The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned Victor Ekpong Thompson before the Federal High Court sitting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, over the alleged defrauding of several American citizens of $525,276.

Thompson was docked on Thursday, January 29, 2026, before Justice Maureen Adaobi, where he faced an eight-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

According to the Uyo Zonal Directorate of the EFCC, the defendant allegedly deceived his victims by claiming he would facilitate investments in mineral resource mining and deep seaport development projects.

One of the charges read in court stated that Thompson, between April 2024 and December 2024, within the jurisdiction of the court, fraudulently obtained $213,350 from the victims under false pretences. The offence was said to contravene provisions of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act, 2006.

The EFCC alleged that Thompson acted with intent to defraud by falsely representing the existence and viability of the purported investment ventures.

When the charges were read to him, the defendant pleaded not guilty to all counts.

Following his plea, the prosecution counsel, Joshua Abolarin, urged the court to remand the defendant in a correctional facility and fix a date for the commencement of trial.

However, defence counsel, Savn Daniel, made an oral application for bail, which was opposed by the prosecution.

After listening to arguments from both sides, Justice Adaobi adjourned the matter to March 19, 2026, for ruling on the bail application and commencement of trial. Pending the court’s decision, the judge ordered that Thompson be remanded at the EFCC detention facility in Uyo.

The Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development has dismissed claims by the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) that the Federal Government is planning to site a gold refinery in Lagos, describing the allegation as false and misleading. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

The NEF, in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Prof. Abubakar Jiddere, had alleged that locating a gold refinery in Lagos violated the federal character principle, suggesting government involvement in the project.

However, reacting to the claim in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, the Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Mr Segun Tomori, faulted the position of the Northern elders, insisting that the Federal Government neither owns nor established any gold refinery in Lagos.

Tomori clarified that the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, never announced the establishment of a government-owned gold refinery in Lagos or anywhere else in the country.

According to him, the refinery referenced by the NEF is a private initiative undertaken by Kian Smith, a privately owned mining company.

“At no point did Dr Dele Alake state that the Federal Government owns or established a gold refinery in Lagos,” Tomori said.

“The refinery in question is a private venture, and government cannot dictate to a private investor where to locate its business.”

He further explained that the minister had clearly stated that several other gold refineries are in development across the country, all of which are privately owned by different investors.

FG Explains Value-Addition Policy

Tomori noted that the Lagos-based gold refinery reflects the Federal Government’s value-addition policy in the solid minerals sector, which aims to discourage the export of raw minerals and promote local processing and manufacturing.

He described the refinery as an initiative of Kian Smith, led by its founder and Managing Director, Ms Nere Emiko, commending her perseverance and leadership in delivering the project.

“The Federal Government acknowledges the resilience and enterprise of the company’s leadership in bringing a flagship project of this magnitude to fruition,” he added.

The ministry also highlighted other major private-sector investments stimulated by recent reforms in the solid minerals sector, including:

A $600 million lithium processing plant in Nasarawa State

A $400 million rare earth minerals plant also in Nasarawa

A $200 million ASBA lithium plant in Abuja

According to Tomori, these projects have attracted significant foreign investment, created thousands of jobs, and strengthened Nigeria’s non-oil revenue base.

Tomori said reforms introduced by the Ministry over the past two years had created an enabling environment for private-sector participation in mining, adding that projects like the Lagos gold refinery demonstrate the success of those reforms.

He urged the Northern Elders Forum to support ongoing efforts by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to diversify the economy and promote self-reliance.

“The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development will continue to encourage mining companies to establish processing and manufacturing plants across Nigeria,” he said.

“We urge the NEF to join hands with the Federal Government in building a stronger, self-reliant economy that serves the interest of all Nigerians.”

A multiple-vehicle accident on Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Sunday caused severe traffic congestion, leaving hundreds of motorists stranded for several hours.

The accident, which occurred in the afternoon along the inbound Mowe axis, involved an overturned flour-laden truck, a Toyota Corolla, a Toyota RAV4 SUV, and two fully loaded interstate Mazda buses. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a series of updates shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle. According to the agency, the articulated truck lost balance and fell on its side, triggering a chain collision that blocked multiple lanes of the busy expressway.

“A multiple-vehicle crash involving a truck that fell on its side, a Corolla, an SUV (RAV4), and two loaded interstate Mazda buses has been reported on Kara Bridge inwards Mowe,” LASTMA stated.

Eyewitnesses said the crash immediately brought traffic to a standstill, with the resulting gridlock stretching as far back as Magodo and the Secretariat axis, while spill-over congestion affected Omole Junction and Ogunnusi Road.

In a follow-up update, LASTMA confirmed that emergency responders and traffic officials were swiftly deployed to the scene. Efforts focused on offloading the spilled flour from the fallen truck and removing the damaged vehicles to restore traffic flow.

“As transloading efforts are ongoing, all necessary resources are on the ground to ensure safety and good traffic flow,” the agency added.

LASTMA later announced that partial recovery of the vehicles involved had been completed, with more than one lane reopened to ease vehicular movement on the expressway.

A Nigerian traditional ruler and United States-based academic, Prof. Ekelekamchukwu Alphonsus Ngwadom, has been convicted and sentenced for Medicaid fraud in the United States after admitting to billing minors for mental health services that were never provided. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Ngwadom, 61, is a psychotherapist and Professor of Psychology and Sociology at the University of Mount Olive, North Carolina. He is also the traditional ruler of Mbubu, Amiri Kingdom in Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State, having ascended the throne in 2021 following the death of his father.

The North Carolina Attorney General, Jeff Jackson, announced on January 13, 2025, that Ngwadom pleaded guilty to 27 counts of obtaining property by false pretenses.

According to court records, Ngwadom was sentenced to 12–34 months imprisonment, which was suspended and replaced with 36 months of supervised probation. The sentence includes 90 days of house arrest, 100 hours of community service, and a restitution payment of $72,014.66 to Alliance Health.

Jackson described Medicaid fraud as a serious crime, stating that it diverts public funds from vulnerable individuals who depend on essential healthcare services.

Between February 2020 and March 2021, Ngwadom submitted fraudulent claims totaling $72,014.66 to Alliance Health, a North Carolina-managed healthcare organization overseeing Medicaid and state-funded plans.

The claims were submitted through Almarch Counseling Services, a company owned by Ngwadom, and involved 27 Medicaid patients, including minors, for therapy sessions that investigators later determined never took place.

Alliance Health’s internal integrity unit flagged the unusual billing activity, prompting an investigation by the Attorney General’s Medicaid Integrity Division, the North Carolina Department of Justice, and the State Bureau of Investigation.

Investigators found that parents of several minors denied ever receiving services from Ngwadom, despite records showing dozens of claims submitted in their names.

In court, prosecutor Tracy Grimes revealed that Ngwadom claimed the services were provided under an after-school programme that was not operational during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Grimes further stated that some families declined Ngwadom’s offers of home-based services, yet billing continued in their names, preventing the children from accessing care from their actual providers.

Ngwadom’s defence attorney, Lauren Toole, argued that the offences occurred during a period of financial hardship following the pandemic, which resulted in the foreclosure of her client’s home.

“He made a serious mistake and accepts responsibility,” Toole told the court.

As part of his plea agreement, Ngwadom was required to surrender his professional counselling licences. He has since taken out a second mortgage to assist with restitution payments and secured alternative employment.

During sentencing, Ngwadom emotionally admitted guilt and apologised to the court, describing the incident as uncharacteristic of him.

The presiding judge, Winston Gilchrist, denied the prosecution’s request for immediate imprisonment but warned that Ngwadom would serve up to three years in prison if he violates probation terms.

Ngwadom was crowned on April 16, 2021, shortly after the burial of his father, the late HRH Sir Eze Alphonsus Ngwadom (Obianoekwu III). He currently holds the title HRH Sir Eze Alphonsus Obianokwu IV of Mbubu Amiri Kingdom.

At the time of his coronation, community leaders had described him as educated, globally exposed, and capable of driving development in the kingdom.
