This write up is for prospective and serving corps member... Congratulations once again on the success of our final exams in our various institution of choice, having to be a corps member is the dream of every undergraduate and now we are here a GRADUATE. What’s next after the service year and what do you need to take as a parting gift from the scheme apart from the Certificate of National Service (CNS). I often call the Service Year “A YEAR SABBATHICAL LEAVE” sounds awkward but hopefully after completing this article my point is understood. The Service Year as a LEAVE from the Reality of Life Reality of life is what is expected of you as a graduate some of which are securing a job, payment of bills, feeding and clothing, etc although we do some of these things now but we still depend on sponsor at least for some tips (it might not be the same with everybody). All of these are what we take leave from for a whole year and if we can maximize this opportunity it can make us the best man for that billion dollar job. During the Service Year try as much as possible to update and upgrade yourself because you are all you’ve got to be successful. Your degrees and diplomas are not enough to get that dream job you desire the labor market is full of competition and you need to be steps ahead of your colleagues to beat them to the job. Are you acquainted with the software packages used in your discipline? Look within your course of choice and go for some professional courses that can upgrade you and as well update your curriculum vitae, when you take all these it gives you edge and can convince your employer when you’re job hunting. Apart from the professional software packages knowledge of the basic computer application can be of help too as you don’t expect your employer to start training you MS-Office, Powerpoint etc, be informed “your CV determines your Job”, your CV is like a magnet it can attract and can also repel depends on the side it takes with your employer, what is inside really matters endeavor to make it attract and not repel in order to make it fulfill its purpose. For as many that wants to venture into entrepreneurship it is avenue for us to brand ourselves to make clients wants our services and products, try as much as possible to be the best in whatever your choice skill you do. After NYSC I am opinion that to be successful in life one needs to be 100% focus on his/her career without any distraction from their spouses, where you can deal with the outcome of your plans without having to report to anybody. Many of the successful men in our generation became successful and famous while they are still in their youth giving their businesses full focus and the determination to succeed is non-negotiable. If you will fall in love let it be yourself and commitment to succeed in order not to have another generation of poverty. After NYSC do well to invest your youthful energy into your career as no man or woman in this 21st century is ready to marry a jobless spouse, as a woman if not much you have to be contribute to the finances of the family. After Education commit yourself to your Career and followed by Relationship after which you can then think of Marriage, no late comer as regards marriage wait patiently and do it when you are financially buoyant because love won’t pay the bills your work and career path will. Remember “Your CV is like a magnet it can attract and can also repel depends on the side it takes with your employer”. Akinde Oluwaseun Adewale OY/17A/0485 |
