, said “APC had no prior knowledge of postponement request otherwise the party would not have held its final rally on Tuesday. “If the election is postpones, it then means we would incurred more expenses, But even if it is necessary to postpone it, it should not be too long,” he said. Don’t postpone the election – Oshiomhole Reacting to the development, the Edo state governor, Adams Oshiomhole, said the APC was “over prepared” for Saturday and urged INEC not to postpone “ the final burial of the PDP.” “The APC is ready for the election this Saturday and that was why we had our mega rally on Tuesday, and after that rally, our people across the state became more committed, more dogged and ready for the election. “ I am already preparing to go to my village to also mobilize my people as other party leaders are doing, that is to let you know that we are not relaxing, despite the fact that we know the PDP is already dead and our people are just getting ready for the burial,” he said. “However, security issues are security issues, and as regards elections they are very critical. If on their own they are calling on INEC for postponement, I am sure they must have their reasons because they are experts in it. If you recall, we raised the alarm that the PDP had planned to import thugs from neighbouring states to help them unleash mayhem on our people because they are not prepared for the election.” State chairman of the PDP, Dan Orbih, blamed Oshiomhole and the APC for the development. He alleged that the governor few days back sponsored some group of boys to demonstrate to the Government House and the secretaries of the APC and the PDP asking for the postponement of the election because they were preparing for the Mathematics paper in the GCE examinations. Before the security issued the advisory, INEC chairman Prof. Yakubu had at a stakeholders meeting in Benin, assured political parties and the electorate that the commission would be fair to all in the September 10 governorship election in Edo State. “For our part, we have warned all our officials to operate strictly within the confine of the law and our guidelines. All election duty personnel have sworn to an oath of neutrality and fairness to the process and any infraction will attract severe sanctions from the commission,” he said. There had also been calls for the postponement of the poll to a later date to allow final year students exercise their rights to vote. A total of 1,742 candidates are expected to sit for Mathematic exams on September 10 which coincided with the day of the election.
