I Have Your Type at Home; Your Own Too Much Sef By Pius Adesanmi August 5, 2014. Just before exhaustion and a bad bout of malaria put yours truly and this column out of business about six weeks ago, I returned to Accra from Pretoria and decided to touch base by phone with a close friend of mine in Nigeria. I meant it to be the usual “how body?” and “how go dey go?” phone call but the tone of her voice told me that all was not well with her. She is an accomplished professional on the upper rungs of the social and economic ladder in Abuja. I asked her what was wrong and what she had to say gave me new insights into the Nigerian tragedy. Or should I say that her narrative added more nuance and angles to my exploration of the Nigerian psychology? You will recall that in my old essay, “Parable of the Shower Head”, I claimed that the psychology of the Nigerian, not corruption, is Nigeria’s deadliest enemy. That wrongly-wired mass psychology of ours produces all kinds of logic-defying, self-rationalizing national cultures and behaviours of which corruption is but a consequence. My friend was out shopping in one of Abuja’s upscale shopping malls. She parked properly in the designated parking area and was about stepping out of her car when another car hit and scraped her rear bumper while trying to park behind her. The fellow driving the offending car had Abuja new money and newly manufactured featherweight big man written all over him. The man obviously belonged to Nigeria’s most prominent tribe: the “don’t you know who I am?” tribe. From north to south, east to west, this is a tribe of rich and stupid Nigerians above the law who can always count on the foolish ordinary Nigerians they oppress to support them on religious or ethnic grounds whenever they get into trouble. Our friend, the featherweight big man, stepped out of his car very importantly, assessed the damage he had wrecked on my friend’s car, shot out a flippant “sorry o madam”, and made to walk away after having determined that the minor scrape on my friend’s bumper was not worth any wahala. My friend had other ideas. She called him back, boiling with rage, and told him that she was the one to determine whether the damage to her car was significant or not. As someone who likes mint cars, the scratch he made on her car would need to be repaired. What was he going to do about it? The man became hostile and they began to argue: the familiar Nigerian public argument. The man shot a glance at my friend’s most critical finger and, seeing no engagement or wedding ring on it, took the argument to a zone where the fate of many Nigeria women is sealed. “Madam, you see yourself now? Arguing with a man in public. No wonder you are not married. For your information, I have your type at home.” That sexist comment did it for my friend. She went ballistic. By now, passersby had gathered around them, some to watch, some to intervene. You know how those scenes go in Nigeria, don’t you? On hearing their respective sides of the story, the self-appointed spectator-judges, male and female, began to reprimand the arrogant man and to plead with my friend to forget the matter as the damage to her car was really nothing: just a barely visible scratch on the bumper. My friend could not overlook the man’s arrogance and sexism. She is connected to some very senior and powerful policemen in Abuja. She made a call and police men arrived swiftly. On seeing the calibre of policemen sent to intervene and deal with him after just one phone call, the arrogant semi-big man had a change of heart and began to beg. The crowd also intensified the begging. A begging jamboree ensued. When the policemen noticed that the crowd and the offender were all begging my friend, they called her aside: “madam, although this man offend you true true o but with this level of begging wey we dey see for here so, please let bygones be bygones.” My friend couldn’t believe what was going on. The police had joined the begging carnival! She refused to cooperate. Her car had been hit and the offender had added insult to injury by being a sexist pig. She stood her ground. The man must be made to repair her car. When the begging failed to work, the crowd and the policemen turned against her. “Dis woman sef! Too headstrong! Dem type no dey see husband marry. See as all of us dey beg am since morning and she no gree. Alaseju ni obinrin yi o. Shior.” One by one, the spectator-judges hissed, shiored, and left. The police withdrew, condemning her for being too headstrong, and the offender also left the scene, encouraged by the police and fellow Nigerians. My friend decided to respect herself by entering her car and driving off. When I phoned her, her impotent rage against Nigeria and our misogynistic culture had not abated. Omoyele Sowore, a quintessential Reporter, who was the Presidential flag-bearer of the African action congress at the recent concluded general elections. Sowore was speaking with a group of well-meaning Nigerians in a Town-hall meeting where he stated that the "Land use act" was smuggled into the Nigerian Constitution by Former President of Nigeria- Olusegun Obasanjo. Sowore, further highlighted that since then Nigeria as a country has not had any progress. He further briefed everyone that what we need as a Nation is to return to "Land ownership" The owner of SaharaReporters said "we must be careful as well as not to return to customary ownership of Land that we had in Nigeria before the time of independence, in which a majority of the citizen are left without land while a few people own land" Sowore stated that he will review the 1999 constitution which he claimed as a fraudulent document which was been imposed on Nigerians by the Nigeria military, He suggested a new constitution for Nigerians, a living document that is discussed by the the Nigerian People and must also pass through a referendum, he said. "Ojo Aderemi was a one-time Student Union President of the prestigious University of Ibadan, he was rusticated by the management on the basis of staging a protest against the inability of the management of the institution to issue the students their ID cards having made payment for it" A Press release was posted on Facebook highlighting the reinstatement of Ojo Aderemi, a one-time Student Union Leader of University of Ibadan, The press release states further below: "The TakeitBack movement seizes this medium to state it's outright rejection and total condemnation of the Rustication of Ojo Aderemi; The Students' Union President of the University of Ibadan, by the management of the University. We reject it as despotic and unbefitting of a democratic clime. The TakeitBack movement is prepared to join forces with Nigerians and mass of students to demand the immediate reinstatement of the students' leader and restoration of the illegally banned students Union. Recall that Ojo Aderemi had led a congressionally resolved protest against the inability of the management of the institution to issue the students their ID cards having made payment for it. The announcement by the Congress of students to stage a protest against management's irresponsibility was first met with stiff resistance by men of the Nigerian police force acting on the instruction of Prof. Olayinka; the Vice Chancellor of the institution. The commissioner of Police threatened to shoot the students if they make true of their plan to stage a protest against the authorities of the institution. But this threat did not prevent the Students' Union President from leading the students in peaceful demonstration to execute the demand of Congress for students ID card. Upon staging this protest, the management got furious and decided to immediately and illegally proscribe students union activities and subsequently put together a kangaroo panel to intimidate to criminal silence, activists, members of Union parliament, Union executives viz other fighting arms of the Students Union. Please recall that all of this events happened in 2017. The Olayinka led University management had to wait till all agitations for union restoration are completely buried and calm before launching this attack on the said leader of the Students. Hence, the victimization of Ojo Aderemi came to us as a rude shock. This does not however mean we are surprised or oblivious of the underlying intentions of the management of the University of Ibadan. Everywhere in Nigeria, there is a renewed and conscious attempt to completely kill the tradition of radical students unionism. And this is because there is a looming attack of fee increment on every institution of the country including the University of Ibadan. Just this month, the state government of Sokoto and management of Sokoto state university had increased fees of the institution by 100%. The Nigerian government is on the verge of launching several attacks on the poor people of this country. As we can see, the government would be increasing the price of fuel and VAT very soon. This would definitely put a strong strain on the economy and pocket of the poor man. These increments would also translate to the increment in all commodities including fees. This is why there is a plan to first smash our ability to resist these attacks before introducing several draconic policies. This is why the TakeitBack movement views these attacks beyond the question of democratic rights of students but also an attempt by government to undermine our ability to resist imminent attacks on the living standard of the Nigerian people. It is to this end that the TakeitBack movement calls on mass of students and well meaning Nigerians to reject all conscious attempt to reduce our university into mere barracks and turn our democratic space into an arena of tyranny Signed: Sanyaolu Juwon Natl. Follow this Link to read enlightening and very informative Piece: https://www.femiotawa.com/2019/04/what-is-difference-between-resume-and.html |
Dare Lasisi What is the difference between a resume and a CV? The primary differences between a resume and a curriculum vitae (CV) are length, what is included, and what each is used for. While both are used in job applications, a resume and a CV are not always interchangeable. That's the universal truth not known to many job seekers and applicants. A CV (Curriculum Vitae, which means a course of life in Latin) is an in-depth document that can be laid out over two or more pages and it contains a high level of detail about your achievements, a great deal more than just a career biography. The CV covers your education as well as any other accomplishments like publications, awards, honours etc. The document tends to be organised chronologically and should make it easy to get an overview of an individual’s full working career. A CV is static and doesn’t change for different positions, the difference would be in the cover letter. A resume, or résumé, is a concise document typically not longer than one page as the intended the reader will not dwell on your document for very long. The goal of a resume is to make an individual stand out from the competition. The job seeker should adapt and modify the resume to every position they apply for. It is in the applicant’s interest to change the resume from one job application to another and to tailor it to the needs of the specific post. A resume doesn’t have to be ordered chronologically, doesn’t have to cover your whole career like and is a highly customisable document. It is very important to know that most employers have no time to waste on any CV or resume with unpardonable typographical errors and distinctive grammatical blunders. As a job seeker, you must cross check your application and CV very well as if your life depends on it. You don't need to be in a hurry to produce either CV or resume. If you're jobless, you need to engage in either voluntary works for your community, or charity, just to fill the gaps even if you're not collecting salaries/allowances from those activities. If you leave too many gaps in your CV, your potential employers see you as unproductive and probably a lazy person. In a nutshell, you cannot buy work experience in a supermarket. Let me give you my own personal experience with journalism. I did not have any background in journalism but I love the profession. I am a self-trained journalist from my undergraduate days at the University of Ilorin in Nigeria. Campus journalism was even one of the bogus reasons for my expulsion from the university during the Sani Abacha era. That's another long story. I don't wish to re-open an old wound. I once worked with the Daily Times of Nigeria(DTN) in Lagos as a freelance reporter(not a staff!), just to gain work experience in journalism with well-trained journalists. I was paid N250 per published story and to earn N1000 per week, I must publish at least 4 good stories per week. I endured the stress shortly after my NYSC programme in Niger state, just to gain experience to add to my CV. No pain, no gain. Time to apply for Commonwealth Media Internship in London, I knew I could be outrightly disqualified for not having a first degree in Journalism, Mass Comm or English language. It was clearly stated in the advertisement. I just took a bloody risk! That was original WABILAHI TAOFEEK. I boldly stated in the 1-page resume(not CV, you know why?) about my campus journalism experience plus DTN newsroom training, Habitat Communications(I was the General Editor of Shelter Watch journal for over 1 year), The Monitor and many others. I also produced some of my published articles and news stories, just to impress the Commonwealth HQ panel members. I was asked to produce 5 articles/news stories, I sent them more than 10.(Over-Sabi dey worry me dat time?). My mission was to impress them to overlook my Bsc Geography certificate and focus on my unique creative writing skills and years of work experience in the media industry. It worked for me like magic. I was the only applicant selected out of 65 applicants from other Commonwealth countries. That was how I travelled to England without paying one dollar. The rest is now history. Another possible option is to look for companies or individuals to give you reference letters for your potential employers. I recently searched the web to really understand how to write a good CV and resume for employers and clients. I just shared the outcome with my friends on social media. Knowledge is light. Many Nigerian graduates cannot write an acceptable corporate-tailored CV or resume to impress potential employers. This is a serious matter. The Internet is a reservoir of unlimited information and knowledge. Your CV or resume is your selling point to your potential employers and clients. You just need to stand out from the crowd. Applicants and job seekers need to remember the contents of their CVs and resumes, employers are likely to ask many questions during the interviews. Don't cook up too many lies (you cannot smartly defend!) in your CV or resume. Don't appear as a brainwashed fool before your future employers. Loan yourself a digital brain. The world is now a global village. As simple as ABC. Don't present forged documents/certificates, if discovered later, not good for your image. Be a good ambassador of your family. Thanks for reading. Source: https://www.femiotawa.com/2019/04/what-is-difference-between-resume-and.html

The aim of this write up is not to discourage people from seeking greener pasture, but to highlight the pros and cons of you embarking on that journey, so that at end you don't feel dejected and depressed with culture shock and thereby taking to crime, all in an effort to eke out a living, even though you could have been a king in your own country if truly you know your onion. Let me focus on the United Kingdom for the sake of this essay. It is not cheap to live in Europe and America or just any foreign country. You're still an immigrant even if you have the passports of those countries. Don't ever deceive yourself! When the chips are down, they would tell you your country of origin. As simple as ABC. Please think deeper, don't engage in crimes in foreign lands. Where do we start? To apply for citizenships of those countries, work permits or ordinary visa renewals and many others are not so cheap if you convert the pounds to naira. You must be a millionaire in nairas! What about house rent, bills(gas, electric, phone, internet etc) plus council tax payments? For example in South London, a single room is about £400 or more per month to rent. You're free to convert that to naira! In this single room, no privacy, you will share toilet/bathroom, kitchen and living room with total strangers. You will need to tolerate some people from different family backgrounds. I will write a full story about this aspect very soon. If you want your own privacy, then go and rent either 1 or 2 bedroom flat. Don't even think of renting a 2-bedroom flat because the rent per month is close to £1,000 or more. Ask Londoners for details. If you move out of London, you're likely to see cheaper accommodation but less African people. It is your personal choice. I lived in London for almost 14 years before recent relocation to Scotland. I have the map of London engraved in my brain forever! I am still a Londoner at heart, I love London any day. Right now, more Nigerians(and Africans!) are now moving out of London because of the high cost of house rents and other personal reasons. For example in Glasgow, you can still see a moderate 2-bedroom flat for less than £600 per month inclusive of council tax. You can never see that in London right now. Quote me anywhere! Let me drop this bombshell here, life is going to be 'extra hard' for you if you're paperless(zero immigration status) in the United Kingdom. Life is likely to be 'hyper-hard' if you're working(either as a cleaner, careworker or any odd jobs!) with another person's document because it is more or less like modern slavery but better than begging people for money. You won't get full payment after your stress. That's the bitter truth. Right now, I always advise fellow Nigerians, don't come to the United Kingdom to 'hustle', no longer possible without valid documentation. If caught, jail, then deportation to your country of origin. If deported, you cannot apply to re-enter the UK until after 10 years. Many years ago, I knew one 'paperless' Nigerian guy(Mr A) in Peckham who was not paid for working through 'back-door' as a night-shift cleaner in one office in Waterloo, central London. The owner (Mr B, a Nigerian citizen!) of the bank account used for the salaries just failed to pay because he knew the 'paperless' guy(Mr A) cannot report to the police. Mr B later escaped to Manchester. Don't let me re-open an old wound. I rest my case for now. To cut the long story short, Mr A was recently granted settlement in the United Kingdom after almost 20 years of zero documentation. That's the sacrifice for the sake of his children. Are you ready to endure 'plenty sh*t' for 20 years before obtaining UK papers? It is your choice if you're planning to relocate to the UK. I am not here to discourage anybody. With Brexit, it is no longer 'business-as-usual' for immigrants! If you don't know before today, ask Google for details. During this endurance of 'plenty sh*t' in a foreign land, some Nigerians at home won't stop disturbing you to send money, shoes or smartphones as urgent as possible. If they know your mobile phone number, you're in deep mess day and night. Even if you come from Africa or anywhere with a student visa, you cannot work for more than 20 hours per week except 'cash-by-hand' work which is illegal. Life is a risk, it is your choice. The luck of Taiwo is not the same as that of Kehinde. We(Nigerians living in the United Kingdom) all have our bitter-sweet stories to tell fellow Nigerians still 'trapped' in Nigeria. If you're able to obtain a full scholarship to attend any UK school, I say a big congratulation to you. I wish you well and don't ever mess up this 'once-in-a-lifetime' golden opportunity. Let's say maybe 10 or 15 years ago in the United Kingdom, you can work in many places as an immigrant without proper scrutiny of your passports but right now, proper checks of all papers before any work, even to work as a cleaner in any office. If caught working illegally without proper documentation, you're free to predict your 'punishment', ask Londoner for details. I no go use all mouth talk am. It is not an easy task to work under extreme cold weather and still be sending money to Nigerians living in Nigeria. Don't even talk about some of us sending 'free money' to total strangers with financial problems on social media. If you're working '9am-5pm' in the United Kingdom, after paying rents and other bills, you have little savings. President Muhammadu Buhari delivered a Keynote address at the World Economic Forum happening currently in Jordan. Buhari boasted that no state in Nigeria is currently held controlled by Boko- Haram terrorist. The President stated in his Keynote adress that his admnistration is doing everything possible to win the serious war against terrorism. He agreed that the world is transcending and he therefore urged every nation to be co-operative. President Buhari highlighted that he has recaptured all regions and territories in 2014 held hostage by the dreaded group. In his words : “Ladies and gentlemen, I strongly believe that the lack of social and economic inclusion was the root cause of many challenges we are experiencing. Today, our population is one hundred and ninety million people. By 2050, it is estimated that we hit three hundred and ninety million making us the third most populous country in the world. This means we must start working now to ensure this population is productively engaged. “In the last four years, we focused on security while implementing inclusive policies. On the security front, we made significant gains in fighting Boko Haram. We have recaptured all territories held by Boko Haram in 2014. We have liberated thousands of Nigerians held against their will. “Today, I am pleased to say no territory in the Federal Republic of Nigeria is held or controlled by Boko Haram" Read more: https://www.femiotawa.com/2019/04/economic-forum-no-state-in-nigeriais.html
