PoliticsReps Intervene In Capital Oil, Amcon Feud by ak47mann(op): 3:47am On Dec 04, 2012
THE House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum has intervened in the raging feud between Capital Oil and Gas Limited and the Asset Management Company of Nigeria(AMCON) which is threatening to ignite another round of fuel scarcity in the country.

The Nigerian Tribune has confirmed that the House Committee will on Thursday sit on a petition written by Capital Oil in respect of the findings of the Presidential Committee on Fuel Subsidy, headed by Mr Aig-Imoukhuede and the ongoing battle between the company and AMCON.

Capital Oil controls 35 per cent of Nigeria’s fuel imports, making it the leading fuel marketer in the country.

It was gathered that Capital Oil took its case to the Speaker of the House of Representatives two weeks ago, following what it considered as subterranean moves to take over the operations through collusion with some government officials.

In the petition to the House of Representatives, a copy of which was obtained by the Nigerian Tribune, Capital Oil said it is seeking the intervention of the House in redressing “the various injustices being meted out to it. Some of these are serious breach of fundamental human rights, gross misrepresentation, suppression and concealment of material facts, threat to life of its CEO, Chief Ifeanyi Uba, as well as infringement and gross violations of banking rules.”

The petition specifically asks the House to carefully look at the report of the Presidential Committee on Fuel Subsidy, which recommended Capital Oil and Gas for further investigation without due process.

Capital Oil is also seeking the House’s intervention in checking what it called “collusion, connivance and conspiracy to destabilise its operations by agencies of government and individuals.

Spokesman for the company, Mr Nick Hayes, who justified the decision to approach the House for succour said that the decision of Chief Ubah to approach the House of Representatives shows that the company has nothing to hide.

He also said that the petition will afford discerning Nigerians the opportunity to see through the plot by some highly placed persons to foist artificial scarcity on the people during the yuletide.

“The company is confident that the House will (given it’s integrity and sense of purpose), handle the matter in a way that hidden truths would be revealed,” he said.

http://hmrc.presscentre.com/Press-Releases/Manchester-duo-sentenced-for-tax-and-benefit-fraud-67dde.aspx

A man and his ex-wife from Manchester were sentenced for tax credits and benefits fraud at the city’s Crown Court yesterday. Nigerian Anthony Ojo, from Gorton, and Kemi Saidu, from Audenshaw had also admitted fraud and immigration offences at a previous hearing.

Ojo, a former security officer for HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), was dismissed when his crimes were uncovered.

Speaking after the sentencing Ian Horridge, Senior Manager, HMRC said:

“People who commit tax credits fraud should be warned – we are increasing our efforts into identifying and investigating cheats. The public expects HMRC employees to act with integrity. Only the tiniest minority of our staff commit fraud but we deal decisively in such cases.”

The court heard that Ojo’s marriage to Saidu in Nigeria in December 2007 is believed to have been a ‘marriage of convenience’. Saidu lived with him only briefly, or not at all on their arrival in the UK. However Ojo, who is now the holder of a British passport, began claiming tax credits in December 2008 as part of a joint application with Saidu. He also under-declared his earnings to increase the amount of money he received.

Later, Ojo submitted a single tax credits claim, and continued to claim as a single person even when his new partner moved in. He continued to lie about his income, and claimed child benefit for two children that he had no responsibility for. In just over two years Ojo fraudulently claimed £22,400 he knew he wasn’t entitled to.

On moving to the UK, Nigerian Kemi Saidu was subject to immigration control and therefore not entitled to tax credits or child benefit. However, she submitted a joint tax credits application and a separate child benefit claim for three children, two of whom didn’t live with her.

After leaving Ojo, Saidu immediately moved in with another partner but submitted a claim for tax credits as a single person. In two and a half years she fraudulently claimed £27,888.

In addition to tax credits and benefits fraud, both Ojo and Saidu allowed third parties to use their names and national insurance numbers in order to work illegally in the UK. And despite claiming tax credits as a single person, in 2011 Saidu applied to the Home Office for leave to remain in the UK on the basis of her ‘marriage’ to Ojo, which he supported. As a result of this action, both were charged with immigration offences.

At Manchester Crown Court yesterday (Thursday 26 July) Anthony Opeyemi Ojo was sentenced to a total of two years imprisonment for the offences. Kemi Kudirat Saidu was sentenced to a total of 12 months in jail suspended for two years and given a 150-hour community work order. In court it was explained that her immigration status will be determined separately and that this conviction may be taken into account.

Notes to editors

2. Ojo was employed by HMRC in March 2009, and dismissed in December 2011.

3. Ojo and Saidu entered guilty pleas at Manchester Crown Court on 12 June 2012.

The president has been to Anambra two time in 1 yr just to commission prjects. Has he come to your state since he he became president to commission even if it is sand? Its because there is nothing to commission. Nwokem grow up.

Odenigbo Aroli: I am not the same village as him in Umuoji; He is from Uruegbe and I'm from Urumkpu but he doesn't live more than 20 mins from ogbe. We call him "Onwanetiliora" or "ekwoba". He made his money in Cameroun before relocating to Nigeria. He bought all the transformers that supplied Umuoji light in the late 70's. He is late now and he also tarred the Ekwoba road. He was very wealthy.

Nightshift: I know Anambra State more than you. I can mimic Njikoka dialect more than an Abagana man. My very good friend is from Enugu-Agidi. I grew up in Aba, schooled in Enugu and have successful business relatives at Onitsha Ado n'ide. Charlie Nnewi(Silas works Rd.) was the first Michelin Tires Ambassador in Onitsha, was a family friend. He was receiving 5 tires truck load(a week) from Michelin Co. Port-Harcourt in the 80s/early 90s. My family was actively involved @ Silas works Rd. No Igboman on Nairaland know Igboland more than me. I mean the towns and differences in cultures and dialects. Onye ka i bu?
Guy, the charlie you are talking about use to play table tennis with me when ever he visit my pops back in the days,i know him very well i know how he got the contract with french company then, with Michelin tires. Is a small world, see charlie onyido! he is the only son,i saw his business expand to multi-billion naira enterprise, everybody in my house was impressed, especially my pops, cuz he husstle hard with the link he got he didn't mess up with the opportunity, sorry to interrupt you though.

i just remembered him back then,me as a child, charlie with his white polo shirt and short we will be playing tennis together.Let me stop here...just wana let u no is a small world.... cool
