PASTOR BANKIE: QESTIONS AND ANSWERS ON YOUR MARRIAGE AND RELATIONSHIP ISSUES (Part 1)

Question: Sir, my parents want me to marry a man I do not
like. What should I do?
Answer: Simple; refuse! If even God will not make you marry someone you
do not like, why do you think parents can? God brought Eve to
Adam, and Adam made a decision. Your parents can bring up a
suggestion; that is alright. They must however allow you decide if it
is okay with you. Please refer to the chapter (No 16) on arranged
marriages in this book and get understanding.

Question: Sir, what is a Christian to do when the parents
do not accept one's choice of a mate?
Answer: In this one you have to be careful. If the parents are believers who
know the word of God, then you must go and pray. Parents, when
they perform their roles properly, are actually a layer of protection in
the life of young people. That is something about authority figures
generally.
Now, sometimes the parents give their reasons, and those
reasons are totally against the word of God. For example, they may
object because the man or woman is from a 'wrong' ethnic group or
he is not rich yet. It is very common for parents to refuse a suitor
for their daughter because his father is a nobody. Some even go to
diviners and the oracle (or prophet) tells them it is not to be a
good marriage. This is idolatry which a Christian must never subscribe
to. When they start giving such ungodly reasons, they are pitching
themselves against the word of God in your life and you must take
a stand. Authority figures are not permitted to directly oppose the
written8 word of God (Acts 4:19).
* Please note that it is the written word of God that we are talking about, not the
'witness in your spirit' which can mean anything and which changes with the
weather.

When parents directly oppose God's word in their opposition,
then it is time to be the light. Explain to them in polite but clear
terms that the principles they are operating by are against the word
of God, and you have no choice but to be against them here.
One thing I must say here is that it is good that this is not
the first time they are discovering you respect the word of God. Many
people make the mistake of compromising with their parents on
everything else but then take a stand for the word of God now
because it supports their love life. If that is your case, you will smell
pepper before God defends His word in your life. These cases differ
widely from one another, so all I can give are some general guides.
It will take patience and prayer.
Please bear in mind that women, as a rule, are to be given
in marriage. Usually this is done by the father. As a woman, you
can't just flaunt that rule and be guiltless; so pray and wait until you
persuade your parents. Your pastor or friend cannot give you out in
marriage unless your natural father first disowns you, and this because
of your faith (not because of marriage). Many pastors have committed
this error and given Christianity a bad name and encouraged rebellion.
It is different for a man who has more liberty once he has
leaved his parents. Even in this, it is better to use patience and
prayers to win them over, even if they remain in a grumbling state,
rather than to just ignore them entirely. It is still your duty to be a
light to them in many more things that will come forth in life.

Question: Sir, is dating before marriage among
Christians godly?
Answer: First, let us get our definitions aligned. What do we mean when we
say dating? The Bible does not use that word so we just have to
see what is meant contemporarily.
If by dating we mean just to go out with someone, eat, watch
a movie and just get acquainted, I think it sounds harmless enough
and it is not forbidden for Christians. Of course we understand that
you are not likely to propose marriage to a person who you have
given no signals ahead of time; so unless this so-called dating is
for the direct purpose of working up to the point of marriage proposals
I do not think it has a useful purpose. If it is the idea of pairing
off in a Pentecostal form of girlfriend-boyfriend romantic relationships,
whether it involves sex or not, it is not appropriate. It is a needless
and deceptive way by which young Christian people get themselves
into unnecessary romantic entanglements.
Everything in life has a purpose. So what is the purpose of
those romantic relationships? It is not true that you need a long time
to know someone who you want to marry. Even if you need the
time, you do not have to be in a private romantic relationship with
the person. You can know someone very well without being emotionally
involved. By the time romantic emotions set in, you should have
marriage proposals ready or close at hand.
When these things are used carelessly they lead to unnecessary
temptations and falling into sexual sins. Paul said 'flee temptations.'
Avoid all things that fire up your hormones and lead you into
temptation.
Just for emphasis, Christian relationships before marriage must
be non-sexual. The idea of fornication is not a 'holiness movement'
thing. These days we preach more faith and prosperity and so we
forget to remind ourselves about the basics of Christianity. Sex before
marriage is against the will of God, even if you are engaged to the
person. Engagement and marriage are two totally different things.

That is how we become transformed in His image. You want to be more patient? Meditate on just how patient Jesus has been with you all these years. You desire to be more forgiving toward your wife? Then saturate yourself with thoughts of His forgiveness for every failing you have. Think about how He was right there to pick you up each time you fumbled, with no judgment and no
condemnation, only love. “For a righteous man may fall seven times and rise again” (Prov. 24:16).
That’s right, my brother, however you may have fallen, Jesus sees you as a righteous man, clothed with His own robes of righteousness, and nothing is going to keep you down. You may think it’s all over, but it isn’t. God’s not done with you. His plans and His purposes for your life have not yet been fulfilled. His love for you has never wavered.

All your imperfections are swallowed up by His perfect love. You may have made mistakes, but it’s never too late to receive His forgiveness and receive courage and strength from Him to do the right thing—go back to your wife, seek her forgiveness, and trust the Lord to re-ignite your love for one another and bring about healing and restoration to your marriage. Your answer is found in the person of Jesus. He will fix you up and cause all things to work together for good and to His glory.
Receive His forgiveness and let Him guide you.

MYLES MUNROE: EVERY MARRIAGE NEEDS A 50-YEAR PLAN

As a vital preparation time for marriage, the
engagement period is too important to waste on
inconsequential matters. Many engaged couples do little
more during that time than plan the wedding and perhaps
talk in generalities about work and career plans. It is quite
common for couples to wait until they are engaged to talk
specifically about their goals.
While this is better than not
talking about them at all, ENGAGEMENT IS NOT REALLY THE TIME
FOR SUCH A DISCUSSION. Courtship is the time for couples to
talk about their goals and objectives, their dreams and
desires, and to plan their future. By the time a couple
reaches the engagement stage, all these things should be in
place.
They should know where they want to go, how they
plan to get there, and should have a oneness of heart and
spirit to go there together.
Engagement is the time for couples to put into place
and execute their action plan to get them where they want
to go. It is a time to move from planning to walking
determinedly together in the same direction. One definition
of the word “engage” is “to interlock with,” or “mesh
together,” and the word “engagement,” the state of being
“in gear.” By the time a couple becomes engaged, their
goals, objectives, dreams, desires, and values should
interlock with each other and mesh together as one, and
they should be “in gear” with each other as they move
forward with their practical preparations to bring those
things to pass.
Engagement is the time for couples to put into place and
execute their action plan to get them where they want to go.
I counsel young couples to use their engagement period
to develop a 50-year life plan, a plan that lays out where
they want to go, what they want to do, and what they want
to become over the next 50 years. Of course, it is
impossible for anyone to predict with complete accuracy
the direction his or her life will take over a 50-year period.
Unanticipated life changes and unexpected opportunities
will almost certainly come along that could lead to a
change in direction. Some goals may be reached and some
plans come to fruition sooner than expected while others
may be dropped altogether. Any such life plan therefore
needs to have built-in flexibility to allow for the
unexpected. The important thing is for engaged couples to
have a plan, a “road map” to guide them over the months
and years of marriage that lie ahead and to help them stay
on course to reach their dreams and goals and avoid getting
sidetracked onto dead ends or other paths that will take
them where they don’t want to go.
For some folks, engagement means going out for ice
cream, going to movies, holding hands, kissing, and such.
That’s not engagement; that’s dating. Of course, engaged
couples do those kinds of things because they continue
dating, but engagement involves much more than that; it
goes much deeper.
Engagement is hard-core planning, where a couple gets
down to the brass tacks of preparing for life after the
wedding.
This is where, depending on their circumstances,
they go looking for an apartment to rent or a house to buy
or a plot of land on which to build. They talk to real estate
agents and house contractors. They visit banks to check out
car loans. They set money back in savings against future
expenses. They consider and anticipate every possible snag

One of the questions, I am often asked by people who want to invest in Africa, is how do I deal with people demanding bribes…. My answer is really quite simple: I have never had any difficulty with saying, “NO”.

Corruption only occurs at the point you decide to participate; it takes two. There is the one demanding it, and the one who pays it. And really this is how we fight it: each one of us, saying ‘NO’. For me personally, dealing with corruption has never been difficult because of my faith.
In my own mind, to quote, the Apostle Paul, “I am fully persuaded” that there is no person or force, in all the universe, that has the capacity to stop something which God has given me. This is a deep, deep conviction for me. I believe that I will never ever be disadvantaged because I walked away from a corrupt deal. In fact, on this the Bible is clear: if I walk away, or lose anything because of my conviction that it is wrong, God will replace it with something much bigger and better,..”in this life” (Mark 10:29- 30).

Sometimes I have been viciously persecuted, because of my stand against corruption, at other times, I have had to wait for years, because some corrupt individual or individuals, were blocking our way. And always I prevailed, because, “faith abides” (it never, ever, fails).

Ironically some of the worst corruption I have witnessed, was not in governments, but in the private sector. Some of the most corrupt people I have known were not Africans, but, we as Africans must take responsibility, individually, and collectively, to fight corruption.
I could write a book about what happens to you spiritually when you accept a bribe, or offer one, but I will not do so, today. And for those of you who do not consider the spiritual perspective, let me rather respectively, say this:
We would not, as Africans, need aid from anybody if we tackle corruption; no child would sleep hungry if we tackle corruption; there would be no injustice, if we tackle corruption; every child will be in school, if we tackle corruption. The most powerful force, against corruption begins with one person, saying “NO”.

In one country we had a contract on which we earned over US$30 million a year. It was very important for our business. Two very powerful politicians demanded that I pay them a bribe of US$8 million to keep the contract. I refused.
They had our contract cancelled and we were thrown out. Then they replaced us with one of our largest global competitors from Europe, whose executives immediately paid the bribes. I reported them to the US Justice Department, as they are listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
They admitted that their officials had paid the bribes and fired the officials. They left the country. One of the politicians was later indicted for corruption and is now serving a 13-year jail sentence.

Years later we returned to the country and we are building our presence in that wonderful country again.
In another country, we submitted a tender on privatisation and we were recommended as the best by the international investment bankers advising the government of that country. The deal was worth hundreds of millions to us. We waited and waited for an announcement, but none came.

Then I was invited to the State House. The son of the President asked for a 20% stake in exchange for us being given the award. I refused and withdrew our bid. I have no regrets.
When the President had lost an election, we returned to that country and got an opportunity to set up and we are doing very well.
In yet another country, a retiring African President invited me to come and see him. He told me he had heard a lot of good things about our company. He said he wanted to issue one more licence before he left office and he felt that we should have it because we were an African company.

He then suggested that I find a way to accommodate him quietly off shore, as he “needed something in retirement”. I politely told him that I was not interested in the licence. We are yet to return to that country, but we will one day.
In one of Africa’s most respected countries, a policeman asked me for my driver’s licence as I drove to church one morning with my family.
I told him that I had forgotten it at home. He said that I had committed an offence, which I immediately accepted. Instead of giving me a ticket, he suggested that I pay him something.

I refused. He then threatened to arrest me and I said it was fine and he could go ahead. Several of his colleagues surrounded us, even verbally abusing me saying I would be deported because I was a foreigner.

I kept quiet. I never raised my voice, or was animated. I simply asked that they either arrest me, or issue me a ticket. After a while they said we could go. I refused and insisted they ticket me as they had an obligation to do so under the law. Now, they were totally terrified!
We have continued to prosper in that nation, but I never forget my licence when I drive a car!

6 Stupid Things Singles Do To Mess Up Their Lives

Cathy Guise from the comic strip says: “I’m beautiful, charming,
talented and ready to share my life with someone, Charlene. I want to
dream with someone . . .plan with someone . . .I want to be there for
someone, and I want someone to be there for me!”
Charlene responds, “My husband has a really cute friend who . . . “
”Auck!” Cathy screams. “A fix-up?? No fix-ups!! I’m ready to be
married. I’m not ready to date.”

Many singles are like Cathy. Marriage is their goal. But they don’t
want to go through the process of preparing for marriage. They lead a
busy life, own their own business, have a successful career, plenty of
friends. But are unsuccessful in establishing a long-term
relationships. However, it is possible to have more control over future
relationships, learn from the stupid mistakes of others and make
better choices in the future. You can learn to recognize stupidness.
Don’t go there!

Stupid Mistake #1: MARRY TOO RAPIDLY.
There are seven stages in dating and each stage has a function and
purpose . If any stage is rushed or skipped, there is a gap in the
development of the relationship, and problems result. Strong lasting
relationships must be paced over a long period of time where “getting
to know you” is the major theme.
Stage 1 is Friendship. At the friendship stage, a couple get to know
each other while participating in non-romantic activities.
In stage 2, Casual Dating, two friends now move away from the group to
engage in couple activities. Stage 3, Special Dating, is an in-between
stage that means there is a growing emotional attachment between the
two but they have not yet made a commitment.
Stage 4, Steady Dating, signifies there is an understanding between
the two that they will not date others. In stage 5, Pre-Engagement,
the couple begins discussing the possibility of marriage–“someday.”
But their understanding is private and personal rather than final or
binding. Stage 6 is a Formal Engagement in which a wedding date has
been set and wedding plans are in progress. Stage 7, Marriage, is
final and binding and it should be the continuation of the romantic
phase of courtship.
Unfortunately, many couples go through these stages out of sequence. So
eager are they to find love, they skip the preliminaries and jump into
romance.. Adult singles, especially the previously married, tend to
act in haste and marry too quickly. An urgency rushes them into
marriage without first establishing a stable base for a relationship.
Every couple should date for two years prior to engagement. One whole
year should be spent at stages 1, 2, and 3, carefully nurturing a
friendship first. During the second year the “masks” begin to slip and
character flaws emerge that till now have been hidden.
Research validates this point.. Researchers at Kansas State University
found “a strong correlation between length of time spent dating their
current spouse and marital satisfaction. The researchers noted that
“couples who had dated for more than two years scored consistently
high on marital satisfaction, while couples who had dated for shorter
periods scored in a wide range from very high to very low.”
Some of the biggest fiascoes I’ve seen have been with previously
married persons who thought they could skip all the kid stuff and rush
into marriage. The stupidest mistake of all is to try to rush into
marriage.

Stupid Mistake #2: LIVE TOGETHER BEFORE MARRIAGE.
You’ve been dating someone terrific. You get along great. Let’s live
together before getting married to make sure it works.
Another stupid decision in light of recent studies. There are seven
major studies that show that couples who live together before marriage
have a higher divorce rate. Moving in with someone is an act of
immaturity which blasts a loud message. “You don’t have to do much to
get me! Date me a few times and we’ll play house.”
` In marriages that have been preceded by living together only 15 out
of 100 couples stay married. The odds are four to one against a
live-in relationship lasting.
Marriage has some definite advantages. It offers commitment, status,
rights, and opportunities that living together doesn’t. Marriage
offers mental, social, physical, and spiritual oneness.
Don’t play Russian Roulette with your future! Don’t live together first!

Stupid Mistake #3: BEGIN DATING BEFORE THE DIVORCE IS FINAL.
Tom and Becky were legally separated. Becky had someone else lined up to marry.
But Tom refused to date until the divorce was final. Just before
everything was final, Becky shocked her attorney and Tom by announcing
she wanted to try again. Now she and Tom are working toward
reconciliation.
Until the divorce is final you are still a married person.
Furthermore, a recently separated person is not emotionally ready to
date. Next to failing to date for two years prior to marriage, the
stupidest mistake is to begin dating before the divorce is final.

Stupid Mistake #4: BECOME SEXUALLY INVOLVED BEFORE MARRIAGE
Many singles look to sex to fill the void and make themselves feel
loved. But sex isn’t the answer to feeling unloved. Sex outside of
marriage only complicates the problems we already have. Let’s look at
some of the problems:
(1) Those who have sex before marriage are more likely to divorce.
According to one study they have a 53 to 71% higher divorce rate.
(2) Those who engage in sex before marriage are more likely to break up.
(3) Those who engage in sex before marriage are more likely to
experience extra marital affairs.
(4) Those who engage in sex before marriage experience a devastating
blow to their self worth. Many sacrifice their self-worth at the altar
of sex and get nothing in return. The answer to such problems can be
found in a life committed to Jesus.

Stupid Mistake #5: IGNORE DANGER SIGNALS
Those desperately in love, tend to ignore danger signals. A Gallup
study showed that 38 % of those who divorced were aware of problems
that led to divorce while they were dating but ignored them! There is
a need to do some serious investigation early in a relationship.
If you want to know something ask questions. It’s a red flag if he/she
doesn’t answer. It’s another red flag if he/she doesn’t have friends
and never introduces you to family or friends.
If your friends speak well of your date and it all jives with what you
know, you are probably okay. But if you pick up negative vibes of any
kind you must do some serious investigation. Listen carefully for
information about a former mate and the reason for divorce.
Take off your rose-colored glasses. If you don’t do some serious
investigation now you may spend a lot of time and money in a
counselor’s office later on. Remember, a person with something to hide
rarely wears a sign around their neck or wants you to know about it.

Stupid Mistake #6: MARRY WITHOUT PREMARITAL PREPARATION.
“What do I need premarital preparation for?” one man blurted out.
“I’ve been married three times!” This is precisely why premarital
preparation is decidedly needed!
Most churches require engaged couples to have only two or three
counseling sessions in which most of the discussion focuses on
planning the wedding service. There is no required waiting period, no
required reading, no training in communication skills, no
compatibility testing. A church that functions in this manner becomes
only a “blessing machine” for tomorrow’s divorces.
An effective premarital program should include both a required waiting
period and compatibility testing. An instrument called PREPARE*
(Premarital Personal and Relationship Evaluation) is a useful tool for
predicting a couple’s compatibility. PREPARE gives an objective
diagnosis of relationships strengths and weaknesses as well as
assessing conflict-resolution ability.
The most remarkable element of PREPARE is that it can predict with 86
percent accuracy which couples will divorce and with 78 percent
accuracy which couples will stay happily married. Especially is this
needed for second and or subsequent marriages. Such persons are less
likely to seek premarital guidance. And the older a couple is the more
likely they marry with little or no engagement period or premarital
guidance. PREPARE MC is available for those previously married with
children and MATE, for those over 55 years of age.
One of the big challenges for adult singles is trying to avoid the
potholes of life. All of us face life’s potholes, but single people
must dodge them alone. Trying to escape all of them would be like
attempting to dodge every pothole on the Long Island Expressway in
April.
Through Christ, you as a single adult can have a hope for the future
that goes beyond the broken dreams, promises, and hurt you may have
experienced. Through Jesus you can obtain a vision of your potential
if you gain the courage to face the problem–to begin to risk, to start
over again. Remodeling may require growing pains, but look to the
Master Architect for the finished product.
