Hello everyone, I'm Also a silent reader and I've learnt a lot from this thread. Advise is needed from the gurus. I graduated from university of lagos earlier this year with a bsc in psychology, I'm currently serving and hopefully when I'm done i would apply for usa student visa, I am interested in Healthcare I have researched extensively on the different courses i could do and i narrowed it down to three courses which is nursing (accelerated bsn), physician assistant (PA) and occupational therapy (OT), please i want to know if it's okay because i heard anyone can apply for any course provided he/she fulfill the prerequisites. Do i apply for the prerequisites first in any community College? Or how is it done? Which exams are necessarily so I'd write them before applying? What are other necessary preparations? I'd really appreciate if someone could take his/her time to reply my questions as this would be my first time of applyingy. Thanks in advance. |

Good evening doctors.. Theres this pain in my lower left abdomen to the side that has been coming and going for the past few weeks... Especially when i push my stomach out.. It doesn't really hurt normally until i adjust my stomach to a particular position... It started when i was ill about a month ago... I went to the hospital and went through ultra scan.. But the doctor said my kidneys were okay..... The pain came back few weeks after my illness and stopped on its own.. Now it's back on the same particular spot and I'm scared it might be something serious |

imperiouxx: It's good to hear you like to be a PA. Yes, you don't need to have a science degree to jump in. But the crazy thing about PA admission is that each requirement is different from one program to the other. Currently there are 165 international student friendly PA programs but I'm telling you, they all have different prereqs requirement. Though a lot have changed in the admission requirement since I was applying. What I used to know as a pre-pa was that most of the requirements are required to be done in U.S but if this is still strongly enforced, I don't know.
You can start writing any of those 165 programs you like and ask about their prereqs and patient care experience requirement for international students. If you're already in U.S studying, this might be more easy for you in terms of getting patient care exp and prereqs done because the term 'international student' for some programs means those non citizen student already in U.S on F1 visa.
My other worry is if PA admission would be appreciated by VOs as it should have been because PA degree confines you to work only in U.S, Canada, U.K, Spain and Netherlands. Though, there are few African countries that have PA in their healthcare team, e.g Tanzania, Uganda etc but I bet these African countries can't even support their own citizens.
I'm going to post some resources for you if that would help.
165 International student friendly PA programs in U.S
Read this before you start. I won't worry about International Medical Graduate (img) stressed throughout the page
I found this program requirements average and they didn't state if the prereqs should be done in U.S or not. You can write them
The PA education directory
And we have a 20 years old PA forum. You may want to open a thread there for your questions
Most important: Don't forget that this course is an accelerated type and very rigorous, you can't work not even on campus, your total tuition would be more than $100,000, no graduate assistantship and admission process seems to be tedious.
Best! thanks for taking your time to explain... $100,000 is quite expensive damn..... Please what about rn.... I would appreciate if you could help me with the info.. I heard theres accelerated program for rn that i won't need to do 4 years bsc in nursing....I researched occupational therapy too... I'm just confused right now.... One of the reasons why i want to switch is because it takes too long to become a professional clinical psychologist.. And probably much money as well.... So I'm torn between rn and occupational therapy now... Please i need your advice.... Physician assistant is my preferred choice but the tuition fee is outrageous lol.... You can reply at your convinience... Thanks |

imperiouxx: This is not for you, PRincessUy but for whoever clicked 'like' for that your post. I see that some garbage people can quickly click like for any nonsense comment posted here. What she said in that post makes no sense and shouldn't warrant any like unless you're a nonsense being.
Now, this is for you. Like I told, career-wise, microbiology (applied science) is unrelated with nursing (healthcare). The only courses you would have taken before, which are also required for nursing are basic maths, general chemistry and general biology. Microbiology student (either bs or ms) don't do psychology, human anatomy & physiology and sociology. All of which are required before entry into direct msn program. This is what I mean by the vo knows you will need some prereqs to start msn and so he wasn't asking you about why you don't go for a masters in nursing. He was asking why are you going from one BS to another BS and not masters (microbiology).
Those repreqs I listed there are not part of microbiology (msc) curriculum. They can only be taken outside microbiology department in any school at anytime. For you to know I know what I'm telling you, I did my bachelors in biochemistry in Nigeria (took many classes with micro students), I did my masters in biochemistry in US (took advanced microbial physiology with micro students), I did my Post Bac for prereqs for PA school after my masters. And I did it in a large class that consist of all healthcare/medical students but no science major students. Now I'm doing masters in PA, this is the only time I don't take any courses with nurses because mine is medical field. In the nearest future if you want to do a direct msn program, you will have to follow the steps I followed.
If at this point you're still not clear, God help you when you're facing similar question next time. Hello.. I have a bachelors in psychology and I'm wanna study MSc in physician assistant.. Traditionally I'm not a science student but i read somewhere that irrespective of your major, you can apply to study PA so far you fulfill the prerequisites.. Please can you shed more light on this.. |
