Turaki’s Political Orphans: Abandoned by Jonathan, Deserted by Makinde By James Obute Politics often rewards consistency, loyalty, and strategic patience. Unfortunately, Governor Seyi Makinde’s decision to abandon the Turaki-led presidential process and emerge as the presidential candidate of the APM raises serious questions about commitment, credibility, and political sincerity. For months, Nigerians watched as the Turaki-led orphans built their presidential project around former President Goodluck Jonathan. Meetings were held, consultations were conducted, screening arrangements were announced, and waivers were granted in anticipation of Jonathan’s participation. Yet throughout this process, Jonathan remained largely absent. He did not personally drive the campaign. He reportedly failed to appear for the submission of his nomination form when expected, leaving the orphans and Turaki officials waiting for a signal that never came. The result was a presidential project that increasingly appeared to be running ahead of its supposed beneficiary. While party orphans were speaking, organizing screenings, and securing waivers, the principal figure remained silent and distant from the process. Then came the ultimate irony. Just as the Turaki orphans moved toward ratifying Jonathan’s nomination, the very political force widely associated with promoting that project suddenly shifted direction. Governor Makinde accepted the presidential ticket of the APM, effectively walking away from the political structure that had invested considerable energy in the Jonathan project. The obvious question is simple: If the Turaki process was worth building, why abandon it? And if it was not worth believing in, why ask others to believe in it? To the orphans, Makinde’s move looks less like strategy and more like political convenience. It creates the impression that the Turaki platform was merely a temporary vehicle, useful only until another opportunity appeared. Equally troubling is the role of Jonathan in the entire saga. A presidential aspiration cannot survive indefinitely on speculation, waivers, endorsements, and assumptions. Leadership requires presence. It requires ownership. It requires showing up. Yet, at virtually every critical stage, Jonathan appeared detached from a process supposedly built around him. In the end, Nigerians are left with a curious political spectacle: a candidate who never fully embraced the process and a political sponsor who ultimately chose a different platform altogether. For many observers, that combination does not project confidence. It projects confusion. The Turaki orphans, having invested their hopes, energy, and political capital in the project, now find themselves stranded between a candidate who never fully committed and a political ally who ultimately chose another path.

PDP: ON THE ISSUE OF THE CROSS-APPEAL AT THE SUPREME COURT Firstly, in the FHC of Justice Omotosho, and in his Judgement of October 31st, 2025 “Upheld” that in line with the PDP Constitution, only the National Legal Adviser (NLA) can represent the Party or appoint a counsel to handle on his behalf. Following the above, in the FHC of Justice Lifu, the Counsel for the Defendant (Uche SAN) filled an extra affidavit requesting the Court to enable him represent the Defendant (Damagum-led), he attached the Letter of Suspension against the NLA and stated that he was briefed while the NLA is on suspension. The Court granted; and Justice Lifu in his Judgment of 14th of November, 2025 acknowledged the Suspension as the ‘Reason’ for allowing the Counsel; and went ahead and “Dismissed” the Affidavit as having served its purpose following the Determination of the Main Appeal in favour of the Appellant (Gov Lamido) and considered it as not part of the substance of the Main Appeal, neither is it being contested by the Plaintiff nor the Defendant. At the Court of Appeal (CoA), in the 1st Motion - (Gov Lamido’s), Justice of the CoA acknowledged that additional affidavit made by the Defendant at the High Court/Appellant at the CoA (i.e., now Turaki-led) which allowed their Counsel (Uche SAN) to represent the Group given that the National Legal Adviser was on Suspension when he took the brief. The 3 Justices in their unanimous Judgment on the 9th of March 2026, equally “Upheld” the Decision made by the Lower Court. Still in the CoA, on the 2nd Motion - that is, the Justice Omotosho in the PDP Vs. Barr Autine Nwachukwu & Ors, the Justices went ahead suo moto (on their own accord) and mentioned that the “Dismissed” affidavit on suspension of the NLA which the Appellant did not mention or attached to his original filling. Though the Judgement equally “Upheld” the Dismissed Affidavit as earlier made in the 1st Motion. Consequently, at the Supreme Court (SC), the NLA filled a “CROSS-APPEAL” challenging the decision of the CoA to have mentioned the issue of Suspension “suo moto” in an issue that was determined before the said suspension? Though the CoA still “Upheld” the Lower Court Decision on its Dismissal. The Lead Judgement of the Supreme Court “Upheld” the Decisions of the FHC and CoA on the Dismissed Affidavit on Suspension and further affirmed that it was not part of the Main Motion for determination, because it was not contested for or against by any of the Parties in the Suits and therefore stands “Dismissed” - See Page 33 of the SC CTC. Following these facts submitted above, the SC Lead Judgement equally “Dismissed the Cross-Appeal” because accordingly, going into it the merits or demerits of the Cross-Appeal will amount will amount to “an academic exercise” given that the Issue of Suspension was not a substance to the Main Appeals and the Affidavit already dismissed by the Lower Courts - See SC CTC Page 34. To this end, the CoA and the SC determined only 2 Main Motions that “Upheld” the Nullification of the Ibadan 2025 National Convention. I hope this explanation suffices. Cheers, Chinwe Nnorom 09.05.26

*TRUE POSITION* *CA/ABJ/CV/1613/25* A. PRELIMINARY OBJECTION - Whether or not the Appellants had the right to institute the Appeal on behalf of the Party? 1. At the Trial Court, pursuant to Art.42 of the PDP Constitution, the National Legal Adviser of the PDP has the authority of their Constitution to appoint and or institute legal action on behalf of the PDP. At the Trial Court, Chief Ajibade who was the Nat. Legal Adviser of the PDP reserved the right to institute the suit. HOWEVER, upon his suspension from his office as National Legal Adviser, before the filing of the extant Appeal, any actions taken by Chief Ajibade is invalid as the National Working Committee assumed the requisite powers to appoint Counsel of their choice (Chief Chris Uche, SAN). *HELD* - The preliminary objection lacks merit and DISMISSED. B. THE MAIN APPEAL The Court of Appeal adopted the following issues for determination in the appeal, to wit; *ISSUE 1- FAIR HEARING* - The Court of Appeal is in agreement with the Trial Court (Fed. High Court) that Chief Chris Uche did not have the right to institute the suit on behalf of the Party as no instruction was donated to him by the National Legal Adviser (Chief Ajibade, SAN) at the time material. *HELD*- Issue 1 is resolved in favour of the Respondents. *ISSUE 2 - JURISDICTION OF THE COURT* - The question is whether or not the alleged grievances complained of by the 1st - 3rd Respondents border on Policies/Regulations/Guidelines or Meetings/Conferences, etc. - A close perusal of the Originating processes at the Trial Court including the reliefs sought by the 1st - 3rd Respondents, takes the summons outside of the internal affairs of the Party. The reliefs of the 1st - 3rd Respondents as the Trial Court border on compliance to statutory policies and regulations as opposed to internal meetings and conference as posited by the Appellants in this Appeal. - Pursuant to Sec. 222 - 229 and 251 CFRN 1999, and Sec 85 Electoral Act, the Federal High Court per Hon. Justice Omotosho .J. was right and justified to force the compliance of INEC with provisions of the Constituiton and Electroal Laws. See also Lawal v. PDP and SC/CV/35/25: Hon. Joshua v. INEC (Unreported). - The principal reliefs especially reliefs 1, 5, 7 and 8 are directed against INEC and their failure to comply with the prevalent and statutory laws, thereby falling within the exclusive jurisdiction of the Federal High Court in lifiting the veil of internal affairs of parties. *HELD*- Issue 2 is resolved in favour of the Respondents. *ISSUE 3 - WHETHER THE INTENTION OF THE 1ST - 3RD RESPONDENTS TO CONTEST IN ELECTIONS PRESUPPOSES LOCUS STANDI* - The 1st - 3rd Respondents as Nigerian citizens are armed with the constitutional rights to actively participate in parties including contesting in elections; therefore, they can enjoin the Courts to determine questions where those rights are breached or may be breached. - The 1st - 3rd Respondents therefore have the requisite locus standi to institute the Suit at the Trial Court. *HELD*- Issue 3 resolved in favour of the Respondents. *ISSUE 4- WHETHER THE TRIAL COURT RIGHTLY ENTERED JUDGEMENT* - This calls for the proper evaluation of facts and evidence before the Court. - The prerequisite in the instant suit is not just 'Notice' to the 4th Respondent but a *'VALID NOTICE*'. - The core of the 1st - 3rd Respondents claim is that the Appellants failed to conduct elections on some States thereby disenfranchising members in those geo-politocal zones. These facts were not controverted by the Appellants, and facts not controverted are deemed admitted. - The statutory timeline of 21 days was completely ignored by the Apellants. *HELD* - The Trial Court's intervention is not an intrusion into internal party affairs. The fulcrum of the claim of the 1st - 3rd Respondents is not political but on statutory compliance and monitoring of the 4th Respondent which are matters of democratic governance. The Trial Court rightly intervened. The reliance by the Appellants on *Osagie v. PDP* is grossly misplaced. *THE APPEAL AS A WHOLE* - The attempt of the Appellants to repackage the claims and judgment as an intra-party issue is untenable. - The Trial Court rightly intervened. - Judgment of the Federal High Court per Hon. Justice Omotosho. J. is upheld. - Cost of N2million awared against the Appellants. - Appeal is DISMISSED |

Distinguished Senator Samuel Anyanwu the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party has once again stamped his authority as a dominant political force in the South East, as he today orchestrated a massive and strategic influx of high-profile defectors into the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State. In what can only be described as a political masterstroke, Senator Anyanwu’s growing influence and unmatched grassroots appeal continue to draw key stakeholders, power brokers, and political structures across party lines into the PDP fold. His leadership is not only visible it is commanding, unifying, and results-driven. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Turaki Remanded to Kuje Correctional Facility After Failing to Perfect Bail Conditions ABUJA, NIGARIA – April 23, 2026. Following his arraignment yesterday at the Federal High Court, Abuja, senior lawyer and politician Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) has been remanded to the Kuje Correctional Facility after he was unable to perfect the bail conditions set by the court. Background of the Case Mr. Turaki was arraigned on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, on a one-count charge of providing false information to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), contrary to Section 140 of the Penal Code. The charge stems from an October 5, 2022, petition he allegedly submitted against one Saidi Mohammed Mainasara, which the prosecution claims was false and intended to mislead police authorities. Mr. Turaki entered a plea of not guilty. Bench Warrant Vacated The court had previously issued a bench warrant on March 26, 2026, due to Mr. Turaki’s repeated failure to appear. However, following his voluntary appearance on April 1, the presiding judge, Justice Peter Kekemeke, formally vacated the warrant prior to yesterday’s arraignment. Bail Conditions Justice Kekemeke granted bail in the sum of ₦100 million with one surety in like amount. The surety must be a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) with at least 20 years of practice or a legal practitioner with over 40 years of experience. The judge noted that the prosecution failed to provide compelling reasons to deny bail and that Mr. Turaki was not considered a flight risk. Remand to Kuje Despite bail being granted, Mr. Turaki was unable to immediately perfect the conditions – meaning he could not produce the required surety and documentation. Consequently, court officials ordered that he be taken into custody at the Kuje Correctional Facility, where he will remain until his bail conditions are fully met. Next Hearing The case has been adjourned to June 11, 2026, for the commencement of trial.

PRESS RELEASE APRIL 18, 2026 CLARIFICATION ON APPEAL FILED BY SENATOR SAMUEL ANYANWU. The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has taken note of media reports alleging that its National Secretary, Senator Samuel N. Anyanwu filed an appeal against a purported suspension. The Party categorically states that these reports are misleading and lack proper context. While it is true that Senator Anyanwu filed an appeal, it is important to clarify that the appeal was not against any suspension. The suit which was first initiated at the FCT High Court Abuja was a case filed to challenge the competence and proceedings of the Disciplinary Committee previously chaired by Mr. Tom Ikimi who has since left the PDP. It must be emphasized that the Tom Ikimi Disciplinary Committee merely recommended a suspension. This recommendation was never considered, adopted, or ratified by either the National Working Committee (NWC) or the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Party. As such, it had no binding effect, and no valid suspension existed at any time. Furthermore, the said Disciplinary Committee and its recommendations had long been jettisoned by the Party’s leadership after it was determined that the committee was constituted in violation of Chapter 10, Article 57(1) of the Party’s Constitution. Accordingly, there was no valid or effective suspension at any time. For the avoidance of doubt, the judgment of the FCT High Court delivered by Justice Halilu in January 2026 did not affirm any suspension, as that was never the issue before the court. The court dismissed the suit in its entirety for lack of jurisdiction, having ruled that disciplinary matters are internal affairs of the Party and therefore not justiciable. In light of these facts, the appeal, which was inadvertently filed on April 10th 2026, has now been directed to be immediately withdrawn as it is no longer necessary. It is also pertinent to note that Senator Anyanwu and others referenced in the misleading reports had successfully completed their tenure since last year. The PDP wishes to remind Nigerians that the Federal High Court in Ibadan, in a landmark judgment had earlier upheld the composition of the National Caretaker Committee and directed INEC to recognize it. Also, The Abuja National Convention held on March 29 and 30, 2026, was conducted with full legal backing, and in line with valid judgments of both the High Court and the Court of Appeal and was duly monitored by INEC. The PDP therefore urges media organizations to always verify and properly contextualize their reports before publication. The general public, party members, and stakeholders are advised to disregard the misleading reports in their entirety, as they are distortions of facts aimed at creating confusion. We wish to reassure Nigerians that the Party remains focused on rebuilding and repositioning itself to reclaim its rightful place come 2027. Signed. Hon. Jungudo Haruna Mohammed National Publicity Secretary

Strategic Reset: Why Anyanwu and Abdulrahman's Emergence Signals Strength for PDP The re-election of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, alongside the emergence of Abdulrahman as Chairman, represents more than just a routine leadership decision, it marks a defining moment of recalibration, unity, and forward-thinking within one of Nigeria's most influential political parties. At a time when political parties across the country are grappling with internal divisions and shifting loyalties, the PDP's decision reflects a conscious effort to consolidate experience with renewed leadership energy. Senator Anyanwu, widely respected for his grassroots connection and administrative competence, brings continuity and institutional memory to the role. His understanding of party dynamics, conflict resolution, and national political strategy positions him to strengthen internal cohesion. Over the years, Anyanwu has built a reputation as a loyal party man, one who understands the delicate balance between ambition and collective progress. His re-election is not just a reward for past service, but a vote of confidence in his ability to steer the party's engine room with discipline and clarity. In a role as critical as National Secretary, where organization, communication, and coordination are key, his steady hand is expected to be vital in repositioning the PDP ahead of future electoral contests. Equally significant is the emergence of Abdulrahman as Chairman. His leadership introduces a fresh dynamic, one that complements Anyanwu's experience with a forward-looking vision. Together, they form a leadership synergy that could redefine the party's internal structure and external appeal. While Anyanwu ensures stability and continuity, Abdulrahman represents the evolving face of the PDP, one that must adapt to new political realities and voter expectations. This combination of tested experience and emerging leadership could not have come at a better time. The PDP stands at a crossroads, needing to rebuild trust, energize its base, and present itself as a credible alternative on the national stage. With Anyanwu and Abdulrahman at the helm of its administrative and strategic arms, the party appears poised to embark on a new chapter of discipline, inclusiveness, and purposeful direction. Beyond personalities, this decision sends a broader message: that the PDP is willing to prioritize competence, loyalty, and unity over division. It signals to party members and supporters that stability is being restored, and that the leadership is committed to strengthening internal democracy while preparing for the challenges ahead. In the ever-evolving landscape of Nigerian politics, leadership choices often determine the trajectory of a party. By reaffirming Senator Samuel Anyanwu's position and ushering in Abdulrahman as Chairman, the PDP has made a bold statement one that speaks to resilience, strategic thinking, and a renewed commitment to national relevance. If effectively harnessed, this leadership alignment could mark the beginning of a political resurgence for the PDP, one built not just on ambition, but on structure, unity, and a clear vision for the future.
