Politics / Independence And ‘23 General Elections: The Advancement Of Yoruba Nation by AhlexOfficial(m): 12:51pm On Oct 01, 2022
PRESS RELEASE:

INDEPENDENCE AND '23 GENERAL ELECTIONS: THE ADVANCEMENT OF YORUBA NATION AND THE QUEST FOR TRUE FEDERALISM IN NIGERIA

It is in full joy and gladness today as we celebrate Nigeria’s 62nd Independence Anniversary.
Over the past years, our country has been through a lot of contradictions, challenges, conflicts, and temptations- Mostly in this last Dispensation of Democracy administration. We have seen trust betrayed and opportunities mortgaged. We have seen hopes
dashed and steady steps to progress compromised and that What has been good and appreciated by all persons of goodwill is that we have emerged from all these tribulations stronger, more united, more focused, and more committed to repositioning our country for peace, stability, security, growth, sustainable development and democracy.

More importantly, despite the various challenges that we have faced, the sanctity of the Nigerian state has remained intact and strong. We have steadily and collectively rededicated ourselves to the unity and progress of Nigeria. The burning desire to build a nation where no one is oppressed and where opportunities abound for our people to reach the highest points of their creative and
productive abilities has remained as strong as ever.

As a united and reformed Student body, we have been affected mentally and physiologically by the lingering industrial ASUU strike. The recurrence of the ASUU strike has numerous negative impacts on us- something the government and ASUU don’t consider when they fail to come to an agreement. We lost a whole session to this same madness two years ago. The same thing is already happening now, with the ongoing strike.

Education is the panacea that liberates an individual from slavery, while the university is the brain box of a nation. The education sub-sector, especially tertiary institutions in Nigeria, has witnessed incessant closures due to avoidable industrial actions in recent times.

The Causes of ASUU strikes in Nigerian universities have become so problematic that parents and students are divided in their opinion on who is responsible for these lingering crises; When some view government's nonchalant attitude and lack of commitment to the welfare of the education sector as the cause, others blame ASUU on their radicalism, confrontation approach and insatiable demands.

Under the Negative effects; disruptions in academic programs serve as a non-motivational factor to the students. It is
not surprising therefore that during strike actions, most students are seen involved in diverse activities such as sexual
immorality, cyber scam, poolbetting, unnecessary gossips, watching of films and reading comic materials for
entertainment purposes rather than reading their books. In the long run, they soon forgot about academics and are no
longer prepared for class activities which negatively affects their learning capabilities.

Even though the strike has been a major setback in the educational system as it has perpetually slowed down the already set academic calendar and rendered students’ effort to reconcile with their desired grade futile, the worst part of it is the stand-still feelings for the past 8 months, watching your peers grow past you and feeling deep down that your life is somewhat stunted in comparison. No amount of learning side skills can replace that sense of defeat even after the resumption.

Upon negotiations with the British colonial masters and among themselves through several constitutional conferences, the nationalists and founding fathers of the republic agreed to a federation of three regions (later four) with internal autonomy and constitutionally guaranteed powers over many areas of cultural and economic development. Each region had its own constitution and symbols including coat of arms, and diplomatic representation abroad.

With a true federal constitution which privileged fiscal federalism, the Western Region, home to the Yoruba nation, enjoyed a bustling economy, a thriving social life, and a liberal welfare policy with a lesser focus on education, health, and rural development. A visionary political class worked collaboratively with a dedicated civil service which prioritized policy analysis in service of the elected leaders. The result was one progressive program after the other, leading to the achievement of “First in Africa” in notable areas of development, and a happy citizenry.

From the federalism of the 1950s and 1960s, Nigeria became a unitary state in 1966 and has remained so till date, with disastrous effects on democratic norms, social welfare, ethnic relations, and economic development. Insecurity, rarely experienced in the 1950s, is now a dreadful challenge. Foreign herdsmen, bandits, and kidnappers litter the landscape and are overwhelming our national security infrastructure.

Nigeria has a national police which is incapable of keeping citizens safe but a workable alternative is all but ruled out. While governors are constitutionally classified as their states’ Chief Security Officers, they are so only in name. Most dangerous for the survival of the nation is the widespread perception of unjust domination by one section.

Amid the many problems that Nigeria battles, the Yoruba nation have never been in a more challenging situation. Education which used to be the Number 1 priority of the regional government, and which gave Westerners the head start in the days of true federalism, has collapsed completely.

The young ones who are fortunate to get into tertiary institutions and receive degrees cannot find jobs in the midst of a wrecked economy. This has resulted in a ridiculously high rate of unemployment. With unemployment sky high, high rate of poverty is inevitable. So is crime, and so is disease.

As preparations toward the 2023 General elections are in top gear; We the National Executives Council of the National Association of Yoruba Students hereby wish to state our stance on which region should produce the Next President of the Country and also want to educate Nigerians and Yoruba students in particular on the need to ignore all forms of campaigns of calumny.

The report making the rounds that the AFENIFERE GROUP has endorsed a Certain Presidential Candidate who is not from the Yoruba Race calls for concerns and immediate attention.

For the umpteenth time, the Leaders of Afenifere are well-respected Elder Statesmen who had in one way or the other served the country and the entire Yoruba ethnicity in different capacities; Thus, they are entitled to their opinions as far as matters relating to the Development and Advancement of Yoruba Nation is concerned.

However, this is not the best time for the Elder Statesmen to witch-hunt a particular candidate all in the name of having personal differences with some of their Leaders.

We have Three Sons of Yoruba Nation-Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the APC Omoyele Sowore of the AAC, Prince Adewole of the SDP and Comr. vying to become the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria come 2023 and we want to urge the Elder Statesmen to see these three as their own Brothers even as an Igbo man will never talk ill against any of his Kinsmen all in the name of politics.

Without mincing words, we want to unapologetically condemn in strong terms the comments of Prof. Pat Utomi on the Health Status of one of the Three Presidential Candidates of Yoruba Origin, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently on a National TV; It’s pertinent we remind Prof. Pat Utomi that only God determines the length of years one spends on the Planet Earth and not Human Speculations nor assumptions.

During the build up to 2015 Presidential Elections, one of the Major Campaign propaganda used against Gen. Muhammadu Buhari was that he won’t last long as President due to his deteriorating state of health but fortunately Gen. Muhammadu Buhari is getting healthier by the day and will finish his tenure as President in good health.

It is time for us to come together as one indivisible Ethinc Group and support our own brothers and not castigating them nor sabotaging their efforts on and off media; thereby collectively restore our consciousness back to the Yoruba Nation.

We are all very much aware of the challenges Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu went through before he could get the APC Presidential ticket and we are not also unaware of the fact that Comr. Omoyele Sowore passed through hell before he could get his Party’s ticket likewise Prince Adewole of the SDP.

These Three Distinguished Personalities need our supports by all means and we are stating emphatically here that as we head towards 2023 Campaign, the Yoruba adage “Omo Eni o se idi bebere ka fi ileke si idi Omo elomiran” remains our standing order- The Yorubas will vote for Yorubas!

With the center’s roadblock to restructuring, it’s understandable that frustration is at fever pitch and the demand for self-determination has intensified in the last several years. Even when Afenifere, the foremost Yoruba politico-cultural organization, has insisted on restructuring but hasn’t supported secession, Odudua Republic agitation is on the rise. It is therefore in order to make a few observations.

Indeed, it is becoming more and more apparent to us that our challenge as far as restructuring is concerned is not just with one party or one zone. It is with the professional political class. Many aspiring politicians, including presidential hopefuls, whether from the north or south want to preserve the status quo for either of two misinformed reasons. While some are just selfish power grabbers looking out only for self, others may genuinely think that the more power the center has, the more good they can do for all regions from the center. But that hasn’t been our experience since 1966.

We wish to also express our profound gratitude to the Leadership of the AAC, APC and the SDP for fielding candidates of Yoruba origin and we are assuring them that as Students’ Leaders in the Region, we will ensure by all means that only Candidates from our Region get highest votes from our Region; this we will achieve through our Orientation Programmes, Town hall meetings, Press Briefing and others.

How did we get here?

They graze our farms at will, threaten us on our land, kidnap and kill our people, rape our wives and daughters, and our government turns a deaf ear. They want to dominate us on our land

If only they know such days of conquest no longer exist. They're leaving our land and nothing is stopping that.
