A 28-year-old trader, Kemi Shopade, who allegedly assaulted two Ikeja Electric workers that wanted to disconnect her electricity wire, on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos. Shopade, resident of Alaguntan, Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos, is being tried for conspiracy and assault. The Prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Awase, said that the accused committed the offences on Nov. 24, at her residence. Awase said that the accused and two others, who had yet to be apprehended, assaulted two workers of Ikeja Electric — Mr John Oluwole and Mr Uwaoman Ibiam. “The accused beat up and bit the complainants while performing their duty,” he said. He said that the complainants disconnected the electricity supply of the accused over unpaid electricity bills from January. “The accused, who had not paid for electricity since the beginning of the year, descended on the complainants when they disconnected her power supply. “The two other men who are still at large joined her in beating the complainants, and in the process, the accused bit the complainants. “The case was reported to the police and the accused was arrested,” the prosecutor said. The offences contravened Sections 174 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised). The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 174 prescribes three years jail term for a person guilty of assault. The accused, however, pleaded innocence of the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N20,000 with two sureties in like sum. The Magistrate, Mr J.A. Adigun, said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government. He adjourned the case until Jan. 5, for mention. The Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) is keeping over N50 billion outside the Treasury Single Account (TSA), a parliamentary panel said yesterday. The amount is stuck in different commercial bank accounts by the corporation, the panel constituted by the House of Representatives to probe the status of TSA said. Chaired by Abubakar Nuhu Danburam (APC, Kano), the panel said the over N50bn is part of proceeds from joint venture contracts (JVC). At a session yesterday in Abuja, the panel said NNPC claimed the amount was exempted from being transferred to the TSA, following an approval by President Muhammadu Buhari. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has confirmed NNPC’s claim, saying a letter issued by the Chief of Staff (CoS) to the president, Abba Kyari conveyed the directive. Mr Dipo Fatokun, who represented CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, told the lawmakers that the TSA has yet to achieve 100 per cent compliance, saying part of the N50bn may have been withheld by some banks due to the outcome of litigation involving the NNPC. But the lawmakers doubted the claims, saying there must be a separate approval given by the president since the purported letter from the CoS was not categorical. The Group Managing Director (GMD) of NNPC, Maikanti Baru, was not present to respond to issues raised by members of the panel. Consequently, the lawmakers summoned him to appear “unfailingly” on Wednesday, next week. He is to appear alongside some banks chief executive officers. Danburam and his colleagues also resolved that NNPC must produce evidence of presidential approval for the exemption of the accounts within 48 hours. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/nnpc-keeps-n50bn-away-from-tsa-reps-panel.html

Brent crude oil prices jumped above $65 per barrel after the shutdown of the Forties North Sea pipeline knocked out significant supplies from a market that was already tightening due to OPEC-led production cuts. Brent crude futures on Tuesday, the international benchmark for oil prices, were at $65.07 dollars a barrel at 0211 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were at 58.21 dollars a barrel. Britain’s Forties oil pipeline, the country’s largest at a capacity of 450,000 barrels per day (bpd), shut down on Monday after cracks were revealed. “The market reaction shows that in a tight market, any supply issue will quickly be reflected in higher prices,” said ANZ bank. The jump in Brent prices widened its premium to WTI prices, making U.S. oil exports more attractive. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/oil-price-jumps-above-65.html

The National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Alhaji Abdulkadir Balarabe Musa, yesterday, blasted the All Progressives Congress (APC) saying the party rode to power on false and empty promises. The former governor of Kaduna State, who spoke on the state of the nation at the 54th meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the PRP, said in his opening remarks that the ruling APC which was enmeshed in internal crisis, offered Nigerians nothing in the last three years other than hardship. He said none of the promises made by APC before coming to power in 2015 has been fulfilled, noting that hardship had overwhelmed the masses. He said the economy has remained comatose, unemployment has assumed critical proportion, while insecurity among other issues have become life threatening and worrisome. The former governor said his party would remedy the situation if voted into power in 2019. “This APC administration, which rode to power on the back of false promises to this generation of hapless young men and women, seems to have no answers to this ticking time bomb beyond slogans such as N-Power. “In fact, instead of creating jobs, the administration is busy cutting existing ones in the name of rightsizing or downsizing. “This government, both at the centre and in the states that it controls, has proved that it has little or nothing else to provide Nigerians other than further mass impoverishment, frustration and hardships,” he said. Balarabe Musa said the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government had not done better even in the area of security. “In the almost three years that the APC has been in power, the reality has been otherwise. Yes, the Boko Haram camps in the Sambisa forest may have been wiped out, but the security menace that the group poses continues to manifest, with suicide bombs exploding almost on weekly basis, particularly in the north eastern part of the country,” he said. He also berated the APC for lacking in internal cohesion, saying even in the fight against corruption, the government had been consistently assaulting due process and the rule of law. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/apc-offered-nothing-so-far-balarabe-musa.html

From Usman A. Bello, Benin In one month, the Edo State Government has received 1,100 indigenes who were deported from Libya. They left the state for Europe through Libya in search of greener pasture. Many of them died on the way, many others were sold as slaves, while many who were held in Libyan prisons were severely tortured. Some of the returnees in Benin spoke to Daily Trust on Sunday about their harrowing experiences. I was sold for N300,000 - Harrison Okotie (35) A friend of mine sold the idea of travelling to Europe to me and my sister, who we travelled together with, assisted me with some money. We paid the traffickers N600, 000 each to take us to Libya. When we got to Libya, we were arrested and sold to Arabs at N300,000 each. I never knew I was being sold because they would tell you that, they were taking you to cross over to Italy. It is only when you reach their destination that you would know that you were sold as slave. From that moment, you would be under his rules and regulations until you are able to pay double the amount he claimed to have paid for your freedom. I was tortured daily, they even stabbed me on my back for not being able to pay a ransom. They will tell you to control your family at home to bring money, but if the money was not forthcoming you would face severe torture. A Nigerian was shot in the presence of our ambassador for attempting to join the queue to register for deportation. Four people died in my presence due to torture. Our suffering in the hands of the Arab increased when we started telling the United Nations that we wanted to go home. The Arabs would always ask us to tell the UN that we needed food and clothes but we would tell them that we wanted to go home due to the way and manner we were being tortured. By the time the UN personnel leave, it would be 24 hours torture and we would be denied the loaf of bread we were given each. Even if I am given the opportunity again, I will never go to any Arab country. I left my wife and two children here in search of a greener pasture only to face torture. I was shot for attempting to register for deportation - Amos Oghogho (25) I left Benin on June 24 this year and within a week I was in Libya. While there, I was working in a car wash in Saba city. My suffering started when I had to leave for Subuata town because of too many kidnappings and slavery. As soon as I got to Subuata, war broke out between militants. As I was going to work, the police arrested me and took me to prison. Nigerians at the prison were more than 1,000, and because of the number, we were moved to a prison in the desert. There they used to drug our food because as soon as you eat that food, you go to sleep immediately. For the three months I stayed in prison I never had a bath. They were using us to trade because as soon as they release you after paying ransom, another group would arrest you and the torture continued. All the months I spent in prison, it was only macaroni they fed us and it was once a day. I was shot while trying to register to be deported back to Nigeria. When I wanted to join the queue, the police asked me to go back, but as I was explaining to him my intention, another one shot me on the hand. They later took me to a hospital where they performed surgery on the hand. I can never advise anybody to go to Libya. I saw my twin brother shot dead for not being able to pay ransom - Abel Osifo Christopher (36) My destination was Italy and not Libya but I was not able to cross before we were bundled into prison. The journey cost me N680,000. I sold my car to raise the money and move on June 13, this year. My experience in Libya was disastrous and painful: life there was full of agony and sorrow and to worsen it, I lost my twin brother there. They shot him because we could not pay the ransom on time. When they kidnapped us, they asked us to pay 5000 dinar (N500, 000). However, before we could raise the money from Nigeria, they shot and killed him. Many Nigerians died in Libya. I regretted going to Libya and can’t even advise anybody to go. I regret going to Libya - Abieyuwe Igue (24) I left Nigeria last year not knowing that I was pregnant. I spent one year four months and my baby is 10 months old now. My intention was to go to Europe through Libya but I was not able to cross before we were caught. I paid N400,000 to get to Libya. I was a stylist here but decided to go to Europe for a greener pasture. I was beaten severally for no just cause, but never sexually assaulted. I will never go to Libya again because it is too risky and I regret going there. I’m happy to be home Josphine - Ajagbor (33) I left with my son of three years to Libya in June this year. When they arrested us they took us to prison and we were living on macaroni and bread daily. The food was cooked without salt and pepper and we only ate twice a day. My son had to get used to the suffering too. I was a caterer before I left Nigeria. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/-i-was-sold-for-n300-000-after-paying-n600-000-to-get-to-libya.html cc Farano cc Rocktation

The outgoing National Caretaker Committee Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sen. Ahemed Markafi has appealed to the incoming leadership of the party to ensure that PDP’s doors remain wide open for both returnees and new members. Makarfi made the call while welcoming delegates at the PDP National Convention held on Saturday in Abuja. He said this was imperative to ensure that they were not disadvantaged in any way, “just as it is also imperative that the loyalty, sacrifices, commitment and dedication of those who stuck with the party through thick and thin were not denigrated in any way. “A level playing field must be availed all members so that we avoid a situation in which we create many other problems while trying to solve one. “In words and actions, we must continuously assure and reassure members that loyalty to the party does, indeed pay and is rewarded,” he said. . Makarfi said that inspite of all the challenges encountered by his led Committee, they were able to record some achievements. Some of the challenges according to him, include litigation and inadequate finance as all but one of the bank accounts inherited by the committee was garnished by various court judgements. “The only bank account we have had access to these past 18 months is one that had less than two million naira.” He said that inspite of all constraints, the committee was able to lay a good foundation for the re positioning the PDP, turning it into the beautiful bride coveted by all discerning politicians. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/pdp-s-doors-open-for-returnees-new-members--makarfi.html |
