Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State and former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. (Mrs.) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, are apparently not in a hurry to put an end to their verbal warfare as the Governor has told the latter that he is awaiting a letter from her lawyers [perhaps challenging him in court.] Oshiomhole, who reacted to the former minister’s statement through his Special Adviser on Media, Prince Kassim Afegbua in a press statement on Thursday, said she should explain to Nigerians how so much sleaze went unnoticed under her watch rather than parrying the issues. He went further to say that rather than respond to issues, Okonjo-Iweala was making self-indicting statements on how she denied Edo people the funds needed to develop critical infrastructure. The statement read further: “She should be ashamed to even state that she denied Edo people infrastructure loan, when she could not redeem what was due to the state. Would there have been need for loan request if she was truly in firm control of the economy under her watch? “Is it not ridiculous that the former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy pretends to be ignorant of the sleaze and primitive looting of the nation’s treasury under her watch? Does it not prick the conscience of Okonjo-Iweala that so much financial improprieties were perpetrated right before her nose and yet wants to be celebrated as a super Minister? Does she want to absolve herself of the abysmal performance of the economy under her watch during the Jonathan years? “From the revelations so far and the manner in which our resources were plundered in the last administration, it is crystal clear that Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was grossly incompetent to manage the nation’s economy especially on account of the huge sums of money running into billions of dollars that were stolen under her watch. Such incompetence will be further complicated if it is assumed that she looked away while some people helped themselves to the nation’s treasury. Either way, she is complicit. “We have no doubt in our mind that, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, from all indications, has shown a remarkable attribute of a voodoo economist and one who rather than answer very simple questions by way of clarifications, easily condescend to base sentiments to divert attention. She has numerous questions to answer with respect to the management of our collective patrimony. What manner of a Finance Minister will allow huge sums of money to be withdrawn from the Central Bank of Nigeria with whimsical stroke, dealing with individuals in a way that eliminate the usual control that should be the hallmark of such body? How can a World Bank former Managing Director allow such conduct right under her watch without raising concerns? “Those organizations which have been trying to dash her awards must as a matter procedure carry out due diligence to properly score her, else, one would have cause to suspect that such awards may have been procured. Anyone giving her award will be doing Nigeria and Nigerians a great disservice in the face of on-going investigations and revelations that have exposed the rotten underbelly of the Okonjo-Iweala years. In the meantime, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole awaits the letter from Okonjo-Iweala’s lawyers, but she should be reminded that public officers are accountable to the people and should be ready to answer questions on their role while in office or out of it.” |
The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has suspended the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Modupe Alade, for alleged incompetence. In a statement in Ado Ekiti, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Idowu Adelusi, said the suspension would last for three months. Fayose subsequently directed the state Head of Service, Dr. Olugbenga Faseluka, to oversee her office pending her resumption. Alade was the treasurer of Ayo Fayose Campaign Organisation for the 2014 Governorship Election before her appointment as the SSG by the governor. She retired from the state civil service as a Permanent Secretary, during which she traversed many ministries including Education, and Local Government Affairs. She hails from Ifaki Ekiti in Ido/Osi Local Government Area of the State. |
A three-year-old girl, Haliya Abolore, has died in the Gbagada area of Lagos State after she was allegedly made to sit on a hot water container by her class teacher, identified only as Maryam. PUNCH Metro learnt that Haliya, who attended a private school on Idoluwo Street, Dosunmu, Lagos Island, was allegedly made to sit on the container on Wednesday, October 21. It was learnt that Haliya, who suffered burns in her buttocks and private parts, was thereafter rushed to the Lagos Island General Hospital for treatment. It was gathered that the matter was reported at the Adeniji Adele Police Division, while Maryam was arrested. The school proprietress, Mrs. Bose Shomoade, was also said to have been invited for questioning by the police, and made to pay parts of the treatment expenses. Our correspondent gathered that Haliya, after two weeks, was moved to the Gbagada General Hospital, for further treatment. The girl, however, died on Tuesday. Speaking with PUNCH Metro, Haliya’s father, Abolore, said he took the incident as a mistake on the part of the teacher, who knew the container had hot water, and made his daughter to sit on it. He added that the school brought an undisclosed sum of money for the girl’s treatment before she eventually died. He said, “She was first taken to the Lagos Island General Hospital. Later, she was taken to the Gbagada General Hospital. We have spent about N300,000 on her treatment. The proprietress gave us N5,000 on the day of the incident. One week later, she visited the girl. She gave some money to my wife’s mother. “The school teacher has been arrested and detained after the matter was reported at the Adeniji Adele division. The teacher was careless. He knew the container was used to keep hot water and she still sat her on it. All my daughter’s private parts were burnt. She was asked to sit on a container containing hot water. “My wife is distraught. She has been taken to our family house in Kwara State. Haliya is our jewel. We are so sad to lose her.” The Coordinator, Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team, Mrs. Lola Vivour Adeniyi, said they had written to the state Ministry of Education to investigate the school. She said, “It is sad. The abuse of the three-year-old occurred when she suffered horrific burns. She was made to sit on a container of hot water in her school. We have just been informed that she died on Tuesday. “Apparently, she stopped responding to treatment and the pain was too severe. We have also informed the Ministry of Education about the incident.” A doctor in the hospital, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “The girl died due to complications from the burns.” When PUNCH Metro contacted the school proprietress for comments, her line did not connect as of time of this report. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor, confirmed the incident. He said, “The teacher was arrested and the matter was transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation for further investigation. The operatives at the SDCI thereafter charged the suspect to court.” |

DETERMINED to crush Boko Haram, the Federal Government yesterday made a passionate plea to the United States and Israel for urgent assistance. The Minister of Interior, Lt- Gen. Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau (retd), made the plea when he hosted the ambassadors of both countries in his office in Abuja. He spoke of government’s readiness to collaborate with the two countries to defeat Boko Haram. According to the minister; “as you know, this is the hub of internal security arrangement in the country. With five strategic security institutions, there is no doubt that the ministry has a major challenge of dealing with internal security. “Out of the three legs of the criminal justice system, we have two in this ministry – the police and prison. All of them are strategic institutions as far as internal security is concerned. “We know that you emphasised on partnership, collaborative efforts and security as it affects not only us but globally. We are ready to partner and collaborate with you to ensure that we achieve some level of security in Nigeria and all over the world. We are going to embark on holistic inter-agency collaborative efforts towards capacity building for the security challenge. “As you also know, there is an increase in world activities that border on threat to security. So, every nation has a role to play, it is not a responsibility of just one country. “Even in our case, where we are dealing with Boko Haram, it has now become a regional problem. It is no longer a problem that Nigeria alone can deal with, but one that affects four other countries including Nigeria. Earlier, both the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. James F. Entwistle and his Israeli counterpart, Mr Uriel Palti, confirmed their countries’ readiness to rout Boko Haram. Entwistle said: “We have had an extensive relationship with the Nigeria police and that is the relationship we would like to see develop and grow. For example, we have an assessment team working with Nigeria Prison Service with the idea of how we can help in development and training in future. We have always planned for ideas and ways we can help in that regard. “We are here in particular to discuss the situation in the northeast in line with the problem of insurgence in the world. We are concerned about how we can help in organising particular kind of trainings. We are very happy to identify with Nigeria in that area. “Another area we have equally discussed with the minister is how we can contribute in government’s watchdog and Security Governance Initiative (SGI) and this ministry has been patient on this issue, but I am pleased to say that we have a team and it is a very interested idea as an attempt to approach the need to reform democracies to improve securities. It is an exciting possibility. “As I always say, the USA is not going to do anything for Nigeria, we are going to do things with Nigeria. We are two equal democratic partners working together to make the world a better place,” he noted. |

Kabir Abayomi Ayeola represents Ibeju/Lekki Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. In this interview, Ayeola, a cognate member of the House and Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) says Senator Bukola Saraki must face trial to clear his name. Excerpts: Would you say President Buhari has done well thus far? Done well so far? (laughs) it is a question you can answer. He has imperatively done well. He’s been fantastic. I pray he should continue like that. Critics say his promise of change has remained a promise, what do you think? I don’t know what they expect. Already, change is taking place. You can see change in our security, even finance. All leakages have been blocked effectively. Nobody does anything with impunity any longer. Whenever you are doing anything now, you would think thoroughly about the consequences, unlike in those days when you could do whatever you liked, therefore, I can say that the promise of APC about change is already manifesting. How would you rate the anti-corruption fight? The rate of corruption is declining, and that is an evidence of change. I’ve just said that before anybody does anything in this country, he will think twice because they know if they do anything against the laws of the country, they will pay dearly for it. Does the names on the ministerial list justify the long wait? The long wait is more than justified. More than justified. The president told us he was looking for credible Nigerians to serve in his cabinet, people who can deliver. Do you want to tell me that the inclusion of somebody like BRF (Babatunde Raji Fashola) is not justifiable? Or is it Amaechi? Go and see their achievements as governors of their respective states, then you will agree with me that Buhari has done a lot of work to ensure he selected the best to serve this country. Some APC big wigs are calling for Saraki’s resignation due to his code of conduct issue, while some of the miniterial nominees have EFCC isuses, isn’t this d That you are facing charges before a court of law does not necessarily mean that you have been proven guilty. It is only when the court pronounces you guilty, that you can be said to be guilty. Every suspect is innocent until proven guilty. I want to assure you that if any of the ministerial nominees is found guilty, in the next few minutes such person is gone. That is Buhari for you. Don’t you think the recent claims by Boko Haram that it carried out the twin bombings in abuja is a minus for this government? Boko Haram has been deeply entrenched in our society, that to eradicate them within three months will not be easy, unless by a magician. The President we elected is not a magician. He’s a human being like us who needs to do things the way they are done with what we have seen so far, we can say to some extent, there has been a reduction in the activities of Boko Haram. I was with a military officer recently, and from the report I gathered from him, within a few months, the issue of Boko Haram will be a thing of the past in this country. I want to tell you that if the immediate past president had approached the issue of Boko Haram the way president Buhari is facing it now, they would not be in existence today. You can also see that on a daily basis, members of the sect are giving themselves up. Jonathan administration had reduced Boko Haram significantly, are you saying what we have now is better? Better. Far better. I say it without apology to anybody. If there was a recent bomb attack in Abuja, do you know how many of such attempts were unsuccessful? Like I told you, it’s not something that can be eradicated within a few days, but gradually we are getting there, and very soon, we shall get Boko Haram out of the way Is the call for the resignation of the Senate President not a sign of crisis of confidence in APC? Why are people calling for the resignation of the Senate President? It is premature to call for the resignation of Saraki at the moment. People should not be in a haste about it. They should allow the law of the land to take its course. Let us wait for the outcome of the matter. He knows what to do, and if doesn’t know what to do, Nigerians will tell him. We should allow the court to make its pronouncement. How true is the story that senator Tinubu is behind Saraki’s travails? I don’t know what they mean by that. I don’t know. Is it a crime to be successful? All these accusations against my leader are not worth it. Was it Tinubu who made a false declaration of assets against Saraki? Does Tinubu own the Code of Conduct Bureau? What are they talking about? Tinubu is not even aware of what Saraki has in his records. Tinubu cannot access the records so how can he be a party in this matter? Don’t you think it’s Tinubu’s own way of getting his pound of flesh from Saraki over his alleged betrayal? Well, if he betrayed APC, it is not Tinubu that he betrayed. Tinubu is not APC; he is a leader in APC. I’m an APC person, so are millions of others. If he has done anything wrong to APC as a party, that is not to Tinubu. If he has done anything against APC, the party has sanctions that can be meted out to him. I don’t see this issue as that of betrayal Don’t you think that the issue might become an albatross for the APC if not well managed? I don’t see it affecting the APC. How is it going to affect us? Rather, Saraki is letting the world know that he is not a gentleman by any standard. No matter how big you are, you cannot get into any elective office without a political party. Those who voted Saraki as Senator did so using the APC. In fact, on the ballot paper, there are not photographs, rather what you see are the logos of the political parties. People voted for the party, not for Saraki. Therefore, if the party says this is what we want, as a reliable person, even if he wants to lead the party, he should have abided by the party’s decision. That he did not abide by the decision of the party means he cannot lead the National Assembly. You must be a good follower before you can be a good leader. How do you then react to the vote of confidence passed on him by senators across party lines? Nigerian factor, that is the Nigerian factor What do you mean by Nigerian factor? When people see the fact, and pretend that they did not see it. That’s Nigerian factor. There is a culture in the country which we all must continue to pray against. If Saraki is removed today, his best friends with whom he dine and wine will deny him outrightly and will even expose more about him. Facts that were not known to us because he is no longer on the seat. Nigerians, to a very great extent don’t see the bad side of their friends and leaders for fear of being persecuted. Do you agree that Saraki’s trial means APC is equally on trial? It’s not. Its Saraki who is on trial, not APC. The offence committed was not committed by the APC. Saraki is an individual within APC as a party. It is he who is on trial not our party. I also believe that the issue should be managed properly. We should not condone anything nonsensical. That is why we should allow the court which is charged with that responsibility to do its job, we are not going to interfere, I can assure you. As long as we don’t interfere, our call for change, integrity is intact Saraki by virtue of his position is the chairman of the National Assembly, what does trial mean to you as a law maker? It’s normal. We made the law, and we should be able to obey the law. If the number one lawmaker in the country is believed to have broken the law, he should face the law accordingly. I don’t see anything bad in it. The court is there to decide whether he is right or wrong, and that is not said by words of mouth but by evidence you can produce before the court. Very simple Don’t you think it should have been handled politically? It’s not a political matter. It’s criminal, and criminal cases are not tried in political circles. The courts handle such. It’s not that we are fighting within our party. It’s not a political matter at all. It’s purely criminal. He has to defend himself that he did not run foul of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Therefore it cannot be handled politically. How do you view the backing Saraki is getting from the PDP? PDP is trying to regain relevance through the backdoor by trying to shield Saraki who also aided them to get what does not belong to them. For 16 years, they were in control of the National Assembly in this country, and nobody bothered to know what they were doing. We did not aid their members against them. If they have conscience they should just play their role of opposition. That they should not stray into our party and aiding our party man against us. Since Saraki has allowed them to use him, I wish him good luck I can assure you that Buhari will never aid anybody to go against the constitution of this country, even his wife. |

72An organisation’s ethical policy will provide a code of professional conduct for managers when dealing with potentially controversial issues which arise in the business environment, such as human resource policies, trading practices, director’s responsibilities, industrial espionage and corporate social responsibility. The actions of Businesses large and small can have a significant impact on their staff, suppliers, community and the planet .The management of organisations, who define their policies, can choose to act primarily in pursuit of profit or to adopt a more ethical approach. They often embody these policies in a corporate social responsibility policy (CSR). An ethical approach aims to ensure the employees act responsibly in putting ethical considerations before profit, considering the implications of their actions on staff, suppliers, community and the planet. It encourages staff to be sensitive to their community, always do the right thing, and behave morally fairly and honestly. Such a policy will seep into the culture of the company and help staff select the correct course of action in any given situation. Good business ethics are sometimes required by law, and will create trust and public acceptance in the market place for the company. They will reflects the culture and philosophy. Why should businesses act ethically and risk their profits? There are those who argue that the objective of any company is firstly to make a profit, and that many organisations have a stated aim off maximizing shareholder returns, in which case sacrificing profits to ethics may conflict with director’s fiduciary responsibilities. Shareholders today will largely accept that ethical considerations must go at least hand in hand with profit requirements, and this should be embodied in the CSR policy, and allow directors to make socially responsible decisions. This is a constant dilemma for managers, whether they are employed by a giant corporation or running their own business. Many owners and managers know that ethical policies will increase costs, and thereby reduce profits. On the other hand companies who develop an ethical brand image such as Fairtrade or Body shop may be able to charge higher prices for their products and encourage loyalty from their customers. So in this case an ethical policy does not necessarily lead to reduced profits. A company that behaves unethically , for example by paying staff low wages, may attract bad publicity and fail to appeal to potentially high flying staff , making it more difficult and expensive for them to attract new staff. So sometimes ethical behaviour can pay off for an organisation even if they don’t put profit first. |

Every parent wants their child to behave well in any situation -- and part of that is having proper table manners. What are the most important manners for kids to adhere to? Here's a list that will help you educate your kids on good table manners. Good table manners are an important skill for kids to be learn at an early age. From the lunchroom to the boardroom, kids will -- throughout their life -- have to eat in front of others, and that can forge a positive or a negative impression on others. It's preferable that the impression be positive, of course. "The lessons learned in the home over a meal will then travel with the children to their friends' homes, where they will be more welcome and more likely to be invited back if they are polite, well-behaved and helpful at meals. Childhood manners also travel to school, and later on to dates and the marriage home," says Susanne M. Alexander, a character specialist and contributor to www.parentsconnect.com. So what are the most important dinner table manners and etiquette for kids (and everyone!) to know? Please and thank you These two important phrases are the cornerstone of good manners, period, and extend to table manners. They show gratitude and appreciation instead of entitlement (and no one wants a child -- or an adult -- with an entitlement complex. It's a huge turnoff in life). "When the family gathers together, it is an opportunity for the children to learn courtesy by saying 'please' or 'thank you' or waiting to speak until someone else is finished. Dinner-table interactions are a good time to learn respect as each person has the opportunity to share something about his or her day," says Alexander. Chewing 101 Across the board, etiquette experts agree that one of the most important dinner table manners to teach is to chew with your mouth closed. Encourage your children to do so by modeling it yourself, and even showing them how. After all, no one wants to see what's in there. Speaking (without food) Another important element of proper table manners that etiquette experts recommend is to never speak with your mouth full. This goes hand-in-hand with chewing with your mouth closed. At best, it's distracting to speak to someone who has food in their mouth -- and it can also be hard to understand people with food in their mouth. At worst, it's very unappealing, to say the least. Table skills From where silverware should be placed to how it should be used, knowing your way around the place setting is important in manners and etiquette. "Knowing how to properly hold -- and use -- a fork and knife not only gives a child a sense of accomplishment and independence, it also allows a parent to better enjoy the meal. The parents can also be assured that their child will impress any adults they eat with," says Kathie B. Martin, APR, president of The Etiquette School of Birmingham. Martin also advises that it's important to know how to eat in a clean manner. Consideration Above all, good table manners are about consideration -- recognizing that you aren't alone at the table and what you do affects others. "The most important lesson in good table etiquette is always being aware of your actions and understanding that you share the dining experience with every diner at the table," says etiquette trainer Stephanie Raimo of Manner House. "It is easy to put your napkin on your lap or sip from the proper water glass, but true manners start with consideration for others." |
