The patriarch of the Ibru dynasty and successful businessman, Olorogun Michael Ibru, died Tuesday at the age of 85, the family said. In a statement by the family, it said the Otota of Agbarha-Otor kingdom died at a medical facility in the United States of America in the early hours of Tuesday, September 6, 2016, following complications from a protracted illness. The husband of former managing director of Oceanic Bank, Cecilia Ibru, died five weeks after his brother, Felix, who died in March this year, was buried. The late Ibru was a successful business man and ran for the governorship of the defunct Bendel State in 1983, which he lost to Samuel Ogbemudia. He attended the famous Igbobi College, Lagos between 1948 and 1951. President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday commiserated with the family. A statement by the presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, said Buhari equally condoled the government and people of Delta State and the Urhobos in particular on the passage of their illustrious son. The statement said the president joined them in mourning “an accomplished businessman whose edifying role in the corporate world and private sector in Nigeria would continue to inspire generations to come.” He urged the bereaved family and all those mourning Ibru to honour his memory by constantly upholding the values of selfless-service, inter-ethnic harmony, knowledge and perseverance, which he passionately promoted through his successful career in the private sector. Similarly, Senate President, Bukola Saraki and his predecessor, Senator David Mark, yesterday extolled the virtues of Michael Ibru. Saraki in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, described the late Ibru as a colossus and trailblazer, who impacted humanity tremendously and positively. Former Senate President, David Mark, in his condolence message, also described the death as a huge loss to the nation. A former Chief Economic Adviser to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, Prof. Ode Ojowu has urged President Muhammadu Buhari-led government to work with the nation’s states and local governments in massive food production as part of measures to overcome the recession facing the country. He gave the advice on Wednesday in Abuja at a one-day Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Media cluster meeting on Buharimeter and the state of the nation organised by the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) and the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA). He said that it is known that food account for over 54 percent of Nigerians household expenditure and that the extensive inequality among Nigerians makes using average assessment untenable. “If we want to talk about recession in this contest, we should rather be calling it hunger and famine and I think there is lack of internal capacity to deal with this challenge. When we had the oil boom we spend and spend without investing and also we refused to save. So there is nothing to fall upon,” Ojowu said. He therefore suggested the creation of free farmers market so that more Nigerians can have access to the farmers to buy their products and thus drastically reduce post-harvest wastages and to also sustain the anti-corruption war among others. While warning against rash and incoherent measures and external advises that can worsen the situation, he recalled the international community’s resolve that selling naira in New York, London and Saudi Arabia was a disaster when one naira was equivalent of one dollar and five cents, but that it is good and realistic for one dollar being openly sold in Nigerian cities at over N240. The President of the National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS) Barrister Kenneth Ukaoha and the Executive Secretary of the Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA) Mr. Sulaiman Arigbabu who also spoke on “The State of the Economy: Challenges and Opportunities” suggested that the local governments should be at the fore front of Agricultural, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and other actions to overcome the recession. They also urged the government to evolve an economic blueprint saying running the 2016 budget without an economic platform is a disservice apart from the obvious fact that the 2016 budget would be run in deficit. The Director of the CDD Idayat Hassan represented by Shamsudeen Yusuf said the meeting was to discuss the current economic crisis and the government policy to effect changes and propose practical strategies for CSOs and the media to engage the government for economic revival.
