http://www.DLBNewsonline.com/

Akwa Ibom State, the highest oil and gas producing State in Nigeria is located in the coastal southern part of the country. Vegetables are also imbedded in large ton in the State, which are used for food, hydro zed vegetable, pharmaceutical proteins and enzymes.

With these different types of farm produce that are spread across the State, the people of Akwa Ibom State are very creative in using them to cook fantastic delicacies such as; Ekpang Nkwuko (Cocoyam Pottage); Afang Soup, a delicacy made from shredded ‘Afang’ and waterleaves with meat, smoke fish, salt, pepper, crayfish, palm oil, stock fish, and little water; Edesi Isip (Coconut Rice), which is prepared with coconut milk and other ingredients like goat meat and smoked fish; and Asa Iwa (Cassava Porrigde), is prepared with grated cassava, wrapped in tender cocoyam leaves and cooked in palm oil stew.

Politics / $22.7b Loan: Nigeria Could Service Chinese Loans Till 2040 by Akron965(m): 12:18pm On Mar 08, 2020
http://www.DLBNewsonline.com/

The Senate on Thursday gave nod to the $22.7 billion loan request by President Muhammadu Buhari, bringing Nigeria’s external debt stock to nearly US$50 billion, amid lawmakers and public’s concerns the approval was without scrutiny.

The government of President Buhari desperately needed the approval as African’s largest economy returns to the international debt market to shake off impacts of recession and finance the budget this year. Particularly, Nigeria’s ambition to close the infrastructural gap, including in power and transportation sectors, depends, largely, on project-tied Chinese loans.

About 70 per cent (that is, $17,065,496,773) of the new $22.7 billion loan bid will be coming from China’s EXIM Bank, Nigeria’s biggest bilateral lender in nearly two decades.

Apart from China, the other lending agencies are..... (continue reading) http://www.dlbnewsonline.com/dlb-news/22-7b-loan-nigeria-could-service-chinese-loans-till-2040

Celebrities / How The Fear Of #metoo Led Disney To Cut A Popular Character From 'mulan' by Akron965(m): 10:35am On Mar 07, 2020
http://www.DLBNewsonline.com/

All eyes are already on Walt Disney’s live-action remake of its 1998 animated favorite Mulan due to its reported $200 million price tag and global release plan at a time when coronavirus concerns have led some high-profile blockbusters to switch release dates.

Now there’s another piece of news that has fans concerned: the new adaptation will omit a popular character from the original film, Li Shang, voiced by B.D. Wong.

In the 1998 version, Shang captained the army that the titular female warrior (Ming-Na Wen) joins under the guise of being a male recruit named Ping. Like Shang’s signature song goes, he somehow makes men out of his soldiers-in-training and, in the process, finds himself drawn to Ping in particular.

By the end of the movie, romance has blossomed between the captain and his best fighter, whose real identity is exposed before the climactic battle.

It’s that kind of questionable power dynamic between a superior and a subordinate that the creative team — including director Niki Caro — behind the 2020 version wanted to avoid in their telling of the ancient Chinese legend that serves as Mulan’s source material.

Speaking with the website Collider and other journalists as part of a set visit, producer Jason Reed said.......(continue reading) http://www.dlbnewsonline.com/dlb-news/how-the-fear-of-metoo-led-disney-to-cut-a-popular-character-from-mulan

Politics / $22.7b Foreign Loan: PDP Kicks Against National Assembly's Approval by Akron965(m): 10:24am On Mar 07, 2020
http://www.DLBNewsonline.com/

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has berated the Senate for approving President Muhammadu Buhari’s request for a fresh $22.7 billion loan.

The approval was a sequel to the consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts.

The chairman of the committee, Senator Clifford Ordia, a lawmaker from Edo State, read the report and recommended that the Senate approve the request. Prior to the approval, there were arguments between lawmakers and the Senate President that lasted for over half an hour, this paper also reported.

The federal government had earlier said the $22.7 billion loan would be used for infrastructure development.

In his recent letter, President Buhari explained that the external borrowing plan targets projects cuts across all sectors with special emphasis on infrastructure, agriculture, health, education, water supply, growth and employment generation.

It should be noted that President Buhari sent the same request to the eighth Senate under..... (continue reading) http://www.dlbnewsonline.com/dlb-news/22-7b-foreign-loan-pdp-kicks-against-national-assembly-s-approval

Politics / Africa Oil Transaction Could Precede Surge In M&A In Sub-saharan Africa by Akron965(m): 10:03pm On Feb 28, 2020
http://www.DLBNewsonline.com/

Africa Oil Corporation’s acquisition of a 50% stake in Nigeria-focused Petrobras Oil and Gas B.V. (POGBV) could be the start of a new wave of mergers and acquisitions in sub-saharan Africa’s economically important oil and gas sector.

In January, Africa Oil completed the acquisition of a 50% equity stake in POGBV in a deal worth $1.5bn, with the total cash consideration being approximately $520m. Standard Bank Group was the sole advisor to Africa Oil, a Canadian group with exploration assets in East Africa and now also production assets in Nigeria.

POGBV’s underlying assets – non-operated indirect interests in two large offshore deep-water oil and gas fields off the coast of Nigeria – produced an average of 442,000 barrels of oil per day in 2019, of which Africa Oil’s net entitlement is approximately 33,630 barrels per day.

The location, size and quality of the acquired assets makes this a transformative transaction for Africa Oil, at a time when further investment opportunities are expected across the region.

Charlie Houston, Oil and Gas Executive, Standard Bank Group, who advised Africa Oil, said: “This transaction has enabled Africa Oil to capitalize on its strong cash position and appetite for the African economy to be become a fully-fledged exploration and production company. Having cash-generative assets in the current phase of the commodity cycle is hugely beneficial and will provide Africa Oil with a sound platform for stability and future growth.

“The transaction is likely to precede several other large merger and acquisition deals in sub-Saharan Africa’s oil-producing and frontier oil & gas countries as US and other international oil companies rationalize their operations in the region and restructure their asset portfolios,” said Dele Kuti, Global Head of Oil and Gas at Standard Bank Group.

“We expect to see a surge in deal flow over the next two years as onshore/offshore assets in Nigeria and offshore assets in Angola come to market, among others.”

Standard Bank introduced Africa Oil to POGBV and the Nigerian market whilst it also helped guide the firm through the two-year process. The Bank expects to see strong interest from both international and local players as these assets become available.

“It is possible that domestic investors will partner with international oil and gas companies, many of which see the potential to unlock significant value in the region,” says Kuti. “As these assets come to market, the need for strategic advice and financing will increase significantly.”

At a time when sustainability and energy transition is becoming globally prevalent, the oil and gas sector remains a major contributor to Nigeria’s economy. It has enabled the country to overtake South Africa as the continent’s biggest economy and remains an important driver of socio-economic development in west and central Africa.

Further afield, the sector’s rise could transform Mozambique’s economy in coming years and contribute to job employment and infrastructure development in the country with further positive economic impact on neighboring southern African countries.

For Africa to capitalize on this opportunity to ignite sustainable economic growth, governments need to ensure that sound regulations and governance standards are in place.

Those countries that do this, and demonstrate stability alongside prudent fiscal frameworks, will be best placed to attract much-needed foreign and domestic investment.

“Access to finance, local knowledge and strategic advice will also be essential to unlocking the sector’s potential,” said Kuti.

Health / Coronavirus: IMF, World Bank Consider 'virtual' Meetings As Virus Spreads by Akron965(m): 9:46am On Feb 27, 2020
http://www.DLBNewsonline.com/

Growing concerns inside the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank about the spread of the new coronavirus have prompted the institutions to consider scaling back their Spring Meetings in April or hold them by teleconference, people familiar with the discussions said on Wednesday.

The institutions’ April 17-19 Spring Meetings are scheduled to bring some 10,000 government officials, journalists, business people and civil society representatives from across the globe to a tightly packed, two-block area of downtown Washington, DC, that houses their headquarters.

Financial markets have fallen sharply in recent days on news that the virus is spreading rapidly in Europe. Italy has reported more than 400 cases and people who have visited Italy have tested positive in Brazil, Algeria, Austria, Croatia, Greece and other countries.

Like other coronaviruses, the new virus - which causes a disease now called COVID-19 - is transmitted from person to person via droplets when an infected person breathes out, coughs or sneezes. It can also spread via contaminated surfaces such as door handles or railings.

The IMF has warned in recent days of a potentially deeper economic fallout as the coronavirus spreads beyond China, cutting its forecast for 2020 global growth by 0.1%.

The virus’ spread has raised concerns inside the Fund and the World Bank that the close interactions among people from their 189 member countries at the Spring Meetings could inadvertently contribute to the problem.

Officials from both institutions and member governments said.... (continue reading) http://www.dlbnewsonline.com/dlb-news/coronavirus-imf-world-bank-consider-virtual-meetings-as-virus-spreads

Celebrities / Kamchatka Brown Bear: The Russian Beast by Akron965(m): 9:33am On Feb 27, 2020
http://www.DLBNewsonline.com/

In continuation of our series on weird facts you don’t know about some countries and animals – we present to you, the Kamchatka Brown Bear.

The Kamchatka Peninsula, on Russia’s Pacific coast, is a 10-hour flight from Moscow and remains one of the world’s great natural wildernesses. Emerging from steam in the Valley of the Geysers is a Kamchatka brown bear (Ursus arctors beringianus), the largest carnivorans in Eurasia.

It was noted by early visitors to the region that these bears were relatively tamed compared to their Siberian counterparts, but in 2008 a platinum-mining community in the region was overrun by a slew of beer, killing two workers.

Up until 1990 the bear population thrived, but since then, with the demise of Soviet Union, mineral exploitation and international trophy hunting has seen the bear population put under unprecedented ecological pressure.

Crime / Museum Thieves Bagged Prison Sentence For Stealing Gold Coin by Akron965(m): 9:22am On Feb 27, 2020
http://www.DLBNewsonline.com/

Some stories are just too salacious to be true. However, this museum heist actually happened in Germany.

A Berlin court convicted three men for stealing a 100 kilogram solid gold coin worth $4 million from a museum in a heist that could have been out of a Hollywood or Nollywood crime/thriller film.

Two men, 23 and 21 years old, were sentenced to four and a half years; while the third, a 21-year-old security guard, must serve three years and four months. A fourth accused was acquitted.

They were tried under rules for juveniles which reduces the prison terms that could be imposed. Prosecutors had asked for five to seven years. The defense sought acquittals.

Three years ago, the coin – which carries Queen Elizabeth II’s imprint and is called the “Big Maple Leaf” – was stolen from its case in Berlin’s Bode Museum. The perpetrators were able to by-pass the alarm system, while carrying out the act.

A 25-year-old man living in the southern German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg has tested positive for coronavirus after a trip to Milan, and another man further north is in a critical condition with the disease, authorities said on Tuesday.

The Baden-Wuerttemberg health ministry said the man in the southern state, who had likely become infected during his visit to Italy, had contacted authorities after coming down with flu-like symptoms. He will be treated in isolation, it added.

“People in close contact with the patient will be kept in home isolation and be asked about their state of health every day,” it said. “As soon as a contact person develops symptoms, they will also be isolated in hospital.”

In North Rhine-Westphalia, the state health ministry said the man there was admitted to hospital on Monday afternoon with symptoms of severe pneumonia.

“The patient is in a critical condition and is currently being isolated in the intensive care unit,” the ministry said.

http://www.DLBNewsonline.com/

The Walt Disney Company has named a new CEO. Bob Chapek is replacing Bob Iger, effective immediately, the company announced Tuesday.

Chapek, 60, who has been with the company for 27 years and was most recently chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, a position created in 2018, will take over Disney's day-to-day operations, the company says.

That will allow Iger, who will stay on as executive chairman through Dec. 31, 2021, to focus on the company's overall creative vision and strategy over his remaining two years with the company.

The time was right for Iger to step down as CEO, he said, now that Disney had successfully launched Disney+ in November 2019 and consolidated into the fold the Fox movie and television studios, acquired in a $71.3 billion transaction that closed in March 2019.

Celebrities / Sexual Assault: Harvey Weinstein Convicted Of Rape, Criminal Sexual Act by Akron965(m): 9:20am On Feb 26, 2020
http://www.DLBNewsonline.com/

Harvey Weinstein has been found guilty on two of five possible counts: criminal sexual act in the first degree and rape in the third degree. He was found not guilty, though, of the most serious charges, of predatory sexual assault (two counts) and rape in the first degree.

The jury, made up of seven men and five women, delivered the verdict on Monday, nearly a week after beginning deliberations.

Weinstein, 67, was handcuffed and taken straight to jail where he'll remain until sentencing on March 11. A spokesperson for the defense said they are working to get Weinstein into the "infirmary unit" or protective custody.

"While he was not convicted on the most serious charges, we are disappointed in the verdict and will be filing an appeal. There are issues in this trial that were extremely troubling, and they prejudiced Mr. Weinstein's ability to have his case fairly judged," the defense team told Yahoo Entertainment Monday afternoon.

"These will be addressed to a higher court. In the meantime, we are working on assuring that Mr. Weinstein is brought to Rikers' Island's North infirmary unit (NIU) at the Anna M Kross center complex or in protective custody so that he can get the best medical supervision and care possible."

Foreign Affairs / India: 7 Killed, 160 Injured In Violence Over Controversial Law by Akron965(m): 11:38pm On Feb 25, 2020
http://www.DLBNewsonline.com/

Violence continues unabated in the north-eastern part of the Indian capital as protests against a controversial citizenship law have turned into a communal frenzy.

Seven persons including a policeman have been killed in clashes, with over 160 injured. Delhi Police on Tuesday imposed prohibitory orders in the northeast region of Delhi amid fresh incidents of stone-pelting.

Police confirmed the killing of seven people in violence that erupted on Monday after anti-citizenship law protesters blocked roads in areas of Delhi. Law enforcement said around 50 police personnel were also injured in stone-pelting incidents in different parts of the capital.

Beside prohibitory orders, the government has also deployed over 3,000 para-military forces in the area.

“Carrying weapons or any incendiary material is prohibited. Printing, circulation or dissemination of communally sensitive, provocative material even on social media is prohibited.

“Assembly of more than four persons and any kind of demonstration without any permission of competent authority is prohibited,’’ the order issued by Chief of Delhi Police’s North-East district Ved Prakash Surya reads.

India’s federal Home Minister Amit Shah has directed officials to restore normalcy while chairing an urgent meeting in the presence of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and other senior officials.

Internal security in the national capital is directly under Shah’s ministry.

Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has said there is a need to seal Delhi’s borders to control the situation.

“Legislators of the affected areas informed me that there is a severe shortage of police force and police can’t take action till they receive orders from the top.

“I have also asked District Magistrates to take out peace march with police in these areas,’’ Kejriwal said while briefing the media after the meeting held at his residence.

The first violent protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) enacted by the federal government were witnessed on 15 December in southeast Delhi, where protesters pelted stones and damaged public transport and set fire to a couple of buses.

Police had also cane-charged students of a federally-funded university in the neighbourhood, claiming them responsible for the violence.

Since then, dozens of women, mostly Muslims, from the locality began a sit-in protest at Shaheen Bagh, demanding the withdrawal of the CAA.

The Citizenship Amendment Act, enacted on Dec. 13, 2019 seeks to grant citizenship to illegal immigrants, belonging to minority communities from three neighbouring Islamic countries, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan “who entered into India on or before Dec. 13, 2014.”

However, the benefit was not extended, conspicuously to Muslim immigrants.

The act was contested by several opposition parties, civic rights groups, and university students as discriminatory on religious grounds and violates the secular credentials of the Indian Constitution.

According to the latest numbers in Delhi, 32 people have lost their lives during protests against the CAA since its enactment.
