Ahmed0336:Am just wondering why should Ojukwu belittle himself to visit Buhari in a little known town of Duara to discuss Nigerian unity. Buhari lied against Ojukwu, the truth has been vindicated, Ojukwu and Buhari are not on the same academic pedestal. Ojukwu was an Oxford trained graduate, Buhari is not. Ojukwu was a graduate soldier, Buhari was not. Ojukwu like Azikiwe, Nelson Mandela, mahatma Ghandi etc was a charismatic leader, Buhari is not. Ojukwu growing up enjoyed life as a silver spoon kid, Buhari did not. During the war, while Ojukwu was a general, Buhari was a lieutenant. If Buhari claimed that he had an agreement with Ojukwu that Nigeria will one, why was there no press release after the so called meeting? Did Ojukwu secretly travel to Duara without informing members of his family? How can the two of them discuss issues bothering on Nigeria’s unity without involving other ethnic groups that made up Nigeria? At the time he (Buhari) claimed to have had the meeting with Ojukwu both of them were not leaders of any of the two ethnic groups of igbo and hausa. Simply put,Ojukwu was one of the opinion leaders of the East and Buhari represents same in the North. Non of them can take decision for their regions without involvement or support of other leaders or the masses. So Buhari goofed to have claimed that he had agreement with Ojukwu that Nigeria will remain one, with obvious reference to the fact that Igbos will remain part of Nigeria. This is a clear case of me an igbo man inviting Alhaji Umaru my hausa friend or leader as the case may be to my home town and after a lengthy discussion on Nigeria’s way forward, we agreed that federalism is the best system for Nigeria. Some years later i became the president of Nigeria, as a result of my bad policies that put the north in a disadvantaged position they started to protest against it and calling for division of the country and i quickly reminded them of the private meeting i had with the late umaru, one of their own, which they are not aware of, that they must remain part of Nigeria. |
Odumegwu Ojukwu’s first son, Emeka Ojukwu Jnr said president Muhammadu Buhari lied against his late father when he said Ojukwu visited him in Daura, and they both agreed that Nigeria must be united. Ojukwu Jnr said it is a lie from the pit of hell because Ojukwu never made mention of such visit or agreement to any member of the family, he warned Buhari to leave the name of his father out of whatever he is doing. This was contained in an email sent to Blue News by Emeka Ojukwu Jnr, Tuesday morning as a reply to our inquiry on the issue. http://bluenews.com.ng/you-lied-my-father-never-visited-you-stop-disrespecting-him-ojukwu-jnr-blast-buhari

The Supreme leader of the indigenous people of #Biafra Mazi Nnamdi Kanu visited the family of Dee Sam Mbakwe the former civilian Governor of old Imo state and was greeted with this amazing gift. This wine is nearly 40 years old and was bought by Dee Sam Mbakwe. His instruction was that, the wine shouldn't be given to anyone else, except who believes and stands for the well being of his people just like he did. Today, his entire household found that quality in Mazi Nnandi Kanu by simply handing over this precious and aged wine

Please over look the police report, Ejike Ofoegbu said Loveth Gift narrated "We all were in the church during the 6am morning mass today, we saw two cars that drove into the church; because it was a Church premises we over looked it and we considered them to be people that came for morning mass(service). But to the surprise of everyone, the car halted at the center of the gate, meaning you cannot close the gate, since it is open already. "The driver came out of the car pretending he was fixing a problem; so everyone still ignored the drama happening outside the premises. "Suddenly, some men came out from the car, fully armed, all in Army uniform. I was lucky because I was sitting at the back, just beside the door, but I was clearly seeing what was happening. The sky was cloudy and everywhere seemed dark; no one saw what they were carrying, whether it was gun, but surely they were fully equipped. "They immediately rushed to the front door. I was too lucky to jump the fence, but before I had jumped, I heard gun shot everywhere in the building. They obstructed the front gate, because for women that is their only route to escape. That was why women were killed more than men. Children were killed as well, many were seriously injured. "After I had escaped, I started making calls to link my church members who were in the church, but they were not picking up; not knowing they were dead already. The gun men were not igbos, because their language were not igbo, the government should stop lying, I heard they said That, they gun Men were flashing touch light on us, but it a lie, because the whole church was so lighted that even from outside you will see who is inside. Even at that, if they were really flashing touch light to know who is their target, those that were killed, are they their target. Like I said before and I will say it again, I was at the back door, I saw all that happened, they were with Army uniform, face covered, standing at the Front door, holding their trigger, and shooting at anything that moves. When the police came, I was waiting for them to ask questions of what happened, so that I will explain, but they were busy taking pictures of the dead ones, without knowing the fact "Not too long after they had gone, I went back to the church. I was shocked with what I saw; my Mother was lying dead! Many people were unconscious but later succumbed to death. "After about one hour of the killings, the Police arrived the church. Two hours later, the Governor, Willie Obiano arrived too. Everyone was shocked, wandering how the perpetrators stormed in Army uniform. Questions began to arise: "Who gave them the Army uniform?" Who gave them the Army car?" Surely jihad is here, and everyone have to defend him/her self. A woman who still survived the mayhem said, "All I could remember is that I was sitting at the front when some people in Army uniform invaded the Church and started shooting at everyone. They just held the trigger and fired at everyone they sighted. I managed to hide under the seat but was shot in the leg. "A boy was shot in head, his brain bursted, and blood spilled everywhere - even at my face." Ejike Ofoegbu Reporting http://www.jtownconnect.com.ng/2017/08/police-report-was-fake-what-really.html

Relevant stakeholders in the struggle for the actualization of the independent state of Biafra, including Nnamdi Kanu-led Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the Supreme Council of Elders of the Indigenous People of Biafra (SCEIPOB), a former President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Dr Dozie Ikedife as well as Biafra Customary Government have resolved to unite their efforts to realise their common goal. The resolution came on the heels of Nnamdi Kanu’s visit to Dr Ikedife in Nnewi, Anambra State, at the weekend supposedly to settle lingering misunderstanding between the two groups. Although the duo did not address the press after their private meeting, there are strong indications that they might have reached a consensus on the need for them to work together to achieve the dream of independent state of Biafra. A source who confided in Sunday Sun quoted Kanu to have told Ikedife: “You are like my father. We must work together because I understand the importance of dialogue. What happened was a misunderstanding, a monumental misunderstanding and misinformation that led to the issues we had in the past which are now resolved.” “What we want is Biafra and my relationship with you started many years ago. Before the formation of the Radio Biafra, before the formation of the IPOB, I was coming here to seek your counsel. You remain my father today, tomorrow and forever.” Kedife, in his response, the source said, expressed joy that the face-off had become a thing of the past. “Someone who kills his brother is not a hero. Now, there will be no discouragement, no distraction and no provocation to achieve Biafra. We will go to Biafra land. Today is a significant day because some people allude that the Igbo can never speak with one voice. We shall prove them wrong. It has to be one voice, one mind. If we can speak with one voice and one mind, there is nothing we cannot achieve. I’m not a prophet but many people have told me that they see Biafra coming. May it come to pass. You are welcome, my son. The IPOB is one,” he enthused. However, Ikedife was said to have advised that the modus operandi of the IPOB must be within the confines of the law as well as obedience to the law of the land. “We have been killed enough. We don’t want to give the opportunity for any more blood of the Biafra agitators to be spilled. We will resist that and do anything to avoid it,” he maintained. http://sunnewsonline.com/nnamdi-kanu-makes-peace-with-ikedife/ |
As a prelude to this downbeat essay, I wish to state that I am an unrepentant advocate of election boycott as a passive protest against, a tacit rejection of, a vicious State like Nigeria. It is my stance that wherever and whenever a State resorts to intimidation, use of military force, and outright extermination of non-violent agitators, a sublime means of agitating for the extrication of the victims from the thralldom suppression and oppression, two strangleholds of the State, should be adopted. The May 30 sit-at-home exercise was a litmus test for something much more effective. No illogicality is committed if I say the May 30 sit-at-home is the forerunner of the proposed Anambra State Guber Election boycott. However, seeing that this project has generated a cacophony of discordant reactions from the Biafra rank and file, I am impelled to do this postmortem. I crave your rapt attention as I take off. STRENGTH OF THE IMMINENT BOYCOTT The ripples that has greeted this proposal is understandable, considering the fact that the election is few months away - November, 2017. To many a thinker it is urgent and dicey, hence the need for caution. Interestingly, the bulk of these perturbed lot comprises the unlettered vis-a-vis the trajectory of revolutions that are forced by the operators of a violent regime to toe the path of civil disobedience. Of course, when occupying the streets becomes dangerous to the lives of civilised protesters in a clime that unjustly proscribes civil protests, voluntary withholding of mandate becomes an effective option. I will go ahead and do a three-pronged excursus on the strength of the proposed boycott viz. political, constitutional, and legal. Politically speaking, the proposed boycott will divulge the person to whom the fealty of Anambraians belong. This, I make bold to say, is the fear of both Abuja and Anambra seasoned politicians. A successful boycott has the potentiality of retiring totus simul (once and for all) all the ineffective self-styled and self-acclaimed political bigwigs that dot the political atmosphere in the most vibrant eastern state in Nigeria. The bewilderment that came as aftermath of a very successful sit-at-home exercise, one that has cloaked Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in glory, is yet to go. The political gladiators, at home and in Abuja, are still nonplussed about the ne'er total response to the call. The response to Kanu's call has simmered down as disrespect for political offices in Nigeria. The deprave politicians in Anambra and Nigeria doubt whether they can take another one that is billed to be more devastating. The boycott will make a huge mess of the national and state political configuration as follows: * the tenure of the incumbent governor gets extended indefinitely, making his government illegitimate; * the winner will emerge only if the 2/3rd compliance of eligible voters in the register is met; * even where a winner unjustly emerges from the poor turnout, the government becomes a de facto, illegitimate government; and * the oppressive Federal Government of Nigeria will be forced to militarize the state before the full glare of international communities, an act that will end up making Nigeria a political bete noire in the comity of nations. A successful election boycott poses austere danger to politics in Nigeria, will boost the confidence of secessionists and facilitate referendum for Biafra Republic. Constitutionally speaking, a successful election boycott will expose the chink in the armour of the gloried Armed Forces Ruling Council (AFRC) document we wrongly refer to as Constitution. Yes, this proposed boycott will give us more reasons to commit the military document to the bin, for if it had originated from the people, it would have envisaged what is in the offing. It is also my submission that the so-called Constitution, having failed to capture the possibility of a situation like this with its attendant solution, falls short of the minimum standard requisite for acceptance as grand norm. A successful Anambra Election boycott will exhume the hollowness of our constitution and reinforce the call for peaceful secession vide internationally-observed referendum. Furthermore, it is a truism that a self-caused disenfranchisement is not unconstitutional. Those who have said it is unconstitutional for Director Nnamdi Kanu to give such directive are the ones unconstitutionally constitutionalizing this passive form of secessionist activity. Would those throwing invectives rather that more Biafran agitators lose their precious lives doing it the conventional way? Or is it constitutionally permissible to shoot at unarmed agitators? The legal outlook on the call for election boycott does not reveal anything unlawful. No law is breached by the directive, for just as it is the unassailable right of an eligible voter to cast his vote during an election it is even much more so for him to, on the basis perceived aggression, withhold it. Disenfranchisement becomes legally actionable only when its cause is external to the eligible voter. To buttress my stance, it is wrong to force someone to give his fillip to an electioneering process. Credibility of the candidates and tranparency of the electioneering process are the real determining factors behind overwhelming support. Participation in election is by conviction and perceived ECONOMIC and POLITICAL INTEGRATION, not INTIMIDATION or FIAT. Director Nnamdi Kanu's call for election boycott does not run afoul to any rule or breach any extant law in Nigeria. His can be likened to that of the politicians who make use of specious promises at campaigns. I think the razzmatazz and brouhaha about this legal call are most unwarranted. If the politicians are free to schmooze about why they should be voted for, Director Nnamdi Kanu, as the leader or his people, is imbued with the right to direct his people aright. What is sauce to the goose is sauce to the gander. I guffawed when someone said she would drag Director Nnamdi Kanu to the UN over his directive. That will be an exercise in futility. THE WEAKNESS AND CONCERNS OF ANAMBRA ELECTION BOYCOTT There are those who think the proposed boycott has some booby-traps to be looked into and possibly circumvented. My inbox is bursting at the seems with such concerns. Some concerned persons mistake FEAR for CONCERN. I am not jiggered because Nigerians are yet to come out from the doldrums. Ours is a protracted submissiveness to military junta that was interrupted by providence. No one can doubt that we would still be full of panegyrics in the midst of glaring oppression, impoverishment, and political and economic disintegration had late Gen. Sani Abacha not died. Recall that all those that posthumously condemned him were the same people that lauded him. I am not surprised that most of the ones concerned about the impending Anambra Guber Election boycott were the ones excoriating all previous governments in the state. Let us see the purview of their fears. 1) That the boycott will discredit Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and adversely affect the struggle for secession. The concern above is a manifestation of ignorance. The boycott is itself a passive orchestration of rejection of Nigeria's political structure. It is a very risk-free way of protesting against Nigeria and all she stands for. The success of this directive, which will move the international communities to mount pressure on Nigeria for referendum, should be the concern of every victim of political and economic inequality. 2) That the boycott will give the ruling party, APC, the opportunity to take over Anambra State Government House. This assertion above is wide shot from the tenets of revolution. No true revolutionist movement is affected by politics. The boycott is a lucid rejection of the political structure. In the eyes of Director Nnamdi Kanu and his ardent IPOB followers, all the political parties in Anambra State and in Nigeria, by extension, are unacceptable, since their existential template, Nigeria, stands rejected. 3) That the boycott will cause serious political crisis in the state and, possibly, a declaration of state of emergency, which will militarise the state. The boycott is a non-confrontational way to cause turmoil in the political structure of both Anambra State and Nigeria. A declaration of state of emergency by the Nigerian State out of exasperation will be the coup de grace needed to prove that Niger has been rejected and continues to exist against the wish of the people. Those that fear that a state of emergency will breed brutality, mass arrest, and drive the final death knell on the Biafra project have failed to see that no one is taking to the streets. How the trigger-happy uniformed men will be able to pull the trigger on empty streets and roads is beyond my ken. Those engulfed by palpable fear of the unknown should not forget that this passive modus operandi is borne out of Kanu's concern for the safety of his people. As a humanist, even walled by the dinghy prison where he was unjustly locked up, he was disconcerted by the number of people whose lives had been cut short by the uncouth demeanour of Nigerian armed forces. 4) That Director Nnamdi Kanu should plant a governor of his choosing, using the overwhelming support from the IPOB. My reaction to those making this stupid call is vehement. In my candid and dispassionate opinion, those behind this call are mercenaries on a mission to bring the towering global popularity of Director Nnamdi Kanu to a ridiculous state. You cannot reprobate and approbate regarding the same object of concern. The IPOB is against the continued existence of its people in Lugard's precious gift to the North called Nigeria. Any participation in Nigeria's election renders its chance for referendum a wishful thinking. The IPOB must be resolute in their bid to show that Nigeria and whatever she represents are outside the set of acceptable things. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu's forthrightness deserves the accolade of every true son and daughter from the political, divisive entities referred to as South-East and South-South all whom have been the victims of the predator called the North. CONCLUSION The IPOD under the aegis of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has proven to be the most formidable mouthpiece and pathway to freedom from our collective oppressors. Revolutions the world over have always been about one leader. Poland, South Africa, Indonesia etc typify nations which freedom were conceived by specific revolutionary minds. Ours is a shared consciousness that has come from Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the Voice that became body, soul, and spirit for the onward unjust imprisonment for two years. He has shown what it takes to be a leader. He submitted his royalty, freedom, and all the niceties of life to our collective oppressors for our sake. It is our turn as the collectively victimised to return the favour for the sake of our children and their own children. We collectively see him as our sole leader and shall queue behind him. Henceforth, whoever says anything contrary to what this gift the Almighty God has bequeathed to us should be treated as a foe. We must work together as a team led by one captain. They say our Igbo brothers and sisters have buyable conscience. I urge you all to prove them wrong. Let us use the Anambra Election Boycott to rebrand the Igboness of the Igbo man. Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu reportedly invited about five thousand members of his group to his Afaraukwu residence but surprisingly, more than thirty thousand people turned up. Kanu addressed the multitude of IPOB members in Umuahia, the Abia State capital in the presence of foreign journalists from reputable international media houses. He responded to Acting President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo claim that the agitation for Biafra is unlawful in Nigeria. Kanu who’s facial expression obviously showed how outraged he was, said nobody can stop the coming of Biafra and he also unapologetically added that anybody who doesn’t want the coming of Biafra will die.He further urged the Nigerian government to build more prisons where Biafran people will be detained because according to him, they’re not going back until they get Biafra. ORIENTAL TIMES gathered that the invitation was a calculated plan by Kanu to show the international community how ready the people of Biafra are for referendum. The over 30,000 persons who gathered at the palace of HRH (Eze) Israel Okwu Kanu, father of the Radio Biafra Director, chanted several songs calling Kanu their saviour and at same time calling for a country of their own, Biafra.

JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED |
Big trap for US -Nigeria Relationship....... ![]() The United States District Court for the District of Columbia has entered an order authorising 10 Biafran Plaintiffs to sue 14 Nigerian Defendants for alleged complicity in the 2016 torture and extrajudicial killings under colour of Nigerian law to retaliate for peaceful Biafran protests against ethnic or religious oppression. Though the order was given on June 2, 2017, News Express learnt of it on Saturday night when it received a copy of a statement issued in Washington, D.C, by the litigants. The statement, dated June 8, 2017, said that the next step in the litigation is to serve the Torture Victims Protection Act and Alien Tort Claims Act Complaint on the Nigerian Defendants. The Biafran Plaintiffs are seeking millions of dollars of damages to compensate for their grievous losses and suffering. The case name is John Doe, et al v. Tukur Yusuf Buratai et al, United States District Court for the District of Columbia Civil Action No. 1:17-cv-01033. It has been assigned to United States District Judge Ellen S. Huvelle, appointed by President William Jefferson Clinton. The District Court’s Order noted: “Each Nigerian Defendant allegedly committed crimes against humanity and, as regards each of the Decedents, extrajudicial killings actionable under the Alien Torts Act and Torture Victims Protection Act. The Complaint alleges that Defendants’ sole or substantial motivating force behind the extrajudicial murders and torture…was the ethnicity, religious and political beliefs of the victims which match those of each Plaintiff, i.e., Igbo ethnicity, Christian faith, and support of Biafran independence through peaceful means.” The District Court added that the “Plaintiffs’ allege that identifying Plaintiffs or Decedents would expose them, their families, and relatives to an intolerable risk of death or serious bodily injury at the hands of Defendants or the Government of Nigeria.” Attorney Bruce Fein, of Fein & DelValle PLLC, who represents the Plaintiffs with his partner W. Bruce DelValle, explained: “This landmark lawsuit is about justice and the rule of law coming to rescue Igbos, Biafrans and their political supporters who are persecuted because of their Christian religion, their ethnicity and their political viewpoints since Nigeria’s independence fromits colonial master Great Britain in October 1960. Nigeria’s decolonization violated the1960 United Nations General Assembly Declaration on the granting of independence to colonial countries and peoples. Paragraph 2 declares, ’All peoples have the right to self-determination; by virtue of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social, and cultural development.’ Great Britain never allowed Biafrans to ‘freely determine their political status‘through a plebiscite or otherwise. That stands in stark contrast to the self-determination vote Great Britain afforded the Scots in 2014. Biafrans are decidedly more distinct from other Nigerians in matters of democratic culture, history, religion, language and ethnicity than the Scots are from the English. The time to remedy the flagrant decolonisation injustice to Biafrans through peaceful means is long overdue.” |
A United States (U.S.) District Court for the District of Columbia has granted leave to 10 Biafran plaintiffs to sue Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai, and 13 others for complicity in the 2016 torture and extra-judicial killings under colour of Nigeria law to retaliate for peaceful Biafran protests against ethnic or religious oppression. Brought under the Torture Victims Protection Act and Alien Tort Claims Act Complaint, the plaintiffs are seeking millions of dollars as damages to compensate for their grievous losses and suffering. The suit, John Doe, et al vs. Tukur Yusuf Buratai et al, with Civil Action No. 1:17-cv-01033, has been assigned to United States District Judge Ellen S. Huvelle, who was appointed by President William Jefferson Clinton. The court further ruled that the “plaintiffs alleged that identifying plaintiffs or decedents would expose them, their families and relatives to an intolerable risk of death or serious bodily injury at the hands of defendants or the Government of Nigeria.” Counsel to the plaintiffs, Attorney Bruce Fein of Fein & DelValle PLLC, and W. Bruce DelValle, said, among others: “This landmark lawsuit is about justice and the rule of law coming to rescue Igbo, Biafrans and their political supporters who are persecuted, because of their Christian religion, ethnicity and political viewpoints since Nigeria’s independence from its colonial master Great Britain in October 1960.” http://guardian.ng/news/buratai-13-others-taken-to-u-s-district-court-over-biafra-protests/

Leader of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, Comrade Uchenna Madu has disclosed that all the groups agitating for the peaceful restoration of Biafra would work together to actualize the goal through a United Nations-supervised referendum. Madu who made this disclosure against the background of the successful sit-at-home protest initiated by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He commended the collaboration between IPOB and MASSOB in the execution of the exercise and noted that with such spirit the Biafra dream would be actualized sooner than expected. He explained that MASSOB would work towards the referendum as the next line of action, noting that the proposed exercise would give the people the opportunity to express their willingness to leave Nigeria and decide their future. His words: “MASSOB will continue to press for Biafra actualization and restoration as that is our only agenda and mission. Now that the sit-at-home exercise has come and gone, the impact and fears it created will continue to flourish. It has become a major part of Biafran history. Though it was not the first sit-at-home exercise ever held by the group, but it turned out as the greatest. “The sit-at-home exercise was declared and observed as a litmus test of the popularity and public acceptance of IPOB and MASSOB, it was also observed as a prelude to the coming Biafra referendum. “The total compliance shows that the people of Biafra are fed up with Nigeria and her system; we can no longer continue to associate our existence with the failed and unproductive state of Nigeria. As we savour the victory and success achieved on the recent sit-at-home exercise, we shall never rest on our oars as the major work to be done for speedy actualization and restoration of Biafra is ahead of us.” On how MASSOB intends to pursue the issue of the referendum and how it would collaborate with others, Madu said: “The referendum to determine the willingness, decision and resolve of the people of Biafra to leave Nigeria is the next stage of the struggle. The referendum will determine and resolve the Biafra question, it will give room for the people to willingly decide their future and existence in Biafra or Nigeria, it will also enable the international communities to ascertain the willingness of the people of Biafra to be separated from Nigeria. “The clamour and demands for the referendum can never be done by one Biafra agitation group, it is a general task of all the people of Biafra. MASSOB salutes the Lower Niger Congress, the foremost referendum agitator for the people of lower Niger (Biafra). We also salute the IPOB for their stunt support and clamour for the Biafra referendum. “As the issue of the Biafra referendum takes the front burner position and also the need of the hour, we shall continue to discuss and strategize on the possible and globally accepted means of achieving it without any blemish. The leadership of genuine Biafra self-determination groups will soon meet for the next task ahead. “The coming Biafra referendum can be likened to a football team. The 11 players that make up the team must work together without rancour for them to achieve success. Though no player is more important but there must be a man of the match, with the collaboration and coordination of eleven players, one player must score the needed goal(s) that will bring the desired victory that the team, supporters and fans and the entire nation will celebrate. “The people of Biafra must be carried along irrespective of their positions, even the traditional, religious, political, academics and civil society organisations have their roles to play; the labour movement and trade union groups are all involved.” http://sunnewsonline.com/biafra-referendum-ipob-massob-will-collaborate-to-achieve-feat-madu/ |
How he shutdown South East May 30 By Willy Eya and tunde thomas “Live the life of your dreams. Be brave enough to live the life of your dreams according to your vision and purpose instead of the expectations and opinion of others. Don’t let others tell you what you can’t do. Don’t let the limitations of others limit your vision. If you can remove your self-doubt and believe in yourself, you can achieve what you never thought possible.” Enter Nnamdi Kenny Okwu Kanu, the new kid on the block. The above quote by a great thinker, Roy T. Benett captures the power of vision and self-belief, which the British-Nigerian political activist now represents. He is a man of the moment and hate or love him, his name has got stuck in the minds of the majority of Nigerians. And perhaps no name in the country today rings a bell like that of the prisoner of conscience. Surprisingly, before now, Kanu who doubles as the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and director of a London-based radio station, Radio Biafra was literally unknown in Nigeria. But out of the blues, the Abia State born activist became a household name when on October 14, 2015, he was arrested by the agents of the Federal Government, the Department of State Security (DSS) in his hotel room, Golden Tulip Essential Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos State on treason charges. He was thereafter detained in jail. His arrest and detention marked the beginning of the making of today’s Igbo hero. Many would agree that since his arrest on that fateful day, the popularity of the young man with a heart of steel has soared like an eagle. The man Nnamdi Kanu was born in Isiama Afara, Abia State, Nigeria. His father is Eze Israel Okwu Kanu and his mother Ugoeze Nnenne Kanu. He attended Library Avenue Primary School (now part of Government House, Umuahia) and went to Government College Umuahia for his secondary education. The freedom fighter later gained admission to the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), where he could not finish due to incessant strikes before he left for London to complete his tertiary education. By 1987, Nnamdi was merely an innocent Geography major, resident at Akintola Hall of the UNN. Not given to half measures and as one of those gifted in the pursuit of their dreams, Nnamdi’s path would prove to be thorny, uncommon and epochal. It is little wonder that he did not have the patience to tarry along with other normal students before going abroad for his studies. While in London, Kanu became an activist and freedom fighter with the sole aim of liberating the people of Biafra who he believes are being oppressed in Nigeria. One of the greatest instruments he deployed to achieve that dream was the Radio Biafra with which he continuously lampooned the Federal Government. A man of his conviction, he took his activities to the extreme and did not pretend that he could even pay the supreme price for the liberation of his people. The IPOB leader was once quoted to have said he is an Igbo Jew, part of a group who believe they are descendants of the lost tribe of Israel who settled in West Africa. Speaking ahead of the 50th anniversary of Biafran war to Al-Jazeera despite being banned by the court not to grant interviews, Kanu had made it clear that the demand for the secession of Ndigbo from Nigeria is because the nation seems not to be functioning and can never function. He decried the marginalisation of the Igbo in Nigeria, saying that they have been prevented from aspiring to assume important positions in the country. Kanu like in the words of Philip Brooks, believes that, “no man has come to true greatness who has not felt that his life belongs to his race, and that which God gives to him, He gives him for mankind”. Hero or villain For Kanu, many believe that heroism was thrust on him by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration following his arrest, detention and eventual release on bail. The news of the arrest of Mr Kanu generated protests across parts of Delta, Enugu, Rivers, Cross River, Abia, Imo, and Anambra states. The argument is that the activist has been operating long before the All Progressives Congress (APC) government came on board and many Nigerians hardly knew that any name like Nnamdi Kanu ever existed. The permutation is that the strategy adopted by the government through the Department of State Security (DSS) magnified IPOB, which Kanu leads and shot his popularity up to high heavens. His popularity rating was boosted when he was denied bail after orders to do so by several courts of competent jurisdiction. Kanu was arraigned by the DSS on November 23, 2015 in an Abuja Magistrate Court for the first time for charges of “criminal conspiracy, intimidation and membership of an illegal organisation.” The charges, they said violated “Section 97, 97B and 397” of Nigeria’s penal code. On the date of the case, Kanu’s supporters stormed Abuja in luxury buses on a peaceful protest for their leader who was arraigned before the Wuse Zone 2 Magistrate Court with placards amid dancing and singing outside the court premises whilst hearing proceeded. Protesters wore T-shirts and caps with inscriptions like “Biafra Now or Never”, “Buhari Release Kanu For Us”, “On Biafra We Stand”. The government ignored initial court orders calling for Kanu’s bail before bowing to the recent one, which eventually led to his release on bail, on April, 28, 2017. But the bail conditions were harsh as the IPOB leader was banned from public speaking, granting press interviews or being in a group of more than 10 people. As a condition of that bail, Kanu was also asked to bring a prominent Igbo leader, a wealthy resident of Abuja and a senior Nigerian Jewish leader to provide N100m ($260,000; £200,000) each as surety to the court. So, from the government’s perspective, Kanu is an enemy of the state whose activities should be nipped in the bud. But for very many others, he is a hero and a prisoner of conscience. While he was in prison, many prominent Nigerians including Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti state, former governor of Abia State and eminent businessman, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, former governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof Charles Soludo among others visited him and further made him a celebrity even while in detention. Cult figure among Ndigbo Among Ndigbo worldwide, particularly in the South East zone, Kanu has become a small god. In the social media, pictures of those who are short of worshipping him like a deity have often appeared in some platforms. His Abia State home has become a Mecca of some sorts. Going by the figures from Amnesty International, more than 150 Igbo youths were martyred in the struggle for his release. Many still wonder why the leader of IPOB has overshadowed his counterpart and founder of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra(MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazuruike. Not a few believe that the average Igbo youth sees Kanu as the new face of the Biafran struggle unlike Uwazuruike who had been around over the years with allegations of having compromised the spirit of the fight for liberation. The youth in the South East see him as the true son of Biafra having remained unbowed despite the intimidation and harassment in the hands of the state. Kanu is worshipped and deified because in the eyes of many, he did what many Igbo leaders were either too afraid to do or unwilling to do because of their selfish interests. He dared to be different and spoke out against the powers that be whose project appears to have been to always put the Igbo at a disadvantage in the nation’s scheme of things. Many believe that Kanu has successfully taken up the gauntlet and waged a mind war against the establishment, hence his popularity among the Igbo masses. Sit-At-Home Order On Tuesday, May 30 , the entire South East was shut down following the sit-at-home order by the Kanu’s IPOB, to mark the 50th anniversary of the declaration of the defunct Republic of Biafra and to honour heroes and heroines of the struggle. Apart from the East, the directive was partly complied with in Port Harcourt, Asaba and Bayelsa but ignored in Uyo. Most markets, banks and schools in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states, including those in the rural areas, were closed and the roads were totally deserted in the early hours of the morning. In Enugu, the order was also largely complied with as schools, banks, markets and other commercial activities were paralysed, with police helicopters hovering around the state capital. The shutdown of the states was in spite of the plea by South-East governors and massive police and security presence, who patrolled streets and carried out air surveillance with helicopters to ensure that there was no breakdown of law and order. Following the success of the sit-at-home directive, IPOB congratulated Ndigbo worldwide for showing total compliance with the order. IPOB, in a statement by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Mr Emma Powerful, said the compliance with the directive was an indication that Ndigbo all over the world were tired of the Nigerian federation and ready to leave the country. His words: “Our Supreme Leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu issued this order of sit-at-home when he was still in Kuje Prisons, Abuja and it has come to pass. All the people of Biafra both at home and abroad complied in totality without any compulsion, which has not happened in the history of the Biafran struggle.” http://sunnewsonline.com/nnamdi-kanuson-of-the-rising-sun/ |
The call came in the middle of a very serious meeting. "The fetters have been broken" was what the caller said. I listened with rapt attention as he told me what had happened. Wow! The gates of Nigeria's hell now has keys. Mazi Nnamdi kanu, the only true Nigerian that was bold enough to tell us the truth, has slipped through the fingers of his oppressors/captors. "Is he out?" I questioned and was told he had been given conditions for bail. Well, if he is bailable, it means it is a battle he fought and won. But why am I elated about this development? Why do I dance more than they? When Buhari took over from Jonathan, most northerners and northernized Niger Deltans sounded as if an emperor had been enthroned. Truth be told, the man was feared by many a Nigerian, for most of the so-called activists embarked on self-imposed French Leave. Fear gripped Nigerians and their neighbours when Buhari left the shores of this country to tell the world that Nigerians are corrupt. This was an undiplomatic way of instilling fear in Nigerians and other countries that had had relationship with Nigeria for years. May I inform us that no nation exists without some form of corruption? Nations are superior or weak on the basis of the level of corruption they possess. Buhari, being at sea with what it takes to truly fight corruption, misfired several times and rejuvenated our teething economic problems. His lack of administrative tact was interpreted as hard stance towards corruption, all to the detriment of the economy. Nnamdi Kanu was the lone voice in the wilderness. He screamed on while a lot of us slept and snored out of fear of the Sheriff. This illustrious son from the East has proven to Nigerians and to the world at large that those who maintain silence in the midst of troubling economic and leadership issues are the real tormentors. When our hero started his onslaught against perceived tyranny, a lot of us were too lily-livered to see beyond the mist. The visionary and proactive Kanu, sensing that his broadcast would end as empty propaganda, brought himself into the net of his targets. When he was apprehended, some myopic and hypnotized Nigerians from all the regions abused him and even swore he would go in for it. These Nigerians, those that see Nnamdi Kanu as the villain, are the real reason Nigeria is northernized and almost Islamized. The same dolts that praise the oppressor and assail the victim are the ones that inclined a nod to the northernization of federal appointments. In the warped reasoning of these economically jaundiced Nigerians, Buhari remains a misunderstood saviour of Nigeria. Shockingly, no amount of sermon from clerics has sufficed in separating these Nigerians from the apparition called sycophancy. Unbelievably, Kanu remained the villain even after all his prognostications had come to pass, for the economy had taken a plunge after the 2015 exchange of baton. Kanu, then the anchorman in the UK Radio Biafra, foresaw a Nigeria on the brink of collapse. I remain befuddled that when his prediction became reality, all Nigerians could do was to join Buhari and his co-travelers in blaming the past administration for the present mess. Nigerians are amazing indeed. Here in Rivers State, some of our brothers and sisters continued to evince baseless apathy for the reinvigorated struggle for the soul of Biafra and Nigeria, by extension. How many of us in Rivers State, and indeed Niger Delta, showed compassion for the travails of this intelligent man? We continued to sing and dance around politicians who use us as tools to be discarded after use. We continued to downplay the struggle that has the potentiality of delivering Nigeria from her oppressors. The Niger Delta carried on as if the Nigeria we have today is beneficial to them. We could not fathom that the ultimate beneficiaries of the Biafra project is the Niger Delta that has always been the victim of the protracted predatorship. We failed to see that the only way to stop this herdsman called the North from milking us dry is by joining forces with our brothers in the East. We all looked askance while the enemy strove to summarily terminate the life of their captor, for they had failed to incriminate him. We all watched and remain tacit while they moved from prosecution to persecution, in their bid to shut Kanu up. Kanu, FFK, and Fayose had, together, though working independently, become a bone in the throat of the North. While we remained docile and inert, some northerners, having seen enough of this, decided to speak out. Kanu's illicit incarceration was seen as what it really was: persecution. Its condemnation came from the most unlikely quarters and by the time we knew it, some northerners stopped seeing anything wrong with the IPOB movement. I salute the bravado of all those that worked assiduously hard to make this day a reality. Hearty cheers to the man of inestimable valour, the hero of our time, the ray of light in a very inky nation - Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. You came, you saw, and you most certainly prevailed. Those that died in the course of this struggle will be proud in their graves, for their death is the invisible cause of this victory. It is not over yet, for the struggle has to be taken to various regions that constitute Biafra. It is time to get tactical. It is time to remind others that they are part of this movement. It is time to correct the stories that have the proclivity to divide us. It is time for the town hall meetings, seminars, and symposia. The real goal is to unite the South-East and South-South. Biafrans, I hail thee! Russell Bluejack is a thinker, writer, socio-economic and political analyst, and academic member, Rivers State PDP Social Media Team that writes from Port Harcourt.

The Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB has thanked the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for openly recognizing Biafra. IPOB said it was grateful to Netanyahu for openly acknowledging the genocide committed against the people of Biafra by the Nigerian Government. Biafra was a secessionist state in eastern Nigeria that existed from 30 May 1967 to January 1970. The secession of the Biafran region was the primary cause of the Nigerian Civil War, also known as the Biafran War. The Israeli Prime Minister had during his speech on Holocaust Remembrance Day in Jerusalem, reportedly mentioned Biafra as a sad case in history where the world turned a blind eye to the orchestrated murder of millions of innocent civilians.]] Reacting to Netanyahu’s comment, IPOB’s publicity secretary, Emmanuel Powerful said the development signals the best thing to come for the struggle. He noted that without a doubt, “this represents one of the greatest achievements of IPOB worldwide under the command structure of our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.” He said, “After nearly 50 years of blindfold diplomacy when Britain actively connived with Nigeria to blind the world to the horrors and atrocities committed by Gowon, Obasanjo, Buhari at al, the world is slowly waking up to their responsibility of accepting the fact that Britain sponsored the Gowon administration to commit mass murder against Biafrans and Igbos in particular.]# “Yesterday, 23 April 2017, marks the first day the name Biafra has been mentioned in public by a major world leader. “Mentioning Biafra in Jerusalem during his speech, the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reinforced holocaust signified the our belief in the inevitability of the restoration of Biafra in the near future.” He said, if Biafra eventually becomes a reality, it would partner with Israel. Powerful added, “Biafra nation will be the greatest ally of Israeli because blood is and will always be thicker than water. We are aware that Israel will always love Biafra because they are waiting to see the emergence of a credible Biafran group and leadership, they will speak. “It’s a gradual process, the whole world can no longer pretend not to be aware now of the genocide against the people of Biafra orchestrated by Britain and executed by the Nigerian Government of Yakubu Gowon. “Those who claim to be Igbo people or Niger Deltans, especially those born and raised in Lagos or living outside the sacred land of Biafra, should read the full text of the speech by the Prime Minister to understand that appeasing and begging those that hate you will never stop them from killing you.” http://dailypost.ng/2017/04/24/ipob-celebrates-israel-recognizes-biafra%e2%80%8e/?utm_source=dlvr.it_dp1&utm_medium=facebook |
Bruce Fein Biafra, dominated by the great Igbo race, enjoyed sovereignty before Great Britain commenced exploitative colonial rule over Nigeria under the racist banner of Rudyard Kipling’s “the White Man’ burden.” Britain asserted authority over Biafra based on the tyrannical doctrine that the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must. The Berlin West Africa Conference, 1884-85, and the Berlin General Act symbolized colonial lawlessness by treating Africa as a carcass to be divided up among European vultures. Restoration of Biafra’s sovereignty is justified under international law and practice—especially with the ongoing ethnic-inspired killings and persecutions of Biafans by Nigeria’s elected military dictator from the North touting sharia law, President Mohammdu Buhari. Biafra’s sovereignty journey will require deft international diplomacy and the marshalling of widespread popular support from Biafrans and their resources. Power is never voluntarily surrendered. Rights ultimately are what you are willing to fight and die for. Prior to British colonization in 1906, the great Igbo people to the East of Niger, numbering some 3 million, and their cognate tribes enjoyed decentralized self-government. They were not living in a state of nature. Their self-rule came by force of arms—not voluntarily. In 1900, the British government assumed responsibility for the Royal Niger Company’s territories, and formed the Protectorate of Northern Nigeria, the Niger Coast Protectorate and the Lagos Colony Protectorate territories. 1913 witnessed the amalgamation of Nigeria into three administrative areas: the crown colony of Lagos and the Protectorates of Northern and Southern Nigeria. In 1960, Britain ended its colonization of Nigeria without reference to the Igbo or any other peoples of Nigeria entitled to self-determination. The Nigeria Independence Act established Nigerian territorial boundaries not by popular referendum or other reliable manifestations of self-determination of peoples, but according to the Nigeria’s Orders in Council, 1954 to 1960. They reflected British selfish maneuvers to dominate Nigeria economically. Britain’s failure to offer Biafrans the right to self-determination violated the United Nations General Assembly Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples adopted on 14 December 1960. Paragraph 5 of the Declaration required that immediate steps be taken by the colonial power “to transfer all powers to the peoples of those [colonized] territories…in accordance with their freely expressed will and desire…in order to enable them to enjoy complete independence and freedom.” The 1970 Declaration on Principles of International Law concerning Friendly Relations and Cooperation among States in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations emphasized that, “By virtue of the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, all peoples have the right freely to determine without external interference their political status….” The people of Biafra—recognized as distinct by British colonial authorities—were never provided an opportunity to vote for complete independence and freedom from the rest of Nigeria according to their freely expressed will and desire. They were never consulted on the subject when Nigeria became independent in 1960. Further, the 1960 Constitution of Nigeria was never approved by the people of Biafra in a referendum or otherwise. And neither has any subsequent Nigerian Constitution, including the current version decreed by a military dictator in 1999. In sum, the British decolonized Nigeria in violation of international law by failing to transfer power to the peoples of Biafra in accordance with their freely expressed will. That violation was not a technicality, but an affront to a fundamental human right. All governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed. Consent is required to legitimate authority and to forestall external subjugation, oppression, persecution, or even genocide fueled by tribal, sectarian, ethnic, or megalomaniacal ambitions or hatreds. After independence from Britain, Nigeria soon became a charnel house for Biafrans. Deprived of their right to self-determination, they were left to the tender mercies of the Hausa-Fulani of the North and the Yoruba of the South in a unitary state unsuited for its diverse tribal, ethnic, and religious landscape. The gruesome 1967-1970 Biafran War was emblematic. Ethnic-based massacres of Biafrans and countless starving children who died as little more than skeletons was its grim face. The horrors suffered by Biafrans gave birth to the first modern international relief effort to lessen unspeakable misery. At the war’s conclusion, Nigeria’s General Yakubu Gowon’s sloganeered, “No victor, no vanquished.” The words proved a cruel hoax. The Igbo were marginalized, persecuted as traitors, and subjected to a Northern political yolk. Under incumbent Nigerian elected military dictator Buhari, the repression of the Igbo have reached new heights featuring indiscriminate killings, torture, and detentions without trial. Last March, for instance, 13 Biafrans were murdered and their corpses burnt to ashes and dumped in a burrow pit located in the area of Aba-Port Harcourt Road in Abia State by suspected Buhari agents. Last February, a team of Buhari’s Army, Navy, and Police and gunned down 22 Biafrans protesting Buhari’s detention of Biafan leader Prince Nnamdi Kanu. A complete chronicle of Buhari’s horrors only would numb by repetition. The point is that there is no political remedy for Biafra’s suffering—like an abused wife in a forced marriage—short of self-determination to regain its sovereignty that was illegally extinguished by the British and never surrendered after decolonization. States born from longstanding repression of peoples by ruling authorities are part of the woof and warp of international law or custom. Think of Bangladesh, Namibia, South Sudan, Zimbabwe, East Timor, Eritrea, and Kosovo. The case for Biafran sovereignty is as strong or stronger as these precedents. But to succeed, Biafrans will need to organize, unify, and make their case to the United Nations Security Council, the United Nations Human Rights Council, the African Union, the European Union, and the United States. If they do not all hang together, they might all come to hang separately.
