theamerican: So, I experienced first hand fire service response this past weekend. After driving until very late in the night, so I crashed at a friend's apartment who was gone for the night at her bf's.
At about 9am, a deafening sound woke me up. It was the fire/smoke alarms. Her neighbor downstairs had a grease fire due to carelessness. Lol, I sped downstairs through the smoke in the stairway without shoes on haha.
When I got outside, she was trying to get her phone to work. She finally called 911 to tell them about the fire. The fire response team got to us in less than 3 minutes. Took them about 15 minutes to put the fire out and blow out all the smoke.
I was all in my feelings about how efficient the emergency service was and was already criticizing Naija in my head. I talked to my brother in Lagos about it afterward, then he told me about Lasema and how efficient they are too. He told me they would have also reached the scene in 3 minutes and put out the fire. I'm proud of Lasema if it's true they're efficient (If not, I hope they get better), fire is nothing to play with.
So, added to the list of reasons for enjoying my life here: smoke/fire detectors/alarms. It could have been a bigger fire and nobody would be there to wake me up lol. Thank God for them!!! There was this video trending on Twitter of Croatia firefighters who left their world cup penalty shootout match against Russia in an instant to go attend to an Emergency.... and i was so sad to see the way Nigerians were finding faults in that video, some saying it was doctored or the quality of the camera was too clear to be true or cameras dont pan around, etc.. i was so sad that some Nigerians lacked exposure to what they saw before them,.. In any supposed reputable health related facility. they are always taught and it should always be taught that there's 1 second between Life and Death and that is what this croayians understand. So it was really really sad the way some Nigerians attacked the credibility and swift response of their action |

travelland: I read your thread on life of a student abroad with amusement. It's clear that you are from a rich background here in Nigeria. Apart from school grants I'm sure you still had to cough out about $20,000K for tuition/living cost and other expenses, you are so privileged that you prefer to volunteer during your break than to hustle for needed funds because money is not your problem. Now, many American citizens in your shoes will have to work their back sides off to pay up student loans, even those on scholarship will still have to hustle to pay living cost.
In America you have to live through the fear of being bombed by nuclear weapons from countries like N.K, any lunatic can misuse guns to kill people, natural disasters like hurricane, tornadoes, wild fire rampage the area, you also have to cope with discrimination because of the color of your skin, even your foods have been altered to poison your blood streams (GE) , drugs, serial killers, robbers, terrorists are there too
Enjoy your abroad In my opinion it's good to visit, if you want to live there feel very free . l encourage people to visit often but don't sell your birthright What have come to understand is no country is perfect... Everyone has what works for them, i know someone in Canada who wants to go back to naija, i know people who have lived here and are back in Nigeria and are happy to be in Nigeria And there are alot others who are comfortable in staying in foreign lands despite the negativity there.... Its all about Survival anywhere you find yourself. No country is perfect |

MackyNaija: That was part of what another poster wrote that started the current discussion I replied above...
It is full of assumptions. I only wish people that school here with me could comment.. How many Nigerians leave for the US masters with confirmed $10k - $15k??
Hope keeps us alive here, there are numerous legitimate ways to push through the financial aspecs and complete the program.
Chief of which is getting an RA in a big school, your entire tuition could be fully funded.
Finally, check for the list of funded schools on 'prodigy finance' and try to attend one as this can be used as a backup plan if need be.
Forget the naysayers and make the move. Lool, free that guy... they say ''who nor go nor know".... The bolded has said basically alot.... I was already writing an epistle but i cleared it all I know peeps that just came here with one shirt and trouser in their hand luggage and legitimately they are now doing fine (lol, i nor advice you to try am oo) |

RIchieSuazo: Pls have got some questions..
1. If i was given a 2 year visa for a 3 years graduate course.. would i have to come back to Nigeria to renew my visa towards the end of my 2nd year??
2. Can i travel to the U.S. with a Pack of ORIJIN and/or Egusi without having any POE issues.. would i have to declare anything?
Happy Sunday 1. You don't have to come back to Nigeria to renew your visa.. Heard you can do that at Canada.. I really don't know the process.. Someone with experience can answer you 2. I really dont know abt this but it should be possible |

EZEIGBO1OFIMO: Absolute foolishness, how else are people supposed to look for schools, by consulting orisa and IFA abi ..... there's nothing wrong with finding a school online, as that is what the internet was made for, getting information, otherwise previously unreachable due to location barriers, at the tip of your fingertips, hearing about the school from even buhari or Trump himself makes you no different from me who tailored my search on any of these college search engines, heck schools even have online tours for international applicants self, and ever ready support for those of us who "found them online" Honestly, at bolded, how stupid do you think we are on this forum, VO's type all the time as they're constantly taking notes (which I feel is usually unnecessary). So the VO's have become the NSA , that have info about every damn human being you name, do you even realize that at least 4 people would bear your exact name, and except VO's can read minds how would thy know who you're talking about. . Again , I call BS on this hearing about school from awon bill gates. Still no difference from doing online research, if Trump tells me about liberty university today, and I do no further research while femi who has done his thorough online research also appears for a visa interview, you think I would get the visa because Trump told me about he school?.. if your answer to the above question is yes, then your wisdom and intelligence has the mathematical complex number j attached to it ( its imaginary) Ermm... i had a feeling i would have to explain this sooner or later cuz i just wrote it real quick just because all this have been mentioned here before... Am sorry you werent able to get the message i was trying to pass across 1. what i meant about the internet ish is that,.. the internet shouldnt be your ONLY source or MAIN source.. and as for the 2nd one, glad you mentioned the BOLDED... so the notes is for shako ba... i think you should go do your research on that.... ''as long as you went through their system, it doesnt take them up to 3 minutes to fetch you out"... but all that doesnt matter.... Just have all your answers covered during an interview |

AlterEnigma: Before i start.. Note of Advice , which has been said here many times Make sure you have genuine answers to most of the questions asked
While on the queue you'll obviously over hear one or two things
1. VO Asked a fellow why he's going for pharmacy.. He said he wants to help people(right there, I knew he didn't soji) VO asked why do you want help people... He said he cares for people... I just stopped listening at that point cuz I wasn't down for any negative energy
2. Pls and pls , As stated so many times here... When asked how you got to know about the school.. they dont want to hear msinus or internet ish.. Make sure you have a legit fellow who you heard about the school from..
VO asked this fellow how he got to know about the school and he called the name of a person.. the VO then told the guy to spell the name while he checked his database.. They have all this info on their server.. so be careful if you plan on using someone whose been through their system
3. Have read cases where people got away cuz they pretended not to be able to speak English.. you'll be surprised the VO attending to you knows how to speak Yoruba, igbo etc.. witnessed it today
So here my goes my TRANSCRIPT
VO: tell me about your program
Me: My program is in Masters in Chemical Engineering at Tamuk. It requires 24 credit hours .. 18hours in a major and 6hrs in a minor
VO: tell me about your academic background
Me: I did chemical engineering in my undergraduate (Vo cuts in: ooh chemical engineering , i said YES) and I graduated last year July.
VO: Why didn't you do NYSC
Me: I want to focus more on my education at this point and be done with it (he smiled at this point).
VO: so what will this degree do for you.. All this while he wasn't looking at me.. but after asking this question.. He stopped and looked at me
Me: I'll be bringing my U.S degree back to Nigeria to apply for jobs(started nodding his head) at P&G, GSK ( He was just looking me in the eye and leaning closer to hear more) chevron, shell to name a few because a U.S. degree has an excellent international reputation (kept on nodding And typing) which will make me a valuable asset and give me an edge over my colleagues (just kept on nodding and nodding) when I get back to Nigeria
Vo: how many schools did you apply two
Me: 2
Vo: what was the other one
Me: Lamar uni
VO: why Tamuk
Me: I almost choked here... I chose Tamuk basically for two major reasons. 1. they offer a concentration in renewable energy which is in line with my career goal of being a specialist in energy 2. They now have a natural gas dept which is combined with the chemical engineering dept and spearheaded by the same director. Dr. ******** whom I called and confirmed from
VO: whose sponsoring you
Me: my dad
Vo: what does he do
Me: he does this and that
Vo: let me see his statement..
Me: handed it over to him..
then he said they are not showing his name but business name... showed him a reference letter that showed his name as the owner of the account. Told him he's a sole proprietor of his business..
VO asked if he didn't have staffs he pays to cuz the money could be expenditures Said No, just his PA and driver.. He handles everything himself..
Then he gave me back the statement to show him popc name cuz I said I can show him his name.. So I showed him his withdrawals on the accounts and he says he can see all that.. he just wants too see his own name on the title of the account..
Then he said I should either change the name on the account or transfer all the money to a new account with his name on it and follow some instructions on one white paper like that and send additional documents supporting the account through DHL to them and Gave me a case number
Then he returned my passport..
Personally the guy okay.. Na people way just dey go WINDOW 2 I pity..
The lady has no chills
MODIFIED: he asked if I took any standardised test. Told him both GRE AND TOEFL UPDATE: Submitted my passport back at the drop off with a fixed deposit slip in my dad's name this time and it was finally issued today Thanks lagosismyhome walspring walepepe21 and everyone here who supports and assists us God Bless |
