PoliticsNigeria's Population Now 168m, Hits 221m In 2020 by ak47mann(op): 4:19pm On Oct 27, 2011
The National Population Commission (NPC) has said the country’s population has risen from the 140,431,790 it was five years ago when the last national headcount was taken, to 167,912,561 as at yesterday. This represents an annual population growth rate of 5.6 million people.

Chairman of NPC, Samu'ila Danko Makama, who made the disclosure at a valedictory press briefing of the board of the commission in Abuja, said of this figure, 82,098,001 are females, while males account for 85,814,560.

He also said given the agency’s new projection of the country’s population growth with an assessment of 3.2 per cent rate, “the same rate the NPC used in 1991 and 2006”, Nigeria’s population would hit 221,392,163 by July 1, 2020.

Makama said: “This means that Nigeria contributes 2.4 per cent of the seven billion people which the world population would hit on October 31, 2011.”

Giving account of the money spent on the 2006 population census, he said, of the N37 billion which was expended on the exercise, 48 per cent was provided by the European Union (EU), while the remainder of 52 per cent was provided by the Federal Government.

Speaking on the implication of the population growth of Nigeria, Makama said it was imperative that the necessary framework be put in place by the NPC and other stakeholders to accommodate the rate.

He particularly cautioned that the population explosion could lead to a higher rate of unemployment and poverty among Nigerians.

“It is necessary that we start to space our children. Yes, children are provided by God, but we also have to plan for them,” he said.

Lauding the 2006 census exercise, Makama said many African countries were currently utilising the experience of some of the NPC officials to conduct their demographic survey.

“The 2006 census was the biggest statistical exercise in Africa, and the eight biggest in the world. It was acclaimed by local and foreign bodies as credible and one of the best the country ever had. But because some people always choose to have predetermined minds on population issues, it was criticised by some Nigerians,” he added.

He noted that one of the major challenges faced by the commission was the issue of funding, while conceding that there had been improvement in recent years.

The commission now has 2,733 registration centres across the country with at least three in every local government area, he said.

Makama and 20 of the federal commissioners’ tenure would end on October 31, this year.

dayokanu:
There are a total of 631,178 students in Ogun state, Divided by 2billion makes it an average of 3,168 per student. This sounds very fair and logical to me.

If they ask individual parent to buy books needed for school, Do you think each parent would spend less than that to buy the required books?
am not saying is not a good thing just wondering if that 2billion can be utilized well,in that 2billion some politicians will get cut from it.
That is the problem with nigeria, someone told me that his state governor takes 20% from any contract given to you, and it will not end there his permanent secretaries will get their cut too.
By the time it reaches the common man 40% of the money is gone through bribery and corruption cool

This is not a France war.Its Kenya who took the battle to somalia and teamed up with the Somalia Transitional forces plus AU forces.
The US army based in Djibouti(their HQ) has been providing logistical support to help flush them out.
The somalia waters are patrolled by the French Navy ships. This is where they come in because they are trying to block all routes the elshababs use.Elshabab are an arm of alqaeda. That is not a secret or mystery. And do not even think its composed of somalis only.
Those guys are soo ruthless.
Kenya the other day arrested 2 britons belonging to the group. 100 alqaeda members are from US.The rest from Aghanistan,Kenya etc.
The US ,France are not on the forefront of this battle! Infact they said Kenya caught them unawares. And Kenya said they do not need the foreign forces to defend their territory. Provocation came from somalia and Kenya has tolerated their nonsense for long.It was time to act because almost one third of somalia pop lives in Kenya. The poor in Dadaab camp while the rich own estates and property in NBO eastleigh( mini somalia).
you are right!!! here is the evidence

Politics200 Acn Supporters Defect To Pdp In Ekiti by ak47mann(op): 3:14am On Oct 25, 2011
No fewer than 200 members of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Ise/Orun Local Government Area of Ekiti State have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The former ACN members were led into the PDP by a chieftain of the party in the council area, Mr Tope Jegede, at a ceremony in Ise-Ekiti, at the weekend.

The defection, which took place at the town square, close to the palace of the Arinjale of Ise-Ekiti, Oba Ayodele Ajayi, was witnessed by chieftains and supporters of the PDP in Ekiti State, including the state chairman of the party, Chief Bola Olu-Ojo.

Jegede condemned the ACN-led administration in the state for what he said was “poor performance in its first year in office, and rated the immediate past administration of Chief Segun Oni better in terms of performance within the same period in office.

The about 200 members and supporters of ACN, who dumped the party for the PDP, alleged that they were abandoned by the ACN leadership in the implementation of projects since it assumed office on October 16, 2010.

Another ACN chief, who also dumped the party, Chief Lawrence Ajimotin, said his defection was as a result of the refusal of some ACN chieftains in power to help them construct township roads and farmstead roads in their local government, Ise/Orun, alleging that the pleas were ignored.

He claimed that he travelled to the state capital, Ado-Ekiti, on many occasions to complain to the leadership of the party about the feelings of members and supporters of the party, adding that nothing positive was done to ameliorate the sufferings of the people in his council.

Chief Ajimotin said “ACN has been deceiving us long time ago, but we are out of slavery now. They didn’t attend to our yearnings, even grading of roads to our farmsteads. We are ready to help PDP boot the ACN out of power in the state in the next election.”

The defectors burned the broom, the logo of the ACN, at the ceremony, to show their rejection of the party.
