Malam Nuhu Ribadu, Director of Field Operations Directorate, All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, has assured Nigerians of better living condition in the next four years of President Muhammadu Buhari’s leadership. Ribadu, the pioneer Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), gave the assurance at a thank you reception for members of the directorate on Friday in Abuja. “We will continue to be happy in the next four years because we have re-elected a good man. “Buhari is a good man, he is genuine, he is a honest and fair gentlema “He will protect our resources, he will not allow bad people to cheat us and steal from our commonwealth, he will not, and that is what we want in a leader. “He will not go and sell Nigeria, he will not sell whatever that we have, he will not sit with anybody to plot evil or do bad thing, he will not,” Ribadu said. He added that ahead of the Feb. 23, Presidential and National Assembly elections, Buhari refused to allow the traditional way of politicians and did not take advantage of public institutions to achieve his desire. According to him, Buhari refused to interfere with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), but rather charged the directorate to sell APC to Nigerians who have the final say. He added that it was not about money, or intimidation, saying that Nigerian electorate were given free opportunity and chance to decide and they decided through their votes. “Ladies and gentlemen, let us be proud of ourselves, we did something that money cannot buy, we did it honestly and only God can testify to that,” Ribadu said. He urged members of the directorate to be proud of themselves for campaigning for President Buhari and the party’s candidates ahead of the elections, adding that they would be rewarded. He said their reward may not be immediate, but that they would certainly be rewarded. Ribadu, however, said that the general elections were not over, because the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections were still ahead. He, therefore, appealed to members of the directorate to go back and continue to campaign for APC candidates, saying that it was not yet time to rest until it was over. “We have another election coming up on March 9, it is a very important election for the party, I want to appeal to all of us, let us take it as very important. “We have already done a wonderful job and we are capable of doing that again, the work we are doing is a continuation of supporting President Buhari because he would need a party that has majority of states. “He would need more governors so that he can carry on with his work and implement the policies of our party. “The governors would also require our own State House of Assembly members. Governance is about a team work,” Ribadu said. (NAN) https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/buharis-victory-ribadu-assures-nigerians-of-better-life.html

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Uche Secondus, has said that nobody will stop the party from contesting the outcome of the Feb. 23 Presidential Election in the court. Secondus, while addressing a press conference on Friday in Abuja said that the party believed that justice would be done at the court. “We will go to court. Nobody will stop us from going to court and bring out all of the facts both the international observers and some people have not seen. “We will unearth them at the court and I believe that justice will be done at the court “Because, if we continue to suppress injustice and go sentimental, the country will continue to pile on gun powder that will explode one day. “So much injustice has been done in this country and if we allow it and it continues to pile, nobody knows what will happen. “So, that’s why we decided as good citizens and law-abiding and people who believe in rule of law that we will go,” Secondus said. Speaking on the recent meeting the party and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, had with the National Peace Committee, Secondus said there was no condiction given to the party, as they were only invited to state their grievances. “There was no condition. Initially, we were not to talk with them because a decision had been taken to go to court, but because of the personalities involved, we said ok, let’s just talk. “There was no condition. There was no request of any condition. “We made it clear that unless the injustices are addressed, there is no room for peace. It is only when you address the injustice that you can now sit down for peace,” he said. Secondus also spoke on the alleged militarisation of the elections particularly in the South South and South East. He said it was one of the strategies the rulling party used in denying PDP victory. He added the development was also responsible for alleged killing of innocent electorate and suppression of voters who were either scared out or chased away from polling units. He said that even by the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC) own record voter turnout in last Saturday’s election fell to about 36 per cent from 44 per cent it was in 2015. “While the military was suppressing voters in PDP strong hold areas in the South, a different abracadabra was going on in some northern states particularly in Kano, Yobe, Borno and Zamfara states where numbers refuse to add up. “In Borno, Yobe and Zamfara states, confirmed report shows that there was non-compliance in the use of Smart card reader as approved by INEC rules”. He added that “The same applies to cancelled votes, in Nasarawa states over 115,000votes cancelled, Kogi 79,000 votes, Plateau 30,000 votes indicating that these high incidence of vote cancellation were designed to suppress the margin of victory in PDP strongholds. Secondus urged PDP members and supporters across the country not to despair but to remain steadfast and focused. “Like our presidential candidate assured, we shall triumph at the end because democracy has come to stay in this country and is staying by the grace of God. “I also wish to reiterate to our security agencies particularly the Army that they are not at war with any section of her citizens and they must try to be professional in their duties by staying away from election matters as directed by the Supreme Court of the land”. Highlight of the press conference include one minute silence for Nigerians who lost their lives on the election day and in the course of celebrating the outcome. Nigeria has lost over N1.81 trillion ($5 billion) over the years resolving contract disputes that could have been resolved at less cost using alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanism. This was revealed by the President of Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), Prince Adetokunbo Kayode, yesterday, while inaugurating the planning committee for an upcoming government contract dispute resolution workshop in Abuja. Prince Kayode said most of the contract disputes were related to contract cancellations, cost adjustments and delays. He said there was need for contractors and government agencies to explore alternative means of dispute resolution such as that being provided by the ACCI’s Dispute Resolution Centre (DRC) to save cost and time. He said contract disputes dragged for about five to eight years in court and cost huge amount of money for parties involved. The ACCI boss said the DRC, which has been approved by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, has adopted the latest guidelines on global alternative dispute resolution to, not only resolve disputes on time but on reduced cost to all parties. He decried situations were parties in a dispute sought alternative resolution means abroad at high cost. He said the ACCI DRC has the capacity to dispense all contract disputes using alternative dispute resolution mechanism without the parties seeking such solutions abroad. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/nigeria-loses-over-n1-81trn-to-contract-dispute-cases-abuja-chamber.html |

There’s tension at the premises of Lagos Airport Hotel in Ikeja, venue of a “Free Lagos” Press conference about to hold now. The press conference is being organised by a group known as ‘Orange Movement for a Free Lagos State’ with the theme, “Setting Lagos free from Bourdillon Bondage, #OtogeLagos”. The conveners of the group comprise of former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Olisa Agbakoba, Spokesperson of Afenifere Group, Mr. Yinka Odumakin and Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC). While some participants had already seated inside the Oranmiyan Hall where the event was to hold, scores of other participants who stormed the Airport Hotel gate were stopped by a detachment of armed policemen mobilised to the scene. The policemen did not allow anybody to come inside the hall. In the ensuing drama, the policemen fired several shots to disperse the crowd with people running helter-skelter within the premises. It was not clear while policemen in about 10 vehicles stormed the venue, but sources said the action was to prevent the press conference from holding. But the state’s police spokesman, Chike Oti, said the command got an intelligence report that some hoodlums were trying to hijack the press briefing. He said the police cannot stop anybody from using the Airport Hotel facilities being a business environment, adding that the command is also obliged to protect lives and properties of the citizens. As at the time of filing this report, the participants have vacated the hall and are currently hanging around the premises as the drama continues. One of the conveners, Comrade Mark Adebayo said they would sue the police for the siege. Agbakoba, Odumakin and Afikuyomi are yet to arrive the venue. Some youth in their numbers, yesterday, besieged major streets, especially in the Central Business District, Wuse Market, Jabi, Utako in Abuja celebrating President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory at the polls. Brandishing sticks, brooms and cutlasses, the youth also blocked entry and exit points into the city. They formed a human blockade at Masaka on the Abuja-Keffi expressway, impeding traffic flow. Same thing happened at City Gate on Airport Road and AYA-Zuba expressway at Dutsen Alhaji Junction. City News observed that a large number of the celebrating youth, who were mostly minors, swarmed the lane leading into Abuja from Keffi, chanting ‘sai baba’ as they forced motorists to do same. The bonnets and windshields of some motorists’ vehicles that did not chant ‘sai baba’ and did not make the NextLevel gesture by raising four fingers were smashed. The chaos continued down to Mararaba market as they pulled down campaign billboards of opposition candidates and set them ablaze. In some instances, they sat on some vehicles’ bonnets for minutes, dancing and chanting ‘sai baba’ while they brandished brooms, the APC symbol. They also handed motorists brooms as permit and those who refused to collect were harassed and delayed passage. Commercial tricycle and motorcycle riders also joined in the wild celebration, as they drove recklessly, performing stunts on the Airport Road, Obafemi Awolowo Way along Jabi-Berger roundabout, Abuja-Keffi Road and several other locations in the FCT. They rode to places where they had been banned by authorities from accessing as other residents moved about cautiously and in fear. A motorist, John Yahaya, said Buhari’s supporters were free to celebrate but harassing other citizens who were going about their legitimate businesses was not acceptable. He said their action was provocative but thanked God that nobody confronted them as any altercation could result to violence. The FCT police command spokesman, DSP Anjuguri Manzah, could not comment on the chaos in the city as he did not pick calls or reply to a text message sent to his mobile phone number. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/youth-besiege-abuja-block-roads-celebrating-buharis-victory.html

The collation agents of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Tuesday at the National collation centre, openly confronted each other over the usage of the Smart Card Readers (SCR) in the last Saturday’s Presidential election. It all began when the PDP agent and a former Aviation Minister, Osita Chidoka said his party had written a petition to INEC. According to him, the PDP was worried that the promise the INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu made that during the collation of results, the details of accreditation captured by the card reader in the country would be provided. “Yesterday, my colleague raised the issue and we thought that when we come back this morning as we are listening to the states, we will be seeing the accreditation by the states by the card reader. “This, Mr. Chairman, I like it to be on record that we want to see the accreditation for Bauchi state, for Borno state and Yobe in particular and of course, for the rest of the country because the number as we are seeing, it seems to me that we live in two countries. “Why people in the south have issues with the SCR, why complaints were all over the place, we seem to have quiet and peaceful elections in places where the people have complained of severe cases of insecurity and harassment by the military and bandits. “So, we would like you, Mr. Chairman, and I forward this letter to you to say that we will appeal that if it is possible. Mr. Chairman, that before we proceed to the next state, you should please, project to us what the card reader has captured as the accreditation in these states. “We are supposed to read from the card reader, the electronic collation as against the manual information that we are getting to process information here. While it isn’t yet signed into law in your guidelines it was made clear that no voting should take place where there are no card reader. So, Mr. Chairman, we must appeal to you that we would like you to project these accreditation as done by the card reader,” Chidoka said. In his swift reaction, the APC agent, Mr. Festus Keyamo, faulted Mr. Chidoka’s claims. He said the INEC Chairman was empowered to fix guidelines on the conduct at the collation centre. Responding, the INEC boss, Prof. Yakubu, said there is a procedure for submitting correspondence to the Commission. “We haven’t shut down our office. This is the International Conference Centre where we are using as collation centre. Kindly submit your letter to the office, it will be acknowledged. Your letter will now be studied and we will respond, accordingly. I believe that there are details in the letter that we need to study,” Yakubu said. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/just-in-pdp-apc-square-up-at-collation-centre-over-smart-card-readers.html |
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the presidential election result from Katsina State over alleged irregularities. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and an indigene of the state, polled 1,232,133 votes to beat Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, who scored 303,056 votes in the poll. Alhaji Salisu Majigiri, the state PDP Chairman, disclosed the party’s position at a news conference on Tuesday in Katsina. He alleged that there were some election irregularities committed in some local government areas of the state during the poll that were unacceptable to the PDP. “Like in Kankara Local Government Area, some uncustomised result sheets are used to enter results, even though, they are from INEC, but are not the ones specifically supposed to be used for 2019 elections. “In other places, there are over voting which we also observed, we are not satisfied with the result, that is why we rejected it and refused to sign. “We raised objections on these issues during collation, but we are overruled. “We will also raise these issues in Abuja during the final collation,” he said. Gunmen were said to have stormed Maro at about 5:30 am, razing many houses and attacking many of the villagers. A source in Maro said the armed men were more than 400 and that they came to the village very early with different types of weapons. “As I am talking to you, many have fled their homes and are hiding in the bushes,” said one of the villagers who called our correspondent. A former commissioner in Ekiti State, Mrs Funke Owoseeni, narrowly escaped being killed by suspected assassins, on Thursday at her Ijesa Isu, in Ikole local government area of the state. The armed men, who allegedly besieged the former commissioner’s residence with dangerous weapons, however, descended on her husband, Mr Paul Owoseeni, when they could not locate their target. The attackers dealt with Mr. Owoseeni with machete and other dangerous weapons, chopping off five of his fingers in the process. Mrs Owoseeni, who also served as the caretaker chairman of Ikole council and at a time, the women leader of the All Progressives Congress(APC) in the state told journalists on the telephone that the assailants stormed her house at about 8.30pm and turned off the generating set outside, thereby subjecting the house into total blackout. Mrs Owoseeni described the attack as a politically motivated assassination attempt. She said while some students resident with her were about restoring light to the building, the bandits swooped on them and started requesting for where she (Mrs Owoseeni) was at that time. According to her: “When the light went off, we suspected that the generating set was still running outside and we asked those students living with us to go out and check what was happening. “Few minutes later, we heard them saying please save us, save us and my husband who was not with torch light rushed out to see what was happening. The impression we first heard was a case of electrocution. “While my husband rushed out to save the situation, I tried to get my torchlight to be able to see clearly. “Shortly, the voices changed and I started hearing thief, thief, thief but my husband was already in their midst with those children. But because I went with torchlight, I was able to see them and I had to rush back inside and hid myself somewhere. “They brought my husband inside and started asking ‘where is your wife? We are here for her and not you’. When he didn’t tell them where I was, they started macheting him with dangerous weapons and they did that until they chopped off his fingers and they fled when they saw that he had passed out.” Mrs Owoseeni said they immediately took her husband to the General Hospital to stabilize him before he was referred to Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) for intensive medicare. The Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti division, DSP Caleb Ikechukwu, said the case has not been reported at the police headquarters in Ado Ekiti. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/ex-commissioner-escapes-assassination-as-husbands-fingers-got-chopped-off.html

He, however, insisted that the corporation will be sold to Nigerians for the development of the country. “They keep saying ‘Atiku wants to sell NNPC to himself and his friends. Rivers communities drawn from three major ethnic groups of the state such as the Ikwerre, Etche and Orashi region have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to call the Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi to order. The groups in a press briefing addressed by Celestine Omehia for Ikwerre ethnic nationality, Prince Emma Anyanwu for Etche and Professor Keneli Ebeku for Orashi region said the purpose of press briefing was to draw the attention of President Muhammadu Buhari, well-meaning Nigerians and the International Community to current political developments in Rivers State as it affects various ethnic nationalities in the state. Speaking on behalf of the groups, a former Governor of the state, Sir Celestine Omehia said the briefing had become necessary in view of the rising degree of tension, hostility and violence as the rescheduled 2019 general elections approached. He alleged that “the unending atmosphere of hostility been foisted by the unholy relationship between the APC and the security agencies has become a major source of worry, threatening peace and communal tranquility.” “As leaders, our duty is to promote peaceful and free atmosphere before, during and after the polls and warn about possible flash points in the path to the 23rd Feb, 2019 rescheduled elections,” he stated. “On Tuesday, February 12, 2019, the Minister of Transportation and Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, at the Party’s campaign rally in Port Harcourt threatened to deal ruthlessly with the Governor of Rivers State and the entire members of PDP. “The Minister in full public glare accused the opposing political party of committing crimes against him in 2015 and called for revenge in the presence of the President and Commander – In – Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. In a veiled threat, he said it was time to be a man” “Roaring like a warrior, he incited his followers with an Igbo war song used to decimate the lives of people. “As Ikwerre People who understand the import of such a war song , we cannot sit idly and watch the Minister of Transportation cause our people unnecessary harm through his unbridled quest for power” “Ikwerre People are worried that as build up to the 2019 General Elections, some parts of our Ethnic Nationality have become theatres of violence and killings. This recurring decimal may not be unconnected to the political adventurism of the Minister of Transportation who will stop at nothing to ensure that he remains politically relevant,” he stated. He said that the group want to use the forum as the leaders of Ikwerre Ethnic Nationality to call the Minister of Transportation to order. Amaechi had in a press conference in Port Harcourt last year said that he is not a violent person and will not be involved in any act of violence. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/rivers-communities-urge-buhari-to-call-amaechi-to-order.html |
APC national leader Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, yesterday, denied a leaked audio report on campaign funding associated to him, describing it as “fake and desperately illogical and evil.” A statement issued in Lagos by his media aide, Tunde Rahman, said Asiwaju addressed a meeting attended by hundreds of people. The meeting, according to him, was open to the public with the media present and visible. “There can be no leak involved when a statement is publicly made and the media present. This misrepresentation of the audio as a “leak” is again part of a larger attempt to distort a normal speech to rally supporters prior to an election into something nefarious. As bad as this misleading description is, it is the least of the wrongs contained in these counterfeit reports,” the statement said. One of the issues Asiwaju dwelt on in his address, Rahman stated, was the reward system for loyal party members and ardent supporters. ADVERTISEMENT “He told party members that the APC has now devised a plan to compensate them for their hard work after they delivered victory to the party at the polls. “In short, Asiwaju promised the party faithful, APC supporters and members a reward for their efforts to secure victory in the 2019 elections. He had previously stated the goal of getting three million people in Lagos to sufficiently believe in the vision of the APC and to vote for President Buhari and Vice President Osinbajo. This objective was again the crux of his Valentine Day statement,” the statement said. “Asiwaju also said he would not go to Alausa but would use his own funds for the present effort,” he added. He noted that it is common practice to give tokens of gratitude to party members for their work. Shettima attended the meeting together with Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna) and Jibrilla Bindow (Adamawa). Members of the country’s national security council were also in attendance. The threats and challenges are still there but when you put it in proper perspective, I think the president deserves commendation not condemnation. “Be that as it may, uneasy lies the head that wears the crown. I am the chief security officer of the state, I should have the courage and believe me, I am not petrified. “As the chief security officer of the state, the day I say I cannot go to a certain part of the state because of the insecurity, then what sort of confidence are you inspiring on the common man? “The Boko Haram bask in the oxygen of publicity, by attacking my convoy, by targeting my person, they have gotten the much needed boost. But then as they say if you cannot with stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Leadership requires courage. “I will go back to Gamboru Ngala next week and ready to pay the supreme price if need be and I will not be going in a bullet proof car. I will go in a normal car like any other members of my convoy and expose myself to all the risk that they are bearing for me to be protected. “But believe me, no matter how long the night is, darkness must give away to the light of the dawn, no matter how stormy the weather may well be, it won’t rain forever. This madness will come to an end because is fight between light and darkness, it is a fight between cause and justice.” https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/ill-go-back-to-gamboru-ngala-shettima-dares-b-haram.html |

Former President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, on Monday tasked Nigerians to embrace peace and shun violence ahead of the rescheduled general elections. Jonathan, who was in Bayelsa, his home state at the weekend for the polls earlier scheduled for Feb. 16 and March 2 but postponed by one week to Feb. 23 and March 9, called on Nigerians to remain peaceful. Jonathan spoke at a meeting with Niger Delta Youth Leaders on Monday in Yenagoa, where he urged the electorate to shun vote buying, instead vote according to their conscience. “Use of money to induce voters has become very prevalent in Nigeria. “It is more pronounced here than many African countries I have been to monitor elections and it is unhealthy for our development. “My NGO is however, working on advocacy against it. “Politics should be about the people but anyone who wants to make quick money should go into business and quit politics, which is all about service to the people. “People should vote according to the dictates of their conscience and not be induced by money. “I have said it several times that no ambition should be worth spilling of the blood of any Nigerian. “Peace is fundamental to economic development and the reports of insecurity and violence scares away investors. “Anytime someone is killed either by security agencies or by any other exra judicial means, it affects the reputation of the country adversely and that is why peace building is very essential, especially with the youth. “Our youths are critical in our democracy because the future belongs to them, so, my advise is that we should be patient and shun violence in the coming elections,”Jonathan said. Earlier, Mr Kenedy Tonjo-West, a Niger Delta Youth leader, said that representatives of Niger Delta youths from across the region were in Bayelsa to applaud the former President for his efforts at peace building. He said that his exemplary leadership style of politics without violence and bitterness was an inspiration to Niger Delta youths. West, who is also a Senior Special Adviser on Niger Delta Youth matters to the Bayelsa Governor, Seriake Dickson, noted that Jonathan’s influence on the youth of the region was responsible for the prevailing peace in the region. He said that youths from the region were in Bayelsa to seek counsel from the former President following the shift in election date. Mr Peretubo Oweilaemi, President of Ijaw Youth Council, said that youths from the Niger Delta region remained proud of the former President, who relinquished power in the interest of peace and development of Nigeria. “The emphasis of our amiable leader, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, on peace and peace building is very commendable, in spite of his political persuasion, he has chosen to always advocate peace and we the youth are learning from him. “We have seen the region, which is very crucial to the country’s economy grow in peace because you advocate and preach peace all the time since you left office as President,” Oweilaemi said. NAN reports that leaders of Non-Violent Youth groups including: Niger Delta Youths Coalition for Peace and Progress, Ex-Militant Leaders, who embraced the Presidential Amnesty programmes, among others were at the meeting. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/polls-shift-jonathan-sues-for-peace-urges-voters-to-resist-vote-buying.html |
The presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar, has asked an FCT High Court for an order stopping President Muhammadu Buhari and security agencies from alleged interferance with the general elections. Atiku sought the order in a statement of defence he filed against a defamation suit instituted against him by the Buhari Campaign Organization (BCO). In his counter-claim against the suit, Atiku sought an order of court ”mandating President Buhari and his agents including security operatives and officers to abide by the rule of law and the principle of separation of powers entrenched in the constitution and should not intervene in the forthcoming elections.” Atiku, through his counsel, Chukwuma-Machukwu Ume (SAN), challenged the competence of the suit and urged the court to grant an order mandating President Buhari to apologise to him for filing a frivolous suit against him. Atiku who asked for N2 billon as damages, said part of the money should be given to IDP camps across the country and the rest be used in equipping libraries and information technology centres for all state Universities in Nigeria. In a 56-paragraph witness statement on oath deposed by one Abraham Udoh, the former vice president told the court that Buhari had failed Nigerians by his inability as a president to stop the ruthless and wanton killings that rendered citizens, farmers, women and children homeless without food or basic amenities. The case will come up for hearing on March 7. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/atiku-asks-court-to-stop-buhari-security-agencies-from-interfering-with-elections.html |

The PDP has accused APC of sabotaging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) “in a well-orchestrated plot to engineer a staggered presidential election.” The Director Media and Publicity of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, alleged in a statement, yesterday, that President Buhari was determined to have a staggered election which would afford him the opportunity to use security agencies to subvert the will of the people at the polls. The party also said some APC elements in INEC had allegedly hired a team of data hackers who corrupted the voters register with a view to causing mass confusion and voters suppression on election day. “We have been reliably informed that the same Amina Zakari and another high-ranking INEC commissioner played a pivotal role in assisting the APC and Buhari presidency in sabotaging the operations of INEC and scuttling the February 16 elections. “These APC elements in INEC engineered actions that affected the distribution and delivery of INEC sensitive materials to designated locations, thereby frustrating the electoral process. “Nigerians would have been shocked that many registered voters in possession of their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) would arrive at their polling centres on election day, only to discover to their amazement that their names have disappeared from the register in their units. “Intelligence available to us further details how agents of the Buhari presidency infiltrated the distribution system and ensured that sensitive election materials do not arrive at the designated locations, with the view to stall elections in several states and pave way for a staggered election. “This is in addition to deliberate swapping of sensitive election materials between different states and local governments to muddle up the process and stall election in affected areas. In some states like Edo, sensitive election materials did not arrive at their designated points on APC interruption,” he alleged. “The PDP urges Nigerians to continue to be alert in resisting the APC and the Buhari Presidency in their plot to sabotage our elections,” he added. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/pdp-accuses-apc-presidency-of-sabotaging-inec-to-stagger-polls.html |
Retired Group Capt. John Ojikutu, a security expert, has said 60 per cent of INEC staff that superintended the past elections which were equally postponed might still be in the system. “It is high time they were identified and weeded out of the system,” Ojikutu said in his reaction to the postponement of the general elections by INEC. According to him, from 2011, 2015 and 2019, the reasons for rescheduling of elections had always been logistics. He said, “It has always been logistics problems since I can remember way back in 2011 when Jega came on board. Has INEC learnt any lessons from the experiences of the past including the 2015 experiences?” he asked. “There could still be no less than 60% of these in the systems; Who are those that were managing the INEC logistics in the past and how many of them are still in the process? Are there any intelligence about any from the experience of the past? What has INEC done to attend to these experiences? The leftovers in the systems that were part of the experience of the past could still be the clogs in the process; why would INEC not identify them and remove them,” he asked. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/inec-urged-to-weed-out-officials-responsible-for-logistics-problems.html |
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says it is the role of the church to fast and pray for those in government and leadership positions in order to bring God’s plans for the nation to fruition. Osinbajo’s spokesman Laolu Akande, in a statement on Friday in Abuja said that the vice president spoke on Thursday in Jos at a one-day special prayer forum for a peaceful 2019 elections in Plateau and Nigeria in general. The event was organised by the Plateau State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). “The devil cannot interfere in the plans and purposes of God in our lives or in the life of our nation; it is impossible. “There is no way the gates of hell can ever prevail against the church because the church represents God’s plans and purposes on earth. “The role of the church to bring about the plans and purposes of God to pass in our nation is to fast and pray for those that are in government. “God’s plans and purposes for this nation rest on the shoulders of the Children of God. “It is your prayers that will make the difference for our nation. I want to say to you again that please continue to pray and fast for those of us who are in government because we are there as the seeds that God has planted in this nation. “We are the salt; we may not be plenty but salt does not have to be a lot to make a difference,” he said. The Vice President admonished Christians to look inward for solutions to the problems of the nation as looking elsewhere amounted to very big mistake. On his part, Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau State said Osinbajo’s visit to the state for prayers a few days to the elections was a sign of a peaceful outcome. He thanked God for sparing the life of the vice president from the helicopter crash in Kogi recently. Rev. Fr. Polycarp Lubo, Plateau CAN Secretary said that the desire of the association was to have peaceful, free, fair and credible elections. He appreciated Osinbajo for honouring the invitation and prayed God to be with him during and after the elections. The programme featured special prayers for the political leaders in Nigeria and for peaceful elections. There were also praise and worship sessions. Officers and men of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Cross River State have been cautioned against taking food from politicians while on duty on the election day. The state sector commander of the corps, Chidiebere Nkwonta, gave the warning in Calabar yesterday at an election’s stakeholders’ meeting and a capacity building programme for staff. He warned that any officers caught violating electoral laws or colluding with others to tamper with the elections would be dismissed. “We strongly cautioned against personnel of the FRSC against accepting gifts, drinks, food, enticements from anybody or they themselves wasting time to go and eat during election day. “This is to guard against possible compromise or even getting drugged or confused so that you will not be up to discharge their given tasks on election day,” he said. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/dont-accept-food-from-politicians-on-election-day-frsc-officers-warned.html |

President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will today sign a peace accord on the outcome of the February 16 presidential election. Former US President Bill Clinton will also speak with Buhari and Atiku this week to ensure peaceful election, his spokesman Angel Ureña said in a statement. Clinton was earlier billed to deliver keynote address and witness the signing of the peace accord organised by the National Peace Committee (NPC) led by former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar. The former US president however cancelled the trip because his visit to Nigeria “has the potential to be politicized in a way that is not in line with the goals of the Committee,” Ureña said. “This is a crucial time in Nigeria, and President Clinton is hopeful that the election’s outcome reflects the will of the Nigerian people,” the spokesman added. Buhari, Atiku confirm attendance When contacted last night, Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser Media and Publicity to President Buhari, said “You will see him [the president] there.” Mr. Paul Ibe, Atiku’s media aide, also confirmed to Daily Trust yesterday that the former VP would sign the pact today. President Buhari had on December 11, 2018 signed the first peace pact, tagged “Abuja Accord 2018” along with several other presidential candidates. The PDP candidate who was absent at the event however signed the pact the following day. While signing the first pact, Buhari had said, “We, the candidates pledge to uphold the highest standard of conducts and encourage our teeming supporters to do same.” Also, after signing the pact, Atiku commended the president for signing the peace agreement. Daily Trust reports that in the build up to the 2015 elections, the NPC facilitated the signing of the peace accord between then President Goodluck Jonathan, Buhari and 12 other candidates for the presidential poll. ‘Parties should act within the law’ Speaking to the Daily Trust in a phone interview earlier, the convener of the NPC and Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah said the focus of first peace accord was on the conduct of politicians during campaigns, the second would be on acceptance of the poll’s result if the election is free, fair and credible. He added that it was left for the political parties, presidential contestants and other candidates to act within the law and spirit of the National Peace Pact. The PDP had on Wednesday, February 6 threatened to opt out of the first accord after accusing the ruling APC and its members of breaching the terms of the accord, but the APC campaign denied the allegations. 42 parties list 8 conditions for signing accord Daily Trust reports that 42 political parties had on Monday given eight conditions that must be included in the accord before signing it. The position was contained in a statement on behalf of the parties by the Chairman of Action Peoples Party, Imo Ugochinyere; National Chairman of Alliance National Party, Mashood Shittu; National Chairman, People’s Coalition Party, Anthony Harmattan; and National Chairman, Action Alliance, Kenneth Udeze. They are: “The conditions are that it must be included in the accord that security agencies should not arrest leaders of the opposition parties few hours to election, as was done in Osun governorship election. “The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies must not exclude opposition parties’ agents from collation venues, from Polling Unit to the final collation level. “It would be a breach of the accord for any security agency to arrest agents of opposition parties or stop them from accessing the venue of election and collation. “Accreditation must be done with party agents physically monitoring the identification of the voters. “INEC should be allowed by security agencies to do their work without interference in accordance with Electoral Act, 201, as amended. “No result shall leave the polling unit without being announced and pasted on the wall, in accordance with the Electoral Act, as amended. “Politically-motivated police postings should be discontinued and reversed like the case of the posting of the former security aide of (All Progressives Congress chieftain, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Kayode Egbetokun, as Kwara Commissioner of Police.) “INEC must ensure unrestricted access to agents of parties fielding candidates to the situation room and pilot phase of e-collation at all levels of collation up to national headquarters to ensure transparency.” https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/buhari-atiku-sign-accord-on-polls-outcome-today.html

The Muslim Council of Nigeria (MCN) in Taraba State has called on Gov. Darius Ishaku to remove the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Anthony Jellason, over an alleged anti-Islam comment. The acting Chairman of the council, Alhaji Ahmed Bose, who addressed a press conference in Jalingo, said the attention of the council was drawn to an audio recorded by a Hausa musician, Sa’adiya Gombe, who exchanged words with the SSG in which he disparaged Muslims. Alhaji Bose said in the audio, Mr. Jellason allegedly said he hated Islam and Muslims in the state, and so described such comment as “hate speech against the Muslim community.” Bose who is also the state’s Grand Khadi, said the Muslim Council condemned the action of the SSG and called for his immediate removal from his position, as according to him, it would show the Muslim Ummah in the state that his statement did not reflect the position of the state government. “This speech is also contrary to his oath of office as a public office holder as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended,” Bose said. However, effort to get the side the SSG was not successful as he refused to answer calls or reply a text message sent to him by our reporter. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/muslim-council-calls-for-sack-of-taraba-ssg-over-comment.html |

The All Progressives Congress (APC)’s Presidential Campaign Council has denied claims that President Muhammadu Buhari called for violence in Zamfara State. Festus Keyamo, Director of Strategic Communications, APC Presidential Campaign Council made this denial in a statement on Tuesday. “The candidate of the main opposition himself…threw caution to the wind in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State on Monday, February 11, 2019, when he alleged that President Muhammadu Buhari called for violence when he campaigned in Zamfara State. “Nothing can be farther from the truth. The Hausa word the President used in Zamfara, which has been taken out of context, is “fitna”. Incidentally, all our Hausa language scholars have said the word means different things: it means distress, trial, affliction or temptation. It can also be used to describe rebellion or uprising. “In this case, President Buhari was actually weighing in on the joke told very often of recent in the North that due to the rice boom, farmers have embarked on pilgrimage and the marrying of more wives. “So, what the President meant was actually a joke deliberately taken out of context: he simply told the crowd to ensure they eat very well because of the rice boom before they can contemplate giving in to those temptations.” He urge Atiku not to set the country ablaze by outright falsehood. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/atiku-lied-buhari-didnt-call-for-violence-in-zamfara-apc.html |
As his home state, President Buhari has slated Katsina as last port of call for the APC presidential campaign, while his main rival, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, who was in Katsina a few days ago, reminded the electorate of his long ties with the Yar’adua family, saying this was the time for them to appreciate his loyalty by dumping their son in his favour. Katsina is ranked fourth in voter population in the country, with 3,251,927 registered voters. Besides, the electorate has the huge task of ensuring that President Buhari wins convincingly, and Gov. Aminu Bello Masari has never minced words in telling the world that he and his people would fulfil this obligation. At present, the state has set a target of three million votes in its new drive to address shortfalls envisaged from other North West states where the PDP may likely get some votes during the presidential election because of the internal crises bedevilling the APC. During the 2015 elections, Buhari got 1,348,441 votes in Katsina ahead of PDP’s 98,937 when ex-President Goodluck Jonathan was the flag bearer. That time, the PDP was the ruling party at the centre and in Katsina, and for obvious reasons, including the need for the state to remain under the fold of the party, the then Governor, Ibrahim Shehu Shema, and other PDP loyalists campaigned vigorously against the APC and its candidates. And even though they could not get the winning votes, the PDP recorded a wonderful outing. This time around, the APC is at the centre and visibly in control in Katsina, hence setting the ambitious target of securing three million votes for Buhari. Daily Trust reports that APC leaders are working round the clock to ensure they deliver this onerous task. So far, 3,018,963 persons have collected their PVCs, which translates to 93 per cent compliance, according to INEC. Only 232,964, seven per cent, PVCs are yet to be collected and there are indications that the few days extension granted by INEC would be used by those who are yet to collect their cards to do so. Analysts believe that although President Buhari will carry the day in Katsina, PDP’s Atiku will also have several boxes to go home with. They are quick to cite his affiliation to the Yar’adua family, one of the enduring dynasties highly cherished across the state. Atiku and late Shehu Musa ‘Yar’adua, the elder brother of late President Umaru Musa Yar’adua, had a close tie dating back to the 1960s. Atiku does not keep this relationship secret as he showcases it whenever the opportunity avails itself. He is good at referring himself as a political protégé of late the late Shehu Musa Yar’adua. During his presidential campaign rally in Katsina, he pleaded with the voters to consider the relationship and vote for him. Besides, ethnicity and religion which gave Buhari an edge during the 2015 election have vanished, especially in the core North, including Katsina, hence the projection that since the two leading candidates are Muslims and of Fulani extraction, some voters will consider other variables before deciding who to support. Similarly, there is the likelihood of voter shortfall of from seven: Jibia, Safana, Batsari, Danmusa, Kankara, Faskari and Sabuwa, out of the 34 local government areas of the state that have security challenges, including occasional kidnapping. A voter apathy is expected giving the insecurity bedevilling the areas, a situation which even INEC is pondering about. The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Ibrahim Zarewa, said, “The issue of insecurity in some parts of the state has escalated recently, largely as a result of spillover of the happenings in neighbouring Kaduna and Zamfara states. “Election requires a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere. A concrete approach has therefore become necessary in order to ensure peaceful and hitch free elections.” Aside this, other determinants have to do with what the president has been able to bring home, especially in terms of infrastructural development. There are mixed reactions with some believing that Buhari has not done much, even as many others believe in the Hausa axiom, “Naka sai naka”, meaning “You can’t disown yours for another.” Some of the federal projects in Katsina State include effort towards completion of Zobe and Sabke dams, the proposed refinery and transport university (yet to commence), establishment of military bases, ongoing work on the Kano-Katsina Expressway, partial completion of a wind mill project, among many. Recently, the state APC Chairman, Shitu Shitu, admitted that APC in Katsina had a lot to do, especially towards ensuring its sound victory in the state and the North West in general. Shitu said, “Zamfara has no candidates. We lost Sokoto to PDP, and in Kano, there is the Kwankwaso issue. These North West states together gave the president a total of 7.4m votes. He won with 15.6m votes; which shows the strength of the zone,” he said. “Of all the seven North West states, only Katsina and Jigawa are free from political crises, and Katsina is the only acknowledged to be solely APC, as such, we must work towards mass mobilisation of people to free us of impending shame or not reaching our target,” he added However, Gov. Aminu Masari said against all odds, the chances of APC winning the elections in Katsina were very bright given the influx of defectors into the party ahead of the polls. Gov. Masari said about 90 per cent of those who mattered in the PDP had since crossed over to the APC. He added that the greatest pleasure was that the APC had delivered in all sectors of human endeavour. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/katsina-buhari-upbeat-atiku-counting-on-yaradua-connection.html |
