fash78:I think i prefer the design in The very first picture. The one with a grey coloured frame that looks non metal. It's simple and still stylish |
gabbytabby:It shouldn't be a problem if It doesn't contravene any of the installation guidelines. The path along which the cable runs....( from the pole all the way to entering the meter) must be external and clearly visible . Multi unit apartment buildings that share a supply/service cable must have a Busbar Chamber or a similar stepup. There's no way around it. Long time Madam Gabby |

back2sender:Happy to help Chief. Your meters don't have to be together by the way, You can apply the fuse units method and still have your meters located anywhere you want. You just need to decide which is more efficient (neater, cost effective etc) for you. The key thing is the supply is going to go from one set of fuse units to the other (Using 16mm alum or even the same size of load cable if you still have some left) then go from the fuse units to the meter. So you're looking at 3 sets of fuse units (totalling 9) and 3 neutral connectors. If you had individual supply cables for all the meters it wouldn't be a must for the supply to enter the fuse units first. It can enter either the meters first or fuse units ( Which in this case act as phase changers or phase selectors) But since you have only one supply cables it cannot enter the meter first. |

back2sender:Yes, chief i believe you're mistaken. From your description what you are in need of is a Busbar Chamber. Busbar chambers can be used to distribute (so to speak) power to sections of a multi unit building when they share an incoming supply cable. That said, I honestly don't see the point of having a busbar for just 3 units of one-bed apartments. Unless of course you don't mind the expenditure. The smallest size of busbar commercially available is 100A , coming at 30-35k for Indian brands like Havells, and upwards of that for brands like ABB EATON etc. You can however find a way around it with the intelligent use of fuse units (cutout). If your elect is proactive. Are the meter points for the three units in the same location or is each situated in the individual apartment ? |
back2sender:You want a 3phase meter for each flat, but one Distribution board for all three. .. that is counter-intuitive . Distribution Boards are for internal circuitry. The type or number of distribution boards you have doesn't have anything to do with how you intended to do the servicing. Unless we're not talking about the same thing. |
InvertedHammer:That's what the statistics and maths say, unless you believe the authors are wrong. Yes I definitely understand. I am not even interested in the particulars...exact, approximate, annual or daily wages and all that. I just don't understand how it could possibly be up for debate that a country where even the cheapest skilled hand in the cheapest location won't earn less than $12 - $15 per hour is considered cheaper than Nigeria. These well sung "standard rates" are there for different locations. You are definitely right, the labour or skill inadequacy is a real problem . One that can be best addressed with a fully enforced licensing and qualification structure. An example is the existence of a body like LECAN ( Licensed Electrical contractors Association of Nigeria) back in the day you had to pass tests to qualify as a member, and they went on feild inspection on branch basis to new sites within the area to ascertain the quality of work. And any non LECAN member found performing or doing electircal jobs were tackled But now the story is different just about any tom can join, and inspections are just to collect egunje. Imagine If such a body was fully functional and people engaged only verified LECAN members, imagine how much it would improve the quality of electrical installations country wide. At bolded points to the pursuit of a better income ( higher labour rate) culminating in shoddy jobs. Which really isnt an excuse by the way, and shouldn't apply to a good mason or workman. A Higher pay won't guarantee better results if the workman in question is inadequate (lazy or unskilled) to start with. Which is where the benefits of having labour standards come in. Truth be told the standard of living considering the wage or pay back then was better. In the end, we have a big problem with Skill and Material Inadequacy. |
olumide4christ:Lol, at bolded. I'm really not suprised . Well in the end it is each to his own. I have elected to mind the business that pays me. |
You know you deserve it ....

FastShipping:My pleasure Chief |
FastShipping:While lightning arrestor setups are considered a luxury by some, it is one you should get if you can afford it. It is better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. Low buildings can get struck by lightning too. And if you have sensitive equipments it'll be a disaster. As for general earthing of Distribution boards sockets etc, that is not even up for discussion. It is an absolute necessity. |
skimanski:Abi na, my oga. In reality we are all consumers and suppliers at some level or the other. Everybody is selling either a service, skill or commodity. And everybody is also buying something. The difference is in the capacity and industry. We also all have the right to do what we consider in our best interest and in the manner that best suits us. |
EgunMogaji:Lol, this is baffling Chief. EgunMogaji:Again u put the cost of Labour before the quality of Labour.... This is where the conflict is . If there is a standard in labour quality, as obtains in other climes, it'll be very easy to set a standard for the fees, as there is a set, basis for comparison. Infact the consumers stand to gain more , I can collect as many quotes as I like and pick the most affordable, knowing that each and every quote will lead to the delivery of a good job. In the end it'll even make standard labour rates irrelevant. As some people will be willing to deliver at slightly less to get competitive edge. You also seem to forget that in other feilds outside of Electircal, I am also a consumer like you, and i know the natural need for good bargains. But This will not make me put the cart before the horse. |
EgunMogaji:No, i currently live in Nigeria and haven't had the luxury of getting a home in the US where I can hire a 6 digit plumber. But then, the question is not who i have not hired , but what the figures are. I no longer provide any paid services, and frankly i have no vested interests whatsoever in labour matters. my posts are solely academic and coversational |
EgunMogaji:And I absolutely agree, but which do you think is easier to Implement or regulate? The labour market or the material market. How can you set a standard fee for labour without a standard qualification or skill benchmark. there will be no basis for comparison |
FastShipping:I think you must be mistaken. Are you saying absolutely NO earthing was done? You didn't buy any earth rod or earth cables for the distribution boards etc ? |
EgunMogaji:Lol, no be fight na oga Eguns. I do not need to hire one to know. I also am very impressed with what it takes to be qualified as one. This is what we NEED!!!!
|
EgunMogaji:You're right Chief. My response was to this However EgunMogaji: |
kopell:Lol my oga u know that your case is like one in four dozen. If we're talking on the larger scale, How many people pay thier skilled techicians that much. And this one's are skilled technicians o not labour hands. I don't think a licensed and trained plumber or Carpenter will be paid $25 per day in the US It is definitely unfortunate if people get paid for good work but in turn do not deliver the value expected. |
EgunMogaji:You spoke about cost comparison which is exactly what this is about, I have no intentions of debating one country over the other |
desiji:Your post only lends more to the fact that it it easier for an average person to get those things in place over there, than it is in the Nigeria. It's easier to earn $25 working in the US than it is to earn N9000 working in Nigeria ( heck more than 70% of Nigerian graduates earn less per day) The dispute is in the cost of getting the same quality of job and or buying the same item here vs over there. Skilled labour is cheap in Nigeria, in comparison to the west even though i agree that in most cases the expertise will vary. @ bolded is the reason why I made the earlier post about what our building industry truly needs. A unification of standard Each environment has it's peculiarities |
EgunMogaji:At $25 ( approx N9000) per day, I'm sure you can get julius berger level artisans in Nigeria. Afterall the Julius berger works aren't done by expatriates they're done by our local artisans with the requisite training. Again, any material that isn't manufactured in The US or North America is more likely to be cheaper in Nigeria than it is in the US. The problem will be finding it. |
FastShipping:Are you talking about general earthing (of sockets, Distribution Boards etc) or just that associated with the lightning arrestor ? |
