Politics / Re: President Tinubu Appoints Uzoma Nwagba As CEO Of Consumer Credit Corporation by aieromon(m): 8:42pm On Apr 05
President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Engineer Uzoma Nwagba as the new Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP).

According to a statement by Presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, on Friday night, the appointment was in keeping with the President’s dedicated efforts to ensure financial inclusion and economic prosperity for the majority of Nigerians.

Engineer Nwagba, 36, holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the Harvard Business School and a first-class Bachelor of Engineering from Howard University, Washington DC.

Prior to his appointment, Ngalale said Engineer Nwagba served as Chief Operating Officer of the Bank of Industry (BoI), in charge of driving micro-credit and other financial interventions at the institution.

“He had also served as Senior Investment Associate, specializing in financial services (banking, insurance, pensions) at the African Capital Alliance.

“Engineer Nwagba was a Software Engineer at Microsoft, where he led multiple teams charged with building enterprise and mobile software for emerging markets (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and Nigeria), before his transition to finance.

“The President expects the new Chief Executive Officer of this critical agency to bring to bear his wealth of experience in finance and technology, as well as his record in driving financial interventions across Nigeria in this new role in order to expand access to credit to all classes of Nigerian citizens, while promoting financial inclusion, and enhancing the quality of life of the Nigerian people as they access the tangibles of prosperity,” the statement said.

Politics / Re: Labour Party's Edo Gov Ticket In Jeopardy Due To Running Mate's False Birth Info by aieromon(m): 4:54pm On Apr 05
There are strong indications that the LP Deputy Governorship candidate Mrs Alufokhai may have submitted false information on her form EC9 as displayed by the commission.

On page 2 of her affidavit sworn at the Epe Division of the High Court on March 22, 2024, Alufokhai stated that she was born on May 18, 1981 in Imo State; yet on page 4 of the same affidavit, she claimed that she obtained her First School Leaving Certificate in 1981 - the same year she was born.

It was gathered that the Labour Party governorship candidate, Akpata, had been unsettled since the discrepancies were noticed.

SaharaReporters learnt that the possibility that it could have been a mistake was considered. However, it was also learnt that Akpata had been lobbying to replace his running mate before the April 15, 2024 deadline INEC had fixed as the last day for the replacement of candidates.

SaharaReporters learnt that in turn, Mrs Alufokhai has informed the party that she has no intention of withdrawing; and has pushed back at Akpata, claiming he should be the one replaced because he deposed in his affidavit that he had not only taken up a second nationality in a foreign country but that he had also sworn an oath of total allegiance to Vanuatu’s President.

“How can anyone be talking about primary school certificate when they themselves have sworn that they are loyal to a foreign country? Olu should remove the log in his eye before he comes to harass me,” a member of the party executive council said he overheard Mrs Alufokhai saying at its secretariat in Abuja.

Akpata, who is a cousin of Governor Godwin Obaseki, is from the majority Edo South. He seems to have tried to play a game of numbers when he decided to pick his running mate from Edo North – the second-largest voting population bloc in the state.

Sources informed SaharaReporters that Akpata's controversial emergence as the LP governorship candidate in the alleged heavily dollarized party primaries meant he had to concede the selection of his deputy to Julius Abure and other party chieftains as part of his commitment to the reconciliation process.

According to the sources, they reportedly convinced him that Mrs. Yinka Alufokhai “was a powerful grassroots mobiliser; and that as a young woman with Igbo roots, the Obidient Movement would easily adopt her”.

Many Labour Party chieftains have faulted the choice of Mrs Alufokhai, who was sacked a year ago as Owan West Local Government Chairman for allegations of fraud and anti-party activities. Sources close to Akpata say he is now convinced she is part of a plot concocted by the LP National Chairman Abure to sabotage his ticket after the latter’s public humiliation and arrest days before the LP governorship primaries in Benin City, one of the sources said.

Before Akpata emerged as LP candidate, Abure had publicly stated that he believed that for equity, fairness and justice, power should rotate to Edo Central. Several LP aspirants have since passed public votes of no-confidence on the LP primaries and the LP candidate.

On his part, Akpata is also enmeshed in deep controversy over the Oath of Allegiance he swore to another country and revealed in the particulars displayed by INEC.

In a shocking revelation, Akpata swore an Oath of Allegiance to Vanuatu – a small island country with a population of about 350,000 people. To become an honorary citizen which gives you a Vanuatu passport, one is expected to make a ‘minimum donation’ of $US130,000 to the government. Vanuatuan passports provide visa-free travel to 113 countries.

While Nigerian law does not prohibit Nigerians from taking dual citizenships; swearing an oath of allegiance to a foreign power might disqualify a candidate from seeking public office.

The National Working Committee of the party is jittery over the revelations and has summoned an emergency meeting to address the new developments.

When SaharaReporters contacted Mrs Alufokhai, she said that it was a typographical error.

She said that her date of birth is May 18, 1981, and that her First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC) was obtained in 1989.

"My date of birth is 18/05/1981. My FSLC was obtained in 1989. So for my date of birth and FSLC to bear the same year, that's a typographical error as you can see," she said in a message to SaharaReporters.

Politics / Re: New Electricity Tariff A Deception: Sam Amadi by aieromon(m): 12:24pm On Apr 05
Sam Amadi (2011)
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, on Tuesday informed Chief Executive Officers of electricity distribution companies that the last schedule of the 2008/2013 regime of Multi Year Tariff Order (MYTO) will be operational as from July 1, 2011.

This development will see to a marginal increase in kilowatt hour of electricity from N8.50 to N10.00 from that date.

Commenting on the development, NERC Chairman, Dr. Sam Amadi said, “The marginal increase was since approved in 2008 and we have the responsibility to inform the public as part of our commitment to transparency.”

https://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/06/electricity-tariff-goes-up-18-from-july-1-2011/amp/

Sam Amadi (2013)
Despite condemnation by Nigerians over the increase in electricity charges without improved power supply, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has said the increase in fixed charges for electricity consumers is aimed at guaranteeing stable electricity supply in the nearest future.

Addressing a news conference in Abuja, NERC’s chairman, Dr Sam Amadi says the tariff paid by consumers is fair, reasonable and necessary to guarantee continuous improvement in electricity supply to homes and businesses in Nigeria.

He added that the multi-year tariff order of N500 fixed charge for 2012 was slightly increased to N700 with effect from June 2013 and as such there has not been an arbitrary increase of tariffs.

Electricity consumers in the country have been lamenting the annual increase in fixed charges which comes into effect on the 1st of June every year.

https://www.channelstv.com/2013/07/15/nerc-justifies-increase-in-electricity-fixed-charges/amp/

Sam Amadi (2015)
Chairman of NERC, Dr. Sam Amadi, says the new electricity tariff hike expected to come into effect by the end of October is aimed at ensuring cost-reflective tariffs in the Nigerian electricity supply industry.

He said the tariff review will bring about a cost-reflective tariffs in the industry, capable of attracting private investments, especially foreign direct investments, FDIs. It is also aimed at ensuring that these investments were bankable, Amadi said.

The Electric Power Sector Reform Act (2005) empowers NERC to review electricity tariffs in favour of Gencos and Discos, if market variables such as gas and its transportation cost, as well as naira to dollar ratio and inflation shift by over 5 percent.

The NERC chairman however warned that a balance needed to be maintained between investments attraction and winning the confidence of consumers.

“Bills will go up, but service quality also has to be ensured. We have to bear that in mind,” Amadi told a gathering of Nigerian power sector operators as well as local and foreign investors, including representatives from Manitoba Hydro International and the Africa Finance Corporation.

https://sweetcrudereports.com/nerc-defends-planned-electricity-tariff-hike/

Sam Amadi - Ex-NERC Chairman (2016)
However, justifying NERC’s stance, immediate past Chairman of NERC, Dr. Sam Amadi, described the Senate’s directive as illegal, unconstitutional and a direct encroachment on executive independence.

He told Vanguard: “The order by the Senate for NERC to rescind the tariff is a direct infringement on the independence of the executive to initiate policies, in this case through NERC. It is a subtle derogation of the powers of the executive. It offends the concept of separation of power. The legislature should not interfere and direct executive action. That is clearly against the law. It is unconstitutional.”

He argued that until a new board was reconstituted to consider reviewing or totally suspending the order, “nobody anywhere can validly review or suspend the current tariff.”

Are you willing to pay N178,000 monthly for electricity for a 24-hour supply?

Let's look at the facts on ground.

House 1
Power load = 2000W
Average of 20hrs/day gives 600 hours in a 30 day calendar month.
Power consumption = 2kW * 600h = 1200kWh
Cost of power consumed = ₦225 * 1200 = ₦270,000

House 2
Power load = 2000W
Power is generated using a 2.5 kVA petrol generator. Running wattage is 2000W.
Fuel efficiency = 1.1litres/hour (15 litres in 14 hours at 50% load - generator will consume more if we increase the load but let us stick with this for the purpose of this comparison)
For House 2 to generate 600hrs in a month requires 660L of PMS.
At ₦560/litre, House 2 will spend a sum of ₦369,600 in an attempt to replicate power supply from DISCOs. Maintenance cost has not been factored in these calculations.

House 1 ₦225/kWh
House 2 ₦600/kWh

A lot of small scale businesses spend up to ₦178,000 monthly running petrol generators.

Power is not cheap!

The Federal Government government, through the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), has approved a hike in the electricity rates for consumers categorized under Band A.

This is contained in a press statement by the Vice Chairman of NERC Musliu Oseni on Wednesday.

Oseni, the Vice Chairman of NERC, stated that the tariff hike would result in customers paying N225 per kilowatt hour, up from the existing N66.

He mentioned that these customers account for 15% of the 12 million electricity consumers in the nation.

This is even worse. It clearly says poor man will never enjoy electricity anymore in Nigeria, because electricity will now be given to people who can pay higher

"Poor man" has never enjoyed electricity, they have only benefited from dirt cheap power. If you must enjoy, prepare to pay a premium cost.

This was the case many years ago under NEPA when wealthy people used to pay them to supply electricity to only those who can pay higher

socialmediaman:
This government is not clueless, it is wishing that poor Nigerians who have lost everything become even poorer

This group of persons will be unaffected by the tariff increase as you wrongly assume.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) says the increase in tariff will only affect customers enjoying 20 hour power supply across the country.

It said the hike would only affect Band A customers, but not other customers in Bands B, C and D.

Musliu Oseni, Vice Chairman, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), said this at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to him, the commission has approved the increase in electricity tariff paid by Band A customers from N68/KWh to N225KWh adding that the increase will not affect customers on bands Band C.

The vice chairman said that the commission had also downgraded some customers on the Band A to Band B due to the non-fulfillment of the required hours of electricity provided by the electricity distribution company.

“We currently have over 800 feeders that are categorised as Band A, but it will now be reduced to under 500. This means that 17 per cent of the feeder now qualifies as Band A.

“The commission using technology discovered that many of the feeders that the electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) currently brandish as Band A are not meeting the required service and as such.

“The feeders were ordered to be downgraded immediately as a way of protecting consumers,” he said.

Mr Oseni said that customers hitherto classified as Band A customers would not be affected by the rate review.

He said that as part of enforcement mechanisms to ensure that areas affected by the review get the 20 hours supply, DisCos have been mandated to set up rapid response teams in locations where the feeders are located.

FIRS has apologised.

A statement signed by Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser, Media to the FIRS chairman, Zacch Adedeji conveyed the Service’s “unreserved apologies for this misinterpretation.”

The FIRS spokesperson’s statement reads in full: “Our attention has been drawn to a statement by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) about a flier posted on our social media platforms with the headline ‘Jesus paid your debts, not your taxes.’ As a responsible agency of government, we would like to say we did not put out the flier purposely to denigrate Jesus Christ or detract from the huge sacrifice He made for humanity. We are acutely aware that the essence of the Easter period is to celebrate this huge sacrifice.

“The message was our way of uniquely engaging taxpayers and to remind them of the need to prioritise payment of their taxes as a civic obligation. Yes, we would say the message ruffled feathers in some circles. The unintended meaning/insinuation being read into the post was not what we were out to communicate as an agency.

“Good a thing, this much is acknowledged by CAN in its statement wherein it said ‘We recognise that the intended message may have been to creatively engage taxpayers…’ We wish to offer our unreserved apologies for this misinterpretation.

“FIRS, as a responsible agency, has no religion and will not bring down any religion or offend the sensibilities of adherents of various faiths in the country. Our goal is to assess, collect and account for revenue for the wellbeing of the Federation. We believe it is an investment in the progress of the country when citizens pay their taxes. Once again, we wish to apologise to CAN and Christians who felt offended at the unintended consequence of our message on Easter Sunday,” Mr Adekanmbi stated.

Politics / Re: Dangote Refinery Ships Naphtha To Asia And Fuel Oil To The United States by aieromon(m): 12:36am On Apr 03
Nigeria's Dangote oil refinery has issued tenders to sell two fuel cargoes for export, the first from the newly commissioned refinery, trading sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

The first cargo is 65,000 metric tons of low-sulphur straight run fuel oil, which Dangote has awarded to Trafigura and is due to load at the end of February, three of the sources said. Trafigura declined to comment.
At least one refiner said they had been offered the cargo by Trafigura without elaborating further.

The second tender is for about 60,000 tons of naphtha, three other sources said. Two of them added that the tender closes on Feb. 15. Loading details were not immediately available.

The two fuels on offer are typical products of running light sweet crude through a crude distillation unit (CDU) in a refinery without further upgrading capacity. It is expected to take months for upgrading units to be brought online, experts have said.

https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/nigerias-dangote-refinery-export-first-fuel-cargoes-2024-02-14/

The plant has refined around 8 million barrels of oil between January and February and will take months to get to full capacity. So far, Vitol has prepaid for some product cargoes to help the refinery buy crude, while Trafigura has swapped some crude oil in exchange for future fuel cargoes, sources with knowledge said. Geneva-based Vitol and Trafigura declined to comment

The Rector of the Nigeria College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria, Kaduna State, Captain Akali Modibo, has debunked the insinuation that two helicopters are missing in the college.

He said the helicopters in question were duly sold as they were becoming a drain on the resources of the college, revealing that the college spent N5bn maintaining them for about 10 years while lying idle in the hangar.

It would be recalled that the choppers, Bell 206, were bought during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan for the purpose of training pilots, but the equipment were not the type used for training by the college.

As a result, the planes were redundant for 10 years until a decision was made to sell them.

“If the government had involved NCAT, we would have told them the type of aircraft we can use for training, which is piston engine helicopters. Nowhere in the world is this helicopter type used for training. It’s like you using a Boeing 737 aircraft to teach someone how to become a pilot; you don’t do that.”

Mr Modibbo explained that a federal government licenced auctioneer, Messrs Tresmo Nigeria Limited, was appointed to dispose of the affected helicopters sequel to the approval and valuation reports obtained from the Federal Ministries of Aviation and Works, respectively.

According to him, the auctioneer paid $275,782,661.25 and $280,417,661.25 (totalling N1.2 billion) vide FGN Remita receipts bearing reference numbers 3008-4333-3046 and 1008-4304-1098, accordingly.

Furthermore, the NCAT chief executive said that the Federal Ministry of Aviation in a letter dated 15th March 2023, granted approval for the disposal of the two Bell 206 helicopters to enable the college to acquire Basic Trainer Helicopters.

The NCAT Rector added that the auctioneer also accepted and executed the disposal of the helicopters via a letter signed by Baba Malik on 7th April 2023, which also remitted the proceeds of N1.2 billion into the Federal Government account.
