Health / Re: 3.2m Nigerians Live With HIV by Airforce11: 9:22pm On Apr 24, 2015
I am a carrier of the virus for over 3 years now and living just fine. It wasn't easy initially hearing about my status but thank God I had a good doctor who is also a friend that counselled me. Just casually went to his hospital to carry out a comprehensive test including HIV which I normally do periodically. Thank God I found out about my status early. My advise is go get tested and know your status. So many people out there who for various reasons refused to get tested. Its not as bad as people feel or think about it presently.

fsb: Okay so on NL, there are threads for everything including how to secure a visa (not that the idea of eloping is bad altogether)....anyway, I work in that field and I thought it might be a good idea to start an online support group thread dedicated to every nairalander living with HIV.

For those who have successfully been on antiretrovirals for years, please share your experiences/challenges with us as someone in here might benefit.

For those looking for answers to questions, please come in here ....physicians providing ARV care are also welcome.

This thread is welcomed and timely. I'm appealing that, thiis should be on the the front page for a while to enlighten NLdrs on HIV.

I tested positive last year September, it wasn't easy initially but wit d counsel from myy doctor n people here gave me some respite. The problem I had initially was taking my medication bc I was not used to it so most times forget taking it. I complained to my doctor who advised me to set an alarm as a reminder. This really helped me n also want to commend a positive Nairalander also who helped me in reminding me to take my drugs.

I also made so much research about d virus as its not a death sentence as ignorant people thinks.

Before discovery of my status, I don't take drugs with water but soft drinks. Myu mum and wife complain alot about such habit but don't really care. I don't have a choice anymore bc I would not want to be drinking soft drink every morning n night throughout my life. That is one of lifestyle I have changed so far.

About how I contacted the virus? Cant really pinpoint how I got it.

PLWHIV can alwaz network to assist one another in the areas of advice especially for those who just discovered their status.
I ll be here to answer any question relating to my status.
I love u all.

applelady: grin cheesy grin grin, Airforce are you match making, the guy is inlove with his girl naa no time to look at another girl HIV or not.

I'm not a match maker but it would be appropriate for people with similar state come together and encourage themselves and fight it head-on. if I was not married and discovered my status as positive, I would prefer someone with similar status because she ll understand better. I know you re already inloved with somebody so does LIFTMEUPOLORD but you guys can link up and become friends. this ll enable u to encourage each other. I have some female friends who re equally positive, we talk from time to time and this encourages us alot. If I was not married, I would have gladly danced to the alter with one of them.
I don't know how u guys ll start it bt something should be started.
liftemeupolord :
dont let it worry u. If not u will worsen ur situation. Try to go to good clinic and start treatment. Above belive in God for there is nothing he cannot do. Take care.

That's. what I just talked about, the encouragement and support that all of us need at this point in our lives. lucky for me, I have a wife who is negative n she understands and support me alot. However, I know it wouldnt be easier if we were single, I wud have jst stylishly take a walk or tell her to look for someone else.
Applelady, please do not allow this to weigh you down. God ll always direct our hearts to take the right step in handling situation like this.

oluwaisinvolved: Many thanks to you all. I'm grateful for all the contributions.

Micki83, thanks for giving me ideas. My mind is made up to let her know the truth & my confidence level has increased. I'll keep y'all posted on the outcome.

Thanks again!

[b]My friend, the post by MIcki83 is on point. The truth is you may not really be certain where, when and how you contacted the virus. You may have even contacted the virus through your fiancee if she has not tested to confirm her status or any other means. Many people out there do not know their status. You should be grateful to God for knowing your status at this early stage. About your health, your doctor should be able to educate and counsel you on how to treat yourslf and live a normal live.

Hiv is no longer a death sentence as it used to be some years back. You can live your full years if properly taken care off by adherinh to your drug regimen. There are discordant and even Hiv couples who stil have unprotected sex without infecting each other and make babies that are Hiv-. So there's no cause of alarm but there are medical conditions attached to it.

About informing your fiancee about your status, that is the best and appropriate thing for you to do. However, the mode of breaking the news is what is in contention here.

For your information, i'm Hiv+ and married. I got to know about my status last september but broke the ice to my wife just today about my status. Its something i have been fighting for the past three months on how to go about it over this period but with the help and advise of a Hiv+ person on this forum and that of my doctor, we proposed a tactics i used and it was a success. I'm not saying that, it ll work for everybody because people are different.

i feigned to my wife for about three days that i was not feeling too well and that if it persist, i ll go to the hospital for medical checkup. Incidentially she said sho would accompany to also make some complain. When we got to the hospital, we explained how we were feeling about our health condition to the doctor. After the examinations, he told us we re goin to carry out a comprehensive test in a bid to assist in the treatment (these are all arranged). The doctor collected our blood samples and asked us to come back in two days time.

Meanwhile, before we went back to the hospital, i have called the doctor and he told me my wife is negative. I was so happy for her status as she has not been infected despite having unprotected sex with her before my confirmation status anyway. Since then, i have been on rubber with her. Though using rubber is not new to us before now so it doesnt breed suspicion.

Finally, we met the doctor this morning. Meanwhile , before he started with her result, he did all those their talk talk counselling and told her she is very ok as she is negative and all other test results are excellent. He carried my result and told her my cd4 count is low and i tested positive to hiv. he continued immediately telling her not to worry that the disease is just like diabetes, hypertension and other ailments where there ll be drug regimen for the treatment. I saw my wife almost shedding tear but she held herself back and started consolling me not to worry, that she ll be there for me.

The doctor told her, she has to be by my side and need my support in ensuring that i take my drugs and all will be fine with me. My wife affirmed that, she ll not relent in her duty as a wife and with this i almost cried for the love she showed me.

This is my story and this was how my wify got to know about my status. OP, this may not work for you as you are not yet couple as against me who is married. But you have to disclose your status to her, the earlier the better. I wish you best of luck

tolu_walase: thanks airforce I wasn't given any referral letter. I did d test in A̶̲̥̅ lab.D first time I did an HIV test was 3yrs ago and was negative.I met my ex some months after then.To be sincere with Ɣou we were on Condoms F♠Я̩̥̊ some time before we started doing flesh to flesh.D relationship lasted F♠Я̩̥̊ three years before I got to know I was not d only one he's dating.we broke up and just felt like knowing my status when I read ur story.all my dreams have been shattered.pls could u tell me A̶̲̥̅ Centre I can go? F♠Я̩̥̊

Please do not allow this weigh you down. Its just normal for anyone hearing his/her positive status for the first time and be worried. However this should not stop you from living your normal life and actualising your dreams. There are several centres where you can do your confirmatory test but very sure you would be asked to do another status test before confirmatory if you go to a private or government hospital. The tests in government hospitals are free of charge but do not know where you are based.

if you are within Abuja, i would be able to guide you since i'm based there but outside Abuja not too sure. However, other nairalanders can direct you if you disclose just your location.

Waiting for your response.

tolu_walase: i'm still finding it difficult to believe that I'm HIV positive.I have been told to go to A̶̲̥̅ general hospital F♠Я̩̥̊ a confirmatory test but I don't even know how to go about it.what wl I say I want to do when I get there? please help

Firstly, its a good idea you went for test to determine your status. This ll determine on the next step for you to take. if it turns out positive as you said, its very necessary to do another test to authenticate your status which is called confirmatory test. There are some test centres that does not have the equipment for the confirmatory test, hence you are referred to a clinic or hospital that has such facility. Normally, your are given a referral letter to the clinic where you can go for such test.

In my case, the clinic where i did my first test also did the confirmatory test.

let me say that, even if you are confirmed positive, nothing to worry about since you cannot change anything about it. Follow the doctor's and counsellors advise strictly and you ll even look much healthier than even people who are negative. You ll live a normal life like any other person walking the streets.

By the way, its not everybody that is confirmed positive that is placed on Anti Retroviral (ARVs)Drugs except when your CD4 counts go below 350 that you ll be placed on ARVs. However, you ll be advised to be on immune booster drugs and healthy living style.

I hope this ll give you some guide. You can also google about it to get more information about the illness.

How did you know that, he's hiv+. I'm equally positive without any form of tingling in my body. If he is positive has he started taking ARVs. Infact, i ll advise he post his personal feelings here by himself rather than you doing the bidding for him. I'm saying this because there re some questions that may be asked that you may not be able to answer for him. He may use a pseudo name to hide his identity.

He showed me the test results and explained all the test results but refused to make a copy for me. He said, he has opened a special file for me and all my test and medications ll be filed there for record purposes.

First of all, my cd4 count is 481. He said its not too bad and that, administering ART starts from when the cd4 count is 350. He also stated that, i can commence treatment immediately but advised he place me on immune drugs for like 2months and thereafter come for another cd4 count test before the next line of action. He have me two packets of IMMUNACE containing 30 drugs per packet to cover for 2months when i ll visit again for another test. He also gave me one packet of ASTYMIN when i complained of not having appetite to eat since i got the HIV+ results.

According to my doctor, the kidney, liver and all other test results are very ok.

All doctors and professionals here, i need your expert advise on the result and medications above. josh4ever: For now, from your test results, you're in top shape apart from the HIV positive result. However, my minor concern is your lymphocyte count which though is within normal range, is on the high side of the normal range. It might infer that your white cells are trying to fight off the infection for now and you might not need any medication. But the condition for starting you on ART is the CD4 count.

Bros, don't go herbal. If they were genuine, do you think people wouldn't on their own recommend them with visible names and addresses? Someone here was saying try herbal that his relation was positive and bla bla bla, the question is this, WHO IS THIS PERSON THAT HAS DONE THIS WONDER? I know many patients who met a very painful end by patronizing the herbal dudes. With ALL due respect to them, I don't believe they have the cure.

Another thing for you bro is to ensure you religiously take your medication.

And LIVE a good healthy life.

Thanks for the professional advise you just gave here. My doctor who incidentally is my friend has even warned me to always sought for his advise before doing anything about my health. I trust him very much with his experience in the medical line, however, just getting more informed about the disease as he may not be able to give me all the details i ll want in a very short interval because of his busy schedules. i ll be going for my cd4 count tomorrow.

Goodmorning all, thank God for this new day. My today ll definately be far better than yesterday. i ll continue to thank all Nairalanders who have made one contribution or the other on my thread. God ll continue to guide and direct you as you guide me through my present condition. Indeed, i have not skipped any contributions here and it has really dampened my fear about the HIV virus. i have hope that, i ll live a normal life based on peoples' advise and comments. i woke up this morning feeling stronger than yesterday. In nairaland here, i have seen that, i am winninhg the war in me because i have read more encouraging comments than otherwise.

cuteonyii: Bros it is well... you have actually taken the first bold step that leads to survival..knwoledge is power and you have already seek and found one.

I have a close relative who tested Pos+ 2008. His own case was already in the second stage before discovery. then has started taking the drugs and now you wont even know such thing exist in him..very heathy looking..

BUT ADVICE.. MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT USE IT AS A WEAPON..

My conscience ll not allow me to do that. i am well educated, informed and above all God fearing to engage in a killing spree.

a1solution: as
for me I suspect op is a HiV counsellor just using trick to advice
people or an investigative journalist makin research. may God give you
all good health.

My friend, your observation is absolutely incorrect in this case as it is my story and what affects me. i know most NLders re enlightened in different areas. however, you ll see the good, the bad and the ugly over here. Its in me to sieve the sand from the rice and take the best advise.

As promised, i ll post my result here later and need professionals to interprete its content. LET THE COMMENT CONTINUE TO COME. I LOVE YOU ALL.

josh4ever: Well, as a staff with one of the federal agencies on HIV, I'd like to ask you a few questions:

Was the test done in a Government health centre? I ask this because we have come to understand that some private hospitals use test kits that are not of the national algorithm and may give false positive results.

Was a confirmatory test carried out or was it just a one time test and declare thingy? I say this because every positive result MUST be confirmed by a different test kit so that we don't give a negative person the trauma of dealing with a false positive result

Having dealt with these issues, assuming its been confirmed that you are truly positive, brother, it's no more the death sentence it used to be. I'd advise you to go to any heart to heart centre for a thorough counseling session which by the way should have been carried out before the test was done by the doctor who requested the test. Also, with regular medication and with a healthy lifestyle, you can outlive many of us here. Many have been living with the virus for more than 15yrs now. Some might pass you on the way and you wouldn't know unless you were told. The key to survival is to eat well, be fussy about your health and most importantly, believe and have the confidence that you can survive this. To avoid stigmatization, you need to keep the information on a need to know basis so as to avoid the stigmatization from uninformed persons. It is your decision to inform your family and if you are married, please take your wife for a counseling and testing session rather than breaking the news directly to her as you may not break the news properly and the results might be dire.
Please if you have other sexual partners, urge them to go for testing and pls do not think of spreading the virus because it might actually become your death since you could re-infect yourself with a harsher strain of the virus and compound your problem.

Remember, ther is no need to blame yourself or anyone for this. It's just a disease and you can LIVE...

Finally, bros, LIVE YOUR LIFE
