Apologies to CharleyGold for stirring up bad memories. Mafioso have a strict policy when it comes to being crossed by other confra members. No slight is seen as minor to them in so far as it is committed by a rival, the comeuppance is death.

In regards to attire, Cosa Nostra copies and bastardizes the dressing apparel of the Sicilian mob as of the 1940's. Fedora on the head, long coats, jeans, tough boots. They don't have a colour code as far as i am aware.

Their near-deification of silence can be traced to their literal name itself. 'Cosa Nostra' is latin and it literally translates to 'our thing'. Everything about the family stays in the family and breaking the law of omerta by tattling to outside brings about an undebatable death penalty upon the Son who commits such an offence. The only people a Son owes an obligation to be both truthful and sincere with are his Dons, his GF, his elders in the game and his blood brothers (those he was initiated with) in the game.

The authorities catch up with you and coerce you to reveal the identities of your fellow Son? Keep silent. Someone attacks/threatens you in a manner that requires retaliation? Keep silent. The cold grip of death dances over you with the revealing of family plans/identities as your only chance at escaping with your life? Keep silent. Such is the way of omerta.

Omerta. The Sicilian principle of silence. Every mafioso follows this code religiously. In essence, one who abides by the code of silence in his affairs is said to follow omerta in that he keeps everything about him private.

Illiteracy dey smell. Historically speaking, all men wore skirts and gowns fashioned from animal skin. Trousers became popular apparel much later on, starting in the arab/asian region before spreading to other areas and even then, it was the ideal choice of dress for WOMEN whom spent a lot of time performing tasks that required them sitting in a manner that was definitely going to expose their laps and more. Revenge... Revenge is another pillar behind the Cosa Nostra ideology and as such, no amount of resources, time or effort is considered too much in achieving it. "It Is Better for an Unblooded Bastard to chance a Mafioso than for a Blooded Bastard to do so" The reasoning behind this OT lies in what i like to call the 'spectrum of offence'. Mafioso, whilst having a general tradition of vengeance, also carry it out in varying degrees of severity based on the percieved slight against them. For the unblooded bastard (jew/48) whom offends a Son, Cosa Nostra will often avenge the offence in a variety of ways including, but not limited to, taxing, beatings, body disfigurement, robbing the offender of his valuable and occasionally murder. It all depends on the offence. However, when a blooded bastard (member of a different cult) offends a mafioso, the penalty is death regardless of the degree of the offence.

Respect is another concept that cosa nostra holds in high esteem. A full fledged maf man, regardless of wealth, status or influence must accord full respect to The Godfather, his Don's (hierachy office holders), his GF and all others who were in the game before him. Outside the fraternity, it is a requisite that Mafioso maintain a high level of civility and a cordial demeanor hence the basis of their OT: "A Peaceful Man in A Deadly Mood". It is also why they refer to themselves as 'mean' as they hide their sheer cruelty behind a mask of soft spoken politeness. For Cosa Nostra, it is an embarrasing thing for a Son to lose his cool and raise his voice, even when offended unjustly. Better he keep mute, smile and walk away, the time spent shouting and threatening would be better used by the mafioso to plot his revenge.

Till date, i am yet to see a mafioso whom isn't a womanizer. A maf man usually has a serious girlfriend and a plethora of girls whom he bangs for fun. The serious girlfriend is off limits to other maf men, high ranking or not as a mafioso is well within his rights to retaliate in any manner he deems fit towards another mafioso whom has an affair with his girl, or sees her having an affair with someone else and not telling him.

La Cosa Nostra revolves around the tenets of money, women and respect. All Sons are encouraged to gather as much wealth as possible so as to be of relevance to the family (just as vikings say deck or eiye say nest etc). Due to this, majority of Sons are involved in one questionable/illegal money making venture or the other, such as fraud, drug peddling, smuggling, selling of human parts on the black market, running prostitution rings, human trafficking, robbery etc. For Cosa Nostra, in so far as you can make money from it then it is fair game. They are a few (emphasis on few) Sons who engage in legitimate business, but even amongst these few a considerable majority engage in one or two criminal acts to supplement their income.

I was broken from my internal musings by the sound of fingers snapping in quick sucession a few inches from my face. I blinke out of reflex, before my eyes settled on Ifeoma's pouting face. 'You think too much' she began exasperatedly, 'I've been trying to get your attention for the past 30 seconds. I even thought that you fell asleep with your eyes open'. 'Good morning to you too' came my dry reply. She huffed in aggravation before wiping a few beads of sweat from her brow as she began to check me out. Looks like we had both thought along the same lines of casual wear. We were both on black pencil jeans, black customized t shirs and airmax sneakers. Heck, the only difference in apparel between us was in accessories, i wore a black Nike face cap and she wore dark sunglasses. Need i say that we both loved black?

Ifeoma on the other hand was an entirely different ball game. She made no efforts to hide her flirting and when my repeated pleas for her to cut it out fell on deaf ears, i had no choice than to give the girl space. Chief, despite all this, was yet to comment on the issue. Heck, i had even caught him with a self satisfied smirk on his face on christmas last year when i had been invited to have lunch with the family and Ifeoma had spent every passing minute trying to get her attention in the most inappropriate of ways. I had to studiously ignore her mother's death glare for the rest of the day.

Tuesday came faster than usual and with an air of uncertainty swirling about me that lasted throughout the day, i finally decided to meet Ifeoma by 6 PM. After much deliberation, i decided to dress casually for our little 'outing'. With a wry smile, i internally mulled over the sheer inappropriatety of the whole situation. The only reason i even agreed to hang out with her today was due to the lowkey vibes i had been getting from Chief over the past few months. I had had a thing for the maid before Christina, her name was Jibola and the moment Chief noticed that i would go googly eyed whenever she was around, he called me up to his study and flatly told me to perish the thought. She was fired a week after that.

So that's that. I wouldn't say that i regret having to go through what i did, but it gave me much needed experience and got rid of my irritating naivety. Maybe, later on, i can narrate a few crusades against cultism in which i was involved in. But for now, thanks for listening (reading?). Intimidation is a powerful tool, it might be easy for you as an external observer to write off a victim as a fool for not reporting. But until you have been in a man's shoes you will never know where it hurts him.

That was the last i heard from cosa nostra, till date i don't know what their fates are. Joe, Ade, Jerry, the whole damn lot had gone dark on my radar and i was free... With my freedom in hand and my already built up revulsion (it has steadily given way to pity over time) for cultists, i wasted no time in purchasing the Man O' War form. To my surprise It cost me 500 naira and i would find out later on that the cheap price of the form was attributed to the fact that they were short on members.

One of the baggers was bleeding steadily from his back, and it had stained the white floor tiles a messy red. The short guy gave me an apologetic smile and told me to stand outside that he would attend to me in a minute. As i stood outside, i heard him bark out orders on how he wanted this room clean for their guest and a few of them burst into mischievous chuckles. A few minutes later, i was sent for and i came in. The short guy engaged me in small talk to make me relax (as he had sensed my nervousness at the earlier show of violence), he spoke in clean english and soon, when i was no longer tense, he asked for my story. I narrated the whole thing to him and he listened patiently, never for once interrupting me until he was done. He asked me a few more questions, my department, level, room number etc and once he was done with that, he unplugged his phone from where it was charging and made a call.

He took me to one of the rooms downstairs. I had never been to this part of the hostel, (i wasn't a wanderer or the adventurous type) and i looked at the symbol painted above the door. "MAN O' WAR NIGERIA" I had heard of these guys in passing, apparently they were one of three student security bodies on campus. I gave Benedict a surprised look, was this guy one of them? We stepped into the room and i was greeted to the sight of over of ten guys drilling two well known baggers with matchetes. The room was one of the biggest ones in the hostel and i counted 22 bunk beds and twice the number of mattresses, it was as if i had stepped into a barrack. Benedict saluted a short guy that was giving the others instructions on how to go about drilling the baggers. The short guy, on seeing me, ordered the others to stop and then instructed them to hang the baggers. After that Benedict explained my plight to him and then he turned to face me.

Benedict, my roommate, had always been someone i had seen as odd. Every monday, wednesday and saturday morning, as early as 4:30 am, he would put on a black cap, white polo, white trousers and sneakers before heading out and coming back by 6:00 am. I figured he was involved in a confra of sorts, but figured that it was none of my business. I came back from lectures one day to see only Benedict in the room. He had a serious look on his face, 'Guy, wetin u do wey maf men come find u this afternoon?'. My heart sank, these guys had found a way to track me to my current room. I wanted to drop the matter, but he wasn't having it and after enough pressure i finally caved and told my story. When i was done, he was already giving me a sympathetic look he seemed to be contemplating something and when he was done mulling over it, he tapped me on the shoulder, a determined look on his face. 'Follow me, e get pesin i for like make u see'

Augustus was my coursemate, he had recently bammed egede and had moved into a compound in which a large percentage of its occupants were egede and the smaller percentage were klansmen. My choice of a hideout was on the basis of the fact that the cosa nostra being cautious frat men wouldn't risk sparking off a clash by coming after me in an egede dominated area where i was treated as a guest. I met augustus on his way out, he looked set to travel but listened to my plight nonetheless. When i was done, he bluntly told me that i would have to follow him where he was going as he wouldn't be around for the next 2 days. I agreed, and that was how i ended up spending 2 days in eket accompanying my friend to a wedding party which i hadn't planned for and in clothes which i borrowed from him to boot.

To call it a fight would be an exaggeration. I'm sure that to anyone who saw us at that moment, it would've looked more like a guy physically assaulting two emaciated guys. Their drug dependency had reduced them and they were practically weightless in my hands as i flung them to the ground and filled their mouths with sand. After a while, spectators came to seperate the fight and in the ensuing commotion, i was gone. Despite my small sense of pride at beating the two of them up, i knew that they would be repercussions. Without bothering to go back to the hostel, I went straight to Augustus' place.

It was my 2nd semester in year 2. I was in a new room (mom was still adamant on me living on campus), and this one had students that were within my age bracket. It was a friday morning and i was on my way to lectures, i was running a bit late so i was practically power walking to class. Some distance away from the lecture auditorium, two boys blocked me and i immediately recognized them. Jeremiah and Ade, we were supposed to have been initiated on that night and whilst i had ran, they had stayed and went through the process. The looks on their faces was anything but friendly, they called me a lily livered betrayer and Ade made to grab my phone. I was gifted the new phone on my birthday with warnings that if i misplaced it then the next phone i would get would be one i got with my own nysc allowance. With this warning in mind, i simply could not let them have my phone. Jerry and Ade had been robust guys when i first met them, but they had become shadows of themselves looking lean and haggard due to drug abuse

Just before the blood could cover me completely, i woke up. I was covered in cold sweat and the other guys in the room gave me funny looks. I blinked away the tears in my eyes and began to head outside. 'Make i piss' i told no one in particular and with that, i was outside. I urinated as i had told them, but once i was done, i looked around to see if anyone was looking. Seeing that i wasn't being watched, i used the track road that Joe had shown me some time ago and burst out on the main road. From that point, few minutes of continuous walking saw me arrive at a colleagues place and i spent the night there, staying awake all night as the concept of sleep eluded me.
