Being a movie star and a celebrity, more often than not, gives you the license to get away with many things, most times. But sometimes coming unstuck is just as inevitable as your next meal. This is a lesson Nollywood diva, curvaceous Anita Joseph had to learn the hard way when she found herself stranded and moneyless at one of the airports not too long ago – no thanks to the ATM and its many hiccups. “I never believed I would have to ever beg for money in my entire life but it happened to me this unforgettable and embarrassing day at the airport” she told me, looking uncomfortable, like she was reliving the moment all over again. “Jesus, I was so embarrassed. I was at the airport and needed to use the ATM, because I didn’t have a dime on me. But for some reason the ATM didn’t work and I couldn’t withdraw any money. This is after I had eaten at a restaurant at the airport and needed to pay. I looked around to see if I could spot anyone I know, until my instinct told me I had no choice but to beg. The mere thought of it made me cringe with horror. Me, Nita, to beg? It was inconceivable and unimaginable but it was the only reality staring me in the face or I had to face bigger embarrassment from the restauranteurs,” she recalled coyly. According to her, holding her breath, she approached a guy and to her utter amazement the response she got left her even more breathless.“ You mean you are an actress and you don’t have any money on you and you depend on ATM. Na Wa for una” the guy barked at her. “I was almost in tears and my flight was already boarding. I approached another guy and told him the same story and what he said was another shock to my soul. He asked me who I am and said ‘ are you doing this? I told him I am a Nigerian actress but he replied that he doesn’t watch Nigerian films. To my surprise he gave me the money and behold one of my movies was showing at the lounge, she recounted bitterly. The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF has shot down the Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung’s defence that he knew nothing about the national U-23 team’s trip to Atlanta, USA preparatory for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Dalung and Amaju Pinnick And to prove that the minister was briefed about the trip and re quest put to him to allow the federation take extra members of delegation who will make the team’s work easier, as against his allegation that they it padded the team list, the letter was sent to Sports Vanguard for verification. The letter which was signed by the General Secretary of the NFF, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi was dated May 9, 2016 with Reference Number NFF/OGS/GEN/Vol. XVI/129 and received at the office of the minister on May 10, 2016 duly signed for. The letter also copied to the Permanent Secretary of the ministry has as its heading, “Conveyance of Nigeria’s U-23 Team’s Program ahead of Rio Olympics and Request on Extra Members of Delegation”. Informing the minister that the sports ministry would be responsible for the entire bill of the team’s camping programme and friendly matches in the United Kingdom, the NFF wrote “This is to respectfully convey to the Honourable Minister, the program of the Nigeria U-23 Football Team, also known as Dream Team, with regards to proposed camping in the United Kingdom and the United States of America ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.” It also informed the minister that the organisers of the Invitational Tournament in South Korea told the NFF that they would cater for 20 players and 10 officials during the friendly matches. As a result, the NFF asked the minister to “approve for release by the ministry the attached estimate (about N22.5m and $471,052 for the Ist phase in the UK and N1.7m and $154,603 for the 2nd phase in the USA) for the entire program in the UK and the bill for the extra 10 players and one official in the USA, as head coach (Siasia) intends to make the trip with 30 players and 11 officials. The NFF would however, not confirm if the minister gave the approval after receiving the letter as all calls and messages put across to the president, Amaju Pinnick and General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi were not replied. Meanwhile a member of the team told Sports Vanguard that “I can hit my chest and and say it’s only our football team that had the fewest accompanying officials, we never went with 35 officials. If you can, ask him(the minister) how he appointed for the team a Welfare Officer, who is (President) Buhari’s late brother’s son, whose mother is the CoS to the First Lady by name Modibo.” Another source said because Siasia refused to include one player the minister brought to him in the team because the boys was not good enough, he incurred the wrath of the minister who then went onto deny knowledge of the team’s presence in the USA. However, when the minister heard of the team’s travails in the US he said, “I am hearing the story of our U-23 team camping in the USA for the first time now; we don’t know who took them there and what their mission there is. It’s like when somebody goes to market and have problem, then, he will hold the ministry responsible.” Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/08/u-23-us-trip-denial-nffs-letter-exposes-sports-minister/

The whereabouts of a mother of three, said to have walked out of her Fola Agoro home in Somolu area of the state with one of her sons after leaving a suicide note, was still unknown at press time. She had complained to a relative that her business had gone bad due to the exchange rate and that her debts had risen beyond redemption. Tension has heightened over the disappearance of a mother of three and single parent, Olubunmi Uko. Olubunmi Uko, a businesswoman, reportedly walked out of her home last Friday evening with her last child, identified as Seun. She reportedly woke up her other children and informed them that she was going to visit someone. The older children, Iyiola and Toni, allegedly woke up later to find a suicide note written by their mother. A relative, who simply gave his name as Folu, told Vanguard: “She addressed the suicide note to her children, her mother and to any other person concerned. She said nobody should bother to look for her, that she was going to jump into the river and end it all. “She said she was tired of life. She also said that by the time the letter would be seen, she would have ended inside the belly of a shark. “She had always complained of dwindling business due to high exchange rate. At a point, she complained that she owed people and had no means to pay back. She also said that she borrowed half a million naira to offset the loan, but decided to use it on her business with the hope to realise some gain, but that the money ended up sinking in the business.” Vanguard gathered that prayer sessions are ongoing at different prayer centres for her safe return. Another relative, Mimnimah Uko, who identified the missing woman as her cousin-in-law, wondered why she would allow herself to be overwhelmed by the issues of life to the extent of taking such decision as solution. The relative said: “Our prayer is for God to have mercy by ensuring her safe return and that of her son, Seun. We are imploring Nige-rians to please join us to pray. The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics on Friday withdrew its notice directing members to begin a nationwide strike on August 22. The ASUP Coordinator Zone B, Abdullahi Yalwa, made the disclosure when he briefed newsmen in Lokoja on Friday. Yalwa said the strike was put on hold after the Federal Government opted for dialogue with ASUP to amicably address the demands that led to the issuance of the strike notice. The ASUP zonal coordinator said the next line of action of the union would depend on the outcome of the deliberations between government and the ASUP team. He said, “The strike notice is still in view depending on the agreement reached with the national president of our union, so the ultimatum is hanging. “We have mobilised all our state chapters and they are ready in case of any eventuality.” He expressed regrets that after the nine-month strike aimed at repositioning the vocational and technical education sub-sector in 2013, no significant progress had been made in addressing the issues. He explained that the union was forced to issue the strike notice due to the non-implementation of the NEEDS Assessment Report of 2014, non-payment of salaries in many state-owned institutions and shortfall in personnel allocations. The others were victimisation of union officials, non-release of arrears of promotion, non-release of visitation panel reports, delay in the review of the Polytechnics Act and non-commencement of the renegotiation of the ASUP/FGN agreement of 2010 due since 2013. “We have demonstrated enough patience and must act most appropriately in line with our mandate as a trade union. “If they are not addressed, our members nationwide will be left with no option but to embark on a nationwide strike.” ASUP National President, Mr Usman Dutse, would lead its delegation.
