career politicians looking for the next best meal. If anything I think it makes reform weaker
I agree with you. Reform that was thought to be white-like political party is now turning to regular party like conservative and labour.

Reform supporters who thought they were predominantly white people and its their party won’t be happy with seeing brown people joining them now, I won’t be surprised to see another black politician decamp to Reform.

Confusion in the midst of enemies…. Interesting times ahead.

@AKALAMAGBO Congratulatios Baba!! We dey come wash the house ooh. share your sentiments with regards to buying despite the whole immigration brouhaha, worse case if kasala burst I sell am or rent am. Factored this in when I was buying, made sure it was in an ideal location, few mins from train station (48 mins into central london) and amenities. God go help all of us. Congrats once again.
Congrats to you too my Baba Santa 🎅… na your month we dey (Xmas), na make you celebrate for all of us for here oo.. 😁😁

Honestly, location matters when looking at buying property/properties.
They tend to say “buy the worst house in the best location and not the other way round”.

Whilst I was looking, I found some houses that were relatively cheap and needed no refurb. Just move in. But considering the location of some of those houses, I looked away.

I was bad with money but that changed just of recent due to things I read online and offline most times. I remembered buying Mercedes CLA 2020 in my first year in the UK. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t pay for all of it in cash but I deposited considerable amount that could have been invested elsewhere.

Then something happened… A friend who I went to Uni with, who I noticed struggled financially most of our Uni days told me they have secured a mortgage… I was shocked.. That news alone did a massive reset to my financial escapade. I then started saving, living frugally then ignoring my wants but prioritizing my needs…

Make I avoid too much talk sha… Reading/hearing people doing good things gingers me and it often ignites my sleeping medulla.

These are kind of stories me I love to see, read and thanks for sharing. More wins ahead and please come back to share more.

However, for some others, they don’t like to hear or see such things. What they want to hear is how immigrants will be driven out to go back to Naija and suffer, hence, when they read anyone doing well, they are angry and will start all manner of accusations of being boastful, proud or looking down on others. They became angrier to hear that immigrants were migrating to other places too, to do even better 😂 (that’s the one that amazes me the most, despite them leaving their precious UK for them). The stories they want to see are the next set of restrictions or rules to send people away. Only those who aren’t discerning enough think they wish others well when it’s actually the opposite. (They will deceptively claim they are not against immigration, bla bla bl, and all other crap 😂)

Once again, congratulations on your huge achievement, and I'm encouraged to know that folks on this thread are beginning to see through all those who post out of a genuine concern for the advancement of immigrants. Cheers, and I can’t wait to hear more success stories from you and others as well.
In the midst of all these brouhaha (immigrations stuff and vilification of Boris wave), we completed on the 27th of November and got the keys to our house. All thanks to the “Rent money is dead money” by LexusGS.

Honestly, it doesn’t scare me a bit as people panic on immigration whatever… I can’t continue paying rent for the next 3 years whilst on skilled worker visa if I have the means to buy. I know if push comes to shove, I can sell in 2 years considering I only took 2 years fixed term anyways, and please don’t tell me it’s easier said than done! I have weighed my pros and cons and I am happy with whatever decision I make as an adult.

Life goes on, don’t delay your plans for the fear of the unknown.

Nuggets from people like Jedisco also informed my decision on stock and shares ISA with InvestEngine. Truthfully, I wish I started early.

I like seeing posts from Zahra because they do contain immigration informations which are legit.
Also, her sound response to questions about things are unmatched here. Though, I still think Zahra and Jedisco should meet for a cuppa 😅😅

Peace ✌🏻

In my opinion, instead of even welcoming thoughts of increasing increasing ILR eligibility from five years, I'll say the UK can take away "benefits" from ILR and retain them for citizens. The average legal immigrant is not interested in benefits, most need the ILR just to get away from the shackles of CoS. Immigrants are ready to work hard, pay taxes, contribute to the society, while also saving up for their future. Citizenship eligibility can be increased to 20 years, that shouldn't be a problem. I don't think the average legal immigrant cares so much about citizenship.

It’s not a gender war Giselle.

I think people are just trying to point out what might be the reason why the ECO wasn’t convinced, hence, the refusal.

Just look at it as well from that perspective.

You won’t make any mistakes. Stay confident and ignore the naysayers. Even here in the UK, in the field of paediatrics, moms are recognised as the primary caregivers for their children, and your situation will be no different.
Mothers often have a deeper understanding of their child's needs, routines, and emotions, which puts them in a unique position to make important decisions about education, healthcare, and overall upbringing. You know your child best, and your instinct and knowledge will guide you in making the right choices for her future.
In your current situation, continue to advocate for your child's best interests, regardless of what others may say; their opinions don’t define your capabilities or choices this far.
Remember, you are the key to your child’s happiness and well-being. It’s not about grandparents or anyone else on Nairaland; it's about you. Surround yourself with supportive people in this time you are alone and seek professional advice if needed.

Zahra29:
The first raft of immigration reforms announced in the White Paper are being put forward to Parliament today , with implementation set from July 22.

Summary of new policies:

- raising the skills threshold for Skilled Worker visas, removing 111 eligible occupations

- closing the social care worker visa route to overseas recruitment in response to widespread abuse and exploitation

- only allowing time-limited access below degree level through a targeted immigration salary list and temporary shortage list, for critical roles only, with strict requirements for sectors to grow domestic skills

- commissioning the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to conduct a review of the temporary shortage list including occupations, salaries and benefits

- Workers in occupations on the temporary shortage list will no longer be able to bring dependants and will not be permitted salary and visa fee discounts.

- The occupations included on the List are time-limited until the end of 2026 and will only remain beyond that date if the independent Migration Advisory Committee recommend it.

Zahra… How does this affect those on skilled worker visa in health and care sector, specifically NHS employees?

I’m seeing conflicting interpretations by people, some saying those on Health and Care would be moved to Temporary shortage occupation list, meaning they may no longer be able to renew their visa after the end of 2026…

Can you clarify please?

Erm no, that's not how it works. Location matters.

Do you think the government can afford to house tens of thousands of migrants in towns where 3 bed properties average >> £600k like many parts of the south east? Never mind the fierce opposition they would face from the residents of these areas (including MPs).

Nope, they strategically house them in much cheaper areas. They even tried to rehouse the survivors of the tragic 2017 Grenfell fire away from Kensington and even London, because the Grenfell site is prime real estate and the council saw an opportunity to tear it down and privatise it instead of retaining it for social housing use.
Zahra… Have a look at this.. Though it appears locals are not happy..

The figure is coming closer to the £600k you mentioned.

It’s now like “needles in haystack” for past and present government to find a lasting solution controlling migration by boats…

Iranians have been crossing the English channel in their tens of thousands since Covid. It's not a new phenomenon.

Thankfully I don't live anywhere near Dover, Clacton or any of the areas earmarked to house irregular migrants.

Also, Labour is proposing moving them out of hotels and into rental accommodation paid for by the government.
If that’s the government plans, don’t you think they will eventually be dispersed everywhere around cities, suburbs or boroughs and may eventually reach where you live. Unless you no longer live in the UK.

To back your point….

This same role was advertised last month, the post didn’t stay a week on NHS jobs before it was pulled down… Then, it stated overseas worker who needed sponsorship were all welcomed.

Just yesterday they re-advertised the role and attached picture is what was written…

Going forward, it would be challenging to get a job that provides sponsorship like you opined.

But what I’m worried about is the continued provision of COS for the people that is currently being sponsored by NHS….
Goke7:
Ignorance is the issue, am sure those who are thinking 10 years is not an issue are not aware of recent changes to sponsorship by employers

1. Cost of assigning a COS is now over £500 from 299 and this is now in force

2. In the white paper just released the cost of immigration skills charge paid by employers to sponsor any worker will now go up by 32% currently it’s £1000 per year so sponsoring a worker for 5 years is £5000 now that will go up by 32%

3. In the white paper too for any employer to sponsor they must show evidence of investment and training of citizens before they can be approved to sponsor and that’s where the home office will be waiting to deny employers to assign COS.

So going forward it will be more difficult for employers to sponsor and that’s where the catch of this new proposed policy is to ensure not many will make it to the finish line of 10 years and let’s be real how many employers with all the cost implications will be ready to sponsor for a whopping 10 years and how easy will it be to get new employers to switch sponsorship so those saying they are willing to work for 10 years am not sure they understand this new policy thoroughly perhaps they need to go and study that white paper before they go open their wide mouth like that Tanimu guy 😂

5 years ILR qualification will be based on the following factors;
Age
Salary
English exam
Education
Field of work

If you can score good point here, then proceed to part 2 which is 10 years route.

Mortgage might be a factor to consider.

TravelRe: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by AKALAMAGBO: 6:35pm On May 14, 2025
So you mean those who have the deposit should keep paying landlord for another 4 years? And not buy…

Is it not better to still get that mortgage, getting the mortgage means your deposit is tied against a property and you can sell if let’s say the government asked people to leave, that, you can recoup your deposit back.

Or I’m I missing the scope?

Raalsalghul:
Lol, both applies.

When you say approach mortgages with caution” Do you mean pause any mortgage plan if there’s any and see what happens? Or save the mortgage deposit and keep saving 😂😂

It’s already looking a bit funny for skilled workers now
ehizario2012:
For me, the key take away is that relocation/Japa should be seen as a means to an end and never an end in itself. I'll say Nigerians (especially those without settled status) in the UK should be interested in politics back home, who rules, who wins elections etc because there's indeed no place like home. I'll say Nigerians in the UK should save save and save/invest for the rainy day, keep developing yourselves and earning transferrable skills/degrees, live a modest life and approach mortgages with caution. No place like home.

I assume this is one of the scariest moment living in UK.

Professionals on skilled worker visa have been thrown in limbo… At the end of the day, no place like home as they say.

You could wake up tomorrow and be told to leave the country, but that wouldn’t happen if you are in your home country.

Thats why I always preach about investing back home.

Interesting times ahead.

Overall, I'm happy with my choice- but if buying again would be sure to again ask for the location of SH and try to keep my distance.
I just went through half of the comments on the link you posted.
What I deduced:
1) Not advisable to buy a new build as percentage of them are SO and HO as backed by government policy.
2) If you are having difficulty with neighbors, things will never change for better as their kids grow, they become more feral.
3) Reporting neighbors to council may reduce the value of your house as at when you want to sell it.
4) Your peace of mind is impeded.
5) Your child/children if there is/are any may grow up and mingle with kids from bad parent smoking joints, fighting and shouting all day everyday.
6) Your personal effects are not safe.
7) Your safety is not guaranteed.

Many more things to write but I will stop here.

Na to shine ✨ eye when person wan buy house be that…

Most people on the post advised Old builds in a good location is far better than New Builds…
