Crime / Orji Uzor Kalu And The Seven Other Politicians With ₦232bn Corruption Cases by AkachiNwog: 8:54pm On Sep 01, 2018
ORJI UZOR KALU AND SEVEN OTHER POLITICIANS WITH N232BN CORRUPTION CASES WORKING FOR BUHARI'S RE-ELECTION

At least eight out of the politicians working for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari in the February 2019 election have pending corruption cases worth N232bn, checks by Saturday PUNCH have revealed.

Investigation by our correspondents showed that the amount involved in the various graft cases, which are currently pending before security agencies, especially the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, range from N223m to N100bn for each of the politicians.

Some of the eight politicians, who used to be members of the Peoples Democratic Party and other opposition parties, had allegedly defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress to stop the dangling axe of the EFCC and other security agencies from falling on them.

Specifically, the politicians who are currently either under probe or prosecution for allegedly diverting government funds have separately vowed to ensure Buhari remains in power untill 2023.

The eight politicians include the senator representing Nasarawa West at the National Assembly, Abdullahi Adamu; the senator representing Sokoto North and former Governor of Sokoto State, Aliyu Wamakko; ex-Senate Minority Leader and former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio, who recently defected from the PDP to the APC; and a former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu.

Others are the immediate past Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal; the former Governor of Rivers State and Director-General of the Buhari Campaign Organisation in 2015, Rotimi Amaechi; the Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari; and former National Chairman of the PDP, Ali Modu Sheriff.

Abdullahi Adamu (N15bn)

For instance, Adamu, a serving senator and former Governor of Nasarawa State, is one of the President’s allies in the Senate. He is also a member of the National Advisory Committee of the Buhari 2019 Presidential Support Committee.

The lawmaker is being prosecuted alongside 18 others for allegedly stealing N15bn from the treasury through contracts awarded when he was governor for eight years.

His son, Nurianu, was also arraigned by the EFCC in January 2018 for alleged N90m fraud. However, the former governor has been one of the fiercest critics of Senate President Bukola Saraki.

According to Saraki, the former governor has been insulting him in order to get a soft landing.

Saraki had said in July, “I have deliberately ignored the antics of Senator Abdullahi Adamu, especially his constant media attacks on me and the Senate since the EFCC dusted his file on alleged case of corruption and also went ahead to arraign his son in court.”

Aliyu Wamakko (N15bn)

Senator Aliyu Wamakko is in charge of Buhari’s campaign in Sokoto State. A few weeks ago, he held a massive rally on behalf of Buhari in order to prove to the President that Governor Aminu Tambuwal’s defection would be of no effect.

Wamakko, who served as governor from 2007 to 2015, is under investigation over allegations of theft of public funds and money laundering totalling N15bn, an allegation he has vehemently denied.

Spokesperson for the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, had confirmed in April that the commission was investigating allegations contained in a petition against Wammako and that he would soon be invited to defend the allegations.

Godswill Akpabio (N100bn)

The former governor of Akwa Ibom State has been under probe by the EFCC for over three years based on allegations that he diverted over N100bn from the coffers of the state between 2007 and 2015.

Akpabio was welcomed into the APC by the President himself.

The former governor, who represents Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District, recently vowed that the APC would take over Akwa Ibom the way Adolph Hitler invaded Poland.

Akpabio, who on Friday travelled to China with the President is arguably the closest defector to Buhari and has vowed to do everything possible to ensure Buhari is re-elected.

Although he has been grilled by the EFCC, he has not been charged.

Orji Uzor Kalu (N3.2bn)

Kalu, who governed Abia State from 1999 to 2007, was one of the most influential politicians in the South-East during his time in government. After leaving the PDP, he formed the Progressive Peoples Alliance from where he contested and lost a senatorial election in 2015.

The following year, he defected to the APC and has paid several visits to the President since then.

Recently, he visited the President in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, where he was bestowed with the title, ‘Dan Baiwan Hausa’ by the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Farouq.

According to the emir, Kalu was bestowed with the title in appreciation of his “unwavering support for our son, President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, Bayajida II .”

However, the former governor has been having a running legal battle with the EFCC since leaving office.

The EFCC alleged that Kalu and the others committed fraud between August 2001 and October 2005. It accused Kalu of utilising his company (Slok Nigeria Limited) to retain in the account of First Inland Bank, now First City Monument Bank, the sum of N200m.

The commission said that the sum formed part of funds illegally derived from the coffers of the Abia State government. The EFCC also said that the accused retained, in different bank accounts, about N2.5bn belonging to the state government, adding that he diverted about N3.2bn from the coffers of the same government.

Regardless of his travails, the former governor has insisted that he will do all within his power to ensure that Buhari is re-elected.

Babachir Lawal (N223m)

The immediate past Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, was accused by the Senate ad hoc Committee on Mounting Humanitarian Crisis in the North-East, led by Senator Shehu Sani, of awarding a N223m consultancy contract for the removal of invasive plant species in Komadugu, Yobe Water Channels to his company, Rholavision Engineering in contravention of Section 43(iii) and (iv) of the Public Procurement Act 2007.

A committee headed by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo subsequently investigated Lawal and recommended his dismissal in October 2017, a year after he was indicted by the Senate.

Although he is under probe by the EFCC, Babachir is among the key figures running Buhari’s re-election campaign in Adamawa State. He also revealed during a recent interview on Channels Television that he still had direct access to the President.

The former SGF has been having a leadership tussle with Governor Jibrilla Bindow over who should lead Buhari’s campaign in the state.

Rotimi Amaechi (N97bn)

Amaechi, who was the Director-General of the Buhari Campaign Organisation in 2015, has been charged with the task of ensuring that Buhari is elected a second time.

L-R: Kalu, Sheriff, Lawal and Amaechi
The Minister of Transport, who is the face of the Buhari campaign, was indicted by the Justice George Omeregi-led Rivers State Judicial Commission of Inquiry set up to investigate the sale of state assets.

He and others were accused of allegedly misappropriating N97bn through the sale of the state valued assets.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, had alleged that $150m (N30bn at the time) was spent on Buhari’s campaign in 2015.

Amaechi challenged his indictment but lost at the Appeal Court. Although anti-graft agencies have refused to state if he is under investigation or not, he has yet to clear his name and is still under investigation by the state government.

The Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Emma Okah, insisted that Amaechi was not cleared by the panel that indicted him on the sale of some assets belonging to the state.

Also, a top official at the Government House in Port Harcourt, pointed out that at the last count on the matter, the former governor had gone to the Supreme Court.

An appeal filed by Amaechi against the Justice George Omereji-led panel was in May 2017 dismissed by the Appeal Court in Port Harcourt.

Sports / Enyimba Stadium: Another Legacy By Ikpeazu by AkachiNwog: 4:21pm On Sep 01, 2018
Enyimba Stadium: Another Legacy by Ikpeazu

Ebere Uzoukwa

The uncommon determination of Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu to fix and remodel Abia, the God's Own State, is fast yielding results. The uncommon governor has no doubt surmounted obstacles and dismantled clogs in the wheels of progress as he doggedly champions revolutionary programmes that are turning Abia to a modern-model state.

When the governor embarked on the reconstruction of Enyimba International Stadium, Aba, many especially the opposition doubted his sincerity of purpose. The opposition descended and criticized him without recourse to the social and economic gains associated with sports especially globally. Without relenting, Dr. Ikpeazu showed an exemplary commitment in his avowed bid to deliver a world class and internationally rated football stadium for Enyimba Football Club of Aba.

Prior to the novelty match and ceremony that heralded the official re-opening of the stadium a few days ago, the commissioner for Information in Abia State, Chief John Okiyi Kalu, in discharge of his duties, gave an insight to the stadium project after touring the facility with a team of sports journalists.

As reported by News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the commissioner disclosed that the installation of the new turf cost the state government a whopping one million euros (about N450,000,000). The contract, according to him, was awarded to a Yenagoa-based Monimichelle Group.

Okiyi mentioned other components of the contract to include the construction of tartan tracks and re-roofing of the spectator stands, FIFA approved modeled goal posts and nets, 32 public toilets at the facility and four additional entrance/exit gates to bring the total number to 12.

“For the first time in the history of the stadium, public toilets are being provided for spectators. Before now, people usually littered the surroundings of the stadium with faeces, especially on match days", the commissioner said.

Recall that Enyimba FC also known as the People’s Elephant had relocated to the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar in 2016 for all their home matches in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) and CAF competitions to give way for total reconstruction, remodeling and upgrading of the stadium by Dr. Ikpeazu-led administration.

Enyimba FC, the only Nigeria’s team left in the continental campaign this season received a major boost ahead of Wednesday's CAF Confederation Cup Group C decider against CARA Brazzaville of Congo following a meritorious approval after the recent inspection visit carried out by CAF officials. The People's Elephant won that crucial match to triumphantly announce their return to Aba stadium.

Before the crucial match, Enyimba Coach, Usman Abdallah, named as replacement following the sudden departure of Paul Aigbogun midway into their campaign reportedly showed enthusiasm of his boys progressing to the quarter-final.

“It is positive development for us because it would be better playing at our home ground in Aba, though it will be the first time for some of our new players in the team.

“We are not going to be under pressure against CARA especially after the important away victory against Djoliba last week. I’m optimistic of a positive result in Aba,” the former Kano Pillar gaffer enthused.

Beyond sports development, Abia State government under Dr. Ikpeazu has enlisted infrastructural transformation that cut across the 3 senatorial districts of the state to demonstrate his good intention to the good people of Abians.

Within the period under review, Dr. Ikpeazu has constructed and completed over 67 road projects. These include Kamalu Road, Ukaegbu Road, Umuola Road, Umuocham Road, Umule Road, Ommene Drive, Jubilee Road, Ehi Road, Hospital Road, Ube Street, Adazi Street, George’s Street, Echefu Road, ENUCRoad, St. Michael's Road, Azikiwe Road, Pound Road, Owerrinta Road, Weeks Road, Park Road, School Road, East Road and Okwunauka Road.

Others are Cameroun Road, Queens Road, Ehere Road, Umuojima Road, Umuojima-Owerrinta Road with Spur from Owerrinta to Umuocheala, Bata-Railway Crossing to Brass Junction, Ibadan Road, AharanduRoad, Onyebuchi Road, Umuehleigbu Road, Asphalt Overlay of dualized Aba Owerri Road, Ovom Road, Mosque Street, Umuatako Road, Asa Umuka-Ugwunagbo Obohia Junction Road, Owerri Road off Okigwe Road, Chima Nwafor Road and Mbawsi-Umuala Road in Isialangwa North LGA.

The governor has repeatedly promised with commitment to ensure that all ongoing road projects littered in Aba and other parts of the state are completed on record time.

This is as the governor's entrepreneurial agenda vis-a-vis the Made-in-Aba Campaign has gainfully unlocked and created several business opportunities for producers in Aba. About N3b direct orders and requisition to Aba that created additional employment and engagement of more than one million employees and apprentices in the over 300,000 markets around the state have lifted the economy of the state.

Dr. Ikpeazu has equally extended his Midas touch to Ariaria International Market as his government collaborates with the Federal Government to install an Independent Power Project financed by Rural Electrification Agency (REA). The Power Project has provided an uninterrupted power at the market to 2,000 shops on a pilot basis while another Power Station is constructed to capture another 34,000 shops.

He also pioneers Africa's first Institutional Tele-Health Support Initiative which expands healthcare delivery to rural areas thus enhancing the knowledge, attitude, practice and skills of the local healthcare workers.

With the few listed and other achievements to his credit, Dr. Ikpeazu has moved Abia, thge God's Own State, to the region of fast developing states in Nigeria.

Politics / Orji Kalu, A Political Marauder And A Shameless Failure by AkachiNwog: 6:17am On Aug 11, 2018
ORJI KALU A POLITICAL MARAUDER AND A SHAMELESS FAILURE.

I have always restrained myself from discussing or even reacting to issues raised by the former governor of Abia state Chief Orji Kalu because as much as we know him he is nothing but an attention seeker and an opportunist, but each time I read or listen to him speak, I see through him a man who lacks shame and decency, recently I read where Orji Kalu was addressing fellow APC members and in his usual rabble-rousing and unguarded manner of talking he said governor Ikpeazu is being remote controlled by Chinedu Orji, while I am fully aware that nobody takes Orji Kalu seriously having been known in the country’s political circles as a busy body and a political liability to every political party that identifies with him and he displays his shamelessness by utilizing every little opportunity to display his nuisancy.
It is however instructive that Orji Kalu be reminded that Abia is in safe hands with Dr. Ikpeazu and that we are no longer in the era of mamacracy and Okija shrine politics of 1999-2007, when his mother will sit down in her Nweke street residence, dish out instructions and direct activities in government house Umuahia.

When his family takes every government appointee to Okija shrine for fetish oath taking, incase you are still living in the past be reminded that Abians are happy with Ochendo because he has delivered Abia from the spiritual bondage Orji kalu’s family had put the state in.

Just may be Orji Kalu still thinks that Abians have forgotten in a hurry what he and his mother made us go through and that we are still living in the era of people controlling governments from outside, those days are gone and we are happier without them.

I will advise Orji Kalu to go and prepare for the jail time awaiting him for corruption because God in heaven and Abians have not forgiven them for what they made us pass through and how they turned Abia into a personal estate before God intervened through Senator T. A. Orji and rescued Abia from their wicked grip and today Abia is better off without them.

His excellency may be you have lost touch with reality having become a serial election loser, let me nudge you back to reality, Honourable Engineer Chinedum Orji is the majority leader of the Abia State House of Assembly and he is very busy genuinely assisting the government of Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu on how to succeed and make Abia a better place and to that effect they are succeeding and Abians happier without your family, we are also aware of all your labourious attempts aimed at getting your hands back at the treasury of the state but Abians are wiser and smarter and God in heaven will never allow you to succeed in this your evil political expedition.

Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu the days of remote controlling Abia from the confines a fetish shrine in Okija Anambra state is over, Senator T. A Orji has led the state back to God and God is the one controlling affairs in Abia state of today.

Politics / Has Orji Uzor Kalu Apologized To Abians? by AkachiNwog: 12:23pm On Aug 04, 2018
HAS ORJI UZOR KALU APOLOGIZED TO ABIANS?

Ikechukwu Iroha.

I read the news article credited to the frmer Governor of Abia State, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu, wherein he accused the incumbent Governor of Abia State Dr.Okezie Ikpeazu of not being in charge of his government. OUK went ahead to mention that Ikpeazu still pays attention to Chief T.A.Orji who influences his decision. He also said that President Buhari has built more roads in Nigeria than the State Government.

By a mere glance through the heading, you will know it was written by someone who is trying hard to impress some persons in APC to be allowed to enjoy his loot that was stolen from Abia purse. There is no known agenda order than attack so as to score some political points.

Have you wondered why OUK's boisterous attribute comes alive each time he is reminded by the court that his #7.2 billion fraud is still pending in their rooms. He must always speak to be noticed and pardoned by the EFCC arm of the APC.

For those that lived in Abia during the time of Chief Orji Uzor Kalu, his petty attention seeking diatribe wouldn't get any attention whatsoever but for the unsuspecting public who may read the news innocently, may be pushed to have an iota of believe.

While it is his stock-in-trade to lie and dish out every concoction against his perceived enemies, it is important OUK is reminded that his show of shame should not go beyond the former Governor Chief T.A.Orji whose only sin was to refuse to be controlled by the powerful diabolical Orji's dynasty.

To make it clear, Ikpeazu is the Governor of Abia State, he is in charge of the Government and Abians do not have any doubt about it. Abians know the truth about Ikpeazu's strides in developing infrastructure in the State. Ikpeazu has successfully built and commissioned over 60 roads in Abia with many at their different level of completion.

Some of the roads attributed to Dr. Ikpeazu in Abia State are Federal roads that fail to get the attention of the Presidency. Aba road Umuahia, Aba/Owerri road in Aba and Port Harcourt roads are Federal roads that the State government is handling, having considered them too important to the overall success of our made in Aba drive and even development of the State.

Instead of lying to appeal to public sympathy, OUK should use his loquacious tactics to talk to his friends in APC and Federal Government to pay more attention to most of our federal projects in Abia. Irrespective of party affiliations, Abians will appreciate the Federal Government once  roads like Umuahia-Ikotekpene road, Umuahia-Bende- Ohafia road, Ohafia-Arochukwu road, Aba-Ikotekpene road etc are remembered. OUK should also use his contacts to tell NDDC to improve on the quality of road projects in Abia.

Abians are comfortable with the standard deployed by the People's Governor Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, which comes with drainage and Stone base. OUK has forgotten that it was Ikpeazu that controlled flooding in Aba with his method of building wide drainage and deployment of the celebrated Cement technology that has a lasting life span of over 30 years.

It was Dr. Ikpeazu that rebuilt the Enyimba stadium that he (OUK) fenced and painted without considering building a single toilet in the Stadium. A walk to the Stadium will put shame on his face only that the aim is not to shame him but to remind him that Governor Ikpeazu emphasize more on standard. OUK on the other hand should show Abians any road he built that is still standing.

Abians can not be hoodwinked by OUK's pettiness and desperation in the name of patriotism. It is very obvious that OUK is not happy with the success Ikpeazu is recording in Abia which are testaments of his purposeful leadership.

While OUK is basking in the euphoria of acute Iberiberism, the Federal Government recently awarded Ikpeazu the best in terms of building the economy through MSME. The Vice President Prof.Yemi Osinbajo has not failed to announce his admiration for the young vibrant Governor at any fora.

Is it not also surprising that an Orji Uzor Kalu is talking about control and influence? I think the basic reason is because OUK thinks Abians do not have healthy strong memories. It was during OUK's regime that the office of  'Mother Excellency' was introduced in Abia. We are yet to forget that aspect of his administration where every appointee must get Mama's affirmative nod before anything is approved. I know Orji Uzor is talking from experience as someone that was never in charge of his government but he goofed because Ikpeazu is not OUK and will never be.

Each time an article is credited to OUK, I strive to read between the lines to see where an apology is given to Abians for his bad Agboroish and purposeless leadership he offered even when our neighboring States were enjoying dividends of good governance.

Has Orji Uzor Kalu apologized to Abians for labeling Pensioners 'Dead Woods' when he could not pay their pensions of which the State Government under the good leadership of Dr. Ikpeazu is tackling and will surely bring a lasting solution to make sure there will be no time in history our pensioners are insulted the way OUK did.

OUK should not forget in a hurry that Abians still remember his inglorious days as a Governor of Abia, which was characterized by pettiness, diabolism, lack of direction, building of substandard projects, bribery and corruption etc. It was during this time that words like Okija Shrine, Igba Egusi, Mama Nweke...were introduced into our lexicon.

In a saner clime, when somebody like OUK who has been a Governor of Abia State mounts a podium, he should be talking about how to develop the State. Though such line of discussion may sound strange to many Abians since there is no project anywhere that could be attributed to his regime that is still standing till date owing to his method of using wheelbarrow and shovel to construct roads with the help of his unregistered money syphoning companies like Slok.

Orji Uzor should not apply any 'directionlees tactics'. Instead of writing long essays, he should rather use the time to visit Ahia Ohuru in Aba and get himself a good material that will make a proper jail cloth. He should pay more attention on how to avoid prison even if it means returning the #7.2 billion he allegedly took from Abia coffers.

Crime / Abia Deputy Governor Calls For End To Upsurge In Crimes by AkachiNwog: 7:49pm On Jul 21, 2018
Abia Deputy Governor Calls for End To Upsurge In Crimes

The Deputy Governor of Abia State, Rt. Hon. (Sir) Ude Oko Chukwu, has called for more crime control measures to be taken to end the upsurge in crimes, especially use of hard drugs by young people, which he said propels abuse of the girl child and increased crime rate in the society.

The Deputy Governor stated this at the end of the seventh edition of "Walk For Love" program organized by Family Love 103.9 FM Umuahia at the Umuahia Township Stadium.

He emphasized that one key way out of the increasing crime rate in the society is to fight against the use of hard drugs.

Oko Chukwu who said he was delighted at the turn out for the walk which took the participants through major streets in Umuahia, the state capital, stated that the event created another opportunity for Abians and residents of Umuahia to walk for fitness.

He added that the early morning exercise which aims to ensure that healthy Abia minds are in healthy bodies urged Abians to avail themselves of the opportunity to remain physically and mentally alert.

The Deputy Governor commended the organizers, Family Love 103.9 FM, for the program which he said has helped to further unite the people of the state.

Rt. Hon Oko Chukwu later announced the donation of a motorized mobility equipment to a physically challenged person who participated in the walk.

Abia 2019: Arochukwu endorse Ikpeazu for 2nd Term

The clamour for Governor Okezie Ikpeazu to contest the 2019 Governorship election in the state has received further boost as the people of Arochukwu Local Government Area threw their weight behind Governor Okezie Ikpeazu and called on him to run for a second term in office.

They made their stand known at a grand declaration ceremony tagged "Honour Beyond Words" held for the Governor at Aggrey Memorial Primary School, Ibom Arochukwu.

In his address, the chairman of the Central Organising committee, Sir Donatus Okorie, expressed appreciation to the governor for his developmental strides in the local government despite not winning in the local government during the 2015 general elections.

He also commended Governor Ikpeazu for appointing many sons and daughters of the local government in his cabinet and administration.

He however, drew the governor’s attention to some of the pressing needs of the area, especially the completion of the Abam-Arochukwu link road and sinking of boreholes at the Ututu Cottage hospital and Ututu Courts and Police Station.

Okorie also informed the governor that the military personnel attached to Isu community have been withdrawn, thereby increasing the tension and security threat to the people of the area who were recently engaged in border clashes with their neighbors from another state.

In their separate speeches, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, Hon. Uko Nkole and other stakeholders praised the governor for his sterling performance in office and called on the people to ensure his re-election through the ballot in 2019.

In his response, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu admitted that there is need for more development projects in the local government and assured that he will work with the representatives of the constituency to achieve that.

He assured that other issues raised by the people would be tackled, especially ensuring that the boundary crisis involving Arochukwu, Akwa Ibom and Cross Rivers states is decisively tackled to ensure lasting peace.

The Governor also promised that he will ensure that the military personnel that were withdrawn are quickly restored to safeguard the people.

Deputy Governor, Sir Ude Oko Chukwu, among other top government functionaries, accompanied to the Governor on the visit.

Business / Ihedioha, World Bank Chief Advocate Growth by AkachiNwog: 11:16am On Jul 21, 2018
Ihedioha, World Bank Chief, Advocate Growth

Ending poverty and economic backwardness and installing a regime of economic prosperity in a sustainable way, remain the go-to, for Africa, with specific references to Ghana, Nigeria and other economically challenged African nations.

A former deputy speaker of the house of representatives, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha and the World Bank Country Director for Ghana, Mr. Henry Keyari were unanimous in their views that poverty and economic backwardness remain Africa’s biggest challenge even as some countries of the continent continued to celebrate decades of political but questionable economic independence.

Both spoke at the launch of the 2018 edition of the Institute of Financial and Economic Journalism (IFEJ) Flamingo Awards for Business and Financial Journalism in Accra, Ghana during the week.

Ihedioha however remained positive in the midst of what is on ground: “It is true that the level of growth the world expected from us is still far from what is on ground today. But we are coming. Nigeria is coming. Ghana is coming. Africa is coming’’.

“Many of you are already aware of the need for Africa to do more in order to overcome poverty and economic backwardness which has continued to torment us as a people- inspite of the abundant natural resources-enough to make us rule and dominate the world”, said Ihedioha who spoke as the special guest at the event.

Investment / As Abia Hosts 3rd National Council On Niger Delta By Jude Ndukwe by AkachiNwog: 8:23am On Jul 21, 2018
As Abia Hosts 3rd National Council on Niger Delta

-Jude Ndukwe

From Monday, July 23 – Friday, July 27, 2018, Abia State will witness a beehive of activities as she hosts the 3rd National Council on Niger Delta, at the State’s prestigious International Conference Centre, Umuahia.

During this period, government officials and many other stakeholders from the federal and the nine states of Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo and Rivers, that make up the Niger Delta, would converge on Umuahia bringing with it added dividends to the good people of the State.

While the first and second editions of the National Council on Niger Delta held in Akwa Ibom and Ondo States respectively, it is heartwarming that the Niger Delta, a foremost and most critical region in the socio-economic and political advancement of Nigeria, has found Abia a most comfortable, friendly and worthy place to play host to its Council for its third gathering.

The reason for the choice of Abia as host of this edition of Council is certainly not far from the fact that the Executive Governor of the State, Dr Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, has walked the talk and lived out the vision and mission of our fathers who deemed it necessary to create a Ministry of Niger Delta and all its affiliated agencies for the progress of the resource region.

With Abia State adjudged the most peaceful State in Nigeria, under Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, having frontally confronted and reduced to its barest minimum such incidents as kidnapping, armed robbery, rape, murder, gangsterism, cultism and other violent crimes that had left Abians in perpetual fear and made the State lose golden opportunities of hosting economically and socially beneficial events as this in the past, the days of glory are now here with us.

It is therefore not a surprise that having done this by consistently and substantially supporting security agencies and strategically working in synergy with them, Abia State has hosted such other national bodies as the, National Council on Health, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) etc and increased volume and value of Foreign Direct and local investments, marking the restoration of confidence in the State by both investors and Nigerians generally.

Apart from security, other issues that will form the fulcrum of discussion at the Council meeting are infrastructural development, environmental management, human capital development and agriculture.

The infrastructural gains which Abia has made since the governor assumed power on May 29, 2015, is unprecedented in the history of the State. With over 67 roads of high quality and international standards completed (mostly with street lights and functional drainage systems) and 82 others at different advanced levels of completion across the state, within just 36 months, Governor Ikpeazu has rightly earned for himself the title of “Caterpillar Revolutionary” given to him by the appreciative people of the State. The good thing is that this revolution has also been witnessed in other sectors like health and education where Abia students have taken 1st position in WASCE for three consecutive years since Ikpeazu took over in 2015.

Despite the challenges posed by indiscriminate disposal of waste by some people, the Ikpeazu administration has continued to tackle environmental issues head-on. The Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), has been strengthened with the acquisition of additional trucks for its work while enlightenment campaigns have continued to gradually bring the people at par with the governor’s vision of a clean and green Abia State.

The governor’s achievements in human capital development are well known. Apart from what he is doing with institutions of learning including primary, secondary and tertiary schools in the State, the government of Dr Okezie Ikpeazu sponsored 30 “Made in Aba” shoemakers and other leather workers to China to learn the automated processes of shoemaking with the aim of cascading their acquired knowledge to others back home. This, no doubt, is pushing the Made in Aba products higher in the scale of preference of high net worth and global patrons of shoes and other leather fashion wears and accessories.

Perhaps another key area of development that not only empowers Abians but also *secures* their future and that of the State is agriculture where the governor has so far distributed a whopping 2 million high yielding tenera species of palm seedlings to farmers out of the 7.5 million he has targeted to distribute before the end of the third quarter of 2019. This is in line with the vision of the 3rd Council on Niger Delta which has “Agric-Preneurship development as a sustainable Empowerment Strategy in the Niger Delta” as one of its key papers during the event.

From the foregoing, it is clear that *Dr Okezie Ikpeazu* has largely and satisfactorily fulfilled the vision of the Niger Delta in the aggressive implementation of his administration’s people-friendly policies and projects that has not only restored pride but also hope to Abians, an action that will continue to attract such bodies to the State with all its attendant benefits to all, from the artisans to the petty traders, from the taxi, bus and keke operators to the hospitality business operators, from souvenir makers to shoes, clothings, male & female bag makers to food vendors etc.

Abians are ready to show to the Niger Delta community in particular and Nigerians in general through the hosting of this important event, their ever friendly and hospitable nature, rich culture, and the fact that the Abia of today, under Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, has since made enormous progress in every area of life including those ones which space and time would not allow to be enumerated here.

As the delegates arrive, they are greatly advised that they should avail themselves the golden opportunity of freely going anywhere in the State and enmesh themselves unrestrainedly in the splendor and conviviality of the New Abia.

Welcome!

Atiku commends Ikpeazu’s leadership style

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has described Abia State as a place with unprecedented potentials in human and natural resources and commended Abia State Governor, Dr.Okezie Ikpeazu, for his efforts at placing Abia on the global map through his developmental drive in the state.

According to him, "Abia is one place that has unprecedented potential both human and industrial capacity".
"Let me therefore commend your leadership in this state. Though it is not surprising because you have the right qualities both intellectually and otherwise”, he added.

He stated this when he paid a courtesy visit to the Governor of Abia State as part of his one day visit to the state to solicit the support of the members and stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for his 2019 presidential ambition.

Atiku who decried the divisiness in Nigeria, insecurity and what he described as the worst economic decline in the history of the country, noted that it has become imperative for Nigerians to unite and come up with a leadership that will turn things around in Nigeria.

According to the former APC chieftain, “every good thing the PDP toiled to deliver to Nigerians in the past 16 years have been destroyed by APC within 3 years”.

Responding, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu stated that for Nigerians to make the right decisions they must look at where the country is coming from and where we are going bearing in mind what the future holds.

This he said must be done in sincerity and advocated for deep thinking and sober reflection if the right impact must be made in the country.

He called on Nigerians not to go to the polls in 2019 carelessly.

The Governor extolled the contributions of the former Vice President to national development and assured that such pedigree would count as the party decides her flag bearer for 2019 presidential election.

The Governor added that the unity of Nigeria has become imperative for even and speedy development, while expressing hope that Nigeria will rise.

"I am hopeful that this nation will rise, I am hopeful that this country will grow to its full potentials”, he noted.

Earlier, the former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, described the situation of the country as a rain and prayed the sun shines again on the nation.

He said Nigerians are disappointed with the present administration and called on Nigerians to look intelligently in order not to make further mistakes in the future.

The former Vice President who was accompanied on the visit by the former Governors of Ogun and Enugu States, Gbenga Daniel and Okwesilieze Nwodo, Senator Abdul Ningi among other national political heavyweights, later paid a courtesy visit to Elder statesman and onenod the founders of PDP in Abia State, Ezeogo (Dr) Anagha Ezikpe before proceeding to the state secretariat for a meeting with leaders of Abia State PDP.

Imo PDP: Appraising Ihedioha's Inclusive Engagement with the Grassroots.

Chinemerem Anyanwu

The wonderful grassroots consultation approach of His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha CON, Imo PDP frontline governorship hopeful, aimed at engaging more closely, the local communities, as part of moves to mobilize his party and market his candidature has earned huge currency for his ambition.

There cannot be any genuine democratic practice both in a political party or in the society, without inclusive citizens participation which is the panacea for citizens education.

Participatory democracy, has been acknowledged as the path to achieving true democracy, helps to evolve a better society where trust, rule of law, law and order and civic responsibility thrive.

Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, unlike other aspirants, is proactively working hard to connect his vision and that of his party to the grassroots by cultivating the rural populace into participating in his #RebuildImo Ideology.

He has achieved this by deploying effective procedural mechanisms for party members to have their say, and perhaps, their way too.

For instance, the ongoing statewide, Ward to ward Consultations with the grassroots of his party, and inauguration of various Support Groups are already yielding positive results and highly commend by party members and political observers.

If he sustains these strategies, though very expensive, PDP will be the ultimate beneficiary as the party, could be coasting home to victory, ahead of the elections.

GOV. IKPEAZU IS CHAMPIONING A SUSTAINABLE ECONOMY FOR ABIA STATE

By: Blessing Ogonna Gabriel

As we await the commencement of construction work at the proposed site for Enyimba Economic City, it is worthy to reiterate the monumental impact of such gigantic project on Abia’s economy.

Improving Abians’ standard of living through the creation of jobs, supporting of innovation and new ideas and provision of an overall better quality of life has remained top on the priority list of the government led by Governor Ikpeazu.

For Gov. Ikpeazu, improving the state's economy requires an economically viable, sound and sustainable approach. His approach has placed Abia on the map of investment-friendly states.

The agreements between the Abia State Government, Ruyi Group(a Chinese largest textile manufacturer) and Geometric Power Company is such that will make significant contribution to the emergence of a sustainable economic development.

The interesting aspect of this project is that it is strategically located in a place that you have a catchment business population of 25 million people at the confluence of all the states in the South East and South South. Currently linked by four lane Highway from Enugu to Port Harcourt and another Highway from Akwa Ibom, Abia and up to Bayelsa State which is ongoing. It has a standard gauge railway from Imo River down to Kano passing through 12 substations in Abia alone.

It’s just thirty minutes away from two seaports at Onne and Abonnema. It’s thirty minutes from Omagwa Airport and forty-five minutes from Owerri Cargo Airport. So, strategically speaking, there’s no other location that has the economic viability like Enyimba Economic City.

What does this portend for Abians?

The Enyimba Economic City is one project with huge potential of revenue diversification, creation of employment and all round development.
It is one project capable of meeting economic, social and environmental need of Abians. And because it is entirely a PPP project, you can be sure that it will outlive government administrations.

Governor Ikpeazu continues to change the narrative and it’s paying off.
Better days are ahead

The local government area holds the strategic position in the state as the ‘1’ of ABIA. It is on record that Isuikwuato LGA plays host to two frontline universities.

As Governor Okezie Ikpeazu visits today, the expectation is high and the atmosphere is frenzy. As iron sharpeth iron, Chief Nnamdi Udueze, the Executive Council Chairman of Isuikwuato LGA, compliments our Governor, in the provision of amenities to the people. He leads his people to this epoch making event. The people are in their true element waiting for the man of uncommon history. The big masquerade and his entourage will storm the Local Government playground to the warm embrace of a grateful people. The festival mood is electrifying. The march which held under the auspices of Abia State Market Amalgamated Traders Association, ASMATA, saw the traders march in their numbers through the streets of Umuahia, the Abia State capital and terminated at the Government House in what was described as “show of solidarity for a trader-friendly governor who has done a lot for traders in the State”.

It is not easy for you to see an Igbo trader leave his merchandise for a march of this kind. But we have to do this for Governor Ikpeazu because he has proved to us that he is a man who has the interest of not only the traders but that of the masses at heart. Such a man deserves our support,” one of the traders said. The president of ASMATA, Chief Emeka Enechebe, while addressing the crowd said they decided to march for the governor for his great achievements in the state which included the construction of needed infrastructure critical to their trade. Such infrastructure included Faulks Road that leads to the sprawling Ariaria International market, and other roads all over Abia that have made trading easier as goods are now transported from one point to the other without the usual stress of avoidable delays, accidents and displacements caused by flood.

Addressing the governor directly, Chief Enechebe said, “I am here before all the traders in Abia State to most humbly convey to you our unanimous decision to adopt you as our only governorship candidate for the 2019 governorship elections”. This elicited a rapturous round of applause from the traders.

Responding, a visibly elated Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, thanked the traders for their support and solidarity, saying that what they had done was the greatest show of love to him.

He further reminded the traders of the inestimable value he placed on them which made him make trade and commerce one of the pillars of development of his administration. He told them that apart from what he has already done in the areas of roads and other infrastructure, contract for the construction of Umuchichi Road in Aba has been awarded while work would soon commence on Ngwa and Uratta Roads also in Aba, saying that none of the roads he built has developed pot holes as he adheres to the best standards and qualities in his projects in the state.

“The era of ‘promise and fail’ is gone,” he declared. “I made promises to you and I have delivered. That is why you are here today to show support, and I sincerely appreciate that.” His announcement of donation of a coaster bus to the traders elicited rapturous applause from them. Continuing amidst punctuations by solidarity songs from the traders, the governor warned that no opposition member should post bills on the projects he has done in the state. He asked the traders to go and get their PVCs in readiness for the 2019 elections. “Anyone who wants your votes must first show you what he/she has been able to do for you. If they cannot show you, they don’t deserve your votes,” he said.

Some of the traders who spoke to newsmen after the march said they are ready to do all within their power to ensure that Dr Ikpeazu is returned as governor come 2019.

You’ve done well but we want more, Abia students tell Ikpeazu

The Abia State governor, Dr Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, on Wednesday, June 13, 2018, had an interactive session with secondary school students in Abia State at the Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia.
Ikpeazu

Signs that the gathering, which the students consider a rarity in Nigeria as a whole, was taken very seriously by the governor as an indication of his unwavering commitment to Abia students became clear when he arrived the venue with his deputy, Rt Hon Sir Ude Oko Chukwu, the commissioner for education, Prof Ikechi Mgbeoji, his information counterpart, Chief John Okiyi Kalu, the special adviser to the governor on teenage affairs, Mrs Chinaemenma Umeseaka and other high ranking government officials.

True to their ranking as the best students in WASCE for three years consecutively under Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, the students did not only show their brilliance but also their courage when, even in the words of the governor, “they asked very tough questions”. Nevertheless, the governor who appeared very much at home with the students he described as “my children”, answered all the questions asked him.
One of the highlights of the session was that the questions asked by the students were not screened as the students drilled their governor in a no-holds-barred manner.

Although the students thanked the governor for the deliberate policies in the state’s education sector that has seen to the radical turn around in performance of the students in WASCE, other exams and national academic competitions, they nonetheless requested him not to rest on his oars but continue to see to it that new teachers are recruited especially for science subjects, their teachers remain motivated and facilities in secondary schools of the state improved upon.

They also told the governor that some of their schools are under the threat of hoodlums who seek to attack students and make away with their belongings.
Responding, Dr Ikpeazu thanked the students for reciprocating government gesture and investment in them by leading in WASCE for the three years he has been governor. He promised that he has taken note of their demands and that a majority of them are already being attended to while machinery would be set in motion to address their other needs as he is committed to ensuring that they have all they need to continue to excel. “We are not ready to lower the bar”, he said.

While also assuring them that mobile laboratories are being procured to cover as many schools as possible for their science practicals, he informed the students that the state government has already employed ninety new science teachers to fill the shortfall experienced in that area. He assured them that as a way of further motivating their teachers, all their entitlements would be settled promptly. He enjoined the teachers to also focus on their job and not be involved in practices that are inimical to their reputation as mentors to the younger ones or be involved in anything that would distract them from performing their jobs dedicatedly.

Further responding to the students, Dr Ikpeazu reminded them that model schools are being built in the state to improve the ambience and the general learning conditions of Abia students.
Some of the students who spoke with newsmen after the interactive session said they never expected that in their life time, they would come so close to their governor, spend three full hours with him, have the privilege to ask him questions as they did on the day and even shake hands with him.

They commended the governor for his humility which they had been hearing about but now experienced firsthand, saying that the day was quite historic for them. “We have been highly motivated. And we have also come to know that one can be humble in life and also become great”, one of them quipped.

In her exact words though delivered in Igbo language, “ejiri m aka m juo ajuju, ma choputa na nwoke a wu Ihedioha wu onye ezi okwu. Ya wuri Governor na 2019, Imo ga idi mma. Chineke ga emezu uche obi anyi” (I used my hand (sic) to ask question, I found out that the man Ihedioha is a sincere man. When he becomes governor in 2019, Imo shall be better. God will grant us our heart desires.

Another woman who described herself as a retired headmistress and a pensioner, noted that the situation they are today as pensioners calls for great concern. She described Ihedioha as a man who she has observed since 2015 and found out that He hasn’t changed even in the promises he makes to people on his plans for Imo People. According to her, “Ihedioha will not treat Imo pensioners like Rochas. Ihedioha has conscience and He has prepared for leadership. He will develop Imo state so that our children can get employment and we the mothers can enjoy the fruits of our labour”.

It’s important to note that Chief Ihedioha recognizes the women as cardinal point of development especially in the rural areas. Women who work hard on daily basis to feed their families deserves to be supported. This, Chief Ihedioha has addressed severally by promising sustainable empowerment through a well organized means, to enhance their businesses. “Pensioners will not be dragged up and down for one verification or the other, they will be accorded their respect as senior citizens who have served the state with their strength.
