AjaanaOka: When Igbo people discuss the slave trade in Igboland and the methods by which Igbo slaves were procured, the premium position is always given to the Abam-Edda raids organized by the Aro traders. It is puzzling why raids seem to be the first thing that comes to the Igbo mind when slavery is mentioned, especially given the fact that academic scholarship since at least the 1970s (by historians like Adiele Afigbo) has established that raids were the LEAST important means of procuring slaves in Igboland. It appears to me that our eagerness to dump the whole enterprise at the feet of the Abam raids comes from our unwillingness to take collective responsibility for the unfortunate inhumane venture. But in doing this we end up with a very skewed understanding of Igbo history during the Atlantic Age. The four principal means by which slaves were obtained from among the Igbo in pre-colonial times were (in this order):
1. Kidnapping 2. Sale by parents/relatives or the clan 3. Oracular ‘consultations’ or the use of the oracles, chief of which was Ubini Ukpabi 4. Abam/Edda raids (least important) Of all the notable Igbo slaves whose accounts have come down to us (Olaudah Equiano, Akeiso or Florence Hall, Ofodobendo Wooma or Archibald Monteith, Josua of Umoque [Umuokwe], Thomas O’Connor or Aneke, Jaja of Opobo, David Okparabietoa Pepple, Mgbeke of Umuoji, Kalu Eke of Ohafia, etc), only ONE of them (Josua of Umoque) was captured in a war-style raid. The rest were kidnapped by local gangs or sold by their own people. In the 19th century, the Reverend Sigismund Koelle interviewed ex-slaves of Igbo origin in Sierra Leone and recorded the means by which they were enslaved. Again, the place of raids was insignificant, as virtually all of them were enslaved by the other three means listed.
KIDNAPPING: Kidnapping was by far the most common means of enslavement. People going to the stream or into the woods to gather firewood (especially if they did not go in large groups for safety) could be ambushed by a kidnapping gang and never be heard of again. The kidnapping gang were not always Aro. Often they were just people from a nearby village; but they invariably had Aro contacts who they quickly sold their ‘merchandise’ to. These kidnapping gangs could be quite bold. When adults and parents were away at the farm or in the market, they could actually sneak into the village, climb over compound walls and carry away children who were left unattended. In an effort to curb this kind of ‘right-inside-the-village’ kidnapping, many Igbo families started a practice where they would herd their children together in one person’s compound, under the supervision of one or more adults, when they needed to go the market or a far-away farm. But there were still stubborn children who wouldn’t stay with the herd and would wander off on their own and fall into the hands of kidnappers. A common stratagem used by kidnappers to lure such a stubborn (and long-throated) child who had wandered away from the herd was to present him with a delicacy, like fish, promising to give him more if he followed them. Once they had gotten a safe distance away from houses and watching adults and were in the bush, the child would be gagged, tied up and put in a sack.
SECOND – SALE BY PARENTS/RELATIVES OR THE CLAN: Despite the saying “Nwa ka ego”, many Igbo families were disposing of some of their children for financial reasons. This happened more in areas where population density was very high and the agricultural productivity of the soil was markedly low, such as the Isuama and the Agbaja areas. When people in those areas could not raise enough food on their scarce impoverished soil to feed their family, or when drought and famine hit, it was not uncommon for them to sell some of their children (usually the troublesome ones) in order to have less mouths to feed and money to purchase needed resources for the rest. Ofodobendo Wooma (Archibald Monteith) mentioned above was given by his guardian (who was his elder brother) to a man as collateral for two goats purchased on credit; when his elder brother could not pay for the goats, the man sold Ofodobendo. That sort of thing was not uncommon. But there were some cold-blooded men who sold their children to be able to afford what we might call ‘frivolities’, such as titles! Babies who ‘committed abomination’ by having the misfortune of cutting their upper teeth first or coming out of the womb feet first, were invariably handed over to the Aro as well. A whole clan/community could also come together to sell off a notorious troublemaker, criminal, rapist, or adulterer. In the absence of a prison system, enslavement was a workable alternative.
THIRD – ORACLES: Oracular consultations come in third on the list of means of slave procurement in Igboland. While this was an important slave acquisition pathway as well, British propaganda appears to have blown its importance out of proportion. In order to explain their obsession with blowing up shrines and oracles, they widely reported that these oracles were nothing but a front for the slave business. Amadioha Ozuzu, Igwekaala Umunoha, Agbala Awka, Ubini Ukpabi Arochukwu, et cetera, were far more than a front for the slave business. Clients poured to their groves for a myriad of reasons and with myriads of petitions – from requests for children or success in farming or trading, to land disputes, to murder trials. It was often people ‘convicted’, rightfully or wrongfully, of more heinous crimes (like murder or sorcery) who were - in the case of Ubini Ukpabi, for instance - sold downriver (after a show had been made with faux human blood in the water to fake his killing by the oracle); and these formed only a fraction of the total supplicants who passed through these oracular shrines.
FOURTH – THE MUCH-TOUTED EDDA/ABAM RAIDS: The first thing to understand about the Cross River warriors is that they were headhunters, not exactly a disciplined military force in the actual sense. Their primary goal during violent confrontations was to obtain human heads to take back home as trophies and increase their standing in their own society. Their martial system was designed for that purpose: getting human heads. Headless bodies were of no use to the Aro slaver, who needed living healthy people that he could sell. But the Edda/Abam system was not designed for taking captives. The strategy was usually simple: Launch a surprise attack on a village; Fall upon them when they were unprepared, usually early in the morning; Get your heads; Go home.
Any slaves that this means of procurement yielded were comparatively meagre. When you also consider the fact that hiring a band of Cross River headhunters was a long, tedious and expensive affair, you’ll begin to wonder, Why did the Aro even bother at all with them? For example, the Aro merchant, Ikelionwu Ufele had to live in Ohafia for seven years and marry an Ohafia woman before he could get the Ohafia elders to sell him the services of their young warriors. In the 19th century, an Uruagu-Nnewi chief called Eze Orimmili wanted to hire Ohafia warriors through the Aro. By the time the negotiations and all the lengthy protocol were done, Eze Orimmili had dead, and the war band that he was trying to hire finally set out in the time of his successor, Eze Okonkwo!
Again, one would ask: Why did the Aro bother using these Cross River warriors for slave procurement at all if the yield in terms of slaves was comparatively small and the hiring process so tedious? Simple answer: The Aro did not hire the Edda/Abam headhunters primarily for the purpose of slave procurement. The Aro were more likely only to reach out to their headhunting allies when a community was perceived as a threat to their commercial interests, and they felt the only way to reach a resolution was through a show of violence. Any slaves that came out of it, was merely a welcome byproduct. There are many examples that illustrate this. For example, when the Aro merchant Okori Torti and his brother Wosu Torti sent Abiriba warriors against the town of Obegu, it was not to obtain slaves. Obegu and Akwete, egged on by the Ijaw and the Europeans, were beginning to threaten Aro interests in that axis. The raid was to teach Obegu a lesson. Again, when the Aro warlord Okoli Ijoma sent a combined Edda-Ohafia war band against Awka, it was not to obtain slaves. Awka was denying Okoli and his men access to the road which passed through Awka to the Adegbe and Omambala areas, where Okoli Ijoma had significant commercial and political interests. Feeling his hegemony in the Omambala Valley threatened, Okoli Ijoma began planning an invasion of the town.
The Aro would also frequently hire Edda/Abam warriors on behalf of other communities that needed them in resolving their own local conflicts with their neighbours, for cash. An example was the Eze Orimmili case. During the Awka Civil War of the 19th century, one side in the conflict also tried to buy the services of these Cross River warriors through the Aro chief Okoli Ijoma. In fact, there are so many examples of the Aro hiring Cross River headhunters on behalf of other communities, scattered from Nsukka in the north to the deep south, that it would appear that the Aro bought the services of these headhunters, more for clients who needed them than for themselves.
It is often not remembered that the Aro were traders in other items that weren’t slaves. They traded in guns and gunpowder, European metal and textiles, sea salt and fish from the coast; woven and dyed textiles from Igala, Nsukka and Ezillo, brine salt from Okposi and Uburu, horses, cattle, beads and potash from the North, et cetera. European textiles and a species of cocoyam became known as Ekwa Eru (Aro cloth) and Ede Eru (Aro cocoyam) respectively in the hinterland, because they were spread through the agency of the Aro commercial network. Uburu, Okposi, Bende and Uzuakoli became big fairs under Aro patronage. Igboland was crisscrossed by Aro-sponsored trade routes. All this would not have been possible if the Aro were perpetually deploying slave raids in the area for the procurement of slaves. Commerce of this nature does not thrive in chaos. A sort of paradoxical "Aro Peace" - Pax Aroica - was important for the Aro system to flourish. And the Aro were well aware of this. In the 19th century, Aro traders from the Amokwe-Udi area sent a delegation to Okoli Ijoma to register their distaste for his unusually war-like disposition, which was not good for business.
The parts of sub-Saharan Africa where slave procurement was principally by the means of raids show markedly low population densities. A classic example from Nigeria is the scantily settled Middle Belt, whose pagan tribes were ravaged in the 19th century by Muslim slave raiders from the far north, and were forced to flee the low-lying lands for better-fortified hills. The mere fact that Igboland emerged into the 20th century as among the most densely populated parts of Africa demonstrates that the role of slave raids in Igbo Atlantic history has been sorely exaggerated. Isuama, which was arguably the premier source of Igbo slaves in the latter part of the 18th century and the 19th century is even more densely populated than much of the rest of the Igbo area. One would expect an adverse negative demographic effect, going by the much-touted Abam savage raids. Less-destructive methods like kidnapping and voluntary sale by kinsmen (which dominate in the Igbo slave narratives that have come down to us) could ‘shave off’ the excess population without sending the demography into reverse, and this is precisely what happened.

Glimpsetv: Nigerian singer Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba (formerly 2Face Idibia), was recently spotted shopping with his new companion, Honorable Natasha, at Seyi Vodi’s Atelier in Abuja.

Location has been the issue with this business. I am seriously looking up to set up a Lounge, Bar and Restaurant that I want to expand from the Island to the Mainland. I cannot believe I have been searching for property to purchase around Sangotedo/Eputu/Lakowe Axis for 3 Months now without success. It is either the properties have no Valid Documents or they fall under Government Acquired Land. I never knew the Government Held so much land in my life. Land they do not have plans for, and even if they do, they hardly execute in an aesthetically pleasant way.
You did analyses on only beer as a drink. This is the one that gives the least profit in the business, from my analyses. More money is made on wines and spirits than beer. Also, if you make it a Bar, Lounge and Restaurant, a lot of profit is made from the food sales.

Hybrid600: A five-year-old Australian boy has survived being bitten, constricted and dragged into a swimming pool by a python about three times his size.
Beau Blake was enjoying a swim at home when the 3m long (10ft) reptile struck, his father told a local radio station.
The pair - still entangled - were pulled from the pool by Beau's grandfather and the boy was prised free from the animal by his dad Ben.
But Beau is in good spirits and escaped with only minor injuries.
"Once we cleaned up the blood and told him that he wasn't going to die because it wasn't a poisonous snake... he was pretty good actually," his father Ben told Melbourne radio station 3AW on Friday about the incident that happened a day earlier.
"He's an absolute trooper," Ben added, saying the family - who are based in the coastal town of Byron Bay in New South Wales - would monitor the bite wounds for signs of infection.
Despite the lucky escape, the dramatic saga was still quite "an ordeal", he said.
"[Beau] was just walking around the edge [of the pool]... and I believe the python was sort of sitting there waiting for a victim to come along... and Beau was it."
"I saw a big black shadow come out of the bush and before they hit the bottom, it was completely wrapped around his leg."
With "no self-preservation whatsoever", Beau's 76-year-old grandfather Allan jumped in the pool and passed the boy and snake to Ben.
"I'm not a little lad... [so] I had him released within 15-20 seconds," Ben said.
Ben then held on to the python for about 10 minutes as he desperately tried to calm his children and his father, before releasing the snake back into the vegetation.
"He went back to the scene of the crime, the naughty thing."
Ben told the radio station pythons were a fact of life in the area, about 8 hours north of Sydney, saying "look...it is Australia".
