There was a mild drama recently at the Agboyi/ Ketu customary court when a woman Ethel Amagala 53, who had earlier approached the court for the dissolution of her marriage with one Emmanuel Amagala, 60, stormed the court in anger over newspaper publication of her divorce case. Mrs Amagala whose children had earlier pleaded the court to discontinue the case, said her husband also became angry when he read their divorce story in the newspaper (not Vanguard). She said: “The children want the case discontinued as it is causing embarrassment to the family. They said they would find a way to bring peace into the family.” She had on the November 12, 2015 approached the court for a divorce with her estranged husband who she said took a new younger wife. The President, Mr. O. T. William however lampooned Mrs Amagala over her behaviour noting that the court was a public place and could not have stopped journalists from doing their job. The embattled woman sought divorce on the grounds of abandonment, infidelity, lack of love and threat to life. “My husband constantly tells me I’m old.” Narrating how she met her husband over 27 years ago, she said: “When he was studying at the Teachers’ Institute in Bayelsa, he did not have money to take care of the family; I was frying and selling chips in Bayelsa and even borrowed money for his studies.” When we had our first child, it was my elder sister who paid for the hospital bill and took care of me and the baby for three months. The situation remained same until 1991 when he took up an appointment with the NNPC, as a manager. Now, he decided to marry a younger woman and calls me a witch saying “I am old.” She further claimed that her husband constantly beats her, leaving her with injuries. “He had one day threatened me with a knife in the presence of our tenants who rescued me as he would have stabbed me with the knife.” Mr Emmanuel Amagala denied the allegation of assault story on his wife but told the court he abandoned the house he built and decided to live alone in a rented apartment because of her incessant nagging attitude which he described as unbearable. The President however asked the couple to go home and make their marriage work. Nlanders what's your take on this? |
An organisation, Committee Encouraging
Corporate Philanthropy (CECP-Nigeria), has urged
Nigerians to take deliberate actions to reduce the
impact of cancer on individuals and communities.
The organisation made this call in a statement
made available through email on Saturday by its
Executive Secretary, Dr Abia Nzelu. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the statement was to commemorate the Feb. 4, 2016 World Cancer Day tagged ``We Can, I Can’’. The statement said that the World Cancer Day was an opportunity for nations to collectively examine cancer control strategies and identify winning formulas that would accelerate progress. ``The goal for all of us is to ensure that fewer people develop cancer, more people are successfully treated and that there is a better quality of life for people during treatment and beyond. ``World Cancer Day 2016 to 2018 explores how everyone collectively or individually can do their part to reduce the global burden of cancer in the world. ``Just as cancer affects everyone in different ways, all people have the power to take various actions to reduce the impact that cancer has on individuals, families and communities,’’ it said. According to the statement, this year’s World Cancer Day is a chance to reflect on what actions one can take to make a difference in the fight against cancer. ``There is the need for us to examine the current cancer situation both globally and in our nation, Nigeria; and to determine how we can all take action,’’ the statement said. It said that, World Health Organisation (WHO) data shows that about 70 per cent of cancer deaths occurred in developing nations like Nigeria. It said that while over 100,000 Nigerians are diagnosed with cancer annually, about 80,000 of such persons die, giving a dismal survival rate of one to five. According to WHO, Nigeria has had a significant increase in the incidence of deaths from the common cancers within four years. ``Cancer kills about thrice the number of people who die of tuberculosis, HIV and malaria combined,’’ it said. The statement said that to address the problem of cancer, CECP has adopted the Big War against Cancer as its current focal cause. ``The BIG WAR against cancer is designed to establish the infrastructure for efficient and effective cancer prevention and treatment in Nigeria. ``The short-term goal of the BIG WAR is to acquire and deploy 37 Mobile Cancer Centres, one for each state and FCT Abuja. ``A single Mobile Cancer Centres in a state of Nigeria could make a huge positive difference in the fight against cancer,’’ it said. It said that a Mobile Cancer Centre was a clinic on wheels with state of the art facilities for screening, follow-up and treatment including surgeries for pre-cancer and early cancer cases. It urged all Nigerians to give their treasure and talent to help in the war against cancer. |
Miazga

Chelsea have signed United States defender Matt Miazga from
New York Red Bulls, the English Premier League champions
announced on Saturday. Miazga agreed a four and a half year contract with the west London club as they look to the future at their problematic centre-back position. With John Terry in the twilight of his career and Gary Cahill and Kurt Zouma both prone to inconsistent form, Chelsea's defence has been far from impregnable and Miazga could provide the answer if he continues his rapid development. "I am very happy to sign for Chelsea, a world-famous club with a reputation for major success," Miazga told Chelsea's website. "I am delighted to be in the Premier League, the best league in the world, and can't wait to meet my team-mates and get going. "I am still at the beginning of my career but I believe this is the place to develop and learn from some of the best players in the world." The New Jersey-born 20-year-old joined the Red Bulls Academy in 2009 and made his debut for the Major League Soccer outfit aged 18. In the 2015 season, he helped the Red Bulls finish with the best regular season record in North America as they advanced to the Conference Finals. Miazga made his debut for the US national team in November having represented his country at Under-20 and Under-23 level.
