The effects of the global financial crisis are gradually being felt here in Nigeria. It has been my observation that many take to the fire brigade approach - responding only when things go haywire. As an entrepreneur and/or business manager, what are you doing to cushion the effects of the crisis on your business? How do you plan to weather the storm? |
We are building a new, re-vitalised online community at the Mobility Nigeria blog. In addition to ggetting news, info, and tips on everything mobile in Nigeria, now readers can register in order to respond and contribute to articles on MobilityNigeria.com. To spice things up and get things rolling, we are giving away N500 free GSM airtime every month to each of the top five (5) most active contributors on Mobility Nigeria. Looking forward to seeing you around. The URL is mobinaija.com on your mobile, and www.mobilitynigeria.com on PC. |

interesting. The contact syncing procedure does sound hectic - especially for non-Geek users. Any hope that its not so difficult syncing with Windows? By the way, how much did you pick the G1 for, and where in Nigeria? The second Android-based phone, the Agora (and its sibling the Agora Pro) should be out in January. It has the same form factor as the Samsung i780 and will be available online only from the manufacturer's website. |

Bossman, to stop that from happening, you need to restart your phone after you have been activated for the plan. |
We have tried out at least one GPS system here on the Samsung i780 smartphone. Lock on time is very good - less than 2 minutes and our position was pinned. Unfortunately, maps for Nigeria are still very scanty, and all we got was major expressroads and cities to compare our location with. GoogleMaps on PC is more detailed - especially in Satellite view. Hopefully, Nigerians will rise up to the challenge of creating content for our own use in this regard. Till then inner-city use of GPS is out of the question here. For now, with what we obtained via the Samsung test, GPS is arguably currently useful only for finding your way between cities e.g. on a trip from Lagos to Abuja. |

rasidi, thanks! |
@All, Thanks. You can be sure that the folks at Etisalat will see this article, especially over at MobiNaija.com, since they have been made aware of the site. We are unable to send to them this article, among others, as that would constitute spamming. Regards! |
Mobile internet service has come of age in Nigeria. A few years ago when I got my first GPRS-enabled smartphone, most Nigerians had never heard of GPRS. Years down the road, demand for mobile internet service is a force that no serious operator ignores. From CDMA-based providers to GSM networks, each operator is waking up to the potentials of the mass of young Nigerians hungry for available, affordable and easy-to-use internet access. On the CDMA front, players like Starcomms, Visafone, multilinks and Reltel are pushing the boundaries of mobile internet service. Reltel, in particular is on the edge of the game by providing feature-laden smartphones at affordable prices for its subscribers, who are now able to use the internet directly on their devices, as well as on their PCs. Mobile internet on the GSM front was heated up with MTN’s recent bold moves. GloMobile has responded. Zain, typically, is neither here nor there. If history is anything to go by, the GSM mobile internet market is currently (and may always be) between MTN and GloMobile. However, the question some of us are asking at the moment is, “What is Etisalat up to?” As a new entrant, Etisalat needs to demonstrate that it understands the trends in the market. One clear trend is that mobile internet sells. Can and will they rise up to the task? Without a 3G licence, does Etisalat have any chance of making a bold imprint in the mobile internet sector? It is my opinion that they do. Setting up an EDGE-enabled network costs next to nothing compared to setting up a 3G-based network (licence fees inclusive). More interesting is the fact that modern EDGE networks deliver 3G speeds (384kbps theoretically). Etisalat can then later push for more advanced technology. As such, with the will, Etisalat can stamp its foot on the mobile internet market right from launch. With innovative pricing and/or incentives, Etisalat should have a segment of that market cornered easilly. Incentives can include free bundled internet access for every airtime recharge monthly, or affordable flat monthly data tariffs. But will Etisalat rise up to the occassion? We wait. @Eutelw4: Of course, there is a 3GB data cap on both 30-day plans. |
Eutelw4: No; the other packages are not programmed the same way. At least we can speak authoritatively of the 30-Day, All-Day bundle. It is programmed to run for 30 days. We use this package at the office, and though we subscribed about 2 weeks ago, we haven't been cut-off yet, a few days into another month. We hope we don't get to eat our words though .All days run 24 hours, so its easy to programme for 24 hours to start and terminate at a specific time. But some months are 31 days, some 30, some 29, and some 28. Programming the system to recognise months should pose a problem. |
Eutelw4: Sorry about your experience. The MTN Daily Bundle is programmed to run roughly a 24-hour window of midnight to the next midnight. Regardless of what time of the day you activate it, the package expires anytime after 12 midnight. At times there is a delay in expiration till even after 2am. Point: Do your activation after 12midnight or early in the morning when you get up from bed, and you'll get value. Yes; MTN ought to have explained all this in clear terms. Its a shame they haven't. |
Some not-too-good news from MobilityNigeria.com: On the heels of MTN’s announcement of bundle data packages has come complaints from a wide range of users that the supposedly 50mb package delivers much less than the touted 50mb data. What has been your experience? Read the full news item: MTN cheating subscribers on 50mb daily bundle? |
@initialize and infobaba: Your Zain SIM showing a 3G icon does not indicate an active 3G network. The capacity may have been built in, but like the gentleman asked, he is interested in videocalls now. In which case, he's still limited to MTN and Glo until Zain's 3G network goes live. If you'd like to contest this, please attempt to place a videocall on the Zain network now. Our team members have info and SIM cards on all GSM networks, and we say authoritatively that subscribers interested in videocalls now are limited to MTN and Glo. @infobaba: We seem to have a problem of English comprehension here. It is a fact that 3G services have to be activated on a SIM to enable videocalling or any 3G service for that matter. We have merely stated this fact. Now whether one network does it automatically (in this case MTN), or manually on request (in this case Glo) is another matter entirely. But the fact remains that activation must be done. There was no generalization in our earlier statement; just facts. |
