President Muhammadu Buhari has further shrunk the workload of his deputy, Vice
President Yemi Osinbajo as he announced on Tuesday that the supervision of the National Social Investment Programme hitherto under Osinbajo’s watch has been moved to a new ministry.

The programme, an innovative social programme in which government budgets N500 billion yearly, but never really releases the entire appropriation, had been under the office of the Vice President since it was launched in 2016. A special adviser in the presidency, Maryam Uwais supervises the programme.

The programme utilises information technology to reach and target beneficiaries and has earned plaudits. Last week, Schwab Foundation For Social Entrepreneurship , a sister organization of the World Economic Forum conferred its Public Social Intrapreneur award on Mrs Maryam Uwais.

President Buhari announced today in his 59th Independence Anniversary Speech that it was time to institutionalise it with the creation of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development.

At the moment, the NSIP comes in different shades: Home-grown School Feeding Programme, Government Economic Empowerment Programme, N-Power Job Creation Programme, loans for traders and artisans, Conditional Cash Transfers to the poorest families and social housing scheme.

Buhari promised that the programme will continue to target these vulnerable groups,
including those who may be impacted ‘painfully ‘ by the economic policy directions that may be suggested by the new Economic Advisory Council.

“To institutionalize these impactful programmes, we created the Ministry for Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development which shall consolidate and build on our achievements to date. To the beneficiaries of these programmes, I want to reassure you that our commitment to social inclusion will only increase”, Buhari said in the broadcast.

“However, we are also committed to ensure that the inconvenience associated with any painful policy adjustments, is moderated, such that the poor and the vulnerable, who are most at risk, do not bear the brunt”, he added.

President Buhari appeared to have emasculated the Vice President when he announced the creation of the Economic Advisory Council, to replace the Economic Management Team (EMT) headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

The new body headed by Professor Doyin Salami will report directly to the President.
Other members of the EAC are Dr Mohammed Sagagi (Vice-Chairman), Dr Mohammed Adaya Salisu, Senior Special Assistant to the President, Development Policy (Secretary), Prof. Ode Ojowu, Dr Shehu Yahaya, Dr Iyabo Masha, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, and Mr Bismark Rewane.

Eyebrows were further raised when the membership of the council also excluded the Special Adviser in the Presidency on the economy, Dr Adeyemi Dipeolu.

Wow!

Good one Mr. President. One of the problems we've been having in this country is lack of continuity. New government brings programmes and after their tenure expires the programme terminates. But with this move the NSIP will be added to a ministry and it'd continue even after PMB's tenure for the benefit of Nigerians.

For those calling
@Trader_Moni
vote buying, the Federal government has move it and others to the new ministry for institutionalization. The poorest of the poor, the petty trader, the unemployed, public school children will continue to enjoy the benefit of NSIP.

Osinbajo name will forever be in GOLD, he has done what even presidents refuse to do, he gave the poor and lower class a lifting hand

Thanks to Prof. Yemi Osinbajo

He is not. This is not what you think.

It's about institutionalizing the programmes so that next government will continue with it.

Out of everything the President expressed, some idiots would still be racking head on how to demean the office of the vice president further.
But we must remind ourselves that the presidency is one except for those who want it splitted for nefarious political gains.
Now, it is worth celebrating that the NSIPs have been further institutionalized, to that extent that other upcoming governments can't scrap it again! The vice president would still continue to oversee & monitor it! REJOICE NOT NAYSAYERS!!

Institutionalizing the NSIPs is a great step. It means long after this administration, a plan will be in place to permanently help the beneficiaries with the scheme. The Vice President has started it and successfully been at the hems of affairs. I hope the ministry will continue in this greatness.

Osinbajo will not retire before his time or resign. He is a determined hardworking vice president who will never give up in Nigeria. Others should learn from him and also have this spirit.
