@dragnet: That's a good scenario! @Ascony: First, you need a 3G phone that is equipped for video calling. Not all 3G phones are. The N72 is not 3G, so you certainly need to get another phone. Secondly, you must be on a 3G network. At the moment, that limits you to MTN and Glomobile. Third, you must have the 3G settings of your network, and your SIM be activated to use those services. Once these conditions are met, simply select a contact on your phone and choose "video call". You hold the phone in front of you so that the front camera (the small one) is pointing at you. Once the call is connected, you'll see the face of the person you are calling on your phone's display. Just talk on - and watch your airtime! |
You may be right, but what about using it to track someone. You can actually use it to confirm someone's location. For example, if your child says he/she is with grandma, then u can video call and ask grandma to show face. Are you kidding? How about if you simply place a voice call, and ask your child to hand the phone to grandma so you can say hello ![]() |
Alireta Nigeria Limited is hunting for a web developer to be retained as a consultant. In other words, the individual is called upon only when his/her services are required. It would be nice if we all stayed on the topic. Apart from the thrill of seeing one another's face during a videocall, it does not seem that videocalling offers any real benefits to users on a daily basis. It could be useful in certain rare situations, but we've always wondered if there are any regular situations that a videocall would be expedient. Like MMS, videocalling is not likely to be taken up wholesale by everyday users. Or are we going to be proved wrong? Maybe if videocall tariffs were to drop to the same bracket as voice call tariffs - which is likely to happen only in anyone's dreams. |
MTN VideoCall Rates: XtraCool: 80k per sec XtraConnect: 82k per sec XtraPro: 67k per sec |
This afternoon, the Alireta mobility team tried out a video call on the MTN network. The call was initiated on a Samsung i780 from Ikeja, and terminated on a Nokia E71 at Yaba. The only issue experienced was a problem with initiating the call. After several dialling attempts, it finally went through. Video was clear and smooth generally. There was a slight momentary jerking, but it didn't persist. Sound over the connection and the speakerphones of the two devices was satisfactory as well. The call lasted 2 minutes and 3 seconds. In all, it was a good experience. Hopefully, the problem with getting a videocall initiated will be solved ASAP. Everyday users are certainly not going to be as persistent as we were in trying this out. |

As the mobile data sector matures in the country, it is important that individuals and organisations begin to explore ways and means of enhancing their business processes with these tools. By mobile data, we mean primarilly GPRS, EDGE, 3G, and 3.5G as deployed by the various GSm networks. Inclusive also would be CDMA 1x and EVDO as deployed by the PTOs. With extensive service coverage across Nigeria, the GSm networks especially hold the key to mass access to internet access and services. The implications are mind-blowing: with a data subscription on a GSM network, an individual has internet access not only in the state he resides but in every state of the Federation. The question now is: how do organisations and individuals harness this powerful potential and translate it into greater productivity and lower operating costs? Traditionally, it has been thought that that only web-based businesses have any use for mobile internet services. However, this is far from the truth. There are several ways in which organisations can innovatively deploy mobility to achieve their set goals. For example, last weekend in Lagos, an events management outfit in charge of various aspects of a classy wedding ceremony and reception effectively demonstrated the power of mobility in carrying out their duties. Key supervisors on the team were equipped with GPRS/EDGE/3G/3.5G-enabled smartphones, and kept tabs on things across vast distances via instant messaging. Communication was both seamless and cost-saving. Using instant messaging via 3G, instead of voice or SMS meant their operational costs were a mere fraction of what they would have been had they utilised more traditional means of communications. Effective, instantaneous communications and interactions for much less. This was a boost to the bottomline of the events management outfit at the end of the day. While the church wedding ceremony was still on, members of the team stationed at the church kept tabs on preparatory activities at the reception venue, passed on status reports, and relayed instructions - all via the use of mobile phones and technology. On a more vain note, consider also the "cool" factor. Guests and family members of the bride and groom were quite impressed with both how things went and with the uber-geek co-ordination of the day's activities. How can mobility benefit you? The first step is to sit down and list what you do, and how you presently do it. You may need to also speak with a mobility consultant for recommendations of how mobility can enhance your business processes. You will be reaping the fruits long after you have forgotten how much you invested in mobility. Remember: it often takes very small changes to make a BIG impact. |

This phone has been sold this morning. Thanks. |
@gesture: As the previous poster has said, u are not obligated to pay any tithe to anybody. One, the tithe was a commandment to Jews, and you are not a Jew. Two, Jesus put the Law away for good on the cross. Finally, if you will go through the passages that talk about tithes, you will find out that Biblically, tithes was not about money. Feel free to spend your money, and to help others with it. God bless. |
@Honsule: Its a funny thing, but its not just Nairalanders. On hundreds of forums and blogs, people jump into a discusion without following the thread of comments/posts at all. Not sure why though, but we see it all the time too. |
@HC: Actually, Celtel will activate/provision your line for packet data (GPRS/EDGE), but on only one condition: that you go to any of their centres with your SIM in your phone. You'll be browsing within 24 hours. |
While iWireless is good, the coverage is still quite limited. By the way, members of the Alireta team had an interesting experience this evening at work. On MTN 3G/3.5G, we regularly get between 280 and 400 kbps, with brief bursts of up to 500 (and on a few occassions 600) kbps when downloading or streaming video. It was amazing to witness the MTN connection deliver a brief burst that peaked at 2.74 mbps!! It was like time stood still for a few moments that the connection hovered/wavered there, before it dropped back to a steady 400 kbps. Of course, in comparison with MTN's nationwide coverage, 3G/3.5G coverage is pretty much limited to commercial centres for now. Where we advise caution is that MTN is yet to announce official 3G/3.5G plans and tariffs. |
While MTN is yet to release tariffs on its 3g/3.5G network, if you are on an MTN flat monthly subscription (N13,500 monthly), you can use 3G/3.5G where there is coverage. Here are results of downloads we have done with MTN 3G (the device used was not 3.5G enabled): 13mb file download: 8 minutes 57mb file download: 35 minutes 7.36mb file download: 11 minutes You can use MTN 3G with a USB modem, PCMCIA card, or your phone as a modem. This is the fastest peeds we have obtained yet on any internet connection in the country. Of course, there may be others. has any body used glo 3.5g network for internet connection, and how is the speed. At least one member of our team has used Glo 3G and has a fair report. Speeds are pretty much in the same range as MTN 3G/3.5G. Hope this helps. |

The Golden Rule: Never 'update' your ATM card details through ANY link in an email. If you really need to change your PIN, go to the issuing bank and ask for how to go about it. |

@Donseaun: what phone do you use, and what virus is on it? |
@hansibone: We are not talking about PC here. Regular PC viruses are totally harmless on a secure system like Symbian 9. Those viruses cannot run wild like they do on PC because of the platform's security. You have nothing to fear. Have you noticed that even when you want to browse with a proper 3rd app like Opere mini on a Symbian device, it asks for permission to connect? Without your permission, even legitimate apps won't function, muchless a malicious code. Yes, older Symbian platforms like v8 are not as secure as v9, and so are a bit susceptible, though they are still quite secure too. If you like, we can do a public demo: we'll let you beam as many regular PC viruses as you like to our Symbian v9 devices and see if any of them can run without the users granting permission. Let us know if you are interested. |
@tope_teadr: 07028828791 to reach any member of the Alireta team during office hours. In addition, you can reach Dayo on 08062167275, and Yomi on 08080752187. They are the core of our Mobile team. |
4peace: My conclusion is that you forget about anti-virus on your mobile phone for the time being. There are no real threats to your device if you stay away from hacked/cracked software. |
As interesting as all this is, the truth is that most phones (especially certain smartphoness) have no need of anti-virus. For example, Symbian 9 devices are built on such a secure core that there is simply no way for a virus to install itself on your device and run wild without the user's permission. So even if a virus gets on a Symbian 9 device, say via email, or bluetooth, it cannot run if I do not authorise it. Pretty much the same applies to Windows Mobile, though it is known to be less secure than Symbian at the moment. No-one really needs a mobile anti-virus. But then the companies behind them are trying to create a market for themselves on the ignorance of the consumer. Of course, if you use hacked software (which is totally not adviced or recommended by uss, chances that you will install a corrupted or re-engineered applications are there. Honestly, that would be your fault. Mobile anti-virus simply uses up part of your phone's already limited processing power, resulting in the kinds of problems some posters have mentioned. Our team have used Symbian devices for over 3 years, for: web browsing, corporate and personal email, downloads, bluetooth, and we have installed hundreds of applications. Not once has any member of the team been infected by a virus. INDUSTRY FACT: There are no known wild viruses for the Symbian 9 OS. Buy your smartphone, install apps from well-known sources, do not install anything you don't know about, and you are 100 % safe. We'll be delighted to answer any further questions. |
The lack of innovative strategies on the part of the network operators is probably the greatest single hindrance to the success of 3G services. It is a case of shooting oneself in the foot. We really do hope that Etisalat does makes a difference. @okoegwale, we were not aware that Etisalat secured a 3G licence. |
