A few hours till initiation, i fell asleep. When next i opened my eyes, i was in a white room, i didn't recognize the room but i took note of the fragrance of the room. It was easily the cleanest room i had ever seen. I was dressed in white apparel as well, pristine white polo, an equally white pair of joggers and white tennis shoes. I took note of the fact that the source of the rooms fresh smell was a white air conditioner on the wall that filled the room with its pleasant fragrance. Suddenly, the fresh smell changed to something rotten, like the stench of rotting corpses. I looked around me to see piles upon piles of corpses around me, all of them in varying states of decay. The air conditioner was gone and it's place, there was a huge metal tap. The tap was turned on, but instead of water, thick jets of blood blasted out of the nozzle and began to fill the room with blood. I wanted to scream but my mouth wouldn't open, wanted to cry but my tears ducts were dry. It felt as if something inside me had died.

The form cost 12k, but Joe took 4k from me instead, he advised me to give wrong data on the parts of the form that required personal info as the form was nothing more than a formality and filling the form with sensitive info would give some hungry Son's leeway to track me and tax the hell out of me. A few days to initiation, i asked Joe if there was anything else i needed to buy before d-day and he gave me a smile and told me that all i needed do was to get a white polo, put on a clean pair of blue jeans and be there. I spent the next couple of days at his place mentally preparing myself for what i was about to be put through. I had heard stories about initiations and i knew that one way or another i would be bleeding on initiation ground.

He said that he couldn't protect me forever and that i would have to learn to fight my own battles, the only way to that, he asserted, was for me to get 'mean'. I accepted, right there and then, i had heard the bitter complaints of intimidation that my coursemates had gone through. Sammy was being terrorized by klansmen, Titus had long evacuated the hostel because of the daily visits that baggers paid him. As i saw it then, it was only a matter of time before i stepped on the wrong toes and be forced to join the list of those intimidated by system men. In essence, if i couldn't beat them, then i had to join them.

I came back later on in the evening to find my room door broken down. There was blood on a few lockers and on my bunk and i was informed that Sweety was getting medical help in the school health centre. I won't say that i was proud of myself at that moment, but i was quite satisfied at the outcome of the whole thing. Once Sweety recovered, he became scarce at the hostel, he'd come around once in a while to get a few things and then he'd be gone for weeks. He kept up this pattern till he stopped coming around altogether. I wouldn't see him again until earlier on this year. Meanwhile, I began hanging around 'Joe' and his cartel men. They would offer me weed and cigarettes which i kept declining until the day they would offer me spirits instead. That, i took wholeheartedly. I took note of the fact that they never used their names whenever i was around, always referring to themselves as 'meanest' 'ci' 'ciao' (they pronounced it 'kawo'), etc It all came to a head the day Joe asked the question i had been expecting

I attended my classes the next day with a plate of sugarless garri as my only sustenance. Once i got to my hostel, i heard someone whistle at me. I turned, it was Joe (the maf one), i walked up to him and we shook hands, he asked for a description and i happily gave him one. He gave me an analyzing look and asked when last i had eaten. I told him, he asked what i ate and i still told him. Shaking his head, he pushed a few two hundred naira notes into my hand (N1400 in all) and told me to make myself scarce and get something to eat. As he began to move into the hostel, 8 other strange faces joined him and that was my first time seeing how organized these people could be when they had someone to hit in mind. These guys had been scattered about, some were watching football in the common room, some buying snacks, some chatting with any girl that gave them the chance. But once the unspoken signal came, they abandoned whatever they were doing and marched, as one, into the hostel.

Sweety came back a few minutes before the hostel would be locked, and despite my already simmering anger i didn't have the balls to confront him directly, so i went about it indirectly, 'Sweety, all this work wey u dey carry my lappy do, dem no dey pay u?' his mood changed instantly, 'Which kain nonsense question be dat?'. My anger increased, 'Which kain talk be dat? See, if dis hustle no dey pay u, kuku leave my lappy for me. How u go dey carry pesin lappy dey comot. Tell am, u no tell. Oya na pay commision, u no pay. Abeg, just leave my laptop for me, i no follow for that parole'. Our quarrel nearly came to blows until Abas woke up and calmed the matter down. My mind was made up, i was done with people walking over me and by the time everyone's attention was off me, i slipped of with an old, almost forgotten piece of paper in one hand and a borrowed phone in another. It was time to make that phone call.

I trudged back to my hostel, phoneless (AGAIN) and cashless. I went to my locker to get my laptop and write my stress away. I was just getting into the art of creative writing back then and it served as an escape for me during stressful moments. My annoyance multiplied as i met my locker already open and my roommates telling me that Sweety had taken my laptop to work that evening. I kept mute and soaked garri for the night, i wasn't yet due to request more cash from my parents until the weekend which was 3 days away.

Before now, i had always had a 1 track mind, but for the first time in my life i was experiencing 2 emotions at once. Fear and anger. Fear at the weapon pressed against my back and anger at the fact that i was about to be robbed... Again. 'Aro, na the bst wey light my sister be dis' at the statement, i felt two hot slaps bring my thoughts back to reality. I kept mute as their hands went into my pocket. 'U and who follow go d movement?!' one of them shouted in my face, his breath stinking of cheap liquor and smoke. I maintained my silence. By now, they were starting to draw attention and with a few hushed words, they boarded a keke and zoomed off, leaving me to stew in my shame and anger.

I narrated the incident to Joe (my roommate) and Abas, they asked for a name which i provided, Joe told me that he would look into it, but he couldn't guarantee anything as Maf men had made taken habit of using false names whenever they had a quarry in sight. Day transitioned into weeks and from weeks into a month and i hadn't got a whiff of joe nor his cronies and the matter was forgotten. I had been saving up cash to get myself a new phone and at the end of that month i had saved enough to buy a 2nd hand infinix phone. It wasn't the best phone out there, but it was something i got by myself and i vowed to myself to be more careful. On buying the phone, i spent sometime at a friends place till around 7pm before i began to make my way back to school. A few feet away from the school gate, i heard a loud 'hey!' i could guess what was about to happen and attempted to walk faster, but a firm hand got hold of my shirt collar and i felt myself freeze as something cold pressed against my lower spine.

'Meanest, na the b wey i been dey tell u about be dis'. His companion (i would later find out that this was the infamous Lala) gave me a look, the kind an elephant would give an ant which challenged it, before turning back to him, 'him don remit marching ground?' Joe nodded before turning back to address me, 'where ur room dey? No lie give me' sheepishly, i mumbled out my room number to him. He patted me on the head, like a good dog, 'Ciao'. And was gone. I stood on that staircase for a little over a minute wondering if i offended any ancestral deity back home to deserve this. I had seen the look in 'joe's' eyes and for him to introduce me to his fellow member so soon, then it could only mean one thing. As i ascended the staircase to head to my room, a singular thought process echoed through my mind over and over again, 'Shey na school i come? Which kain wahala be dis?'

The whole experience looked like something out of a movie to me. I looked at the piece of paper again, he had written down an mtn number and a name. Joe. Soon enough, i cleared the whole scenario out of my mind and carried on with my classes for the day. Come 4pm and i was done with classes for the day and went back to my hostel. I went up the first flight of stairs and turned at the second only to come face to face with the same guy... Again. He was coming down the stairs with another fair dreadlock wearing guy of muscular build, on sighting me, he and his companion rushed down to meet me and on catching up, he introduced me to his companion.

My blood pressure went down significantly on hearing the question. Earlier on, i had heard my senior colleagues yab my coursemates with the same line so i knew what he wanted. Without wasting time, i offered him a crisp looking 1000 naira note, which he pocketed sharply. 'Wia ur phone?' his tone was no longer aggresive, 'dem don collect am' i responded in choppy pidgin english. Seeing my difficulty with pidgin, he switched to plain english and began a game of twenty questions. Department? Did i live alone? Where did i live? He wrote down his number on a piece of paper and handed it over to me. 'Call me if you develop issues with anyone' and with that, he was gone.

'U be fresher?' he asked and i gave a strained 'yes' in reply. In hindsight, this was probably my second mistake, as would come to know that answering such a question was tantamount to handing over the key to your pockets to whoever was askng. He gave me a once over, 'you don pay marching ground?'

I broke into a cold sweat and he walked up to me, bending slightly to reach my ear. 'Na maf dey follow u talk, if u yarn anyhow, i go Bleep u up. Lap outside make we align'. Message delivered, he calmly strolled through the door and was out of sight. My earlier discomfort had turned to dread, with shaky legs and broken speech, i finished my business and silently contemplated the possibility of staying within the confines of the office for an hour or two. I quickly discarded the idea, figuring that i might as well get this over with and stepped to see the hulking frame of the Maf man leaning against the door frame, a cap on his head and a pair of dark shades making his face appear even more terrifying than before

Considering i was still a fresher, i had cash at hand and i was yet to learn the habit of proper spending. I gave Joe and Abas 1000 naira out of pity, and that was the moment i got taken under their wing. Joe saw to it that i knew who was who on campus, not exactly system men but prominent personalities on campus while Abas pointed out who and who to avoid creating issues with. Despite all this, my naivety was still an underlying issue for me, and it cost me a total of four phones and a laptop to push me to the brink. On a Tuesday morning, i went to the school bursary to iron out a issue concerning my school fees reciept. I met a queue on getting there and had to wait my turn. It was almost my turn when this tall bearded guy burst into the office and cuts the line, going straight to the desk and stating his business with an unnatural confidence. I almost thought that he was a staff there, but his razz dressing made me think otherwise. I must've been staring because as he turned to leave, his eyes caught mine.

Everyone in that room was bigger and older than me and i was damn sure that quite a number of them were done with school but hung around due to not having cash and not wanting to stay with their parents. What took the cake, i think, was the day one of my roommates (sweety as he was called, till date i don't know his real name) a dj, took my laptop to work without my consent and when he came back that evening, complimented me on how much of a sound pc i had. I meekly took the laptop back (even tell am thank you on top) and that was when two of the most intimidating guys in the room. Joe and Abas (whom i would later go on to find out was the campus-wide infamous 'Wolverine') called me aside and made a request to me. They told me that they were hungry and would appreciate it if i assisted them with two hundred naira for a plate of food.

I was one of those kids that gained admission immediately after secondary school. I wasn't what you'd call a streetsmart guy and it showed in how i naively took things people told me at face value. Initially, my dad wanted to get me a place off campus but my mum kicked against it vehemently, thinking back now, i am eternally grateful that she did. With my dreams of getting an apartment off k decimated, i had to settle for buying a hostel space in the boys hostel from a contact i had made in the school's computer plaza. I paid 40k for the space (jjc like me), a down bunk and a single locker which i had to share with someone else. My first day setting foot in the room, after payment, treated me to the sight of heavily muscled guys with thick beards which stood in contrast to my youthful appearance. The room was meant to house 10 people but ended up sheltering 22 boys serving the purpose of making me eternally cowed in their presence. Dem no born me well to open mouth when dem dey raid my locker for provisions.

CHAPTER SIX

Finding ifeoma was a skill that I had become a bit adept at. All I needed to do was to follow the scent of burning pawpaw.
I had made it a point of duty not to exchange contact information with her, to avoid being on the recieving end of certain unwanted communication attempts.
I got to her favourite spot, under the unused water tank, and she was in the middle of rolling another blunt when i announced my presence with an exaggerated cough. She gave me a catlike stare, briefly, before going back to rolling her blunt.
Sufficiently satisfied with the structural integrity of her blunt, she lit it, making a show of letting wisps of smoke curl about her lips like a Dragon preparing to let out a conflaguration.

It was unnecessary if you ask me.

She finally looked up again... to acknowledge my presence, and I fought down the sweltering surge of irritation that threatened to wash over me, "You were looking for me?" I kept my voice level and void of expression.

Her eyes flashed, and I briefly mused on how unnervingly similar this girl was to her father.
The disposition toward drug use, the manipulative streak and their ability to express their ever explosive annoyance with nothing but their eyes... Ifeoma was Chief Uzodinma's daughter alright.

Her tone was equally emotionless, "Where have you been?"
I blinked at the unexpected question. Literally speaking, I wasnt obligated to give account of my whereabouts to anyone but Chief, but I figured it would be tad more hazardous if I just answered the question and spared myself the stress of Ifeome taking such a stance as offensive to her and then actively gunning for me as a result.
"The errands I was running for Chief yesterday took up a lot of time, I had to spend the night in my fathers house"
She blinked, a new emotion making its way onto her face, surprise and... relief?
An awkward silence fell upon us, until she cracked her neck (a nervous tick more than anything) and offered me her blunt with a placating smile, "Care for a smoke?"
I gave her an unimpressed look, "No thank you" my voice drier than the Sahara desert.
She pouted, but didn't press the issue. Nothing she did, short of pulling a gun on me, would make me take the treated marijuana from her, talk more of putting it anywhere near my lips.
I shifted, one foot to the other, "Anything else? I need to freshen up and get ready..."
She made a face at me, "You work too much oga! Don't kill yourself with work before you turn old". I gave her a half smile, "I'll try to keep that in mind"
I made to leave, but a firm grip on my wrist stopped me in m tracks. I felt her full, soft lips press against my knuckles in a light kiss ending her little display by nipping on my middle knuckle playfully.
Her voice dropped into a mesmerizing whisper, brushing past my ears with all the grace of a nice, fluttering wind, "Don't forget about tomorrow".
Out of words and witty comebacks, I nodded (stiffly) and began to make my way to my living quarters to freshen.

The all too familiar tightness in my trousers made me realize that I would be taking a cold bath.

Before I got about answering the heavily loaded question thrown my way, I made a show of slowly and methodically making my way to the table, then dropping two pouches of Ziploc encased white powder before him.
His eyes brightened on sighting the product but he made no move to avert his piercing gaze from me neither to retrieve the powder on the desk.
With a defeated shrug and the awareness that I wouldn’t be able to wiggle my way out of this one by distracting Chief, I began to narrate my activities the day before.
I droned for a steady twenty-five minutes, mentally selecting my words and physically stating them in such a manner that they accurately portrayed everything in that it would be nigh impossible for him to confuse my words.
I eventually tapered off into silence, my report given and awaiting any further remarks from him.
He maintained the silence for a bit (wordlessly and subtly placing the two pouches of cocaine in one of his drawers), before breaking the silence with a slight clearing of his throat.
“And the money?”
“I dispersed them into five different front accounts before arriving here sir”
He nodded, his earlier stormy expression gone, and pulled out a bottle of London dry gin (I idly noted that this one was full… looks like he was done draining the previous one” and lightly dusted off the slight percolation of dust that had gathered over the amber liquor bottle in a thin film.
He gave me an asking look, “Care to share a drink with me?”
I mulled over the thought carefully, I figured that some liquor would do me some good and considering the intensity of my tasks yesterday, I doubted chief would give me anything strenuous to handle today… but I was no stranger to the fact that emergencies can and usually will pop up at the most inopportune of times.
And by ‘inopportune of times’ I mean me being drunkenly passed out from having one too many shots of spirit.
My decision was made in seconds, I took the offered glass from Chief’s already stretched out hand and poured myself a half full glass of glistening colourless liquor and gulped the whole thing down by the mouthful in successive bursts of gulping.
Chief’s eyebrows rose, almost reaching his practically nonexistent hair line, as I reached for a few mentholated candies and chewing gums on the confectionary filled tray smack dab in the centre of his table.
“Why the rush?”
“I need to freshen up and get ready for the day sir”
He gave me a look, yet another familiar look beginning to bubble and writhe in his dark eyes before he nodded (almost reluctantly), “We’ll talk more later then”
I bowed my head slightly, a wordless gesture of respect, and made for the door,
As I felt my digits curl around the cold metallic handle of the double doors, Chief’s voice made me pause and promptly turn around to give him my full attention.
“… I said, my daughter was looking for you last night she seemed upset…” he left his voice hanging, an unspoken question lilting about in his tone.
I kept my face void of expression, “I’ll see her right away sir”
He nodded and opened his drawer, no doubt to get on with arranging his lines of white, and I took that as my cue to leave.
As I shut the door behind me, I cringed internally, dealing with Ifeoma sometimes could be a chore and other times could be an outright milestone to cross.
Lord knows what her issues was at the moment, but I might as well get on with finding her and hearing from her.
Looks like today was kicking off to be a stimulating one for me

First, give him space. Na see finish dey bring disrespect come. Second, double your hustle. If you no get, then find one. It will definitely help with the first. Third, are you a nigerian at all? Small boy talk give you and e dey pain you. How can you live in this country and not have bad mouth? Make yourself unpredictable, distancing yourself and ignoring him will help with this, he thrives on the attention you give him from his verbal barbs, denying him such attention will throw his juvenile brain in for a loop. Fourth, use subtle warnings/threats. Shey he's into yahoo? You already have an edge here, a subtle reminder that the nigerian police is always willing to table the matter of his likes. Of course you could use a different threat if you want.
