Politics › Dankwambo Not Nominated PDP Presidential Candidate - Secondus by agwom(op): 6:31am On Mar 13, 2018
The National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Prince Uche Secondus, said yesterday that the purported nomination of Gombe State Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo, as the presidential candidate of the party was not true.

Secondus made this known while briefing newsmen in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital after a rally of the party.

He said even though he was not in attendance at the Gombe meeting, no such decision was taken by PDP governors and other party leaders in attendance.

On why himself and Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike did not attend the Gombe meeting where the alleged endorsement was sealed, Secondus said he was indisposed and that it was not only the Rivers governor that was absent.

There were suggestions that some PDP governors were rooting for Dankwambo as their preferred presidential candidate.

“Though I was not in Gombe meeting, it was false, don’t listen to APC false propaganda. There was no such nomination. I was not in attendance because I went for medicals, I am a human being; most governors were absent not only my governor,” he said.

Politics › Nigeria Is Marching Towards A New Dawn In Science – Minister by agwom(op): 11:44am On Mar 09, 2018
The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, has said there are signs that Nigeria is already onward march towards a new dawn in science.

Dr Ogbonnaya Onu stated this at the ongoing 2018 Technology and Innovation Expo taking place in Abuja.

According to the minister, the number of patents granted to innovators and inventors in the country had risen to 50 by 2017 ending, indicating that number of innovations and inventions were on the rise.

“Already, there are signs that we are on the onward march toward a new dawn. In 2015, there were only 6 patents for research findings in our country which were processed through the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion, NOTAP. Barely a year later in 2016, the number increased to 16. By the end of last year, 2017, it rose significantly to 50.

“This is a clear evidence of a remarkable improvement in the level of innovation in Nigeria,”he said.

He said science and technology could bind Nigerians together in the common pursuit of creating more jobs, reating wealth, reducing poverty, strengthening the naira and reawaken Nigerians’ sense of pride.

“Nigeria can surpass the achievements of the advanced nations of the world [with science]. What we are doing today, shows clearly that we have the human resource that will help us achieve this,” Dr Onu said.

Crime › Curfew As Mambilla Violence Spreads by agwom(op): 6:22am On Mar 08, 2018
Curfew has been declared in parts of Taraba State where fresh violence broke out between Mambilla militia and Fulani youth.

The situation deteriorated barely 24 hours after President Muhammadu Buhari visited the state.

The president had met political and traditional leaders on the need to end the circle of violence and maintain the peace in the state.

The state government declared the curfew in Mayo Ndaga in Sardauna Local Government Area of the state.

A security meeting was also held in Gembu chaired by commandant 20 Battalion Serti with police zonal commander, Chief of Mambilla and Fulani leaders in attendance.

It was gathered that during the meeting riot act was read with a warning that security personnel sent to all parts of Mambilla were combat ready and would restore peace and order and troublemakers would be dealt with.

In Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, Governor Darius Ishaku also chaired a security meeting with police commissioner, Mr. David Akinremi, Director of state security service and the heads of all security agencies in the state.

The senior special Assistant on media affairs to Governor Darius, Mr Bala Dan Abu, confirmed the meeting held but there was no statement issued on the meeting.

The Police Public Relation Officer Taraba State command, ASP David MiSal, did not answer calls made to his phone by our reporter but replied a text message saying “there is calm in the area now”

Crisis erupted in the area last Wednesday following attacks on Fulani communities in Yarimaru area by suspected militia which later spread to other parts of the Mambilla plateau.

The curfew was slammed on the area as more towns and villages came under attacks in the troubled Sardauna Local Government Area.

Daily Trust gathered that Mambilla militia and Fulani youths engaged themselves in bloody fight leading to more killings and burning of houses.

The attacks are said to have spread to parts of Mayo Ndaga, Yarimaru,Kakara and Sherif up to towns on the Nigeria Cameroun border.

‘29 corpses recovered’

The chairman of the local government, Mr. Godwin Sol, told our reporter in a Telephone interview that as at Yesterday 29 corpses were recovered while search for many missing persons continued.

He said many people were wounded and several houses burnt at Yelwa, Tunga,Maisamari and other places.

Holiday seekers avoid Mambilla

Meanwhile, tourists and holiday seekers from within and outside the country no stayed away from the Mambilla plateau because of insecurity, sources in the area told Daily Trust.

Findings revealed that the number of tourists and holiday makers visiting the area once regarded as tourists haven has dropped drastically.

Most hotels in Gembu, the headquarters of Sardauna, local government which used to received hundreds of guests on weekends, are now facing low patronage.

The manager of Daula Hotel, a popular lodge in Gembu, Malam Haruna, said since the crisis began in June last year hospitality business in the area started experiencing low patronage.

He said previously most hotels in the town were always booked especially during weekends and public holidays but now the story was different. Similarly business activities have also slowed down as people avoid coming to the area.

Our findings also revealed that a number of business men and wealthy individuals have relocated to Serti in Gashaka local government area as well as Jalingo, the state capital. Some even crossed the border into Cameroun Republic.

A resident of Gembu, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa, told Daily Trust that Mambilla Plateau was a dream destination for most Nigerians but because of crisis nobody wants to visit the area again.

He challenged stake holders to encourage their people to live in peace with one another otherwise people would avoid the area completely.

Politics › You Made Yourself A Laughing Stock By Promising To Fight Corruption In Ghana, Be by agwom(op): 5:37pm On Mar 07, 2018
Ben Murray-Bruce, senator representing Bayelsa east constituency, says President Muhammadu Buhari made himself a laughing stock by promising to fight corruption in another nation, while the social vice is increasing in Nigeria.

Buhari, who was in Ghana on Tuesday to mark the country’s 61st independence anniversary, was quoted to have said he would help the west-African country fight corruption.

‘‘Your Excellency can be assured that you have a good partner in me as I look forward to any form of collaboration between Nigeria and Ghana in tackling the menace of endemic corruption,” Buhari reportedly told President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana.

Reacting to Buhari’s promise, Bruce made reference to Transparency International’s report that corruption is getting worse in Nigeria.

In a tweet, Bruce told Buhari that charity begins at home, while urging him to lead by example by fighting corruption, “not opposition”.

“Rather than promise to help Ghana fight corruption, show by example that you are fighting corruption, and not opposition in Nigeria,” Bruce said.

“If corruption is increasing in your nation, you make yourself a laughing stock if you promise to fight it in another nation. Charity begins at home.” “The major challenge facing President Buhari’s anti-corruption war is that for almost three years, it has been delivering activity instead of delivering results.

“They have been making noise instead of making news. They‘ve been practising propaganda instead of setting proper agenda.”

Politics › Vote Of No Confidence On Fayemi Not Personal – Gbajabiamila by agwom(op): 3:11am On Mar 07, 2018
The Leader of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, yesterday, said the motion he moved on the floor of the House which led to the declaration of vote of no confidence on the Minister of Mines and Steel, Kayode Fayemi and the minister of state in the ministry, Bawa Bwari, was not a personal attack.

Gbajabiamila stated this while speaking with select journalist in Lagos.

In a recent motion by Gbajabiamila, members of the Green Chambers passed a vote of no confidence on Fayemi and Bwari. They also resolved to set up a “powerful investigative ad-hoc committee” to unravel all the surrounding issues in the Ajaokuta steel company.

“Before you bring people directly into plenary, it must be of utmost public importance. We thought the issue required that kind of importance; the speaker personally wrote the minister to give 10 days prior notice. It was only a day before the hearing that the minister caused the ministry to respond, to say he will not be coming.

“The speaker responded again urging him to make time; it was not until the hearing had commenced that the minister dispatched a hurriedly written letter and the thrust was that they are going on with the concession,” he said.

He said the legislators were justified to be furious at the absence of the minister, especially considering that nobody showed up from the ministry which “communicated disrespect for the parliament.”

According to him, “They also instructed the sole administrator of Ajaokuta not to show up; everybody smelled a rat. There was propriety to cover something; it was unfortunate that Dr. Kayode put us in that situation. We saw the mood of the house and we were not going to put our neck on the chopping block,” he said.
