Islam for Muslims / The Battle Of Karbala by AloyEmeka9: 11:47pm On Dec 23, 2009
Why did the children of prophet Muhammad fight over his properties?. Are they not supposed to show examples of piety and humility?. Read more on the battle of karbala below:

The Battle of Karbala took place on Muharram 10, in the year 61 of the Islamic calendar (October 9 or 10, 680)[2][3] in Karbala, in present day Iraq. On one side were supporters and relatives of Muhammad's grandson Husayn ibn Ali; on the other side was a military detachment from the forces of Yazid I, the Umayyad caliph.
Husayn ibn Ali's group consisted of notable members of Muhammad's close relatives, around 128, of whom some were either old (90+ years) or young (6 months). Husayn and some members of his group were accompanied by some of the women and children from their families. On the opposing side, the armed forces of Yazid I were led by Umar ibn Sa'ad.
The reason for the battle was Yazid's insistence that Husayn accept him (ie Yazid) as the righteous and undisputed ruler. Husayn was no ordinary person. Grandson of the prophet, he was widely accepted as the most pious throughout his life. A seal from such a personality would have given a kiss of life to Yazid's unlawful power grab. Both were well aware of this. Yazid chose to use the state power to first deny access to water and food for three days to Husayn and his family (including women and children) and when Husayn still insisted on his stance of not providing legitimacy to Yazid's rule, told Husayn that he would be killed. Husayn chose that. He and his followers were killed by the forces of Yazid during the 1 day battle in Karbala. The captured women were tortured, mocked and made an example of. In the end though, these women, through their speeches were able to turn the tables on Yazid.
This battle also had significant effects on the formation of revolts against the Umayyad dynasty.[4]
The battle of Husayn ibn Ali is commemorated during an annual 10-day period held every Muharram by the Shi'ah as well as many Sunnis, culminating on its tenth day

Shia muslims in Kabul flagellate themselves during muharam as they mark the death of Imam hussain-grandson of the prophet muhammad- at the battle of karbala in 680AD.
Politics / Bloody Clashes In Central Nigeria by AloyEmeka9: 11:41pm On Dec 23, 2009
Nigeria herders and farmers clash in central Nasarawa.

At least 30 people have been killed in clashes between herders and farmers in Nigeria's central Nasarawa State, witnesses say.
Local people have described armed men driving from house to house shooting. Farms and homes have been destroyed in the remote village of Udenin Gida.
The fighting follows weeks of tensions between the two groups. Nasarawa is in Nigeria's "Middle Belt" where rival ethnic groups often clash over land and other resources.
Reporters who have visited the village say they counted up to 50 dead bodies, many of whom they say are women and children.

The village is now under the control of the police. BBC Nigeria correspondent Caroline Duffield says the conflict between ethnic Fulani herders and farmers has been partially caused by climate change. Environmentalists say the Sahara Desert is creeping south by as much as 10 miles (16km) a year.
This has increased competition between rival groups for access to land.

Did I not just tell you they were basically the same with other private unis?

No they are not. You cannot compare the fees at Igbinedion university with the ones in Covenant university.

viaro:

Well, I often hear about that (please pardon my not knowing that much in reality).

People often say that; but I'm just wondering - How do we separate 'profit' from the high fees - or, how are the 'high fees' meant to be understood?.

Let me put it like this: there are indeed some Universities that are 'for-profit', an example being the University of Phoenix (UPX) in North America which is 'a private for-profit institution of higher learning' (Wikipedia). Some other universities are 'not for profit' institutions; e.g., the University of St. La Salle, apart from being a Catholic private university, is also a 'non-stock and non-profit corporation' (see Wikipedia again).

Now, one wonders where the Oyedepo's example falls into - a 'for-profit' or 'non-profit' institution?

Covenant university is a non profit institution like St La Selle catholic university.

I deliberately chose both examples above to reflect the fact of a university governed by religious principles (as in the case of La Salle University). But if you consider another example in context of the 'world standard' that you have talked about, then consider Stanford University and this report below:
Aloy, this question concerning Oyedepo's university is not all that important as to cause a furor for me. In issues like this, while appreciating the effort for local pastors in Nigeria to help the education needs in the country, there must be some catch in terms of profit (whether or not they keep selling the disclaimer of being a 'not-for-profit' university). Does Oyedepo's university not hope to expand sometime in the future? If yes, how do they hope to do so - by making no profit whatsoever? Can we trust that same university by Oyedepo's effort to be as honest as the example above of Stanford University in acknowledging "increase in revenue"?

These are questions
that make me wonder where to draw the line between 'profit' and 'charity' in the example of Oyedepo's university. Can you help?

They hope to expand from the efforts made by their benefactors. How did they build the university in the first place?. Was it not benefactors who paid for it?. How will St laselle catholic university expand since they are non profit?

I don't understand, Aloy. Are you trying to say that Oyedepo's university makes no profit whatsoever, even in trying to meet world standards? How do we separate 'profit' from the high fees - or, how are the 'high fees' meant to be understood? undecided
The high fees is to maintain world class standards. Don't you know the government subsidize our federal and state universities?

Mom Calls Cops Over Son's Video Game Habit

Published : Tuesday, 22 Dec 2009, 7:38 AM EST

(NewsCore) - Boston police department has responded to an emergency call from a frazzled mom who could not get her 14-year-old son to stop playing video games.

Two officers were scrambled to the family home in Roxbury in the early hours of Saturday and convinced the boy to obey his mother, end his marathon session of Grand Theft Auto and go to bed.

Angela Mejia told the Boston Herald , "I would never buy that kind of video game. No way. I called (police) because if you don't respect your mother, what are you going to do in your life?"

Boston PD spokesman Joe Zanoli admitted in a statement to reporters that the call was unusual, but not unsurprising given the popularity of video games.

I hope you know that it is criminals like your Bishop Oledepo that this thread is refering too, yet you have the presence of mind to be defending him when it is very obvious he is the chief culprit.

But the missionaries were able to provide [and still do] high quality free/ subsidized education to our parents and grandparents which has been a blessing to our generations unborn. ANd it was church funds that was used to build and maintain these instituitions. Today the what charlartans like Oledepo are doing is to profit from it after deceiving his church members to contribute to the project giving them the impression he was doing it for God, yet he can't even offer the real financiers of the school who gave sacrificially to the establishment of the conglomerate scholarship or subsidies to their children. I also hear he charges exhorbitantly in the school clinic / hostipals which form a part of his conglomerate eyt he claims to be doing God's work, does he read his bible at all[if he truly as one]? I laugh in ota tongues.

Oyedepo is not the only pastor who has a private jet in Nigeria. Stop hating and be happy that God blessed him. You too can be blessed like him. Do you have any proof that he makes profit from Covenant university or the associated clinics?

Why are the fees at par or even more than secular universities like igbinedion and co who are out to make profits?

I had course mates who in the course of their studies lost their parents and were subsequently kicked outta school because they couldn't afford the fees. . . .tell me, is that what jesus woulda done?

Oyedepo's university is not a profit making venture, I swear. Maintaining a university to meet world standards is not cheap.

Tiger Woods sponsor u-turns to stand by him as he reportedly rekindles relationship with Rachel Uchitel

AFP From: AFP December 23, 2009 1:04PM 37 comments

UPDATE 1.40pm: A MAJOR sponsor has backtracked and now emphatically stands behind Tiger Woods despite further reports of infidelity.

A new report has emerged alleging that Woods and New York club hostess Rachel Uchitel have resumed their relationship.

In Touch magazine reports on its website that Woods, who turns 34 next week, has been seeing Uchitel, 34, in Florida near where his yacht Privacy is docked.

The magazine, quoting an unnamed friend of Uchitel, reported Woods is still involved with Uchitel, who was in the same Melbourne hotel as Woods when he was there for the Australian Masters last month.

"They have been sleeping together the entire time since the scandal broke," the source told In Touch.

"They hooked up in a condo she has been staying at in Palm Beach.

"She's madly in love with him and she believes that he loves her as well."

It was a tabloid report about Uchitel's relationship with Woods two days before the crash that set the stage for the firestorm which has followed.

Uchitel had called a news conference earlier this month but cancelled, reportedly after being paid more than $US1 million ($A1.14 million) by Woods for her silence.

Woods has admitted cheating on wife Elin while at least 14 women have claimed to have had affairs with him.

Elin has reportedly hired a Hollywood divorce attorney with possible losses for Woods, a 14-time major champion, in a divorce deal including estimates of more than $US300 million ($A342.4 million).

His estranged wife is also seeking custody of their children, two-year-old daughter Sam and 10-month-old son Charlie.

Meanwhile, four days after Tag Heuer announced it was pulling images of Woods from US advertising, the Swiss watchmaker appears to have decided the time is right to back Woods.

Tag Heuer's website home page has a huge photograph of Woods with the words "Tag Heuer stands with Tiger Woods" and a link to a news release from last week saying the ad pullback was a supportive move since Woods has announced an indefinite hiatus from golf to work on his personal issues.

The move mirrors one made earlier by razor manufacturer Gillette but falls short of the full sponsorship cut made by consulting giant Accenture.
