Nairaland / General / Re: Five Ways To Improve Teaching & Learning Process by Ajoboss(m): 12:25pm On Aug 06, 2019
BalogunIdowu:

Teaching and learning is the major aim of any school or institution. Every other thing attached are to make the process organized and put a proper strata or structure for all those involved in the process.

Teaching learning process is very important for both the teachers, glorified teachers (lecturers) and or instructors as the case may be with the learners.

While I was already thinking about penning this topic down, my institution (Lagos state university, LASU) organised a teaching evaluation session for her students in various campuses including the college of medicine. This is basically to help improve teaching and learning process by getting feedback from students. This is a step forward in improving a system that considers the teaching learning process to be at the top notch.

Therefore, i see my institution improving and hopefully being among the top universities in the country in years to come just like professor (facilitator) asserted. Without losing track of the topic, I bring to you five ways to improve teaching and learning process within the four walls of a class or without.

1. OVERVIEW BEFORE SPECIFICS: for each course or subject as the case may be, the tutor needs to give an overview of each topic or course before digging deep. After which s/he can dive into the topic in details. During an overview, the learners are exposed to the entire perspective of the topic which makes them able to conceptualise it as a whole. It is like seeing the final arrangement of a puzzle before it's been scattered and asked to rearrange to fit. Some teaching learning process lacks this and just burst into teaching the topic directly. This needs to be considered and observe how much it'll assist the process.

2. LEARNING OBJECTIVES/ENTRY BEHAVIOUR: Even though in premise were this are been reiterated, trust me, only few practice the gospel being preached. Entry behaviour is a way of introducing topic to make learners capture the message that is yet to be discussed. Entry behaviour can be from being quite abstract to being physical.
On the other hand, learning objectives is as important as what is intended to he discussed. Not every single part of learning is important and that's where the learning objective(s) comes in. Of about 10/15 headlines of a topic, maybe just 5/7 are what the learners really needs to understand and cannot claim to complete the topic without comprehending. Stating out the learning objectives will identify how important those points are and the tutor should take some time to make the learners understand.

3. EXPLANATION OF TERMS: One of the most common way to confuse a learner is to teach topics that have their own register without explaining what they mean or their relevance to what is being studied. Yeah I know some of us will assume "hey, the should have a dictionary" but then, they struggle to understand two things simultaneously, the terms and the topic as a whole. For instance, if I am to teach new sets of students anatomy class a particular topic, there are certain terms I'll most likely use that needs to be understood as much as the topic. This cuts across all and infact plays a very key roll in the teaching learning process.

4. SIMPLE TO COMPLEX: "even the most simple things are complex in their own way" indigenousGenius.
For instance, if I begin to classify organisms and mention bacteria as being a prokaryote. As simple as I have mentioned "bacteria" as an example studying the world of bacteria (bacteriology) on its own. Therefore, tutors need to realise learners needs to be able to connect and relate what they have been taught. Building from simple to complex makes them understands the importance of the whole procedure. Sometimes, we can say known to unknown.

5. TEACHING TECHNIQUES/ REWARD SYSTEM: The style of delivery of a subject matter is as important as how much it'll be understood at least largely by the audience. We can all relate this from our classroom or session experience.
Reward system should be encouraged and as much as possible perhaps per topic matter. This will make student try as much as possible to be at their best knowing this. This will be a personal discretion of the teacher which should be purposeful!

I hope these five points will help benefit the teaching learning process. As much as this may be centred on the tutors, I'll come up with the learners part soon. Hope you enjoyed coming around, stay tuned!

Petlizjudith:
"NEVER FALL INTO THE TRAP OF COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHERS,EVERYONE IS FIGHTING SILENT BATTLES WE KNOW NOTHING ABOUT,AND NO ONE HAS FULLY ARRIVED''-Leslie Tucker

If you compare yourself to others, you may become vain and bitter, there will always be greater and lesser persons than yourself.Stop comparing yourself to other people, you could go further if you focused on your own unique gifts rather than getting stuck on what others do better than you. It's time to stop comparing and start doing ,you got where you are today on your own merit,so you don't need to worry about anyone else.
You are not them, comparing yourself to others means you compare what you see in others to what you know about yourself.Things always look better from the outside than they do from the inside, people often put up a good front, making themselves look better to the world than they feel inside.

Life is enough, stop comparing yourself to others, enjoy your life without comparing it with that of another. If you took the strengths of others and compared them to your weaknesses, how do you think you'd size up?,do you think it will make you feel good?.
When we focus on other people,we lose time that we could otherwise invest in ourselves.Instead of wasting time comparing your path to someone else's,spend it investing, creating, and caring for yourself.

You have to accept where you are because you can't change something you don't acknowledge, don't resist or fight where and what you are, come to peace with it,say yes to every part of your life and from that place, make decisions that will move you in the right direction.
Your life might have being messy and bumpy,it might have being colored by mistakes, anxiety and fear. But all those things were catalysts to help you become a better, wiser and more courageous version of yourself. So embrace your story and how much you have grown from it.

We tend to compare our behind the scenes with someone else's big moment,we tend to focus on their success, not on the thousands of hours they have spent preparing and working for their achievement.Instead of letting other people's triumphs be a time to get down on yourself, let it be a door opener to possibilities.Let it be an inspiration for what you can be,do and have in life.
Comparing yourself to people ain't sexy at all,it brings nothing but negativity and lack of self esteem, and it's never usually a productive or positive thing to do.

Crime / Re: The 10yrs Old Orphan That Was Dumped At Hospital Has Finally Given Birth by Ajoboss(m): 10:20am On Aug 06, 2019
Aliyutani:
10-year-old orphan was dumped at a hospital in Benue state while experiencing labour pains and the child has now given birth after having to undergo Caesarean section due to the small size of her pelvis.
According to Chigozie Effe who shared the news on Facebook, the child named Masenengen Targba was dumped at General Hospital Markurdi located at Northbank by an unknown person in the early hours of Sunday, August 4, 2019.
She was in so much pain as it was time to have her baby, but surgery needed to be carried out and she could not afford it.
Upon interrogation, it was discovered that she is an orphan from Tiv in Benue state, but has been living in an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp located in Benue State. It is in the camp that she was raped and impregnated.
Eventually, a Good Samaritan named Mr Ukan took her to Foundation Memorial Hospital, Makurdi, Benue State, where Dr Ijoko and Dr Yima carried out an operation to deliver her of her daughter in the early hours of today, August 5.
The identity of the man who got the child pregnant is still unknown but it was gathered that Masenengen was raped multiple times before she took in.

I can't believe that on a Nigerian reality show, Nigerians are voting for someone that isn't even Nigerian and doesn't even live in Nigeria.

I can't believe Nigerians are wasting their money voting for someone that didn't even care about Nigeria until he realized that his career as an athlete was dead and decaying. He knew he didn't have the talent or youth to compete with the top high jumpers in the Great Britain team, and he knew that the Jamaican high jump team was already suffused with talent, something he didn't have, so he looked unto Nigeria, a place known by everyone in the entire Western world as a dumping ground for the mediocre and the rejected.

Mike has never given a fuçk about Nigeria prior to now. It only now that his brand is heading into extinction that he decided to exploit our excessive obsession with anything foreign, for his selfish benefit.

And what is the main commodity of his brand anyway? Cigarettes. So after not caring about Nigeria for all of his life, and having never done any philanthropic work in Nigeria, he wants to come to Nigeria to market cigarettes to our youths and we are helping him fulfill this dangerous and inimical mission?

If Nigerians give this opportunist this price money, then we have proved ourselves to be the ignorant morons that most people in the Western world see us as.

Anyone can win this show, but not Mike. I'm not even saying you should vote for Tacha. Just vote anyone else that isn't Mike. Vote for Mercy, Vote for Frodd, Vote for Sirdee, Vote for Seyi, you can even Vote for Ike, but don't vote for Mike. He is an opportunist who doesn't really care about Nigeria and has never cared about Nigeria, and is only exploiting his biological attachment to Nigeria for selfish reasons.

You should try to interact with people though, especially the ones you sit beside in class, you can work it up from there. For me it more has to do with keeping the people I meet as casual acquaintances. I don't mind being friendly with people, but I really value my alone time and being quiet in general.

Usually when people want to get to know you and you open up, it will lead to longer conversations with them in the future, basically more time spent talking which drains your battery. Especially nowadays where I don't have as much time alone as I used to. I feel more of a need to withdraw and keep to myself. It's a bit tiring passing through the street and kicking off a conversation with X amount of people you happen to bump into. I try to save my social energy for people I really want to engage with and where it doesn't feel like a drain to talk to them. Unfortunately, people might take that the wrong way, but I have to think about myself too and I know that if I don't get time to myself, I'll be in a really bad way.
