The former minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, recently retweeted several tweets against the subsidy removal by President Tinubu.

A twitter user reminded her of what she posted in 2017 against the Buhari government, where she strongly recommended that the price of fuel be left at the hand of market forces and subsidy/price controls be removed.

It's only in developed countries that the phrase "market forces" can be deemed fit because they have several market indices and tools to monitor and analyze changes in fuel price no matter how small which we lack in Nigeria.. Ask them for data now, you'll start hearing stories.

Moreover, the main idea behind "market forces" is to make prices competitive and become affordable for people to get products but reverse is the case with NNPCL in Nigeria.. their own market forces is to hike prices and kill Nigerians. How do they expect people earning below 50k monthly with families, some less than 30k monthly in some states to survive?
Wickedness of the highest order.

But free market forces arent in control. NNPC, a govt entity is still an umpire. NNPC took our commonwealth and invested in Dangote Refinery. If free market forces were allowed, other business would be allowed to export crude and import refined products … and NNPC would be forced to share that $3bn it had invested only in Dangote amongst refinery builders as rebates/grants…

This is what some of us warned about , Market forces is very dangerous in a country like Nigeria where nothing works so the price will only just be going up and never come down

If you were baking bread at N1000 and selling at N1300 a loaf, would you sell it , on government orders , at N200 so that you can help the poor?

I would like your honest answer to this question.

So, government should bring in price controls at all sectors.

That is a recipie for economic disaster.

The former communist countries all wrecked their economies trying to protect their citizens from market forces. As a result there was mass scarcity, queues for essential commodities, and bad production.

When the wall fell in 1990, the market economy reached them. Today, while most former communiust countries are not paradise yet, the shelves are full to the brim.

NNPC and other marketers have to pay taxes, salaries at competitive rates, and other things. They can only do so if fuel is sold at a profit.

There is a cold reason why all the candidates backed fuel subsidy removal this time, even tinubu, and atiku who used to back the thing.

Well, that is what is happening now. Other marketers have started importing.

Plus, apart from Dangote, there are 5 other refineries that are private. BUA too is coming up. Then NNPC is allegedly repairing all its refineries fast.

How much is PMS in those other countries? It was sincerely and reasonably expected that PMS price would go up at least at this beginning. With the floating of naira and removal of subsidy, tell how you expect PMS price to be immediately less?
Since you have data, can you please inform the house on the amount of PMS in Ghana, Cameroon, UK, USA, UAE etc.

Baking in this context would mean value addition or processing/refining activities if I'm correct.. In Nigeria, bulk of the PMS, AGO etc. used are being imported while our refineries lay closed and non-functional.

The problem is that noone knows exactly if what NNPCL and the other marketers quote about costs of importation, storage, distribution etc. are actual figures or inflated figures for them to make excess gain.

The cost of manufacturing or value addition in-country would have been a pointer to what prices of petroleum products should be not the nonsense importation going on in a country blessed with abundant oil and gas deposits.

Let me ask you.. where is the sense in Mele Kyari investing billions of dollars in Nigerian State money into a private owned company Dangote refinery when Port Harcourt and Warri refinery are there that needs to be revived?.. Is this the proper way to run a country of over 220 million people?

Well, the thing is, we did the equivalent of selling bread at 200 naira in our petrol industry for years...which is why we ended up being a importer of fuel with all the mess.

Fuel costs money to refine, and as a result, it means that it has to make a profit, and more profit for it to work. Selling it at a loss is what led to abuses.

Well now subsidy is gone, we should soon know how much it would cost to refine at home and transport at home.
