Charlie Gard, British baby who was sentenced to death by a British court and whose plight drew sympathy from Pope Francis and US President Donald Trump and sparked a debate about medical ethics, died on Friday, his mother said.

His parents, Connie Yates and Chris Gard, had fought a lengthy legal battle to allow him to be taken to the United States for treatment for a rare genetic condition.

But despite the international attention brought by the terminally-ill baby’s case, he died exactly one week short of his first birthday.

“Our beautiful little boy has gone. We are so proud of you, Charlie,” his mother Yates said in a statement.

A court had ordered that the 11-month-old should be moved from hospital to a hospice, where his life support was withdrawn.

Supporters around the world donated £1.35 million ($1.75 million, 1.5 million euros) via an online fundraising site to support his parents and their efforts to keep their son alive, while 350,000 signed a petition demanding that he be allowed to receive experimental treatment in the US.

Following news of the boy’s death, Pope Francis, who supported the campaign, tweeted: “I entrust little Charlie to the Father and pray for his parents and all those who loved him.”

British Prime Minister Theresa May said she was “deeply saddened” by the death while US Vice President Mike Pence wrote he was: “Saddened to hear of the passing of Charlie Gard.”

– Mitochondrial disease –
Gard was born on August 4 last year with a rare form of mitochondrial disease that causes progressive muscle weakness, including in key organs such as the heart.

He was admitted to hospital at eight weeks old and his condition progressively deteriorated.

Gard’s parents fought a five-month legal battle for him to be taken to the United States for experimental treatment.

They lost a series of appeals in British courts and the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

Their campaign led to offers of help from the United States and the Vatican, leading the hospital to ask the courts for a final assessment of any new evidence.

On July 2, Pope Francis called for the couple to be allowed to “care for their child until the end”, saying he had followed the case with “affection and sadness”.

The following day, US President Donald Trump said in a tweet: “If we can help little Charlie Gard, as per our friends in the UK and the pope, we would be delighted to do so.”

But the boy’s parents gave up their battle last week, saying “time has run out”, after they were shown scans indicating that his condition had deteriorated too far.

“We are so sorry that we could not save you,” they said in an emotional statement at the High Court in London.

– ‘Agony’ –
Judge Nicholas Francis summed up the emotion involved in the case.

“It is impossible for any of us to comprehend or even begin to imagine the agony to which Charlie’s parents have been subjected in recent weeks and months as they have had to come to terms with the decision that they have now made,” he said in a judgement.

The parents then asked for Gard to be taken to their home for his final days but were overruled by the hospital which said the ventilator keeping him alive was too bulky to fit through their front door.

They finally agreed for him to be placed in a hospice.

The case raised fundamental questions about whether parents or the state should have a final say on a child’s wellbeing and whether a child’s fate should be settled in a courtroom.

It provoked strong reactions, with an army of supporters shouting “shame on GOSH” following this week’s court hearing.

The hospital issued a statement Friday, saying: “Everyone at Great Ormond Street Hospital sends their heartfelt condolences to Charlie’s parents and loved ones at this very sad time.”

Its not peculiar to Uniben. I paid N80k to during my M.Sc defence in Unical for thesame reason. That when the university release the money meant for the external examiner we would get a refund.

I felt like telling you sharaaap... but I had to control myself, Please don't be offended with my thoughts. UNIBEN's acceptance fees use to be 45k but now 65k. PG form use to be 12.5k but now 25k. School fees 100k and they'll stall you till you stay 3 years. 100k x 3 = 300k. The programme can be so protracted that you'll hate yourself. Since NUC has mandated that M.Sc programmes last maximum of 3 years, UNIBEN has made the 3 years the norm forgetting that M.Sc ought to be 1.5 - 2 years and the 3 years max should be an exception.

An 8-week-old baby has been sentenced to death by an European Human Rights Court.

The Court of Human Rights backed British doctors who reported the matter saying it would be kinder to let the ten month old die.

The court gave its verdict on a case of human rights that will compel a couple to allow their sick baby to die.

The parents of the baby, Chris Gard and Connie Yates have been in a long legal battle to save their baby, Charlie Gard, who is suffering from a serious genetic illness.

The baby is currently on life support while treatment options were being considered. At 8 weeks old, Charlie was diagnosed with mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome and is considered to be only one of 16 babies worldwide with this disease. His condition is progressive and currently incurable and eventually fatal.

Doctors are developing treatments for the various mitochondrial conditions, including the nucleoside treatment Charlie’s parents have been fighting for.

The baby’s parents prayed the court to determine if they, as parents, have the right to continue to provide medical treatments for their son or if he should be allowed to die

The parents of the 10-months old baby wants the court to let them use a potentially life-saving drug from the U.S. on their son. The Gards believe that the drug (which is still experimental), would help their son’s genetic condition rather than allow him to die as doctors have recommended.


However, a ruling yesterday by the court held that the application by the parents was “inadmissible.” The court said that the baby was being exposed to continued pain, suffering and distress in pursuit of treatments that were unsure. It added that any additional treatment would continue to cause harm to the baby, stressing that its ruling is “Final.”

The EHRC also removed the interim measure to keep Charlie’s life support in place.

A spokesman for Great Ormond Street Hospital, where Charlie has been treated since October, told the parents that there is “no rush” to remove Charlie’s life support, adding that “any future treatment will involve careful planning and discussion.”

The hospital has said that though there is a deadline in place for Charlie, they wouldn’t have to follow it exactly. The discussion and planning will take some days to work out.

Meanwhile, Charlie’s parents have so far raised over £1.3 million through a GoFundMe account for his treatment. With the ruling of the court, the parents are unsure what they want to do with the money.

They plan to donate some to the U.S. hospital willing to treat Charlie, while the rest will be put into a charity for other children with similar mitochondrial conditions, “so that nobody else ever has to go through what we have.”
