Former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday said he did not oblige his family’s move to secure his freedom from prison when he was jailed for an alleged coup plot because he didn’t want to be free while late General Shehu Musa Ya’adua was still in jail. He spoke at the 20th memorial lecture organized by the Shehu Musa Yar’adua Foundation in memory of the late General Shehu Musa Yar’adua. Obasanjo said: “The life of the late Tafida Katsina, Shehu Musa Yar’adua typifies the answer to the question of and eloquent and reliable person who died 20 years ago and we are witnessing this gathering in his honour. In the last 20 years, I kept saying that I always remembered him as the best deputy I ever had when I was a military Head of State. Some of his friends and associates have remained loyal to his ideals since his departure. We had many good and sad periods together.” The President of Sierra Leone, Mr. Ernest Koroma, said Yar’adua fought for the unity of the country and put the interest of Nigeria before his. “His forgiveness and faithfulness endeared him to many as he was always smiling. I call on the younger generation to always emulate his good deeds which makes him fresh in the minds of many people,” Koroma said. The Emir of Katsina who was represented by the Kaigaman Katsina, Alhaji Kabir Mashi, said the late General Yar’adua was a man of exemplary character who always tried to take the country to greater heights and he didn’t have a dull moment. He prayed for his soul to rest in perfect peace. A former military governor of Oyo State and later Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Kaduna, retired Major General Paul Tarfa said, “Yar’adua was a very smooth gentleman, he knew how to choose, develop and achieve goals with his team. Above all, he made friends in all parts of the country and beyond and that is where he surpassed me.” Many friends at the event eulogised him for being a bridge-builder. The event was graced by many dignitaries including Alhaji Umaru Mutallab, retired General Aliyu Gusau, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, Chief Tor Sankare I from Benue State, Risqua Murtala Ramat Muhammad, Hajiya Titi Atiku Abubakar and many members of the Yar’adua family. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/i-stayed-longer-in-jail-for-yar-adua-s-sake-obasanjo.html |

Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, yesterday, adopted President Muhammadu Buhari as their candidate for the 2019 general elections. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said this in a statement. He said the party leaders also expressed their support for Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje as their sole governorship candidate for 2019. He however noted that Buhari neither said he accepted nor declined the endorsement in his speech even after the party leaders had promised to procure the nomination forms for him and threatened to sue if he declined the said endorsement. Shehu said President Buhari only smiled and went on to underscore the need for unity in the party and among the diverse people of Nigeria. The APC stakeholders meeting, held on the sidelines of the president’s state visit to Kano, was attended by Governor Ganduje, his deputy, Professor Hafizu Abubakar, the state chairman and the members of the state and national executive committees of the party from Kano State. Also in attendance were two of the state’s senators; members of the House of Representatives from the state; the speaker and 34 of the 40 members of the State House of Assembly and the 44 party chairmen, their deputies and local government area secretaries of the party. Others were Governor Muhammed Badaru Abubakar of Jigawa State and other leaders of the party in the state. The State Chairman of the APC, Alhaji Inuwa Abbas, hinged their endorsement of the president on his achievements in the last two years especially in the fields of security, the war against corruption and the restructuring of the economy. “Security is important for everyone, not just for Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states. It is even more so for us as a commercial and industrial state. We are convinced that you are best for these times when the country has begun to muster energy and resources to develop agriculture, infrastructure and empower the younger citizens,” Abbas said. Speaking on a humorous note, Governor Ganduje said the party was prepared to drag the president to court to force his acceptance of the second term ticket. In his response, President Buhari said he understood the clamour by the ordinary people on the streets who raised four fingers on each hand, “meaning four-plus-four”. He, however, stressed the need to sanitize party politics by ridding it of vote buying and violence. “What I saw in the elections in Kogi, Bayelsa and Rivers; the use of money and those headless bodies really upset me. I don’t wish to see that anywhere. I would not have won if money and killing was the modus of operation. That is my view of politics,” Buhari said. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/kano-apc-to-buy-forms-for-buhari-s-second-term.html

These Bible study recommendations for young adults are for Bible study on a personal, individual level, not for a group. I have two reasons for choosing this level, the personal, individual level. The first is that I noticed that there is so much literature already on Bible study on a group level, either in Sunday school or in catechism classes or in other formal and informal groups, but there is so little on the personal, individual level. My second reason is that in my opinion there are more benefits to be derived from a Bible study on an individual level than on a group level. Very many who attend a group Bible study do not really develop their Christian life. They just go and grow with the group. At least this has been my personal experience, both in participating and in leading Bible study groups. My Experience of Bible Study I began to read and study the Bible on my own (without any human teacher or parent telling me to do it) when I was 8 years old but it was only when I was 49 years old that I got the full benefit of studying the Bible. I am now 65 years old. If somebody guided me correctly when I was a young adult of 20 to 40 years old on how to study the Bible maybe I would have gotten this full benefit from studying the Scriptures earlier and I would have more years of enjoying this benefit. As it happened I have enjoyed this benefit for 16 years only as of now, instead of a possible 45 years, missing some 29 years when I could have enjoyed the full benefit of studying God's written Word. When I was 26 years old I enrolled in a subject on studying the Bible. But this was for preaching purposes. It was basically a course on how to get to the real meaning of a Biblical passage in order to share this with the church members by preaching. I learned a lot in this course but it did not give me the full benefit of Bible study. It was only 23 years later that I got the full benefit. It is my hope and fervent desire that young adults who read these recommendations and do them will get the full benefit of Bible study while they are still young and strong and thus enjoy this full benefit many, many years before they leave physically this planet Earth. It is understood and presumed that they do have the motivation to study the Bible on their own. After knowing through this article what this full benefit of Bible study is they may be encouraged to study the Bible on their own and not depend on a group leader or pastor or priest or catechist to teach them about the Word of God. One: Get a Good Translation of the Bible In the English language the translation that I recommend is the so-called King James or Authorized version. I am a Catholic and yet I recommend this translation for personal study of the Bible. I know some of the words there are foreign to a present day reader. They are called archaic words which belong to the English language in the 16th century but are no longer used now. But there are copies of this version where at the back of the Bible there is a Bible word list where these words are given equivalents in our time. Get a copy of such a King James version Bible. Many groups of Christians are giving out this copy free. Avail of one. The reason why I recommend this translation of the Bible is because it is the one I consider done by the translators with the utmost reverence and so the unction of the Spirit can be felt most from this translation than from other translations. In my opinion it is the version that is most congenial for praying. And it has produced more holy men and women than any of the other translations. From the point of scholarship and readability there are other better translations. The New International Version Bible may be better from the point of scholarship. The New Living Bible is far better from the point of view of readability. But from the perspective of a genuine, reverential, loving study of the Bible, I recommend the King James version. It is only a recommendation. You can use another version if you want. Two: Have a Conversational Mode of Relationship with the Holy Spirit As you begin to set yourself to study the Bible have a conversational mode of relationship with the Holy Spirit. Look up to him as your teacher, for he is indeed the best teacher of the Scriptures. After all he was the one who wrote them. Thank him for writing these and ask him to help you understand their content. Anytime that you think you need to know about the meaning of a passage, ask him first. He will be the one to direct you to a Bible dictionary or a commentary if needed. Be attentive to him always as you set about to study the Bible. http://christianlifeministry..com.ng/2017/12/bible-study-recommendations-for-young.html |
