A fatal collision at Egbe Bridge summit, inward Ikotun, has claimed the life of a tricycle operator and left two passengers with severe injuries, after a Toyota Venza rammed into the tricycle in a reckless overtaking attempt. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

The incident occurred on Tuesday and was confirmed by Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), in a statement signed by Mr Taofiq Adebayo, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment.

Reckless Overtaking Turns Deadly

According to Bakare-Oki, preliminary investigations revealed that the Toyota Venza, with registration number GWA 659 RD, was approaching from the Ejigbo axis when its driver attempted a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre on top of the bridge.

The vehicle collided head-on with an oncoming tricycle, popularly called a Marwa (registration number EPE 245 QM), which was travelling from Ikotun.

The violent impact killed the tricycle operator instantly. The two passengers – a male and a female – sustained serious injuries and multiple fractures.

Driver Abandons Victims, Flees Scene

In what Bakare-Oki described as “cowardice and moral dereliction”, the driver abandoned the victims and fled the accident scene immediately after the crash.

“Law enforcement authorities have launched a manhunt to apprehend the fugitive motorist and bring him to justice,” he said.

Emergency Response and Hospitalisation

LASTMA personnel rescued the injured from the wreckage, with assistance from Ikotun Police officers. The victims were rushed to General Hospital, Isolo, for urgent medical treatment.

Bakare-Oki extended condolences to the deceased’s family and wished the injured passengers a speedy recovery.

The Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, has sentenced a Nigerian man, Ademola Ayobami Idris, to three months in prison for cybercrime after he posed as an American recruiter named Mike Samorano to defraud unsuspecting victims online. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

The convict was arraigned on Friday, August 1, 2025, before Justice D.I. Dipeolu by the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a one-count charge of cyber fraud.

According to the charge, Idris, in 2021, fraudulently presented himself via Google Mail as an American recruiter in order to unlawfully gain financial advantage, an offence contrary to Section 22 (2)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015.

Arrest and Confession

EFCC operative Kamal Musa Jubril told the court that Idris was apprehended during a sting operation in the Alagbado area of Lagos State following intelligence reports on internet fraud activities in the area. Upon sighting operatives, Idris attempted to destroy evidence by smashing his iPhone 15 Pro Max, but was taken into custody.

Initially claiming to be a cryptocurrency trader, Idris later confessed to engaging in online employment scams. He admitted sending fraudulent job offers to victims whose contact details he harvested from the Craigslist app, making $400 from the scheme.

Restitution and Sentencing

The EFCC tendered his extrajudicial statements, the recovered iPhone, and forensic analysis reports as evidence, all of which were admitted by the court. Idris restituted ₦300,000 to the Federal Government.

Justice Dipeolu convicted him and imposed a three-month prison term without the option of a fine. The court also ordered the permanent forfeiture of the ₦300,000 restitution and the iPhone 15 Pro Max to the Federal Government.

The Federal Government has announced that all WAEC and NECO examinations will transition fully to Computer-Based Testing (CBT) by 2026.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, disclosed this during a visit to observe a pilot CBT Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) session conducted by NECO at Sascon International School, Abuja, on Tuesday. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

CBT to Tackle Exam Malpractice

Alausa commended NECO for its seamless pilot session, describing it as a major step toward full digitisation.

“WAEC and NECO will soon be like JAMB—conducting exams in certified CBT centres nationwide. This will curb malpractice, improve exam credibility, and build a modern, tech-driven education sector,” Alausa stated.

The government plans to repurpose thousands of JAMB-certified CBT centres for WAEC and NECO candidates, encouraging both public and private investments to expand infrastructure.

By November 2025, all objective papers will be taken via CBT, while essay papers will fully transition by 2026.
NECO Ready Despite Challenges

NECO Registrar, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, assured of the council’s readiness, urging state governments to support infrastructure development, especially in remote areas.

“CBT will reduce malpractice and boost global recognition of Nigerian certificates,” he said.

NECO recorded 1,367,210 SSCE candidates this year—its highest so far—with Kano State topping the list and Kebbi State having the least. The Nigerian International School, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, had the lowest number of entries, with just eight students.
Lawmakers Back CBT Transition

Senator Ekong Samson, Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, and Hon. Oboku Oforji, Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Examination Bodies, pledged legislative support for the reform, praising NECO’s progress.

The Federal Government has announced plans to clear the ₦81 billion owed to N-Power beneficiaries for unpaid allowances dating back to 2022 and 2023. This decision followed a closed-door meeting held on Tuesday, July 22, convened by the Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau.

The meeting brought together representatives of the aggrieved beneficiaries, their legal counsel Abba Hikima, and top government officials, including the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

FG Commits to Clearing Backlog

Speaking after the meeting, Senator Barau described the discussions as “productive,” confirming that the government had begun making arrangements to settle the outstanding payments.

“The beneficiaries came to the Senate for help, and I reached out to the minister, who responded positively. We’ve had a fruitful discussion, and the government has shown clear commitment to clearing the backlog. As a result, the beneficiaries have agreed to suspend their legal action,” Barau stated.

Professor Yilwatda admitted that the government owed the beneficiaries, explaining that the allowances were captured in the 2022 and 2023 budgets but not released due to funding gaps.

“We secured approval from the service-wide vote late last year and are now working to begin disbursement within this fiscal year. We are committed to settling everything before the year ends,” Yilwatda said.

Legal Action Suspended

Confirming the government’s assurances, beneficiaries’ lawyer, Abba Hikima, revealed that the lawsuit filed against the government had been suspended.

“My clients are being owed around ₦81 billion. The minister has assured us that payments will start once the 2025 budget implementation begins. We appreciate the Senate’s intervention,” Hikima noted.

The chairman of the N-Power beneficiaries, Kehinde James, expressed gratitude to the Senate and ministers for addressing the matter after years of frustration.
